Dear Members,
Can someone tell me / give me the reference to root my Samsung S2 I777 running on 4.1.2?
Basebadnversion -I777UCMD8
Note- I just want to get the root access only & don't want to flush anything
Thanks,

Android_lil,
I had great success using the ExynosAbuse. Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35512626
It is pretty much as simple as installing the APK. I think I stayed on the stock 4.1.2 for about a day before I started flashing other ROMs, but I didn't notice any problems...
Have fun!

Check out the thread that was made for the new stock release. Apparently you can root with something called Framaroot. I've never used it but someone in that thread confirmed that it worked for them.

I am pretty sure they patched this exploit with the 4.0.4 udate. I don't think you will have any luck with ExynosAbuse. You will have to use more traditional methods. Start with the stickies in the q&a section of this forum.

I used Framaroot. Just download the .apk file, install it, run the app, and choose the "Aragorn" exploit. It will run, then tell you that you need to restart. Very easy.

Now that you mention it, I was at 4.04, not 4.1.2. According to my notes XynosAbuse was successful for me. Regardless, it still means my experience doesn't help the OP, since it was the wrong version anyway.
Thanks!
---------- Post added at 02:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:40 PM ----------
I read through more of the XynosAbuse thread and confirmed. Yes it works on 4.04, the patch was in 4.1.2. So, to the OP: XynosAbuse will not work for you. Sorry to mis-lead. Glad I could at least clarify what _won't_ work...

Framaroot worked for me using Aragorn exploit on newest stock 4.1.2 release via kies.

I have spent the last 3 hours trying to educate myself on all this stuff. I have an AT&T I777 running the 4.1.2 that AT&T released recently. It runs fine but I've read so much of the advantages of rooting and custom roms that I figured I'd give it a try. This couldn't have been easier! I understand that the way to understand if the root was successful, I should have the "Superuser" app which I do! The whole process took maybe 5 minutes! Thank you for posting this!

Well yes super user will be installed but that's just an app used to allow apps superuser access. That isn't what roots the phone or anything. You could have root access without having that app installed, it just would be far less secure because you need some way to regulate what apps can do what.

I haven't heard of any other way of rooting. Framaroot has worked for almost everyone though. AJ Newkirk has recently posted a kernel with no swap that will work with stock 4.1.2. See the OP of the AJK kernel and use the third one.

No opinion, as I haven't used either one of them. But they are both based on Siyah, so my guess is yes.

How to flash aj kernel in stock jb or how to install cwm in stock jb. Where to find tar kernel for stock jb as i suppose all jb kernels are in cwm flash format.

I doubt you'll find one. You could make it yourself. You need Linux, or cigwin, or it can actually be done on your phone if it's rooted and has busybox and terminal emulator.

I'm back around after trying out the dark side for the last few months. I got my real estate license, and had been using....an iphone....lol. I had to try it. And ya know, its not all THAT terrible. But there are NO customization options, and it gets really boring. So after denying my inner nerd for the last few months, I decided to just be myself again and come back to what I love. I missed it around here. =D

Custom kernel, or flashing vlara's prerooted system image from the UCKK6 leak thread.
It's just like the days before zergRush - get used to custom kernels and rooted system images being the only way to root.

Have you tried this? vlara's download does not contain a tar. It is named system.img, and I tared it and tried to flash it, and the flash fails immediately, just like the UCKK6 system dump I made myself, so I would guess that his dump has not been prepared to flash.
If I have time this morning I'll make Odin flashable 2.3.6 with root

To test some of the problem reports I needed to run it. Of course, this is bad for some because I've established that the bluetooth HID problems are not the kernel - or if it is, the stock KK6 kernel is just as broken so there's no easy way to figure out how to fix.
Uploading it is going to be a *****, as it always is. I'm not doing it until the family is asleep.

All it does is install a custom kernel - that particular one (zedo's) will probably break wifi.
If it does - flash the 12/21 version of my kernel and wifi will work.

Should I root my brand new SGP 4.0?

Hi all,
I ordered a SGP 4.0 and will receive it today. Should I root it as soon as I receive it? Does 'rooting' make any changes to the stock firmware? Does it change anything else compare to a stock SGP beside that it will have 'root' permission?
I am new to the Android environment as I have never owned one before, but I am an embedded software guy by trade (on a totally different discipline and processor family) so I'm not a stranger in the firmware world and Linux environment.
Later, I like to learn programming/hacking the Android for fun and hope that I will be able to contribute something.
Thanks for any comment.
-mike-
No, all it does is just give you root access.
Not really, unless you want to use Titanium Backup. Mine is rooted (I think, can't remember lol) and I really don't see any other advantages except for overclock apps or other root-only apps.
Overall, it's not necessary. Just flash a ROM (I prefer CM7 or Klin's Klassic ROM) and a kernel (NOTE: Steve's kernel for the US and INTL 4.0 may cause bootloops if you boot into ClockWorkMod Recovery).
Thanks! I appreciate the replies. So, if I want to root, I just grab the latest version of Superoneclick and have at it?
If I were you I would wait a little longer and get some more information about this, beofre rooting. I rooted my Player using Superuser, just the latest one I could find.

Hey, I'm a huge novice at all of this. I've had my player for a few months and I've heard of tons of people that have rooted their device.
What does it allow you to do? Is it how you get more themes?
I'm very unintelligent on this subject so any clarification would be great...

Jeez, I am confused.

I just got the Note today, and I have the GSIII. I am testing them both out. I was told rooting the Note and installing recovery was super easy but there are like 15 guides and I don't know how to root this thing.
I need a guide, and then maybe some suggestions to good ROM's once I actually figure out how to root.
Any help is appreciated.

Honestly I just suggest flashing an ICS custom ROM. Easier than kies, and better anyways.
If you want to try out the "stock ICS" feel, look no further than here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1664980
that will still have smemo and all the stock widgets and launcher. It's just de-bloated, deodexed, and rooted. It's pretty much like stock on steroids.
If you don't care about the stock feel or the spen or touchwiz stuff, try anything else out there. Lots of good ROMs, all better than stock through kies.
I'm currently running rasroygbiv's Gubment Cheeze, a CM9 based ROM, and it's awesome. Haven't had an ounce of lag, and I've been testing it for quite a while now, before it was released here. Highly recommended that you at least try it if you like the whole CM9 thing.
And for your gs3, look for Nunhugger's Triune, it's a stockish debloated rooted ROM and he's doing some sweet things theming stock touchwiz.

[Q] Rooting SGH-i777 that has stock ICS installed

Alright, I'm a noob...(loved the intro video!) and I've spent an hour or so searching for rooting info for my device. Did find a good thread that was over a year old about rooting SGH-i777 with older android versions, but was afraid to follow THOSE directions since mine has newer version (Android 4.0.4). And I find other threads about rooting other versions of GS2...not the AT&T.
So far I've learned NOT to use ROM Manager, and not to look to Galaxy2Root for help...so I guess there's that. I don't want to be stupid here, but can someone direct me to a thread with Rooting instructions for my phone with ICS already on it, and recommended ROMs. I'd like to have more control over my phone and take advantage of JB releases that seem to be out with good reliability. I'm used to doing this sort of thing on computers, but not with Android. Had my phone for about 15 mos....my first Android.
Suggestions?
TIA...

This is so far easiest thing to do, however be careful, DO NOT, DO NOT,
choose the "one click" patch option which come first, as that will patch
the system and you will NOT be able to root again. and there is NO way
to un-patch. I was not being careful and now trapped.

Appreciate the suggesting. Been researching ExynosAbuse, and looks like it could cause camera not to work, and in the compatibility list, though the Galaxy Sii 9100 is listed, the SGH-i777 is not...seems like a concern to me.

It works trust me. Also you're going to flash a rom right after so you should be fine

I am also a noob when it comes to anything mobile. I got my GS2 last year (first android as well), and I've since updated to 4.0.4. I have also done some research on rooting(after my fiance keeps bugging me about "fixing" our gs2s due to them always turning off) but I was uncertain on what rom to use. I have no experience with phones, and I don't want to do something stupid and break our phones. I know that I am supposed to " use exynos abuse", but that's pretty much all I know/can find without reading every page on the 80 page threads. Are there any suggestions on a stable(ish) rom for us both to use/how easy is it to "use exynos abuse"? (without doing what tyhust did) We are fine with our ICS and I wont venture into the world of Jellybean yet... (maybe once I acquire some more experience)
Thanks in advance, and for the site in general, there is a TON of information on here...

I'm also a noob... so if I want to down grade to 4.0.3 rooted from 4.0.4 stock, should I use ucle5_stock_rooted.tar with Odin?
Is is necessary to wipe since both are ICS?
Thanks!

Yes, that should be the tar you use. Make sure it's from this thread. You should be okay without wiping, but if you have problems, I'd suggest flashing 2.3.4 and wiping from recovery once on 2.3.4; reason being, stock ICS kernel may brick your phone if you wipe with it (see linked thread for details on this eMMC superbrick bug).
OP, if you're uncertain about ExynosAbuse, try this method instead. I know it works, I used it myself very recently, albeit I was already on 4.0.3 and had not upgraded.

This is a good thread.
I had the same issues with 4.0.4 and i found it was a live wallpaper app (water drops) causing my random "power off". Since switching to a different live wall paper, i have had NO random "shut downs".
I still want to root my S2 and this is the best thread i have found that addresses the stock 4.0.4
good luck.
Well, after a week of no shut downs, my phone just shut off. So i guess the live wallpaper was not the issue.
Back to the drawing board
Not to hijack the thread or anything but I'm new to this phone too. I understand the rooting process on ICS what I don't understand is installing a custom recovery and kernel. Why do you have to use a gingerbread kernel and why can you not just use stock? I've always just rooted, installed custom recovery and flashed roms on Verizon phones so installing a custom kernel to achieve custom recovery is foreign to me. I've been reading the stickies but I don't understand this....is it only to avoid the flash counter being tripped? Is there a easier way to install the recovery or am I making this harder than it needs to be? Thanks for any help!

Our phone has recovery baked into the kernel. For what reason I don't know but I'm sure its a good one as just flashing recovery is IMO easier.
Thanks. Last question. After installing a gingerbread kernel and the baked in recovery do I need to install a new kernel to flash a jb or ics rom. Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks for your help.

Well since every ROM comes with a kernel in it (obviously or it couldn't run) then you just answered your own question bro. Flash away.

Need more help.... There's so much information since this phone came out its overwhelming and it seems most of it was written for gingerbread. I have the phone rooted, mobile Odin lite installed and I'm confused on which kernel I need to flash. Phone is stock rooted lk3 4.0.4. Thank you!

If you're just trying to get into recovery to flash something then any kernel will do. Since the system won't need to boot up with that kernel installed you're just flashing one to enter recovery.

So I want to install a gb kernel and recovery only so I can flash a custom rom that comes with kernel and recovery, correct? So before flashing the gb kernel in mobile Odin I should have a rom already downloaded on the sd card so I can immediately flash that? I'm sorry for all the questions this is drastically different from what I'm used to.

Download whatever ROM you want on your phone . Flash a kernel. Reboot into recovery. Profit.

Update available on Verizon Software Update Assistant. Possibly KitKat

Verizon Software Update Assistant on Mac just popped up and started downloading an update. It doesn't say what version but I'm assuming it's KitKat. My internet is only 1mb down right now so it will be awhile before it's finished.

I just updated through Kies. KitKat ftw! Totally unexpected.
Downloading through kies now. Haven't used this before might start using to do a local backup
Pulled it from the software upgrade assistant as well. When I did a manual check on the phone it said was up to date.

Hope you all know there's probly no chance to roll back, better hope safestrap works. Its always best to let devs tear through the update before updating.

This is excellent advise!!!! This is why I will stick with NC2 for awhile.....
If someone can send me aboot, sbl1, rpm, and tz, I will tell you if we can downgrade. It looks like this is NC4.
somebody snag the nc4 modem

im downloading tar now wioll get u files shortly
ps- why are all u guys updating :/ the chances of ever getting root again on this rom are slim to none unless the bootloader isnt incremented which ishighly unlikely.. look at the s5 13k bounty for just root and its still not out yet..
let me tear through this and provide a safe way to update and keep root
dont take the update.. i will provide a safe way to update and keep root and a way to be able to revert to the old kernel with the insecure modules for when kexec starts working if it cooperates..

Yeah I wasn't going to try, I run ARLiberator and I didnt pay $30 for nothing. Seriously considering the highly advocated leak though now that I have actually taken the time to read through the PSA and thread comments.
I'm kind of a noob though, I don't understand a lot of the intricacies of programming. Am I correct in assuming that if they are able to build a custom kernel with this unprotected firmware, it will be possible to install non TW roms Like CM11 one day?

if the kexec module is perfected it will allow us to 2nd boot a aosp kernel and in turn run aosp roms like cm11,aokp,gummy etc. this is a hard task but having the opportunity to use it is a very good thing
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the general forums for the Verizon Note 3? Some might just like being informed about the stock update in a thread without it being bombarded with beans rom posts. We do have the posts about this already I believe.
