[Q] Can you root on Jellybean? - AT&T LG Optimus G

My friend recently got an og and isn't very tech savvy, so he asked me if i could root his for him but the original root method doesn't seem to work for me on JB. Do i need to lgnpst it or is there a way to do it without taking it back?

There is a guide thread with all the answers.

The guide doesn't mention anything about jellybean, and the root method posted doesn't work on JB nor has it been updated since then, that's why i asked on here.

The CurrentRoot method from carrett's guide will root 20j.

That's odd, mine was rooted before the ota so i haven't messed with it on my OG but on the one I'm trying to use it on it only reboots the phone once then goes back to the home screen on the phone. Guess I'll give it a few more tries.

Unlees you are only trying to get to stock rooted it may be easier to just use teenybin.

Yeah, i thought about doing that but he does just want stock rooted. He's just trying to be able to remove the bloat and add custom themes. If i can't get this method to work i might just go ahead and use teenybin anyways. Thanks though!

You would still need to unlock with FreeGee to avoid getting security error when removing bloat. There is a rooted zip for 20j that you could flash after teenybin if you wanted to go that route.

The current method does work on JB. I've done it.

Well, as I've stated, after trying that method 6 times last night but it only reboots once then returns to the home screen of the phone.

[Q] S-OFF with HBOOT 1.08.0000

When I saw the news for the HTC Thunderbolt ICS update finaly out I got so excited, I returned my phone to stock, ran the update, and was happy... not thinking "what if they update the HBOOT"...well THEY DID. Stupid me for not waiting one more day for the rooted release! So now Im unable to acheive S-OFF as my HBOOT is now 1.08.0000.
Perhaps its too soon to be asking this, but is there a way to S-OFF the new HBOOT?
Nope you're Sol until an exploit is found. Oh and there is an if there too because I don't know how much interest there will be in finding an exploit for an old device.

Well if anything came out of this, we now know for certain the results of accepting the update and hopefully warn others. I have to take this phone into best buy for repairs, and seeing as I already did this once and they just gave me a (defective) refurbished model, they most likely will do it again.
HBroot off
I have been able to get S-off via HTCdev after I requested the code to unlock the bootloader. I am stuck now with root and I would love to know if somebody knows how to push the root onto the ICS stock rom?

That can't be done. If you're s off flash the ics radios in Santods post in the developer section and then flash the ics rom.

I've tried it and it will not stick. Not sure why but I wish I had waited for the rooted rom before going back to stock and getting the OTA update.

Yes you should be able to flash superuser in recovery to get root. You won't be able to use the stock ICS ROM though if you're still s off

Yes but the tool (Thunderbolt tool) does not handle HBoot 1.08 at the moment. I wish it would because this would solve my problem
Find the thread that has the fastboot flash able form of cwm and then get back to me. I'm thinking that the root method may be different now though so I'm worried an ordinary version of superuser won't work.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I decided to take the plunge, and perform the OTA, after that hopped over to HTCDev to get the bootloader unlock to root. Flashed the handy dandy CWM recovery from fastboot, and rebooted into recovery. Flashed the SuperUser package. Guess What? No ROOT.

I did a fastboot and flashed frev3vo, and ran adb shell.....although I wasn't root at the prompt, I was able to su root from adb shell, but I don't know at this point how to get back to root. I probably can't load an RUU either cause I lost S-OFF.
Try flashing this one in recovery. http://download.chainfire.eu/310/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip?retrieve_file=1

Restore to Completely Stock?

Can anyone help me with restoring my Optimus G to completely stock? I want to be able to accept ota updates. I'm assuming I'll need to re flash the stock recovery for sure, but is there a way I can flash a large package like you can on Odin with Samsung phones? Thanks!

Read the instructions he is talking about and get on irc and get a hold of Lgnpst. It works in the same manner of odin just a little different. You can get stock firmware in the dev section. Follow all instructions so you don't end up with a brick.

Is your build number 11c? If it is you can LGNPST back to stock 10o and then root. Or if you look around I saw a method that can root 11c.

Hi Torquerules, I'm curious if you actually use lgpnst to downgrade to 10o first or you're using that newer root method that can root straight from 11c ?
I rooted straight from 11c. I will have to search for the root method I used. It was easy.

Actually, I think it was this one. I downloaded and tried so many, I can't remember...

It works.. I am currently on the latest ota 4.1.2 P769 20d with unlocked bootloader, rooted, cwm recovery. YMMV, try at your own risk.

The jelly bean update came, it's not unlockable as hoped.. So it's the only method, currently, there isn't much dev activity on this device either, if you notice in the subforums. So waiting might be a long time, or a surprise..
If you don't mind me asking, what in particular are you need to do that requires unlocked bootloader? We can already root and bootstrap cwm recovery without unlocking it.
thanks,
I would like to use custom ROMS on my phone, can you do that without unlocking the bootloader?
i have CWM already also.
The only ROM available is an unofficial cyan 10.1 ... Its working alright for me so far. It was a pita unlocking it, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you know you want cyanogen (a buggy one).
Ignore my SIG, my 769 thinks its 760 now

[ROOT METHOD][KERNEL][ODIN][TAR]SCH-I545 MD2 Kernel (For Rooting)

DISCLAIMER:
Your device, your responsibility. I am not liable for anything you flash, including this.
As a result you'll probably want to read the rest of the thread and at least be aware of what you're flashing.
You've been warned.
Credits:
Thanks to the following for making this possible:
Anonymous sources for MD2 kernel
DJRBliss for Motochopper root exploit
Chainfire for SuperSU
jcase for setting the record straight on kernel root block (learn something new every day!)
And you, the community! Otherwise we wouldn't be here! Thank you!
Background:
The MDK kernel contains features that disable the su binary by default.
There are ways to bypass this once rooted but attempts to use Motochopper failed.
So we needed another way to get root.
...Enter the MD2 Kernel. At the moment one of the easiest doors into allowing Motochopper.
Download Links for MD2 Kernel TAR: http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=256
There are two mirrors posted on that thread.
Steps are pretty simple:
1) Enter Odin Mode - Hold Vol Down + Power from power off. (ADB reboot download also works with USB debugging on)
2) Flash MD2 kernel
3) Go to the Motochopper thread and follow the steps in OP.
Congratulations! You are now rooted.
Follow-Up/Notes:
1) You will want to go back to MDK kernel after rooted to avoid kernel/ROM mismatch and potential issues due to it. A few weeks ago this may have been an issue due to the root block but jcase has informed me that is corrected as of the latest SuperSU. So please update to latest SuperSU and flash back the MDK kernel. You can find a link to that here.
2) Warnings will now come up once rooted. You can suppress these by freezing SEAndroid.apk
Questions/Concerns/Etc.
Please post here if there are any questions, concerns, comments, etc. We're still human and can certainly make mistakes - I'll be happy to correct them if any are brought to light.

If you need to reflash stock via Odin before you take it in. That's the only way I know at the moment to get around it.
NM I had to unroot and reflash the kernel. Afterwards just flash the kernel to root them update the binaries (missed that step) and flashed the normal kernel. Problem solved.
