After cca 6-7 months of using my phone, AR coating of camera lens is almost completely gone and pictures with strong light sources have ridiculous halo effects and strong haze. Am I alone with this problem?
I try to be nice on my phone, no scratches, it sits alone in my pocket and still lense of camera looks like really worn out, with lots of microscratches. Thought it is glass, but seems like some cheap plastic to me now

I had the same issue. Unfortunately the camera lens is plastic and can scratch. I found a thread which told me how to clean up the scratches pretty well. It had me put a Q tip in a power drill and apply toothpaste to it and on a slow speed, buff the lens. It worked quite well. The halo and smoky glare is gone. Of course it was white cream toothpaste, not a gel. And it took about 2 minutes of buffing with very light pressure.

Gave up on rma, used electrical toothbrush and toothpaste, after 2m broken antireflex coating was gone and camera is perfect again. Why dothey aply this crap on lens, when it couldnt hold for half an year? Happy to have working cam again...
Will cleaning the antireflex coating have any effect for the long run? My lens is a bit scratched as well, but I haven't noticed any problems with pictures.
Low lighting ones are a bit weird, but I can't recall how they were at the very beginning when I got the phone.
Mine had really bad halo around any stronger light source and general haze over whole picture...

So the problem is, that the body design of the hox+ (like older HTCs phones), has one major issue: When you put it on a flat surface i. e. table face up, it lays on two points: The first is somewhere down besides the loudspeaker, which is ok, but the second is the camera ring and/ or the camera glas (?) cover. I know there is already a thread regarding the material(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128442&highlight=camera+cover) , of which the cover is made of, but nobody was really sure about that. Because of this issue, i had to send in my device some weeks ago, because the scratches on the cover influenced the picture quality heavily ( bloom-effect ; there are some threads too) . In the end the phone is still getting repaired (status: "waiting for parts".:crying and im thinking about how to solve the problem for the future. I´m no smartphone- rapist, just the opposite thing and it was bought on 10th January, so i was really wondering: why the hell are so many and so fast scratches on the camera glas cover? Would it be meaningful to cut a display glas foil to the size of the camera objective?? In the matrial-thread, somebody was talking about a special "anti glare coating" so maybe you could polish the lense lets say every 4th month with a appropriate polish spray ??? I have always used a bumper to protect the phone, but nevertheless the scratches came! So what to do? And of course this is not a single problem, i suppose, so this increases the importance of this thread/question....
For the camera have you try to take off your bumper and shoot...cause some bumper is bad and it affects the camera when you shoot while using the lights..
The glass if you scared to scratch it...just use the scren protector and cut round until it fits...
The scratch camera glass I think is not affect picture quality accept if you colour the glass with ink..hahha joking

No I think you didn´t understand the problem of the camera bloom effect: The special anti glare coating is damaged and this causes photos with a lot of bloom, unclearness and bad colours, because the chip is not able to choose the right parameters for "white balances" and other different adjustments, that usually are set automatically. The bumper should only show, how I care about my phone....
I was looking at a faint scratch on the glass cover and I noticed that it moved. As in the whole thing, within the outer ring, as if it was mounted on some sort of suspension, Is it possible the glass lens protrudes slightly from the outer ring, making it a point of contact as opposed to the outer plastic ring? Just a thought.
Have you take out the bumper or back cover what ever you call it...and try to shoot...is your phone custom rom or

I only had my HTC One a few days when I noticed 2 small scratches on the camera lens. I had a TPU case on it but the HTC One camera lens is pretty much flush with the back. So the case did not provide much protection to the lens when I placed the phone front side up. Kind of disappointed to discover the scratches. For such a premium phone I would expect HTC to use a glass lens or something. Now I'm forced to use an Otterbox case to provide better protection and/or remember to place the phone face down everytime on my desk.

it could be alot worse. many of us are having our camera lenses crack on us outta nowhere without physical damage. id rather have the scratches personally cuz htc refuses to help..
Usually when buying s new phone the first things I do is lapping s screen protector and, if possibe cut a protective piece for the camera
I was gonna topic such a question about camera lenses before u asked this.
It's very easy to nik scratch the glass lens.
I havent figured a way yet ....but the cutting a circle from a screen protector and leaving the eye open is a good idea.
INFACT....the s4 comes with one over the lens only the eye is exposed.
Best scenario for now is to be careful and use micro fiber to clean it off every now and again.

You're not alone here man.. I mean I had my phone for a month using an incipio dual pro (which is really good and really protective) and my camera lens is COMPLETELY scratched. And I clean it every week so to avoid it scratching. But everyday I notice one more scratch. I sent an email to htc to see what they say but man, it's freaking annoying.. We bought a premium smartphone with cheap Chinese lenses.. Don't understand what they did.. My S3 was treated way more badly and it's in perfect conditions.
Mine has a lot of scratches. Luckly they are not in the middle lens area.
I have this smudge on my camera lens. So when I take pictures, if I turn my phone just the right way, there's this glare on the camera. This smudge won't come off, either. I don't know what to do. It doesn't bother all too much, but if the right amount of light and particular angles can make it a nuisance.
I've uploaded pictures to show you all how it looks. One image you can clearly see the smudge. On another it looks like nothing is there. Then I tried to take one where it's slightly there. I think it's the middle one. LoL!!
Is there anything yet on fixing how horrendous this camera is? Recently I've been trying to take more pictures inside and realize that it's actually almost unusable. I really love the outdoor shots with this camera, but inside I feel like I got far better pictures with my first camera phone in 2002. At first I thought it was just overly contrasting lighting.. but I'm realizing I can't take a single picture indoors without everything being horribly washed out and blurry. I have all camera settings on default. I can't seem to find any settings or changes that can fix this.
Look at the camera glass (usually the bigger one) and see if any scratches are evident. Its very common on this phone, that the coating on the camera glass (not the glass itself) is scratching and peeling away. This causes the photos to become blurry, and depending on the lighting condition (outside seems worse) lots of glare or lens flare from contrasting light. The scratches on the coating are usually quite evident with visual inspection of the camera glass.
The fix is to buff/remove the coating and expose the smooth glass underneath. Users have given various substances to do this: toothpaste, car wax, alcohol. But in any case, use just a little and go slowly. Just buff hard enough to remove the coating. And if this is in fact your issue, you will find the pics look much better afterwards.

Very cool man. My lens is indeed scratched to **** with micro scratches (even though it's always been cased). I was in fact really disappointed about this, I didn't know it had some sort of coating. I'll give this a shot.

Yeah, it seems like they used some very cheap, or at least easily damaged, coating. Some have presumed it to be some kind of anti-glare coating.
Mine has always been in a case, and got scratched over time as well. It got gradually worse over the course of about 3 months. I buffed the coating off with toothpaste, and its been fine every since (4-5 months). The phone has been in a TPU case, which doesn't actually cover the camera, but has a cutout for it, which would prevent it from contact most flat surfaces its laid against.
I tried the toothpaste method... and I was actually quite blown away. You can see a pure, shiny surface in the middle, and I left a ring of thousands of scratches around the edges. It's amazing how crappy that coating is.. whatever it is. And yes, that was my camera's issue. Finally things are in focus and have natural colors again.

Nice, glad it worked for you.
Yeah, I too wasn't quite able to remove the coating along the edge where it meets the metal. But as you likely realized, this is far away from the actual camera lens (which is actually quite small) and therefore the remaining coating doesn't affect the pics at all.
Actually I decided to leave it there on purpose. Thinking it might help to still reduce glare from the edges.

I bought the Sony Xperia Pro-I in the beginning of December 2021 and love how this phone captures pictures. They are simply put amazing.
Unfortunately, the quality of the phone is much left to be desired. As you can see on the pictures, the fingerprint sensor is chipped or scratched. The camera lens has a deep scratch. The rear panel housing has some sort of black spots that cover almost all of the back panel.
I know some of you might say that I am being careless but that is not the case. I always use my phones in cases and have a tempered glass screen protector on. I am very careful not to put the phone inside with any keys, sharp objects or the like. I had many phones including phones from Apple, Oneplus, Samsung, Xiaomi, Google etc and never ever had I had a scratch on a camera lens or some dark spots on the rear panel of the phone or even a scratch on a fingerprint sensor.
May anyone tell me if they are experiencing the same kind of faults with this phone? Does anyone know what are those black spots on the rear housing?
Notes:
- I noticed that dust collects really quickly inside the cases that I use and I always take the case off just to clean with a soft cloth the dust and then put it back in the case.
- The dark spots on the rear panel housing don't come off when I try to wipe it with a soft wet cloth or even with alcohol.
The ‘sratch” on the lens is rather a crack, the ring is also dented there, not sonys fault. The fingerprint probably got hit by somethins as well. But the back glass imperfections are disappearing, maybe you something got spilled on it. Mine looks perfect, brand new, have daily driven it since Jan. Use the sony leather case, which was a disappointment, the fake leather “melted” and came off. Junk.
I think you've got unlucky and something hit your camera lens quite hard. My Pro-I is in use since December without a case and it's still in nearly mint condition.
Agree. I owned 2 Pro-i and was very disapointed with the build quality. Back cover was not tight, and the bezel coating is easily damaged with nail scratch. After using a few weeks, the back cover will have some stains like grease...
Has anyone else also noticed dust gathering relatively rapidly over the 3x lens especially when using cases which completely surround it? A lot of cases have this style now, presumably because it helps with lens protection - I'd rather it actually have more opening with the Flash LED and Laser AF though, so that dust can more spontaneously distribute away and not accumulate over the 3x lens. The other larger lenses don't seem to have this issue, presumably because there's a larger surface area for the dust to distribute and spontaneously move away.
What's interesting though is that despite the 3x lens looking quite dusty in appearance, it doesn't appear to affect photo/video quality, which is somewhat counter-intuitive - how bad does it need to get before it affects this? Perhaps smudges are more of an issue than dust particles over a lens?
Finally, I'd be interested in simple suggestions to clean the dust off the lens in this particular scenario, without removing the case - it's actually quite hard to do this over the 3x lens, as the access to it is quite limited due to being a relatively small hole, and the dust tends to be quite stubborn!

No dust accumulation around the 3X lens in either of them.
Is it possible your particular case material holds more static electricity and attracts dust particles? I'm just thinking out loud here, no particular evidence.

I think the "single long vertical pill cutout" will accumulate less dust - intuitively, that's simply the "laws of physics"! That is, a larger cutout will tend to accumulate less dust due to my explanation in the first post.
Regarding static electricity, I don't think so for my case, since it's leather. Do you carry your phone in your pocket often? I find that's the main way the dust accumulates for me.

Yes, pant pockets for most of the day unless i'm drviving, in which case it's on the dashboard mount. For the last few days its been in the individual punch-hole type case but i still don't see any dust around the 3x camera.

Yes I think it depends on what pockets. Some of mine don't collect dust as quickly, but I have certain shorts which seem to spray dust at the lens!

You can actually see some dust quite clearly even on that photo I think, including a quite large "S-shaped" particle over the 3x lens. It also appears there are tiny white specks over and around the lens too, and if I remember correctly, you only had the phone for a few days at the time of the photo. I'd like to see a follow up picture now (assuming you haven't done any cleaning at all over the 3x lens).

That S shaped thing is a strand of lint from my pocket, and its "on" the lens, not around it. I've found this common with all phones I've owned, especially when using cotton/linen trousers. There isn't much dust collected around the lenses to my naked eyes (with zooming in on a well focussed, hi-res pic, some particles may be visible i guess)
Since then I've bought myself a bunch of cases to play around with. The recent ones have individual camera cutouts with no space for dust to collect - so I don't think they will be very helpful. But I'll post an image anyway. The pics attached are with the official Samsung Clear Case. Has been on the phone since the 19th of this Month.
I have UAG Plyo case and carry usually in jeans pocket. Now I can confirm too that 3x lens is magnet for dust, more than other lenses with autofocus circle too.
In next days I try samsung leather cover with flat sheet and observe maybe difference in this case.
You know you can literally just WASH the phone! It's water resistant. I do it all the time to keep dust off!
No doubt best under a Samsung faucet...

With size (big like you know) S23U sitting with this holster hooked to belt is very uncomfortable and risk broke phone.
Maybe with standard S23 but not with S23U in my opinion.
I tested leather holster for belt with my old Note 9 few years ago and used him maybe only several times.
Next of course only for me but walk on the street with similar big holester is strange ( magnet looking other people).
But it's idea for solve problem from topic.

Yes it is uncomfortable at times particularly getting in and out of a service truck!
But I've never broken a phone or even come close to having damage and I've had all the "big boys" including folds on my hip doing various things including climbing radio towers! The thought of having it in a pocket in such places is like fingernails dragging across a chalkboard, not to mention pulling out the phone when needed. It just glides in and out easy. If I ever wanted to go naked that's the way I'd go.
If carrying vertically and your shirt is pulled over some may think you're packing and that could be good or bad depending on the situation. :-|

Any lint/dust gathering is part of my point though. To clarify, it's inevitable that dust will eventually gather around/over the lenses - it's not a matter of "if" (something that you seem to be implying at least), but of "when".
In general, I've noticed that the dust gathering really only starts becoming more noticeable after 5-7 days. After 11-14 days, it becomes quite significant to the point that one wonders how it's not affecting camera footage (but it doesn't appear to do so somehow). I think definitely specific shorts/trousers material will contribute more dust than others, so it's hard to compare my use to eg. yours specifically. However, my ultimate point was that the dust tends to gather at a faster rate over the 3x lens due to what I've already explained, and that cleaning it is quite a hassle with the cases which completely surround it - from my experience, essentially to clean it properly/well, you need to completely remove the case, which is a bit disappointing relatively speaking.

That's fair enough, although surprised you feel that way. There is no difference in opinion that I can see - we both agree that lint/dust gathers on/around the lens (you even showed it in many of your photos). Inevitably, this lint/dust will get worse and worse with time if you never clean it. We also both agreed (I think) that different material shorts/trousers and/or environmental conditions can contribute to rate of dust gathering.
These are all obvious things though, much like how everyone would concede that they get fingerprint marks/smudges on the front of their screen which "needs" a purposeful clean/wipe every now and then.
Ultimately I was actually hoping someone could comment on this query in my original post:
"...simple suggestions to clean the dust off the lens in this particular scenario, without removing the case"

Case without higher places/circles around camera lenses which can more move dust in pocket
I had a Spigen Rugged Armour and a Ringke Onyx, both of which have the precise cutouts, and both of which resulted in dust collecting. I really liked both of these cases, but have now settled on a Spigen Optik Armor for just this reason - the sliding door keeps the lenses absolutely pristine with no dust, fingerprints, or risk of scratching. I am wondering buy Spigen Optic Armor for good protect but not too bulky like my UAG Plyo so I looking to slimmer case.
Camel leather cover which gift for buy phone look very nice, good in touch but I am affraid about will do micro scratch after time on the lenses from carry in pocket.
Can you tell me about your impressions this armor optik?
