[Q] Shatter proof sheet/pre applied screen protector - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi People,
just wondering if the Sony logo will come off with taking that thing off. Anyone experienced how scratch resistent the "real" glass of our Tablet is?
On my Xperia Arc S I took it off in the first month of use...got it almost 2 Years now and only 2 noticeable scratches.

I may do so today with my german version. I would pretty appreciate it would come off.
You got a full black glass front then
With cm10.1 on it i will have a nexperia tablet z without the logo.

After much hesitation, I finally got around to remove the pre installed film last night.
It is not easy to remove , but it is worth it. You get better touch sensitivity and clearer picture; and it feel so much better to touch actual glass than plastic!
Use a blade or a sharp object near the corners to lift the film up carefully without scratching anything else.Fingernails didn't do the job for me!
After you have lifted a good amount of the film, you can pull the rest by hand; but it doesn't come off easily and will leave some residue behind. Use a clean cloth to remove the residue. Voila!

Nope. I think that happens only to certain models of the Xperia Z phone.
Though I personally would have been happy if it did come off; don't care too much for the branding and would have liked a plain black front

Will the screen scratch easier without the film, or is it som sort of gorilla glass under the film?

I don't remember exactly the spec, but I am pretty sure it is scratch resistant glass but not the 'gorilla' brand.
I hate screen protectors and am okay with a few minor scratches as long as the don't interfere with the screen when its on.
Worst case, I got Sony Care if the screen gets really damaged and hopefully can get it replaced.

I expect the anti shatter film to be similar to the one in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GzYnDnZDRg
I'm keeping it on the tablet, at least for now.

Sir, you mentioned that you have already removed pre applied screen protector on your Xperia Arc S, so I was wondering is that this layer about half of millimeter smaller than the whole screen?
please answer as soon as possible.
Thanks!

It's the layer which stands out a bit if you look from the side or feel it with your fingernail. I recommend something like a thumbtack or something else sharp to remove it but watch out not to damage your screen! The screen may be sticky after removing it. Just wash it with a wet cloth some times and after 1 or 2 days of usage it will be gone.

Has anyone managed to scratch the screen (not screen protector) yet?

Today I received a screen protector in the mail (came free with a case), so I decided to change out the old one that came pre installed on the X10. Of course once everything was removed and when I started to apply the new one, all of the dust in the house was magically attracted to the new one, rendering it useless.
I'm now stuck without a screen protector, and have growing paranoia that my screen is going to get messed up. Looks like I'll have to order a new one.
Until then, does anyone have an X10 with the protector removed? Has your screen scratched after extended normal use?
I'll probably be stuck without one for a week so I hope it lasts.
Truth : I suspect you won't have much success, if any, finding someone who's successfully scratched their X10 screen. There is one user however, who's succeeded in cracking the screen -- I remember having read a thread about it

Well you've got at least two now, momerbk and gavriel18 on another thread has stated his is "mashed" now due to not having one, so I'd get one on asap.
Not forgetting the guy who's was run over, that was pretty scratched
I've gotten some minor scratches but they are very hard to see... and from my personal tests the X10 screen hides scratches better then the Dell Streak

Rofl, I saw that one as well, although it doesn't really fit into my "normal use" category
I'm pretty careful with my stuff, I'll just have to avoid buses until I get a new screen protector lol.
This thread is somewhat putting me at ease though!
Semi related: Are there any scratch test videos for the X10?
Multiple scratches and a chip. Still don't know how I managed that...
haha lol. I scratched mine within 3 weeks ... I have now one big scratch and a few little scratches blegh.
Are you guys sure you really scratched the glass or is it just the original screen protector? The original screen protector scratches very easily. That is why I removed mine and replaced it with something better.
mine is still mint, I work in bean processing plant(dusty), spend most of my days off at the beach with the kids. That's no proof that it won't get scratched one day but I doubt it will make people think less of me if i have a scratch on my screen

I'm pretty sure they all have them stock. Take a closer look at the lower part of the screen near the buttons. You should be able to see it there. it is an exact fit protector so it's almost impossible to see that it's there.

Hmm it does look that way, although I can't seem to get it if it's is one) off
Another quick question:
I've heard that some of the better screen protectors can actually hide previous scratches once they are applied, is that actually true?
I've ordered both the clear coat screen protector and also that free stealthguard protection thing, so I'm hoping that one of those will be sufficient

I put one of the free stealthguards on mine Saturday. I only used he screen guard not the full body though. It was a little difficult to get the oem screen protector off but only until you get it started. Once it starts peeling it comes off fairly easy.
i have my phone in a leather case without a screen protecter, never been a fan of them and my screen is immaculate... so far it is only almost 3 weeks old though

wow just found it, i never noticed it LOL, it's a thick screen protector, sometimes when texting i noticed the phone sometimes missed keys wonder if it was because of the protector.
so can anyone confirm that there phone has been scratched without the OEM protector?
I think that extra thick shield is supposed to act as a "shatter resistant protector" so that if you do happen to smash the glass you don't get shards and splinters everywhere. It is much thicker than any screen protector i've seen before and taking it off will ruin it.
I took my oem one off and now have a deep scratch , not a clue how I did it. If I could go back I would definitely use protection lol. They may not be as pretty as the bare screen but they work.

Yeah. Really lucky. My 4 week old Neo V was just falling once into the ground. It landed with the upper left corner.
RESULT:
Broken Screen, just a real little part in the left upper corner. But. The Touchscreen isn't working anymore...
Did somebody had some problems with dust under the screen?! There were about 2 tiny "things" under it...
As the above posters said, the screen is scratch resistant. In those 4 weeks I've didn't had one.
Sorry for my english skills...
I cant imagine a smartphone without any screen protector. I have been using this one for couple months and it has already saved my screen from scratches (even from some small particles when you have it in your pocket). Its true that the tiny part of shield is irretrievably scratched (even they guarantee its indestructibility), but the display is like new. Thank god!
i would still buy a screen protector just to be sure if i were you,
you can get it really cheap on ebay or maybe other webshops.

Im between a optimus black and a xperia neo.... probably going for the neo... it's cheaper and i liked it a lil bit more than the optimus.....
Got my Neo a screen protector since day one. Been using it for more than a month... Got my protector some scratches... Well I think putting a screen protector is better rather than having none. Got nothing to loose right? just a few bucks (LOL) Im more concerned on getting some scratches on its back cover so I got a silicon case. Drop my phone twice, no dents or whatever...

hmmm.. You said it was scratched? Does it look like a dead pixel or stuck pixel? if it is a stuck pixel, you could search for the web on fixing it. Dark spots are caused by an excess pressure and sadly some of them grows larger just like on TVs, LCD monitors etc.... Its either, you try fixing it, or get your unit replaced.....
Been using a screen protector and a leather case with flip cover from the day I brought phone and it's been 4 months now and not a single scratch in phone

[Q] Not using a case? How is the phone holding up?

I generally don't like using cases on my phones but since I paid so much for my Xperia S I have been using one. I was curious how people who don't use cases on it have had their phone look like. How has the Xperia S survived the day to day normal wear and usage?

Sent from hell using Xperia-S(atan)
I didn't use a case at first but a porch, and I hit a table with the lower left edge of my s (really soft, I didn't even drop it, I just put it down quickly) and it cracked and the paint peeled of. I drew over it with nail polish but I have been using a hard case ever since PLUS a porch.
And I still get a lot of scratches on the housing where the cut outs of my case are (mostly around the USB and headphone plugs, even though I treat my phone really carefully)
I wouldn't recommend using the phone without a case, it scratches way too easy.

Man this phone body is like a tin can
Me myself didn't like a case as well
I usually put my phone in the side pocket alongside with headset and it scratched. Hopefully i have it black so the scratch is not really visible.
And do not ever put your phone in the same pocket with your car keys. In my own experience it can dent your phone pretty bad

I got a white Sony Xperia S a couple of days after the release. Never used any cases, I really hate 'em unless they add functionality.
I dropped my Xperia S only once on tiles, but it wasn't a very high drop. You can only see the scuffs if you look for them. They're really tiny.
Also, the only other scratch I have on my Xperia S is just my fault. I tried putting it in a tin case-like thing I had on a tripod which I had made for a smaller phone, but what I didn't realise was that the edges were very sharp.
My conclusion: Unless you like dropping your phone on the floor or scratch it on purpose with very sharp items, the Xperia S probably won't have any scratches at all. Even in white. The screen too is fine and the Sony (Ericsson) logo on the back isn't scratched either.
I've had mine for 5 months. It once dropped from a very low height facing down, so the screen kinda had a "scatter" from the side (volume up height) and the line goes until the very top of the USB port. It is only seeable at certain angles. There are also tiny scratches, but they are on the screen protector, so.... It once dropped from a slightly higher height than the first, but nothing happened.
"What really matters in this world, anyway?"
I am not surprised that the white one has scratch problems. My buddy had a white HTC Hero with teflon coating and it looked pretty bad after a year or so.
My Xperia s has a thin case so the outside is mint. The screen has really minute scratches that all screens get that you can only see in certain light but no biggy. I never rock a screen protector. I would like to go case free but seeing peoples comments it makes me a bit nervous.

The Xperia S already has a screen protector on it from the factory. Going case free isn't a problem for me at all
I wouldn't remove this protector though. I read somewhere that it could make capacitive button sensitivity less.
I use some cheap pocket-like condom to keep my sola semi-safe.
Back in 2010 when I just bought a brand new HTC Desire I immediately wanted to protect it. I mean PROTECT IT.
I bought the Krusell Orbiflex thingie (was like uberexpensive) and was pretty happy with it until... after few months I realized that the screen was actually scratched by the case itself!
Then I sent over the HTC to the service point (because of broken camera or something). I repeated the procedure 5 times, so they swapped the unit into a new one.
I was happy and stuff and put the new, shiny device into the same case .
After few weeks my brand new HTC was scratched again in the very same spot beacuse of the case. AGAIN.
Maybe a little bit OT but kind of funny story it was .

[Q] How easily does the ASF scratch?

I just got my Z Ultra GPE. I have the incipio dualshine case for it but the included screen protector is not very good and I ended up with a pretty poor application. I ordered a glass protector from Glass-M but it won't be here for a couple weeks. Do you guys think I can get by without a protector without scratches until the glass comes? I only really put it in my pocket. One edge of the protector I have didn't adhere properly and I'm afraid fuzz/dirt will get under and scratch it. Other option is to just use my S4 until I get the better protector.
I've had my Ultra since september and i don't have a single (noticeable) scratch on the front (i'm not using any additional protection). You'll be fine, but accidents happen, so it's not possibble to tell if yours will be scratch free in a few weeks. I do have a couple of scratches on the back though, but i couldn't care less.

@hamdogg mentioned an easy way to apply the protector, use water - added bones is the phone is waterproff
you should be able to remove and reapply the protector.
I've used mine since September with no case or added protection. Like @LordManhattan no scratches or wear at all. Dropped it a couple of times without issue.
Worth adding I dont use a stylus or pencil or anything other than fingers, pretty sure that would degrade the film pretty quick.

I can't see scratches on mine when I am using it. But turn of the screen and swing the phone side to side until the light hits it just right and I see all kinds of fine scratches. How easy is it to scratch? I'd say very easy. And it's not just fine scratches that plague this phone but also the fading of the oleophobic coating. You'll notice the part of the screen where you constantly touch gets rougher compared to the rest of the screen. In the end I'm just waiting for mine to scratch to the point where I will have to remove the ASF.

On mobile....
Ok thank you all for the feedback. I decided to just use it. If it's something that will scratch in 2 weeks of light use and no accidents I'd just assume return it.

Really not sure what to think
I really dont know what to think of it i wanted to buy the z ultra (the normal one..not google play edition because i cant get it in germany)
and the only thing that holds me back is..i can live with a not so well camery..i only take a few photos but i wouldnt be able to live with a device that just takes every single little fingerprint and scratches easily some people say it scratches easily ..some dont i wouldnt use anything else then my fingers to operate it..and carry it safely in my handbag
is it acceptable or really that bad? else i will probably go with a note 3 or a nexus 5 + nexus 7..so i have a small device on the go and a nexus 7 for watching streams/videos at home
I've got some scratches in the middle of my screen from one mistake placement in the same pocket as my keys. Surprised since the screen is supposed to be fairly resilient, I'll be looking into a protector shortly.
that kinda scares me x.x even if i would never put the device next to my keys..it will be most likely in that power cas einside my handbag x.x

You didn't scratch the screen. You scratched the anti shatter film. It's still annoying though, so yeah, you should probably get a second protector, or just remove the ASF and go naked (it's glass after all, so it won't actually scratch unless you're really unlucky) or put the new third party protector on the glass. One protector is bad enough (how it feels to touch), so i can't imagine using two

Tiny bit of the anti-shatter screen protector burning off?

As you can see from the picture, there's a little spot on the phone. It appeared there about 2months ago and never went away/got any bigger so I concluded it's part of the anti shatter film deteriorated? I was in HK when this happened!
Has this happened to anyone else?

Can you not provide a clearer picture? It is far too blurry.
Should you still have valid warranty I'm sure Sony won't mind replacing the screen protector.

Sorry i think what's app compressed the image so it's not that good (i used another person's phone to take the pic then send it to me through what's app). But i will try get a better picture later
But it's not that big of a deal for me, it's definitely not a situation where i want to get a new phone, I'm just curious as to if it happened to other people or not.

Yep happened to many. its the anti-finger print coating. It comes off very quickly.
Everyone that had this happen to now puts a screen protect on it. It will get worse... so bad that you'll send it back.

Though I understand why Sony uses an anti shatter film I cannot understand why they made them so soft? Within 24 hours of indoor use on my XZ I could see minute scratches.
I Ordered the same time I ordered the Ultra some screen protectors but they have not arrived yet. That bloomin shatter proof film has been a real pain in the butt for so many owners. Removing it voids the warranty here. Two plastic protective covers certainly causes picture deterioration. No way in hell would I use a pencil on the standard soft anti shatter film though.
Sony tend to get so close to producing near perfect devices then nearly always drop the ball on some silly trivia. Very odd company?
Ryland
I actually read last week that Sony is required by Japanese law to use anti-shatter films on their handheld devices so people don't get hurt when they shatter. I'm not sure if this is indeed true, but i read it twice last week (can't remember where i read it though, but it was on tech site).
I've had my ultra several months now and as of now, the screen protector is just as it was from day one. Lucky me!
It is, however, a fingerprint magnet!

Maybe this one..
About the shatter proof film, it is Japanese legislation, they put it because it is required. They dont have to do that for phones sold outside Japan but they chose to do it anyway (maybe because they dont like lawsuits from people who got their pockets full of tiny pieces of razor sharp glass) with few exceptions (like the international model of Z Ultra, the film would kinda ruin the use of pencils as stylus)

I removed the screen protector on mine a while back, and its much better. The touchscreen works better, the feel of glass is nicer and its far more scratch resistant. The only downside is that without a proper oleophobic coating I need to apply rain-x every couple of weeks or the screen picks up smudges. :good:

I got a highly annoying scratch in the middle of the screen on the factory protector after just three days that was very visible when the screen was on. I never put protectors on my phones and I never get scratches after months of use.
So I removed the protector and go naked from now on as I always do.
Supposedly Sony replace for new anti shatter protector after each repair is that correct? As I asked for mine to be changed and Ok they said yes. So if that's the case why did people remove the anti shatter film and just void their warranty instead of getting Sony to change it. Plus I had problems with my Usb port and Usb cover so sending it off tomorrow

some people prefer the feel of the glass. also, its a HUGE fingerprint magnet (more than any pure glass ive ever used).
im in the middle of removing mine right now. its incredibly tedious and annoying, but itll be worth it once i get my glass-m on it!
:good:
Or put the glass m over the top and not void warranty. It may be a finger print magnet I no that. But I'd rather wipe it and carry on instead of spending about a scary tedious 2-3 hours taking it off voiding warranty just for some finger prints. Just my opinion but still. I gotta send mine off hopefully tomorrow though. I hope they fix my problems without charging me etc.

Just finished. Took a little under an hour. I had some scratches on the screen, so I didn't wanna spend $40 on a screen protector to place over the scratches. Also, I've read about screen distortion and reduced sensitivity when placing a protector over the stock ASP. I know not everyone experiences it, but with my luck, I would... Lol. I hope you get yours taken care of fast and at no charge, mate.

Something tells me that most people are not interested in saying "bye bye" to their ZU for 1-8 weeks every time they get a scratch
