Yep! There is no contract though.... you can cancel your plan anytime, but then you will be responsible for the remaining amount you own on your device.
Take care!

Yup. I think T-Mobile's no contract thing is overblown and exaggerated. You're saving money purely because their $50 unlimited plan is cheaper. Otherwise, everything else is still the same as say AT&T. I mean if you leave T-Mobile, you pay the remaining balance on the phone, which is practically the ETF fee if you were to leave AT&T. Your saving really comes from when you already own a phone and can sign up to T-Mobile w/o being forced to pay $30 extra for using a smartphone.

T-Mobiles new system is great if you have an old phone or dont mind paying 600 bucks out your pocket but at the same thing I dont see the savings if you buy a phone from them
say you get the iPhone, $199 plus $20 a month for 24 months, thats $680 bucks and on top of this, there is a mandatory $11 a month for insurance which you can only remove once you paid the phone off. So that iPhone just ended up costing you 944 bucks

Not really.. if you've actually looked at AT&T's prices to add on more data, its pretty ridiculous compared to 20 bucks for t-mobiles unlimited data

The really big savings comes when you have more than one phone. $30 for second phone and $10 each phone after. And you can add extra data just to the phones that need it.

Is the mandatory insurance just for the iPhone? I have my note 2 financed and I don't have insurance.

That's what I said. The savings come from T-Mobile's $50 plan being cheaper. The whole no contract savings thing is not really a savings. The ETF you pay from any other carriers is the same thing as you having to pay off the remaining balance on the equipment if you cancel.

I have not heard of mandatory insurance. That makes no sense. It's not like you're leasing the phone.

Not mandatory at all, my wife got the s4 and paid $400 down..they told her she had to keep the insurance only for the first month and only pays like $8 or $10 at month for the phone, not sure which one because I would to look at the bill but is one of those 2 numbers

I disagree with you on that. Think about this, in T-Mobile after you decide to go a head and pay off the phone your phone bill goes down $20. In the rest of the carriers even after your 2 year contract have you ever seen you bill gone down? You will pay that phone 5 times for all that matters without them never telling you "your done".
I believe that T-Mobile has done something fair this time around. Paying your equipment independently from the plan enables them to offer better plans and more affordable prices because they are no longer in risk of chargeback's from contracts gone wrong.

Tomato, tomatoes dude. It all boils down to T-Mobile's plan being cheaper as the reason why you're saving money.

Anyone buy this outright on installment plan?

I bought my Vibrant about a year ago with the $25/month using the credit I had with them...Do they still do that? Because lately I keep seeing that you have to put like 300 down plus the payment. I only paid like 79 to cover the tax on the price of the phone and first months payment....
Anyone do it this way? Or have things changed?
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
Yea I got mine on the installment plan but you have to have one of their newer plans.
So u extended contract?...im talking about buying at full price no contract ext and keep my 69/mo unlimited talk text web
Sent from my T959 using XDA App
I did the Value Plan, but you have to pay the downpayment of $260 and then it's $15/mo for 20 mo or something. I don't think they have any plans w/o a downpayment any more.
You can still do a "classic" plan, there is no down payment, or any payments anymore, just the single time subsidized cost of the phone... however, the "classic" plans are more expensive...
That being said, I bought the phone outright, I have a friend that works at a T-Mo retail store, she ordered it with her discount that she gets 2x a year since I fixed her laptop a few months ago. $325 after tax

Yes, you can buy a phone at full cost at any time. No matter what your plan is. It only extends contract if you change anything... like the plan, some features, etc...
I live in Boston and bought the amaze full price and I got the $60 prepaid unlimited Talk text and 2gb of internet. This is worth it trust me. They also got a $50 plan but the only thing is they offer only 100mb. That beast would burn through that in a few days not even.
Everything came up to after tax and the first month you gotta pay upfront too. $658.78
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
Well I was at a store. This is what I was planning to do. I did get a 'value' plan contract so have to pay full price. value plan has $49.99 unlimited everything.
so TMO is willing to finance % free up to $300.00. Then the rest you have to down-payment. So Amaze is $270 and GS2 is $230 down payment. probably taxes are extra so i'd guess taxes on $570 is maybe $40? I did not go through with it so that would probably be $310 charged to my card. What else? $35 phone activation fee?
True and not true... There is an $18 "upgrade fee" (ahemm BULL****) *cough cough* that they have added to anyone that has stayed on the classic plan
Oh and let's not all forget about the $50 migration fee if you DO choose the new "value" plan.
God do I HATE big business/mega corporations.

Sprint changing price for shared plans

Not sure if you guys are happy/unhappy with your Sprint service, but they're hiking up the price for shared lines/business accounts. By them doing this, it voids your contract. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I am personally jumping ship because of my 3G data has become almost useless in my area. There's been a tower outage for going on 6 months now.
Known this for about a month now. This is how I got out of Sprint last month.

Did you see it reported somewhere or do you check your account often for those messages at the bottom? I just noticed this last night! This change basically raises my account balance about $25!
I've been thinking for a while now of jumping ship but im curious what plans you guys found out there that are comparable to sprints data plans? I was looking into verizon and found that I would pay almost $40 bucks higher for some of their plans similar to my sprints unlimited data plans. God, these carriers are getting ridiculous with the plan hikes...

Not sure how much data you use, sounds like a lot, but Verizon is currently doing, instead of 2GB of data for $30, their doing 4GB for $30. I am about to port my numbers to Verizon.
Using Amazon Wireless I can get 3 Galaxy Nexus' and 2 Thunderbolts for a total of $299.99 out the door. And the plan is the exact same that I have with Sprint, 700 shared min., unlimited text, $30 each line for 4GB of data for $279.99/month, just about what I was paying for Sprint's. Of course Verizon isn't unlimited, but I'll gladly take that over their ****ty network in my area.

how are you paying $280 at sprint? 5 lines with 1500 shared and unlimited everything is only $220
as for the op, unless theyre making a second change this shouldnt be a way to get out of your contract. the price remains the same, but instead of $130/$0 for the first two lines it is now $110/$20. for those with nvp discounts that will result in a small loss, but keep in mind nvp is not part of your contract and those rates are subject to change anyway. as always people will complain enough and some will get out of contract, but sprint has no responsibility to let you out.

You're correct about it not being much different, but I've spoken with a retention rep. and they said this change does void my contract. They changed the pricing of the original plan I have and also changed the pricing on Line 2 which was free previously. Reguardless if my account stays the same pricing wise, they can't change the pricing of a plan and/or line without it voiding contract. You just have to notify them within 30 days of said change to be able to opt out of ETF fees.

Nope, they are yours to keep since you are no longer under the contract for the phones. Since they waive the ETFs on your lines, they are yours to use or sell...
I sold my EVO 3D in a heartbeat since prices are quickly falling...lol

I just got off the phone with sprint. Basically there is no price increase for the plan. The family plan is decreasing $20 therefore compensating for the $20 for the second line. The only increase is if you have a discount and it will no longer apply to the 2nd phone. I did confirm with the rep that this does void the contract and we would be able to get out without paying the ETF's. I really don't have much problems with Sprint except the decrease in 3G speeds with the evo 3d. Going to look at prices at Verizon and might witch to the Galaxy Nexus.

You just call Sprint to make sure that your lines have the EFT's off them and are ready to port. I just did this and once the numbers have been ported, your Sprint contract is cancelled from that point.

Not really. People will still need data plans. At most, Google might be snatching the small percentage of people who don't mind paying more for an unlocked device rather than the majority who tend to buy subsidized devices on contract.
Well If you go to a carrier with a phone that is yours outright. They cannot make you sign up for a data plan.
If you brought an unlocked Iphone to Tmobile, they have no reason to charge you for a monthly data plan..
However if you decide to use it with out a plan the price would be costly..
but you can just use Wifi..
that is how I had my Iphone working a few years ago on the tmobile service..
I never had any issues.
You get a cheaper phone through them. how ever they make up the money in the data plan.
So Google did sorta screw the carriers..
Actually the customer gets screwed and the carriers benefit. If you buy a $200 phone, you pay $100 a month for a data plan. It's $100 a month because instead of paying full retail for the phone, you are paying a little bit of it each month via your plan. So roughly $10-$15 of your bill each month is covering the cost of the phone.
The problem with buying an unlocked phone from someone else, is that the carriers don't discount the price of the monthly plan for you. So you still pay $100 a month, but you paid $400 for the device instead of $200. So you've been screwed $200 basically.
Now from the carriers perspective, they love this. Instead of taking $10-15 a month to recoup what they lost on the phone, they charge you that money anyway and it's pure profit.
When the original iPhone was released it was unsubsidized and people laughed at the $600 price. But, for $20 a month you got unlimited data and texting. so yes you paid more upfront, but your bill was $20 a month less than a comparable subsidized phone. So over the course of 2 years it was a good deal.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any carriers that will discount the monthly plan when you bring your own phone.

Realy?! My data plan is $30/month 6gigs regardless of the phone I use. If I get a new phone from them ,on say a 3 yr contract, I don't have to get a new plan. How does what you say make any sense?
If i was to change carriers (why would you unless you are cconstantly moving?) every time I got a new phone and was always getting a new contract to reduce the purchase price of the phone, then yes, the price of the plan would probably be higher to subsidise the cost of the phone.

You're missing the point. The monthly 4G plans are the same price as the contract plans, at least last time I checked. I looked at buying the international Galaxy Nexus when it first came out and putting it on T-Mobile and that is what I discovered.

You're misunderstanding what I said. You pay right now $30/month for your data plan (in my example I chose $100 to represent minutes, data, and texts as an example). If you were to buy an unlocked Galaxy Nexus right now and put it on your plan, you'd still pay $30 a month, but you'd be out $400 for the phone. However, if you are due for an upgrade, you can could get a phone for $200 (subsidized) and still pay $30 a month.
In both cases you are paying $30 a month, but in the former you are paying more for your phone. The only advantage to buying the unlocked phones is not being stuck in your contract if you hate the service.
But my point was that US carriers base their monthly rates on the fact that they have subsidized your phone. When you bring your own non-subsidized phone, they don't discount the phone accordingly. So you end up paying more and they ending up making more money.
Doesn't T-Mobile have lower monthly plans when you use your own phone or buy one at full price?
Most people would want a data plan on their smart phone. So its cheaper to get it on contract since they require smartphones to have a data plan regardless of where you bought it. Data plans are not cheaper if you brought your own, its the same. The only good thing about buying a phone off contract is you can jump to another carrier without ETF. IMO, the only.phones I would buy off contracts would be unlocked international ones.

Not when I last checked.

I didn't read up on it, I'm going by the first few sentences at the top. I have a few friends that use this plan.
Since this phone is not carrier specific, does that mean you can use it with AT&T using the $15 unlimited data plan?

That must be new, when I looked into it a few months back it was not an option. Or else I had an uninformed sales rep at the time.

I am referring to the unlimited data plan for "non-smartphone" from AT&T. As long as you are using a phone that's not sold by AT&T then they won't recognize IMEI and treat it as "non-smartphone".
For the samsung galaxy, AT&T has its own branded one and there is also a "world" version which also supports AT&T 3g band but AT&T don't recognize it. I assume the this is the same with this phone sold directly by google?

Upgrade phone and keep unlimited data

http://www.phonedog.com/2013/04/23/...s-that-it-can-be-used-to-keep-unlimited-data/
So technically you still pay full price for the phone. plus maybe there are some hidden fees
I could see using this option if the development group dies off and I still want to keep unlimited data. Besides, I haven't had 700$ cash for a new phone since the day I said "I do."

$2/mo "finance charge", plus, since you are no longer paying back a phone subsidy, they really should discount your monthly rate.

thanks, I knew there was some kind of hidden charge
so you pay
full price + $2 X 24 months = extra $48
I'd rather pay full and save $48
Im debating between that or buying from amazon...ive been doing surveys online n have about $320 saved up in amazon credit, Woo!!

You get 12 months to pay it off so its only 24$. I also never said it was perfect but at least if you are broke, you have options

If you are on an old family share plan and don't have 5 lines, you can still add a line for $9.99 a month. Get a smartphone, activate it FIRST on the NEW number when it arrives. After that, go only and switch it to basic phone. They will remove the data charges. You may get billed for 1 month of data prorated, and then credited the following month. Then take the brand new phone and activate on the unlimited line. So if you wanted the s4 you would 250 + tax, then get a $50 rebate. Then you just pay $9.99 a month for two years. After taxes it's like $15 so 15 x 24 is $360. You get a $650 phone for $560 and the cost is spread out over two years..........and IF you already have a basic phone on the family share, then when that contract is up, you can cancel and have the number ported the newest line activated (the one to get the new phone) and pay less than $360.
I have two phones on the 1400 min unlimited data plan from back in the day. Upgrades are due to me in August. Do I have to pay full price for my upgrades to keep my unlimited data or do I get the upgrade price as long as I sign up for another 2 years? Just confused about all this.

You must of been under a landslide or something... This happened about last year when VZW axed the unlimited plans. If you upgrade with carrier subsidy you will say bye-bye to your unlimited data. Tl;dr if you want to keep unlimited you're going to pay full retail for your devices.

Compare your current costs and data usage vs their new tiered shared data plans...
Keep in mind that the new plans have unlimited calling and text and now you get nailed on the data. You need to pick out the data size you want then add $40 extra for each smart phone on the plan..
Yeah I average 11gb or so, so I'll be holding onto mine as long as possible...or I might go to tmo..

Totally agree with that!
I talked to a Verizon CSR yesterday, about adding another smartphone to my plan (my wife currently has a dumb phone). I was concerned about getting pushed into a shared data plan, but the CSR said I can keep my unlimited data on my line, and just add tiered data to my wife's line. Doesn't matter if I use an upgrade on her line, as long as I don't on mine.
I think Big Red took a lot of flak about trying to kill unlimited data customers, and is backing off (slightly) on trying to terminate unlimited, altogether. They'll make it slightly more restrictive, but they're not aggressively trying to do away with it.

Mobile Share Value Plans

Not sure if anyone really cares or not but I just knocked $105 off my AT&T Family plan bill with their new Mobile Share Value Plans.
I'm not a sales agent for AT&T, I'm just letting my fellow XDA users know.
https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/data-plans.html#fbid=K-dU-76XrWB
This is a real deal if you have a large family plan like i do with 5 lines and all smartphones. I was able to lower my bill to $192 a month from $306 the previous month with one phone call. And even better we are getting 10gigs a month now vs the 6gigs i was on.
I know I'm going to take some heat for spamming the board but if one person saves some money I'll be happy
ok flame away
Not sure if its worth giving up an unlimited data plan for this plan.
Ya, I saw those plans, heck, it's even worth it for just 2 lines and 10Gig, $100+$15+$15=$130. I am paying 70 for my single line and only 2gig of data. I know, everyone will tell me to go to a prepay, but I HAVE to have the microcell so I am stuck.

Unl plans are caped at 3 GB... Then u get the slowest speed...
10 GB = $100 + 15 per device
15 GB = $130 + 15 per device
Completely worth it. Now if you do an upgrade after moving to the plan instead of paying 15 for that line you will pay 40... they are trying to cope somehow how T-Mobile works.

I went ahead and jumped on this. I had to give up 1 unlimited (LTE) data plan, which was throttled after 5GBs anyway. I think it's worth it to save $90/month.
We went to the value plan. Only two lines, so no massive savings. Went to from 6 to 10 GB for $10 cheaper
I was under the impression that once you switched to one of these plans, you no longer would get subsidized phone upgrades. Correct? In other words, the next time you want to upgrade you basically are on the AT&T Next setup (full unsubsidized price of phone broken out over x payments)

This is correct. Also, if you have currently been in contract for 6 months, they will allow a switch to AT&T Next. I feel it will not be long before they completely go to this method, especially with T-Mobile and others doing much the same.
Ive held on to my 2 line unlimited everything plan for years, paying about $185 before taxes and fees. I think it makes sense to go for this new plan, which drops the price down to $150 while sharing 10gigs. i've only ever gone over 3gigs in a month two times.

Okay, so if that is the case, it seems like you will only save money if you do not intend to take advantage of subsidized upgrades in the future (assuming still available).

From a purely monetary standpoint, yes - however, when you compare the data that you receive (10 GB vs 4/6GB), you are still saving money if you use that much data. But without taking advantage of the subsidized upgrades, you would most likely even out.

My understanding from the AT&T rep (and my bill) is that each smartphone in the value plans are now $40 per month with a $25 monthly credit, so net $15.
If I upgrade using a Next plan, the $25 credit remains. (Next = a 0% interest loan to purchase the phone over 20 months.)
If I upgrade using a 2-year subsidy, the $25 credit is removed. (Making for a really expensive upgrade-- 24 * $25 + $200 up front = $800 for an iPhone 5S that I could purchase outright for $650.) Not that I'd purchase a 5S, but just an example of how an already overpriced phone just got even more expensive.
Basically, they really do not want people buying subsidized phones, and that's fine with me. I'd rather purchase the phone I want on my own timing and pay for it outright.
Up until the value plans it made sense to do 2-year upgrades because AT&T was already padding their rate plans with the subsidy cost, whether you upgraded or BYOP you paid for it.
Now, it makes more sense to just BYOP.
Yes you have to stay on the next plan, ability to get a new phone yearly or 18 months, to keep the $15/month. I also saved 50% on my phone bill.

This is good news, I was worried that when i upgraded with NEXT it would go from $15 to $40. I guess I should have read into it a little more, but yeah, my family is saving close to $100 since we switched to the value plan.
Love this plan. Switched to it immediately.
The Next program is basically a phone leasing program. So if you pay $30/month for Next18, that $540 is gone when you trade in for the new one. It would be cheaper buying the phone out right then sell it when you wanted to get a new one.

Upgrades?
I changed to the shared plan two months ago, losing my useless unlimited plan. I moved 5 phones. Two of them were eligible for upgrades at the time, but I was holding them for when I really wanted them. I need one now. I went to the ATT website and checked upgrade-ability. The two phones seem like they have subsidized plans available to them. I can also do the Next plan for any of my phones for the same price. So I can pay zero interest for 20 months, have no plan commitment, and pay in full for my daughter's new iphone over 20 months, or I can pay $199 for the phone, a one-time $36 upgrade fee, and commit for another two years of my shared plan. There is no change to the basic rate.
