How To: Replace internet browser in dock bar with Chrome (or anything else) - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

Edit: found a much simpler way, feel silly now. Just open app drawer, move from dock to app drawer, then add any app you want to dock.
So I've been stumped on this since I got my One. Just stumbled into this solution. Stock unrooted 4.1.2 T-Mobile HTC One. Here's what I did.
To replace the browser icon with Chrome:
Go to Settings, Apps, All Apps, go to the stock browser (Internet), select Disable. Check to ensure it has disappeared from the dock bar. Open the launcher drawer, long press Chrome as if to add to a home screen, then put it in the empty space where the stock browser was before.
Voila.
If you want, you can enable the stock browser again.
The only thing I've noticed so far is that this caused Chrome to actually disappear from my app drawer. Strange, but I'm happy with it in the dock.
Hope this helps anyone like me.

thanks for sharing your ideas.

the way to change the dock icons are to hold down app icon in drawer and drag down, to remove do the opposite drag icon up out of dock into app drawer... much easier than disabling apps and yes it does make it disappear from app drawer however it seems on the home screens if you drag an icon up from the dock it clones it if you want the icon somewhere else too

Folders not updating as shortcuts on homescreen

I seem to have stumbled on a quirk I haven't seen mentioned yet and am looking for help with it.
I'm using folders to categorize apps and when I add them to the homescreen as shortcuts, they work as expected. If however I then add more items to the folder, it doesn't seem to update the shortcuts properly. The number in the corner stays the same and the new items are not displayed.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Yup. Same for me.
Also for the TW app drawer, if I reboot the phone, the app orderings would mess up. I've organized mine to a certain order...and it varies a little bit everytime I reboot which is extremely annoying.
Unfortunately still the case in the new KE7 build. I'm surprised it's not bugging more people, is this not an oft-used feature?
you forgot that there are other launchers , i use go launcher

Sorry for bumping the thread but..i just wanted to say thank you for that useful information.may i ask what color of your jeans you prefer?

I don't think this a bug.. it seems that whenever you drag the folder fo you home launcher it is treated as a single entity and not linked to your folder in your app drawer.
The only solution for this is wheneved you update your folder, simply delete the old one from your home launcher and drag the updated one from your app drawer again.

How to remove dock bar in ADW EX?

I just updated to the latest version of ADW EX, I found that the dock bar must appear and I can't hide or remove it.
Anyone have this problem as well?
You can hide it. Use a swipe gesture to hide/unhide it. Latest-latest update (1.3.3.55) allows it to overlay your homescreen instead of pushing everything up.
Sent from my T959 using xda premium
You can also Long Press your home screen, choose Launcher Actions, choose the Open/Close DockBar icon.
Use it once, to hide the dock, then delete the icon from your desktop. Voila! Dockbar is hidden, and won't come back until you go through the process again to reverse it.
WAAAAAAAY better than the stupid swipe action that you'll always be triggering by swiping on widgets like News360, Books, YouTube, etc.

I do the swipe method because I like to have the dockbar but I dont want it always visible.
You can keep from opening it while swiping on a widget by swiping the widget slower.
Never had an issue with the dock reappearing on an accidental swipe and I use both up and down gestures religiously.
Happens to me when using "tiled" widgets like the YouTube, Market, or Books widgets, if either swipe up or swipe down is selected. It's a "sloppy" swipe to use those, but ADW intercepts any motion outside the small cards.
It's not quite as bad on a widget with a bigger card, like News360, since you have more "finger on the widget" with the larger cards.
My method works fine, I have absolutely no use for the dockbar with the way I use Honeycomb.

When im scrolling through scrollable widgets, even if i go outside the widget during the scroll, as long as i dont lift my finger, it still registers as being in the widget.
If you're okay with your method, then use it. Everybody has their preference, mine is using swipe gestures to open/close dockbar and app list
I just mapped hide/show the hidden dockbar to the home button, but this feature may have been removed in the new version. I refuse to update it until he fixes what he broke (primarily the ability to stretch the screen to the edges, and the spacing of the bar.

Screen is stretched to the edges. I also kept from updating until today for that same reason. Unfortunately we failed to catch that during testing and it made it into the 1.3.3.5 update. But it's been fixed in the 1.3.3.55 update.

Unfortunately, there is no option to completely eliminate margins anymore. I believe it it was more of a "the code doesn't allow for it anymore" than just a "the option was removed" kind of thing.

Well, whatever the reason, it's still a step backward. The spacing on the dockbar is still ludicrous for a tablet. The old hidden dockbar I could have a lot more things on it. Even without scrolling functionality, I liked it better.
Newest update (1.3.3.56) now has the option to completely disable the dock for those interested.

Does anyone else notice that the widgets overlap when using adw ex? I use it on my phone just fine, but it looks horrible on my tab.
It doesn't matter if I install it from the same google account as my phone right?

Well, if they can't fix this, I guess I am stuck on the old version indefinitely if I want to use the Tab the way I've set it up. :/
Is the Hide/Show Action Bar (the top transparent bar with a few little icons and the access to the ADW settings) also gone now?
I just updated from 1.3.3.1 to 1.3.5.56 and my homescreens are all a mess now. I've lost some of the icons I had vertically, stuck to the righthand side of the homescreen as well. C'mon! I think we're really loosing precious tablet screen realstate with the latest changes, even if they have managed to quickly revert back to the option to disable the dockbar altogether.
Before the update I used this dock as my ICS style dock:

Now there is absolutely no gap between the dock items and the line anymore. Is there a way to let it look like ICS dock again?

I know the update caused all themes to need updating, but I don't know if the dock was affected. Have you tried the ics adw theme? https://market.android.com/details?id=kov.theme.ics Maybe even just try the dock from it.

Adding shortcuts for stock Web or Reader on desktop?

I am still learning how to do things. Is there a way to add shortcuts on opening the stock B&N Web browser and Reader to the desktop like you can with other app downloads? I hate always having to hit the home "N" button to bring up the options for Web/Reader access... Very annoying.
I am rooted and have blocked the OTA already.

Are you using the default launcher or a 3rd party app?
What launcher are you using? You should be able to tap and hold in the app drawer and drag them to the desktop.

I want to use the default launcher and not Golauncher. As far as I can tell, they don't show up in the default app drawer or in app manager when using the default launcher.

Check out this app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.hari.sideloadapps&hl=en
You will be able to put apps and shortcuts on the normal launcher.
It will also appear in your normal app library along with the others.
I have to Nook Color App Manager, but the Web browser doesn't seem to show up in there.
Also, I can find the .apk for the browser in /system/app as browser.apk, but that only installs the app.
Have you tried the app 'anycut'?
Sent from my rooted NT using Tapatalk
Yes, tried Anycut also. The newly created shortcut doesn't show up on the desktop. If I run Go Launcher and use Anycut... Then the newly created shortcut for The browser shows up with no problem. I just want it in the default launcher.
I've tried asking the forums here if anyone had figured out how to launch the reader with a shortcut or application, aka a shortcut similar to the "open book" icon on the Nook bar. Little response, lol.
I've tried anycut and the nook color app to no success. "Reader.apk" does not launch my currently open book. It just opens a blank screen. I've settled to accept just opening the library first and then opening my book.

[Q] App Drawer Replacement?

Okay before you all yell at me and tell me to get a new launcher, that is now what I am asking. I dislike the stock app drawer. I was wondering if there was a way to do a complete replacement. So lets say I download Jetpack Launcher, which is basically a App Drawer replacement. I want that APK to be my "stock" app drawer. So I was wondering if there was a way to move the APK from Jetpack to the location of my stock app drawer, essentially completely replacing my app drawer. So when I hit the stock button to go to my app drawer it would open Jetpack as the default.
Anyway to do this?
I don't think this can be done with stock launcher...even the Jetpack article you linked to says you have to put a shortcut on the home page to access it (the stock app drawer is part of the launcher application).
That being said, if you use another launcher like Launcher Pro, you can just reassign the dock shortcut to anything...like Jetpack...
You can always try out Zeam launcher. I was intorduced to it from Jokers skinny4g locked.
I was pleasantly suprised how lite it was due to little to o learning curve. It is also fairly well featured in he settings you can do.
The action bindings, are very cool adding swype commands that can replace shortcuts on your workspace. Once I got used to the bindings I was able to remove allot of the clutter on my home paage.
I have tried quite a few pay launchers, and this one is simple to use and hase quite a bit of customization you can do.
That's not what I am asking. I am asking how to completely replace the app drawer. I do not want a launcher.

Ok...can't be done.
Unless...you decompile the stock launcher; decompile Jetpack; figure out how to replace the code that does the app drawer in stock with the code from jetpack; then recompile the apk and then place in /system/app/ and fix permissions. Probably more work than its worth...
Forgot to mention Zeam lets you customize your app drawer. Side scrolling, up down, how many displayed icons width, height, weather the app draw bacground is translucent based upon percentage..
Either way good luck on your search.

[Q] How to automatically have apps on drawer in Apex Launcher?

Hi folks.
My first post.
I am not entirely sure if I should post this question into the Nexus 4 forum (as that’s the device I have) or if there is a Apex related forum? Or whether it is best to put it in this Android Q&A forum. As this is not device specific I have decided to post it here. Please more it is that's the wrong move to make.
MY QUESTION - APPS IN APEX LAUNCHER
When I install an app (which is typically via the Play Store) the app icon does not end up on my home screen. Or what I think Apex calls a drawer. Occasionally an app does appear there automatically, but perhaps a couple out of the 50 or so apps I've installed.
The only way I have found to get them onto my drawer (or home screen) is I have to hold my finder on the screen and the "Add to Home screen" menu pops up. From there I can select "Shortcuts" and from the top of that menu I can select "Apps". I can then select just ONE app to appear on my home screen. But the thought of doing this for every app doesn't make sense to me. Is there a way to get them there automatically?
Perhaps I am completely misunderstanding the concept of the home screens. I am switching over from iOS, and there one organises all apps on home screens. Perhaps on Android the home screen is not meant for storing and accessing all the app icons??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you can hold down on the a home screen one of the options is to create a shortcut. Next you go to apex options. Then app drawer, you can then move it onto your dock and move it as you please. Pic. Tutorial attached on nexus 7 but it should be about the same.
Hope this helped~Flainz

Thanks for taking the time to answer and to post the images.
I do actually have an icon for the App Drawer down on the Dock.
So am I correct in understanding that the App Drawer is the primary place to access apps on Android?
If that is so, then is it correct that the home screens are only for storing some apps, and displaying widgets?
Just now I tried to organise some apps in the App Drawer into folders. But holding on an app (I just now discovered) engages the process to move the app to the Home Screen. At least now I have found a more direct way to get apps onto the home screen. The process I outlined in my OP was somewhat convoluted.
So this is starting to make more sense to me. Please correct anything I have misunderstood:
- Home screens are for quick access to apps I specially want direct access to
- Homes screens are for displaying widgets
- The App Drawer is where all apps can be found, and any I want quicker access to I must manually copy to the home screen
Am I thinking along the right lines here?
One question though. Why is it that occasionally when I install a new app it does in fact appear on the Apex launcher home screen (automatically, or as soon as I move something around like an app icon or a widget)… and yet most apps do not ??
Thanks...
Yup that's how it is, unlike apple if that's what you came from the main home screen is the middle one and if you hold down on any home screen you can access your wallpaper to change it

PS. I just realized I read your op wrong lol the home screens are basically a place for widgets and storage for app shortcuts you can go into your app drawer and hold down on an app then you can draw it to the home screen or if you do not have Google now you can use Google search to look up your apps. Unlike iOS if you want to uninstall you can not just delete it off of the home screen you can go into Settings>Apps>[app you want to delete]>then uninstall or clear data, for launchers, and app set to default, a clear defaults to revoke the app as launching by default for certain files hope this helps

Great. Thanks.
Much appreciated. I am greatly enjoying my Nexus Android experience thus far. I had to spend weeks hacking away on my jailbroken iOS device to get it even half as nice and functional as this beast, and I've only had this out of the box for a week!
Nice I'm glad you like and not to mention the extra screen size right xD
