ok, so i just rooted and unlocked my phone, and i am gonna start removing some bloatware from the phone, but am concerned because i don't want to delete an app that i think is bloatware, but it is tied into another appp and then both apps won't work.
for example, if i delete viewdini, i don't know if that will affect how i watch videos on the phone.
so what i am asking is basically if there is a list of all the stock samsung/amazon/google/verizon bloatware apps that i can safely delete?

just downloaded the file from the cleanrom build of what scott removed... is it safe to say if i remove these i will be ok?
The pro version of titanium backup is ideal for this. You can freeze apps before you remove them to find out if they're important or not. I don't know of an official cheat sheet of what's safe to remove but if you look at ROMs and what the devs have removed, that's a good start to let you know what you can do without.

If you delete an application you will NOT get Verizon phone updates. It's better to freeze the applications with Titanium Backup.

Deleted or froze? If you deleted you better habe a backup or you wont get Verizon updates.

I've just rooted my device for the first time, I'm using Titanium Pro to freeze stuff on this list (I figured freezing would be safest being a noob)...but more than half of them dont even appear in Titanium, and none of the files show .apk on them. Is there another method being used to see these files?
What is the advantage to freezing them vs. disabling them in the regular system manager?

Some applications can't be disabled in the system. So you have to freeze them instead. Freezing allows you to unfreeze them if Verizon releases a software update. If you delete them however you will never get a software update.

The only reason for a sotware uodate is if you plan on staying stock. Mind you verizon will more than likely patch root access and the loki method of bypassing the bootloader in future updates. In my experience rom devs usually stay on top of adding all must have features that would be included in ota updates without loosing root and recovery.

True but someone will always find a new method. Voodo OTA rootkeeper might even work to restore it.

Uninstall removes the application completely. Freezing however simply renames it to something else that way the program/process/app can't be used. Also, in the event that you need to update, you can simply go back and rename the original file back to it's original extension as some critical system apks are required for updates in certain phones.

I thought freezing meant re-nicing that process to some special state, when kernel doesn't designate any CPU cycles to it, yet it still hangs in memory.

You may be correct, I have no idea. Basing from the context in this thread however, I'm nearly certain in this specific case however, what he means by freezing is what I stated.

You can take out the internet but some of the HTC stuff most likely needs it. Also Chrome does not support Adobe Flash player where i am sure the internet one does. If you want to make chrome a System app, you do this with TB. Just long hold the app you want to make a system app in TB and click convert to system. This will move the app from the user data to the system. If you wipe the phone the app will still be there but will just need to be updated. An easy way to find bloatware is to freeze the app under TB and if you have problems you know that the system needs it. You can just go and unfreeze it and use it again. If you uninstall something and do not make a backup of it, chances are you are going to run into problems.

If you just have root the system files are not writable. You have to flash a writable kernel. Root and stock kernel will not let you R/W it will say it did and confirm, but upon reboot, well you already know that.
Check out some custom kernels to access those advance features. I am on bulletproof right now. Pretty slick

Thanks! I ended up choosing 'freeze' for now which is good enough for me.
EDIT: Needed a writable kernel to force uninstall talk in order to install the new hangouts. everything went great! installed this kernel:

I've removed most of the bloatware via TB (not frozen: everything is backed-up and un-installed) so my question is whether I need to reinstall all these apps before running the "upgrade" or whether I can run the "upgrade" with my current state of affairs?

It seems there are some people having problems and some people who do not. I was lucky and took the OTA with no problems, but I did have Survival Mode turned on in Super SU. I have never seen a list of what apps successful people have removed vs what apps unsuccessful people have removed. I've removed a few of the Verizon apps and frozen a few apps as well.

It's my understanding to take OTA...The stock needs to be pretty much stock. Mk2 not any thing big. Have you thought just freezing the programs that are giving you the notification?

What do you mean by that? No apps have notified me of anything yet. I was just wondering how stock stock needed to be for the OTA.
As far as my progress is concerned, I have restored all my backups via Titanium Backup, even unrooted via SuperSU but the OTA still fails with error code 402. Interestingly, the bootloader still shows the "custom" logo with the unlocked lock symbol so I think it has something to do with that although at this point I'm not sure what is "custom" about my phone ...

You need to flash the no wipe stock tar for mj7. There is a post in android dev for it. That will get rid of the custom screen and allow the ota to Take.

Yes, once you root the phone you can download Titanium backup (full version) and freeze SDM
As I believe that the SDM is the file that manages the communication for updates

Well that depends. Progress is definitely being made towards another bootloader unlock. However, the 4.4 update would possibly introduce even more security that the devs haven't seen before.
But using titanium or just renaming sdm.apk to sdm.bak with a file explorer (must be rooted) will stop the updates.

Once you root download and install TitaniumBackup and the key (the money you spend for the key is really worth it!) Then you can freeze SDM as well as FWUpgrade. This will prevent your phone from upgrading.

Your BEST bet is to use TitaniumBackup and make a backup of all the files you want to "get rid of". Once you make those backups, you can have TitaniumBackup uninstall those apps. Now if something happens you can easily reinstall those apps through TitaniumBackup. You can also have TitaniumBackup backup location to be your extSdCard and not on your phone, this way your backups aren't eating up space on the sdcard (internal sdcard)
I have frozen ( thru TitaniumBackup) all the apps you are talking about and I'm not having any problems.

rest assured, that every subsequent firmware release by samsung/verizon will lock down whatever exploits we are using even more.
Summary of my system: I have a SPRINT SPH-L720T MK5 4.3 model phone. I am rooted with k1mu SafeRoot and have about twelve system apps (including the touchwiz launchers) frozen with Titanium backup. I use nova launcher as my primary launcher. I wish to remain rooted and according to things I read on the saferoot thread, I cannot receive OTA updates while apps are frozen, yet I received new notification this morning on my phone that says "System Update Downloaded. Touch to install".
I read the thread. I froze FWUpgrade. Not sure what SDM stands for, and I don't see a SDM in the list but when I type SDM in the filter it brings up a service called "System Update 1.8.8". I froze it also, assuming it's the right one.
I restarted the phone and the "System update downloaded. Touch to install" notification is still on my screen.
1) Is there any way to get rid of the notification after it has already spawned? I don't want to accidentally click on it at a later time.

Go to /cache/fota/ on your phone. There will be an Update.zip. Delete or rename that and the update prompt will go away.

I went to the top of the tree and found the cache folder but there were no sub folders (i.e. "fota"). I also ran a search on the entire tree for a "fota" folder and did not find one. I also ran a search on the entire tree for "update.zip" and didn't find one.
Is it possible, that my freezing the "FWUpgrade" and "System Update 1.8.8" automatically removed the fota folder and the update.zip? That seems unlikely.
or is it possible that I'm dealing with a completely different update (perhaps it's not 4.4, maybe it's something else all together)?

Sorry, broken memory - looking at my notes it's actually /cache/fumo/OTApkg.zip
Note that you have to be root to view the contents of the /cache folder.

Ran a search across my whole device for OTApkg.zip. No file found.
Please allow me to restate a few things:
1) I have no subfolder under "/cache". I do not have a "fumo" or "fota". I have nothing in my "/cache" folder.
2) On my Sprint SPH-L720T Tri Band phone, I do not have a "SDM" app process. When I type "SDM" in my titanium backup, it brings up a app process called "System Update 1.8.8". I don't know if I should have froze this, but I did.
3) I ran a search across my whole device for *.zip to return all .zip files. I did find a "/system/etc/security/otacerts.zip". Not sure if I should do anything with that.

Also, I am rooted. I used your saferoot two months ago. I just went into my file manager app and found a root option. I turned it on and the file manager app requested super user privilege which I granted. Now I can see sub folders under cache, but none of them match your description.
I do see a obvious file called " 0de568e284baa2bbcb25305b099be7cc415386de.USER_L720T_SPT_MK5_to_NAF_Update_FWD.zip". See enclosed pic.
I moved it to my sd card. Do you think I'm OK to press the update option now to make it go away?

This is a misplaced thread.
bgmg doesn't have a Verizon phone, it's a Sprint phone. That's why suggestions to freeze SDM/FWUpdate don't work.

I would like to finally update my phone to 4.4.2 but not sure how to go about it. If I take the verizon update, will I lose root still? Or what is the best method to update?

Best method is a matter of taste... And also depends on your base. mdk? Me7? Mdk sell phone buy a new one ..
I prefer using the no wipe tar files to update with. Benefit is that you keep your data, and in one shot you go straight to the most current update. Downside is you must download some software and use a PC. Others prefer to take each OTA one at a time. It's slow but "official" so if your on MDK you would download and update about 5 times.

if you're on MDK you NEED TO KEEP IT. I can't stress enough how important that bootloader is. NEVER TAKE AN OTA ON MDK.
If you're on ME7 or newer then yeah you could OTA. you'll lose root but your data will be salvaged. i think you have to go to 4.3 before 4.4 so that's a thing

Look to see if these two files are frozen/disabled: FWUpgrade.apk and SDM.apk
This one could be frozen as well: fota.client.apk

First I wanted to thank everyone for their responses, I was able to unfreeze the OTA. However, I am now currently on MI1 and every time I try and update via OTA , I get a "failed" message with the Android guy on his back.
Any idea how I can get this update?
Same thing hapenned to me. I fixed this by unrooting and factory reseting my s4 and it updated without any problems

Did you lose everything when doing a factory reset?
Yup, factory resetting deletes user data and the internal memory. If you have an sd card then you can transfer your files onto there so it is not lost in the process

Same issue many of us have had with ota.
Some where along the line, and a system app has changed. If all the system apps aren't perfect, it will fail during ota.
Since you don't really know which app is causing it, the only way to update via ota is by doing a factory reset.
This will restore all the system apps back to normal, and then you can ota. It will wipe everything.
Use Tibu to save your apps and data, change the back up location to the extsdcard. Backup your texts and call logs using Smsbackup from the play store. And move anything on the emulated sdcard0 slot of the phone back to the extsdcard.
If your using a custom launcher like Nova, you can save your home screens to the sdcard as well and fully restore after you reroot.
If you don't have a custom launcher, and just take screen shots of your home screens, you can use those to remind you of your layouts.
Its not as complicated as it seems, and shouldn't take very long over decent wifi.
But a factory reset (through the phone, and not a custom recovery) will wipe the internal storage, so make sure everything is on the external sdcard.
May I ask which "Smsbackup" you recommend?

Since you don't really know which app is causing it, the only way to update via ota is by doing a factory reset.
This will restore all the system apps back to normal, and then you can ota. It will wipe everything.
Use Tibu to save your apps and data, change the back up location to the extsdcard. Backup your texts and call logs using Smsbackup from the play store. And move anything on the emulated sdcard0 slot of the phone back to the extsdcard.
If your using a custom launcher like Nova, you can save your home screens to the sdcard as well and fully restore after you reroot.
If you don't have a custom launcher, and just take screen shots of your home screens, you can use those to remind you of your layouts.
Its not as complicated as it seems, and shouldn't take very long over decent wifi.
But a factory reset (through the phone, and not a custom recovery) will wipe the internal storage, so make sure everything is on the external sdcard.

May I ask which specific "Smsbackup" app from the play store you recommend? (a link? Or name the developer or whatever?) I want to jump up from 4.2.2 rooted as well and I already have Titanium Backup PRO, but when I searched the Play Store for "Smsbackup" I got a load of results
(Actually, unless I'm incredibly dense and have missed a memo, I practically ALWAYS have trouble selecting apps from Google Play. I find the search results to be rubbish and even knowing the app name unhelpful because of the copy-cat namers who seem to flood the store with wannabe crap that just sounds like what you're looking for. Hope I'm wrong about this and there's actually a correct way to find what you want there. Would hate to think Google is suddenly incapable of conducting simple search functions well. *lol*)
Anyway, thanks in advance if you can help me backup my txts and call logs. That really would be a great assist. BTW, do you know, will the resulting backups contain attached pictures, and etc., for the txt threads?
