Battery drains while device is sleeping??? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there
I am aware that the Galaxy S3's battery isn't that great, but I have held an HTC One X for a while (which has an even worse battery) and it was actually much better than my S3's. The problem with the S3 is that it drains really hard while the device is actually SLEEPING. Like this morning I got up at about 9 AM and the phone was charging all night so it was 100%, so I decided to unplug the device and leave it till I got back (about 5 hours later) and it was already down to 89% or so. How does that happen? It's supposed to last much longer than that while it is sleeping, correct?
Here are some screen shots from Battery Stats Pro which I believe is the best battery application.

The developer of Battery Stats Pro is advertising another application for saving battery, I may go ahead and give it a shot but I remember trying a similar application on the HTC One X before which made things even worse.
I have been on the leaked 4.2.2 for a while now but the battery draining problem has been there ever since I got the phone, on 4.1.2, and I have tried many custom ROMs as well as deodexed 4.1.2, 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 but the problem remains, to a large extent, the same.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? I don't have local warranty because I purchased the device from abroad and I don't want to invest in another battery if it's going to be the same.
Any information and/or advice are much appreciated.
Thank you.

I forgot to mention that I have read a lot of guides regarding better battery times and modified the settings in order to achieve that, like Auto screen brightness, lowering volume, disabling touch sounds, haptic feed back, vibration, key-tap sound/vibrate and other things. I also changed Facebook's Refresh Interval settings from 1 hour (which I forgot to change) to Never; the only client that I set to Push is my hotmail account because I really need it.

Do you have a anti virus? They usually keep the four cores working all the time.

is the charger you're using samsung's original one?

On many devices i so this and i can tell you that you need to find the problem, but if i see right just try to uninstall Facebook (one of the bigger drainer) and the test it. Any app that try to connect to internet, even if wifi or data connection is off is a battery drainer.

Thanks for your replies. No i do not have an anti virus. Yes i am using Samsung original charger which is plugged in the wall port directly. Finally i do need Facebook and wouldn't want to in uninstall it but I'll give it a shot. Would i have to remove Facebook messenger as well?

my facebook runs all the time i connect to internet! that's not a problem. if you are rooted, you can manage start up programs using es task manager for example.

Use greenify and use betterbatterystats not the you using right now

Uninstall facebook messenger as the normal Facebook app can send massages too, also increase the notifications intervals.

i was having the same problems
i uninstalled the facebook app and just use facebook through a browser.. not that seemed to make it any better .
i also downloaded DS battery saver and set it to aggressive over night(need to manually set it every night though) .. didnt pin point the problem but stops it draining over night

@negri I did the exact same thing. I set DS Battery Saver to aggressive overnight and it works wonders, although as you said, it does not point out the problem. I am assuming, though, since all DS Battery Saver does is turn off mobile data overnight while the screen is off, maybe Mobile Data just uses a lot of battery and there's nothing we can do about it. It's either that or some applications are constantly connected to the internet all the time.

Try turning off mobile data/WiFi until you need to use it.

facebook and others app cause various wakelocks, syncs, etc, causing power consumption and battery drains. (look logs in your monitor battery stats and analysis it)
"i do using greenify too, it's better than traditional battery savers or task killers.
u can use greenify, but to use the real potential of this app, you need root to full hibernation. look the apk developer instructions and tips.
best regards"
you can try too battery saver with profile battery settings based in time or battery level scheduling.
greenify hibernate (just "zzz", not freeze or kill apps) users and system apps (system need root).

On average I lose 1% battery a hour with screen off. In good wifi/cell reception that is.
What do you folks do?
advance task manager works great, set it up to kill all apps at screen lock
1% an hour sounds about right. I'm not sure you're going to get much better than that. You could check out the battery drainers thread for info on finding wakelocks.

seem to help mine....
Its been discussed a number of times in various battery related threads. The issue is that you end up killing a lot of tasks the phone needs, so it has to restart them all the time, which is less efficient than leaving them running. If you have a rogue app draining your battery becuase it isn't shutting down there are better ways to deal with it.
Is this 1% an hour drain with the radio on or off? Ill have to check what mine gets with it on, but when i turn my radio off i get 1% drain every 4 or 5 hours

Bro, Seems like there is cell data been transferred when your phone is with screen off.
Awake (): 5 h 43 m 57 s (20637 s) Ratio: 94.5%
Screen On (): 1 h 12 m 49 s (4369 s) Ratio: 20.0%
This should ideally be equal, if you are not listening to music or downloading something with your screen off.
Do the following :
1. Remove the apps Social Hub with titanium backup
2. Uncheck Settings > Wifi Network > Mobile networks > USe packet data
3.Uncheck Location and security > a. USe wireless networks b. USe GPS satellites
and see if you are still getting the battery drain.
4. Uncheck Accounts ans sync > a.Background data b. Auto Sync
5. Goto market settings uncheck Google Admobile ads
Check if you are still getting the battery drains.
Hope this helps!

Just wipe cache and Dalvik cache from recovery and check if you are still having drain! If not try removing all the recently installed apps and check again.I believe one of the apps is trying to sync and keeping the phone awake.
Can i do that without a root?
Is there any chance it could be a hardware issue?

is it by any chance the new facebook app (looks more like the real facebook now?) I read quite many posts in regards to the partial wakelocks and the new facebook was one of them. The updated version is running a service that never lets the phone go to deep sleep. Search market for CPUspy (free) and it will show you what states your phone goes into for how long. Reset the stats before you go to sleep and wait overnight. Your phone should be around 90% or more in deep-sleep mode. If not, something does not let it go to deep sleep. I had the same problem, I'm currently running my phone for 1d6hrs with 50% of battery life still on it. I did a test and what I think based on BBS and CPUspy it was either the facebook app or SetCPU. During the night the phone was awake almost all the time along with the screen (even tho I was sleeping!). Another thing I noticed is that you have quite a high count on AlarmManager wakelock - that is a service used by many apps and that actually does not tell much unless you connect your phone to PC and extract the data from alarms. don't get confused, this is not your Alarm Clock, it's just a service that wakes up your phone at a scheduled time to check for updates. To check how long is the phone awake and difference after you've done some troubleshooting is under menu > more. It will show nice graphs.
In my case, my phone is rooted, running Criskelo v38, Siyah Kernel 2.6.7.. I uninstalled all app killers, stopped using FB app, switched off automated updates (checking if there are any updates from Market) and stopped using setCPU because Siyah 2.6.7 implemented new ondemand governor which merged ondemandX with lulzactive (not sure about the second governor now). Therefore all other governors became redundant. It sorted my problem with battery drain. Hope this helps a bit.
-EDIT-:
Sorry, Just noticed you already have CPUspy. Can you please submit a screenshot of the stats it's showing?
Btw i have the original battery with the original capacity of 1600 mAh

[Q] Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 batter drain due to google services!!!

Hi
I have a Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 running on WanamLite XXELKC V5.1.
I just put this new ROM in recently. But now I notice that my battery is getting drained faster than before. The stock battery stats shows that google services is the major contributor.
Any ideas ?
try to disable google now's features.. just open google now and then his settings..
if you have your s3 rooted, you might just delete/move the apps from /system/app folder to your sdcard,
i moved a lot of apps that were consuming battery and now its better so... just another way

The point is... Before tHis ROM, I was running the stock 4.1. 1, with even Google Now turned on....
So i should be able to do the same with this ROM too right.....
I've tried different roms and all the time the battery drain was due to google now
Turn off WiFi location access as when that's on maps will run in background as well as network location service.
Disable apps that run all the time (facebook, Whatsapp). I use App Quarantine to do this, places a widget where you can click to disable, clock to enable +open.
Reduce auto sync apps and their frequency. I generally only have gmail auto.
Before leaving your phone to sleep for 10+ minutes, kill background processes. Majority of the time my ruining apps is ONLY Android Keyboard, (set CPU if I feel like using profiles).

All of what you said does make sense....
I don't think that any of my settings have changed after getting the new ROM... So what i am trying to understand is why Google services is suddenly eating up all my battery.....
Anyhow, somewhere someone Suggested to delete all the accounts and add them again..... I tried that and somehow today Google services doesn't seem to be there in the list of battery draining apps......

No noticeable battery drain. Goes one and half day. I am not music and video guy, but 3G, emailing, sms, calls, wifi, etc on most of the time.
I disabled some bloatwares in app manager. Disabled MLT (lg log app) from hidden menu.
I use Advanced Task Killer, which stays in memory all the time and kills other unwanted background apps EVERY HALF hour in CRAZY mode.:good:Works perfect on all of my androids since last three years.
I also use Smart Profile which Automatically, Darkens screen to 20%, starts silent profile, switches off 3g/2g data, BT, wifi, etc all at 11pm automatically. In the morning the profile automatically changes back to normal at 7:30AM.

I think battery drain can be related to Media Scanner, it consumes a lot of cpu time and takes longer on my 32gb microsd.
I disabled its autostart and battery life is still good on Jelly Bean.
Do you see it in battery stats?

Yep I agree.
In android it's not a good idea to use a task killer.
Same here now i have 1gb ram. Okay 768mb stupid system eats 200mb+ but never less i dont use a task killer. It killes te ram it self doesnt lag. With my old lg o2x wirh 512 mb 380 with ram hack i used task killer other wise always lags.. but now nen is okay
AW: Jb battery
JB L9 has its own Taskkiller, so i've activated it, set to once per hour, lowest value.
And battery drain seems to be higher here, too. Maybe there will be some bugfixes in the near future, so currently no root for me.
I noticed battery drain, too
R: Jb battery
Problem is there is not a valuable reason for battery drain. We need to understand why with new jb there is battery drain. Hoping in an official fix by LG obviously.
As per my observation, I think main cause of battery drainage in JB is media scanning service wich runs too slow and consumes lots of battery. After stopping this service from running services, battery percentage stops getting down. But i am unable to freeze this service. One more reason to freeze this service is that we can't use any stock app related to media while media scan is running. I even don't know after freezing media scan what bad thing can happen.

Excesive battery drain on Existenz 3.5 due to... whatsapp?

My Z2's battery is draining really, REALLY fast. In a normal day I only use it to check whatsapp sometimes and mostly to hear some music.
I have Existenz 3.5 installed on my phone and I thought it might be rom related issue so I clean install a couple of times and nothing happened. Then, I checked on the battery stats and saw that the Whatsapp was the app that was consuming the most amount of battery (30%) then the Google Play Music (around 9%) and so on... So I decided to greenify Whatsapp... Still the same thing.
While all this happened I should say that auto sync was disabled, I was using 2G, the minimun brightness and barely turn my screen on.
After all this happened I decided to put the phone into Android's battery saving mode, still nothing happened. I don't now what to do, I also already calibrated my battery.
Is this soft-hard ware related problem? What should I do?
P.S.
I'll post the screen capture as soon as my phone wakes off it's dream.

Sound like the mobile radio active bug. Go to Settings -> Power Management -> Battery Usage and have a look at whatsapp. Does it look like my image below (note mobile radio active for hours)? If so, it's the mobile radio active bug and it's an android bug. You'll need to kill whatsapp or toggle mobile data on and off.

I bought my phone in February so I guess it's not that old. I already froze WhatsApp on Greenify.
Yes, the bat stats look like that, radio usage is waaaaaay big. But that workaround haven't helped me since I've been toggling it a couple of times per day (I go to college then to my home)
Something weird is that yesterday when I was at work sometimes I started to feel the heat on my leg and then I take out my phone and put it on my face, so I can now the temp better, and it was hot. I don't like that because I'm only listening music, c'mon
Thanks for the help.
P.S.
If there's a bad batch of Z2s, could you tell me the name so I can compare it to mine?

There's a Xposed module that may fix the problem for some people, you could try that.
Or turn mobile data off when you're not using it. And greenify doesn't kill an app or helping this issue at all it needs to be forced stopped.
Finally the heat could be related to this issue. The problem is that the phone keeps powering the antenna when it shouldn't be.

Or turn mobile data off when you're not using it. And greenify doesn't kill an app or helping this issue at all it needs to be forced stopped.
Finally the heat could be related to this issue. The problem is that the phone keeps powering the antenna when it shouldn't be.

I too had that problem. Try charging it too full and using battery callibrator callibrate it. Do a complete charge. U'll face severe drain after the first cycle of callibration. Then you'll get good battery life
