AOSP tried to *228, failed and lost LTE - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

As the title says I tried to reprogram my phone to see if it might pick up new towers with *228 while on an AOSP rom, the message said it was unable to program the phone and now it will only connect with 3G. I figured I could flash a TW rom and reprogram it there, however the TW just pops up a quick message saying the SIM is programmed without actually placing a call.
Is there any way to restore LTE once lost in this fashion? I've googled but couldnt find anything, I even reverted to stock in Odin hoping it would reprogram at boot but it did not solve anything.

You're never supposed to dial *228 from a LTE phone, it screws up your SIM card. The only way I have seen the problem fixed is to get a new SIM card by either going to a store or calling 611 and getting them to send it to you.
The correct way to force it to update, instead of calling *228, is to power down the phone, pull the SIM out, power on the phone, let it sit for 5 minutes, power it off and reinsert the SIM, and boot back up. Thats what works now with LTE SIMs.
I dont know if your SIM can be fixed or you will have to get a new one before LTE will work again but every time I have seen this happen the person always had to replace the SIM.

As stated above, you never use the *228 function to update an LTE device. A new sim is the solution.

Thanks guys, replacement sim is on its way.

I take it you mean a completely new SIM card, if the SIM card has already been used (like in your old phone) and you want to use it then just insert it into the phone. If its a SIM card thats already been used and you want to switch it to a new num ber you're **** out of luck. VZW only activates each SIM once and cannot, or will not, switch it to a different number.
If it is a completely new SIM card the call VZW and tell them you need to activate a new SIM and give them the info they need, which is usually just the number on the SIM card, and once they finish with it just pop it in your phone.

Changed phone number now I cant make any calls?

I just changed my number on my Rezound. I've been on the phone with customer service and they think my SIM card is the reason I cant make any phone calls. He said just take it up to the store and get a new card. With my phone being S-OFF and rooted, will that be a problem? Do I need to unroot?
None of that should affect getting a new SIM card.

Do they have to have my phone to install the sim card or could they just give it to my gf who is near the store and I could just do it here it home? Would they allow that? This is a pain in the ass.
Just make sure you don't have a boot screen that screams "I'M ROOTED" (pikachu sound) and you should be fine.

They don't care, I went in asking for a micro sim and I showed them it still works in the rezound
He assured me it wouldn't, I booted it up with it in and once he seen the splash screen show up(I have a snapdragon logo splash) he shut up and said "you probably know more about these phones than me right?"

Might not even need a new SIM, try dialing *228 and it will reactivate your phone.
Have you used google voice? After number changes I've had issues with google voice pooping its pants and blocking calls.

[Q] Phone goes into "Emergency calls only" mode ?

It seems that everytime I plug my phone to the charger for few hours, it goes into Emergency calls only mode where I have no data and no calls incoming nor outgoing. Only way to solve it is to restart the phone or turn Airplane mode on and off to reset. Is this a common problem ? Could it have happened from unlocking my boot loader and rooting ?
I'm considering switching to the custom ROM "the base" in order to maybe solve this
Well I think this is new. Could just be a bad sim card. I don't have this problem and I haven't seen anyone else mention having it. I'd go to where ever I got it and have them swap the sim and if that didn't work the phone.
I would open the sd card/sim card cover and make sure sim is inserted fully. It should lock into place and need to be pushed in further to eject. I used a paperclip to push it in.

I actually had this happen to me like two days ago. I had just texted someone before walking to the lower level of a mall to go shopping. I took a look at my phone a little later and my phone was stuck on Emergency Calls with no data coming in. The carrier on the status bar wasn't even there anymore. Restarted my phone and all was fine. Not sure what caused it.
I've had this the last two days in areas I've always had great service. Wonder what's up with it.

Base rom has this enabled, or you need to be rooted and edit build prop.
I had this happen last week. I did the airplane mode toggle to clear it... but it freaked me out for a few minutes.
Running The Base, sk8r's kernel during install, no change to the LTE setting, no crazy mods applied.
I also sit in a nearly-dead-zone at work, and I have lost the data connection. Moving into the clear does not fix the issue. Reboot has been required.
This Android App Might Help
I had just the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy S2 with UK mobile provider Three.
I eventually wrote an app called which reconnects whenever it detects that the phone has got locked into Emergency Calls Only.
Maybe it will be of use to you. Search Google Play for "Cell Reconnect". Seems I'm not allowed to post links here yet...
Figured it out for my phone
I got a refurbished LG optimus G E970 from a seller online and had this issue the second day of using it. I checked to see if it was the SIM or SD card by putting them into my old phone, but that wasn't it because the old phone still functioned properly making calls/messages. I even did a factory reset on the phone. Still didn't work. I finally just decided to change the mobile networks to my provider's GSM network and it worked. Not sure why it didn't work in the first place since I never changed the network, but this did the trick.

Hello. Could you please elaborate on how you fix that issue? I'm currently on T-mobile and my unlocked AT&T LG E980 is losing signal like crazy, just briefly loses signal and goes into emergency mode only. It is so annoying though. Would really appreciate any insight on it. Thanks.

Please help!

After taking my phone off the charger this morning I have had this white blinking triangle above the signal bars. I have tried everything, airplane mode factory reset, new rom and going through roaming settings.
Can anyone please advise what's going on? Bad SIM card possibly?
I still get calls and text, nothing different, just annoying!
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried re seating the sim card.

First thing is pull the sim out for about two minutes, then put it back in and power the phone up. Give it a few minutes to boot and settle.
You need to go into the phone's hidden menu and see if preferred network is set to CDMA+LTE/Evdo auto, if its still there I would try CDMA (auto PRL)
Depending on the rom you're using there's different ways to get to the phones hidden menu, In venom tweaks it's on the advanced or misc
Easy way to do it is go to the play store and search for "LTE On Off" and you'll find the LTE on/off app for the thunderbolt, install it and open the app, say ok to the dialog and it will be in the settings window that you need, it's just a shortcut.
After that go to the phones settings/about/network and see what is says for network type, service state, and roaming.
I did all of that. It says not roaming.
So weird!
Thanks for the reply!
Downloaded that app, 5 mins later triangle went away!
Wow, so weird!
Thanks!
Never mind its back. Any ideas?
Was there a reboot between when you got rid of the triangle and when it came back?
Run it on cdma auto or cdma for a day or several hours. See what that does and let us know and then also try LTE, CDMA. We need specific feedback from you on what its doing in what mode.
A possible solution is to go to the Verizon store and have them give you a new sim card.
Those sim cards are like everything else, theirs lemons in the bunch sometimes.
That may or may not solve the issue, its kind of a personal decision about if you want to troubleshoot it yourself to confirm or deny that its software related. Or you can go to the Verizon store and the them replace the sim card, or order a new one from customer service and have them mail it to you.

I'd try shimming the SIM card and cleaning the contacts. I've seen several users say that using a piece of scotch tape on the back of the sim card to snug up the fit solved this issue.
I'm having the com.phone.android force close and I've done everything but repartition this thing so I might PM you later on that topic. Pretty sure it will have to be a warranty return due to some hardware problem but I really don't want to give up this phone. It's so perfect, but I've donated it to a developer so if I can't fix it by tomorrow I'm sending it in.

[Q] SCH-I545 Sim Unlock

I've searched quite a bit and I saw a few threads that said that the Verizon GS4 comes sim unlocked. But I put in a friends Sprint Sim and I got an error message that said "non verizon sim." I also saw tutorials on how to go into the phones menu by typing *#06# or *#0011# but these do not work on my phone. Is there a code that will work on my phone? Also, do I have to install a custom ROM on this phone to get the sim unlocked? I really don't want to go that route but if I have to I will.
Sprint SIM probably isn't compatible. Try a GSM carrier SIM.
I tried the T-mobile version Straight Talk card and it says the same. "non-verizon SIM"
OK. I found out that you have to enable the hidden menus first. There is a forum here that talks about it. It's titled [how to] Enable Hidden Menus for Verizon Galaxy S4. And from there you can sim unlock.
I've seen reports that people where getting non- verizon sim message but phone still worked on other carriers.
This is true. I have put in an active ATT sim got "non-Verizon SIM" message and could still make calls and Internet from the ATT SIM.

Are they capable of doing this with the S4? Assuming they are, are you speaking theoretically or with certainty? Could you confirm via experience or perhaps cite the information?
Reason I'm asking I tried to use a non-Verizon sim once with limited success on an S3. Called Verizon to see if it was a sim-lock related issue and they insisted that the phone shipped as unlocked as could possibly be, which would contradict your statement assuming the same holds true for the S4.

Sorry I misunderstood. Don't mention sim unlock to them since the cdma doesn't use the sim. There is another thread floating around here that mentioned this but I couldn't find it. What it boiled dien to was telling that you are traveling overseas and would like them to unlock cdma. This doesn't Guarantee that they will. Sorry I couldn't find the link.

Actually it's quite easy to do. You go on your My Verizon account, or call them and add the $4.99 international package. That does NOT include any data, only the capability to use it on CDMA elsewhere or the Global option on your Verizon Sim.
I recently traveled to Sweden and have used several different Verizon phones (with International SIM) outside the USA and not had issues.
The "Non-Verizon" sim message has absolutely no bearing on being able to use another sim in the phone, its UNLOCKED. If it's a GSM simcard voice will work no problem, data you have to add APN in. You cannot use a Sprint SIM because like Verizon they use authentication by way of ESN or IMEI to be registered on their CDMA network. So it just won't authenticate.
So you don't need to SIM unlock, it's already unlocked.
I tried L720 unlock mode, failed

Adding this feature does not cost anything on my unlimited plan. Only if you want to add additional global data and voice rate plans does it cost to enable the feature.
OK so in that case how do we get 3g and higher speeds when using other Sims? I took mine too ATT they put in the sim and still wouldn't get more then Edge data, We also have a Ver S3 that we have on ST prepay and put in the APNS and we still can't get above edge data either. Here the thing, the s4 is global ready yet it still has some kind of lock to prevent data so has anyone ever contacted Verizon after theit contract to come about unlocking their device to use on other carriers? What is the point of buying these phones, if they won't unlock then for us after contact is up? It would still be there phone, seems were just leasing it cause we can't take it with us to another carrier. Any guide to get these unlocked for3g and data please?!!

Hey guys I went to unlock my Verizon s4 via the service menu and everything worked fine. My tmobile I'm card works. But now when I put my Verizon sim card back in it only gets 1x service and sometimes it says im roaming. I tried clicking the default apn changing from global to cdma fixes it for a split second. And when I go to status it just says network unknown. I cleaned my sim and no luck. What could be wrong!?!
