Does anyone know any Android music players that stream from FTP/HTTP(S)? The only ones I know are Dice Player and ES File Explorer. The former has no playlist capabilities whatsoever, while the latter's playback capabilities are fairly restricted and clunky.
I think bsplayer can too.

Discovered one more that does ftp streaming, though as far as I can tell, it doesn't have much in the way of playlist capabilities: VLC for Android.
One more that does FTP streaming, and also has some playlist capabilities (not much though).

Not really: Coconut does not do stream playback/streaming, but just downloads the track(s) and then starts playback. Nice try though

I just found this thread so I thought I would resurrect it to see if the OP has found a solution?
My situation is I have an FTP server set up and I want to stream music to my S4. I have tested many players and the best I have found so far is MX Player as it has some buffering capabilities.
Trouble is that as MS Player has no inbuilt FTP support I have to open the file(s) using ES File explorer. Opening one file works a treat as you have the 'open as' option. But if you select multiple files you lose the open as option and ES File explorer defaults to using it's own media player which is some what lacking and has no inbuilt buffering capabilities. So when streaming in areas with poor reception the playback is jerky.
I tried using a playlist to get round this problem but MX player doesn't support them, anyway I am not sure that a playlist would work over FTP.
Player I have tried (that I can remember) are:
VLC - Works but no buffering (shame my favoured windows player)
ES Media player - can open multiple files in ES File explorer however no buffering.
Google media player - Same as VLC
XMBC Gotham nightly build - Couldn't find the FTP functions described in this post
FTP Media Player - disappointing and the title was so promising.
Also tried quite a few others all with the problem that you had to play through ES File Explorer and no buffering.
In short I am looking for a player that supports FTP and has buffering.
OR
A way to get ES File explorer to send multiple files to MX Player.

The solution I have found is to simply drop my quest for FTP streaming, and switch to HTTP(S) streaming. Better chances of finding a client-server pair. Currently using ServeStream for a client, and ServersUltimate for server. The latter is well worth the money, and then some.

Dig a li'l deeper, and you'll find it. My issue was that it's too big and clunky. I need something much leaner, don't care much about all its myriad other features.

I already have a HTTPS setup as well. I am running Windows server 2008 R2 and have used the inbuilt server functions in that.
But while ok (only OK though not amazing) for windows to windows, it's no good for Android as it uses Silverlight to play the file, I was hoping something would come from the Moonlight devs but that seems to have died a death now MS are planning to ditch Silverlight in favour of HTML 5.
I will defiantly check out ServersUltimate.
I really setup my FTP server as a bit of an exercise to start with, and then got round to thinking it would be cool to stream my music collection on the move.
No it would seem that VLC still doesn't have playlist capabilities. In fact I didn't have any luck with M3U playlists at all. But I am thinking this maybe due to trying them from a remote location? I may give one a go from a local location just to test this out.
AS for the Google app yes I was talking about Play music, the standard player that gets shipped with the phone.
I too thought XMBC was a bit to much and ended up uninstalling it after my initial look around seemed fruitless.
Looks like I will be looking into HTTPS alternatives. Shame it felt so close as I actually had something working.

I've had a good experience with subsonic (subsonic dot org ) even though it's on the resource heavy end for my liking. It works better than any of the other alternatives I've tried.

A year passed, and yet.
Neutron player didn't work for me either, it never able to find any files/directory in FTP.

I want to stream AVI files from my computer to my Nook. GMote doesn't work with AVI. I downloaded VLC Stream and Convert. I fired it up, pointed it at my desktop and it just worked. I was very impressed with it except that it streams all my videos in 4" X 4". I'm sure this would be great on a phone, but I've got 7" to work with here.
Does anyone know of an app that will reliably stream media in full screen? I'm willing to pay for an app that does this. I just need to stream over wifi when I'm at home.
I use CifsManager to mount windows shares, and then RockPlayer Lite to play videos off those shares. It will stretch to full screen, but unless you format the video correctly it's stuck with software decoding.
GMote plays AVI for me, do you have rockplayer?
No Rockplayer. I don't want to have to mount shares. It's an extra step. VLC Stream and Convert works perfectly except it's small screen. I open the app, click on browse, browse to the file I want to play and click play. It buffers and plays with no issues except for the screen size.
There's no extra steps, you browse to the avi you want to play in gmote, click it and rockplayer opens it.
I tested out the GMote Rockplayer combo you all suggested. It worked very well, except I can't seem to fast forward and skip around inside of videos. Is this something I"m doing wrong or is it a limitation of this solution?

I think it may be a limitation. If there's a fix, I don't know it. Rockplayer by itself allows skipping around but youve got it streaming the video through GMote and I doubt that Rockplayer is communicating to GMote.
I got this to work with VLC Stream and Convert. There are options buried in the menu to make the output full screen. I love it. I have to start VLC on my computer ahead of time which is kind of a pain, but I'm at home anyway when I'm doing this. Once I do though, I can stream any of my media and also fast forward, rewind and skip around in it whether in portrait or landscape. Highly recommend this.
I was hoping to provide a solution using orb or Androrb, but I tried with mplayer, rockplayer, and stock player with no luck.
Gmote/rockplayer works for me, but no ff as mentioned. If the v player dev could support the nc it may have potential.
To the above poster, you could use teamviewer to log in to your pc and start the vlc stream.

I suspect that Gmote/Rockplayer doesn't have FF because it's not accessing the stream directly. Gmote is accessing the stream and forwarding it to Rockplayer. I'm in my house when I'm using my NC and I have a VLC shortcut on my toolbar so it doesn't take but a second to start it. I could probably configure VLC to start the web interface part automatically when Windows starts, but I'm too lazy to look into that right now.

In the Icon properties, add this to the target line:
--extraintf http --intf wx
And then move the icon into your startup folder !

VLC convert and stream allows this, yes.
vlc stream and convert works fine, you just have to mess with the settings, make sure video playback width is set to 1040 or screen width
When I try to use S&C on my Nook (CM7), it tells me "buffering" for about a minute, then tells me it can't play, too many errors. Installed it on my Inspire HD and it works great. Any ideas, anyone?

Do you have it set to h.264 in the streaming settings? I'm not sure how well the other settings work (if at all).

I tried the same thing, works great in rooted Eclair but not in any of the CM7 versions. I think it is because there is no DSP working in CM7, but I could be wrong.
Thanks to a tweet from Kmob, I just found out about SubSonic.
Its an open source media server that runs on windows/linux/mac and creates a very clean web interface for accessing all your media you have stored on your home network.
I have a windows box that I use as my media storage server. I installed subsonic in about a minute, configured it in under 3 (including setting up the paths to my specific media folders, and opening a port on my router)
They have an android app, installed it on my new atrix... setup the app to point to my router's dyndns address with the specific port I setup and BAM, done.
you select the media item you want to play via the very clean app interface, then it opens in a browser window showing a flash player. Make the player full screen and you are set.
From start to finish, I was watching House in less than 7 minutes.

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt DLNA for getting media stored on your phone to display on your tv? This lets you play media stored on your pc on your phone... On wifi or even 3g

Orb seemed to work ok as long as you dont have a large library. Plex didn't see alot of my files because they didn't meet its naming convention. Plex also had no easy way to set up security.
I miss Airvideo. It was and has been my only regret about leaving the Iphone.

I am trying to use DLNA via a Windows 7 pc. Video shows up fantastic, but no audio, I hope I don't have to transcode the audio, some of them are AC3 and DTS.
Can Subsonic handle that?

Yes, you can create multiple users, it even supports Ldap (windows domain user credentials)
I think it even supports ssl, but im not 100% sure on that.

Apologies, I just briefly checked your other posts and came to the wrong conclusion. I've actually picked this up based on this thread and I'm enjoying it. I had the same issue with video but no audio, and it handles it great. Thanks for the heads up.
p.s. my mom would like to know when you're calling her back.
So I tried this and over all am happy with it.
I have been tweaking the settings to get things working well over 3g.
My friend on sprint 4G seems to have better results than me.

Actually, atrix can be acted as DLNA client which can play media stored in DLNA server. I use PS3 Media server on my mini mac to streaming avi files to my PS3 and Atrix. Only problem is I cannot watch some of avi files because of compatibility issue with codec - Atrix will say "not supported media type" sometimes.

Correction noted, thank you.
Subsonic can install on a mac, and takes very little ram, so there probably wouldn't be much harm in running both (PS3 MS and subsonic) on your mac mini.
The real time transcoding SS does should eliminate any chance of codec compatibility issues.
I can vouch for SubSonic.. been using it for the past month, streams videos FLAWLESSLY. Way better then AirVideo for the iPhone, and a cinch to set up. In order to use the domain from another PC you have to donate, but it works for free streaming to the Android..... love this app so far.
Now if only Android can get the new version of iMobsters that was pulled from the appstore, and NHL 2K11, only then I can finally sell my iPhone 3GS.
Is this the same as Using the Open Source VLC Player to stream over http or rtsp? I'm using this now, and it works awesome...it converts and streams every file type VLC can play...with no buffering time over Wifi...and bearable buffering over 4G. But, here's the catch for me. You have to have VLC running all the time on PC side, with web interface enabled. So it it's not, I have to log in, remote control computer open VLC.
Is this way an application, or just a process running in the background on PC side? I'm sure I got some of the terminology confused a bit, as I'm not an expert...hopefully it's understandable though.

I just purchased KalemSoft Media Player from the App Catalog, the price a little high but it plays many more formats than the stock webos player. I am happy because it's playing my divx movies so it was worth the cost for me.

for some reason the kalem video player in preware is messed up, you can get a good copy by going to the kalemsoft website and downloading it from there, preware should install it when you try to open it.

Unable to install Kalem media player either. I was able to download it onto my touchpad but says 'Cannot open MIME type'.
Was one of the many that got it on sale and still pretty new to it. How do I get around this and get it on?

When you install it, you have to make you are on 3.0.2. Also, your best bet, install Internalz Pro then install TouchPlayer, after they are installed reboot the device 2 times [for good measure]. They should install all dependencies that you will need.

I cant tell you a way to do it via SMB, but even if I could then you would need to start worrying about compatible codecs.
I would instead suggest Kalemsoft media player. It is seven bucks in the market or Free for the older version on their website.
If you download the server app, setup a DDNS account and forward the default kalem server ports you can stream your home moves to anywhere you have internet access.
If all you care about is streaming while at home, then I would use UPNP...

When you use Kalem, you're video isn't lagging at all?? I tried using Kalem and TouchPlayer. Honestly Kalem is better by far because at least it plays my video.... but otherwise, are those the only two video players out there ?
Hey there all, I've been working with Android relatively well for the last six or so months and have been utterly shocked by the complete lack of mediaplayer software that will play streaming radio. I have two .m3u files and one .pls that I've tried in the stock player, Meridian, Astro mp, WinAmp Mobile, StreamFurious pro, and RadioHeart, but none of them will play it. Has anyone seen a media player or even a standalone program for Android that will play streaming radio files?

VLC Beta (April 23rd Build), but I can't get it to work with playlists yet so you have to resort to copying and pasting the stream source URL from within the playlist file. The format support is good pretty much any stream URL that works in desktop VLC will work mobile. Once they add playlist support and some other features from the desktop edition we may finally have a suitable Android replacement for TCPMP. I'm keeping my hopes up as this is an early unofficial build, and I've used VLC for years on my desktop. Its a very good media player and VLC will be doing an official Android version someday as they have a link placeholder on their website.
Its hard to believe that TCPMP was abandoned 5+ years ago yet it still beats anything offered on Android as of now. Sure there are programs out there like TuneIn and iHeartRadio that play radio stations, but if you want something that takes a custom stream or streaming playlists your options are limited. Looking forward to VLC official builds they may be the answer.

Good call; I gave that a shot and found that I couldn't play the playlist files themselves, but opening them in a text editor and grabbing the URL did the trick for all but one of my radio stations, an ASX playlist (which I actually haven't used in a while, so this doesn't necissarily mean that ASX is out of the question as the stream could've changed).
I did find that to switch between streams would cause an FC, but it would be fine once it started up again. Hopefully they get this working even better, but until then, I still have to ask, is this the only thing on Android right now that can play streaming radio?

Well like I said VLC is in an early beta, I believe its actually an unofficial build compiled from the source. The desktop VLC has great playlist support, xspf, m3u, asx, etc all work and I imagine playlist support will be added.
What I did as a temporary solution was to make a HTML file of my streams as links. Then I copied the file to my phone and bookmarked it in Dolphin HD. So now I can browse to the page, tap and hold a link, select copy URL and paste into VLC.

The issue seems to be that it tries to add the additional stream to a playlist much like desktop VLC, but since playlists aren't working yet something is going haywire and FCs it. We'll just have to wait for more updates and hopefully an official build from VideoLAN even if its still a beta. Winamp Pro can also do streaming, but is limited to MP3 and AAC streams (I can't get WMA working), under the shoutcast section you can add custom streams and save them as favorites. Its not free, and VLC will probably have better streaming support when its done.
I use the standard "boxed" streamers like Tunein, Slacker, Jango and Sky.fm so the platform will work with radio. Besides what has already been said there are apps out there that say they will do it : M3U Player, KamMa's folder player, ServeStream. Another question is, have you checked the files on a none Android platform?

Winamp Pro can also do streaming, but is limited to MP3 and AAC streams (I can't get WMA working), under the shoutcast section you can add custom streams and save them as favorites. Its not free, and VLC will probably have better streaming support when its done.

At least we're somewhere, even if the process is tedious. It's amazing to me how there is absolutely NO software in however many years we've had Android (the only smart platform left on the market) that there is no better way to stream radio; hopefully the newer releases of VLC will finally implement this. Gave WinAmp a try too, and no dice with that either. Hopefully somebody will get this figured out.
I mean, if the Epic users are banned from the privilege of listening to FM radio, you'd think we could at least stream something. Guess the whole radio thing wasn't meant to be (short of pasting the URLs into VLC Alpha) - maybe Samsung wins this one.

Gave "M3U Player", "Kamama's", and "ServeStream" a try this afternoon, and they don't seem to be able to play any streaming radio, M3U or otherwise from my playlist files (one of them might have had the tedious "pasted URL" option that VLC mobile had, but nothing we haven't covered so far).

Jogjastreamers
I use Jogjastreamers, it's a standalone radio streamers with limited channel - only radio Channel in Jogjakarta (Indonesia) and surrounding cities as the name suggests.
maybe not the one you are looking for, but it's a radio streamer app and it works

I'm just looking for a simple program that will let me click on one of the radio stations that I've got saved and play it. Just that simple. I can't believe Android has been going this long and still doesn't have anything like this.

what about "A Online Radio?"

I don't think I have it installed right now, but I do remember trying it and it unfortunately not working.

VLC, but we are going to have to be patient. Hopefully it will have playlist support soon it already plays all my streams fine if I copy the raw stream URL into it. On my desktop I've made playlists of all my favorite radio streams that I play in VLC. Its a lot easier than opening my browser and opening some bloated player. On Android I have some streams in Tunein, some in iHeartRadio and some streams that don't have an Android app at all.
When I first made the switch to Android I was also surprised there was nothing out there that compared to TCPMP. Even WMP which was pretty basic on Windows Mobile opened playlists. VLC has the potential as long as they don't strip too many features but porting open source always takes time and I appreciate the efforts of the developers.

I keep checking the VLC website to see if they will have any info on any official builds, but nothing has appeared yet:

There are also the unofficial builds here that are being updated every few weeks or so.

You're not alone, guy! i'm searching a simple radio streaming app, too. An app where you just write the name and url of the radio that you want to listen. An app with only a play/pause button without advertising and 10000 radio pre-installed. An app like radiotray on linux.

In that case, you're in the right "waiting room". Right now, the closest thing we have to a solution is using one of the prerelease "XDABrewed" (I just made that one up) versions of VLC. Instead of simply opening a playlist file with the app though, you've gotta first open the playlist file with a text editor, copy the stream URL out, then paste it into VLC and it'll play. Also, if you decide to listen to a different stream, you have to fully exit VLC and start it again. This might seem like a lot of effort, but it is an early "alpha" sector build and there hasn't even been an official release of any kind yet.

Hi all, I've been scowering the depths of Android music players trying to find an app that will simply let me browse SMB shares, sort according to ID3 track number tags, and play/queue music files.
The only app I could find that could come close is Xenoamp Beta, but it's buggy and often crashes when I point it at SMB shares with thousands of songs.
Otherwise I've come up with nothing.
Popular Music Players like Power Amp and Rocket Player etc, won't allow me to add SMB folders to their libraries.
I've heard of solutions to mount smb shares into the "sd card", but such actions require root, which I don't want to do.
Popular Media Players like BSPlayer can browse SMB shares perfectly, but it won't parse ID3 tags and allow me to play according to track number.
Excellent File Managers like ESmanager will browse SMB shares with ease, but also won't recognize track number tags.
Is there an app out there that will work? I figured this would be a common requested feature, but I can't find much discussion on the topic.

No problem, it sometimes disconnects, but it does work, I can't believe there's no other options...Everyone keeps asking PowerAmp to add the feature but nothing....
