Optical Reader - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone has been able to get their hands on the Optical Reader APK. I would really like to use it, but haven't been able to find anywhere on the internets that someone has uploaded it. While I am competent in basic root, etc. I don't know how to pull this from any roms myself. Would really appreciate any help if someone has the time to upload it as an APK, since I'm not rooted. Thanks!

I have been searching for the program as well all week and I've come to a couple conclusions:
There is one individual from the T-Mobile forums looking to help us less fortunate (Verizon) users with the .APK file, but unfortunately there is a .odex attached and he hasn't gotten into deconstructing that yet.
A lot of users are suggesting downloading a program called 'CamCard' from the Samsung App Store (also removed from our phone but downloadable). While this seems like a nice substitution (which I haven't tried), it seems it's only for the business card aspect, and not the all in one package deal that optical offers.
Update: If you do decide to go with 'CamCard', you would also want to add Photo Reader, but you still lose out on translation. 2 out of 3 features ain't bad.
RUMOR: It seems that someone was able to get a hold of Samsung, and confirmed that Big Red did remove the program. From what some users are saying (from their contact with customer support) is that Verizon merely disabled the program and may push it out in a future update. I've attempted to go through every system file and folder but wasn't able to come up with anything, so most likely it's just gone.
I'll be sure to come back and update this if I read any more information.

Stay away from CamCard. It's a piece of ****. I bought it 3 years ago i think it was and when I requested support they gave none so I disputed the charges with my bank and got refunded, It's probably the worst program I ever used. Funny thing is, I can still use it an update it with no issues.

Some of the answers are above. Using Hyperdrive RLS 4 ROM, which got Optical Reader from the international version. However, when you open it, it tries to update on Samsung Apps, and gives you an error that the device does not support it, and shuts it down. Tried getting it on Samsung Apps, and again gives an error that the device does not support it. CamCard is really for business cards only. Google Goggles does not do as great a job either (at least the formating sucks). Until then, I will practice patience....

Same experience as you, (with the exception that I am running stock rooted) it appears that the file it is trying to download is a database, and it is just over 50 meg.

I've read the suggestions to download CamCard, but for me 1) It just looks shady (IMO) and 2) It looks to only be of use for business cards. So I plan on staying away from CamCard. I have used Google Goggles in the past, and while it works, Samsung's Optical Reader looks awesome, and I'm really itching to play with it. I appreciate the responses, really. Guess until someone has time to put it together, I will just have to patiently wait and continue to use Google Goggles.

Well, I guess as just a minor update:
I was able to find both the APK and ODEX files from somewhere in the depths that is XDA. I attempted to move both files into the system/apps folder and change the permissions to rw-r--r--, but after several restarts and do overs, I'm not having much luck on that front. There was one suggestions (via Hyper thread) that I would have to change the build.prop file device.name, but I would like to avoid making edits to the build.prop if possible.
Any suggestions?

Wonder if you can change the build prop, then get it from Samsung then change it back?

Running Hyperdrive 5.0 (before it was removed in 5.5). It works for a few seconds then, I get a black screen, then "Unfortunately, Optical Reader has stopped." .. Funny thing is it is working fine up until this point (the few seconds). Almost (just almost) feels like there is a service running in the background looking for, and killing this task. Grr Verizon.
(Crappy picture attached, could not screenshot the app)

I've got the apk and odex file pulled from an ATT GS4. Not rooted (and still not ready/willing to root. Eventually, maybe), so can't just drop them in sys/apps. Try to install and it acts like it is installing, then tells me application not installed. While I am capable of properly rooting a phone, I'm still a noob in terms of porting an app. Read somewhere on XDA that it probably needs a signed key for my Verizon GS4. So now I'm reading up on android app development and how to do that. Still learning so it will be a while before I make any progress. Anyone more skilled than I am that would like to take a stab at making a distributable APK that works on my Verizon GS4? You would be my hero. I can upload the files I have if so.

Do NOT use the odex file. It is probably used in phones that aren't verizon and has flags, so when they mismatch on app vs device it'll FC. Let the device build its own ODEX. Likely needs to be a /system app too. Try getting a build.prop from a T-Mobile user and editing a few lines from Verizon like brand, name, device, board, etc to a T-Mobile one. (installing their build.prop might work as well but idk). You could use a ROM like Synergy to block their "phone home" stuff or something.
I'm just spouting ideas here. They may or may not work.

If anyone still wants this, here's the stock NC5 Samsung optical reader apk. I just followed the directions on the main Google code page for baksmali and smali to deodex and run this on custom ROMs. I can attach the deodexed version too if needed.

[REQ]Myfaves.apk can anyone get it to work?

I seen someone post this question in the Dev section, but I have the apk file, and tried to put it in the system/app, fix permissions and had no luck. Thought someone with more knowledge than myself could get it to work. I know I can operate them from the website, but I like the ability to do it strait from my phone.
Attached is the apk , just need some help to get it to work.
This did work on my G1 with CM 5.0.8 which is an eclair build, but the command I used to get it to work will not work on the vibrant.
I have MyFaves working fine on my Vibrant, it was in one of the Vibrant ROM builds so I just backed it up in Titanium Backup and then when I installed Eugene's Vibrant9 I reinstalled MyFaves and it works. I don't remember whose ROM I took it from so let me try to figure that out because I don't want to post without giving credit. I've just been backing up Apps and Widgets that I like from different ROM builds and installing them on Eugene's Vibrant9, so unfortunately I don't remember which ones came from where but I'll look into it and post once I can give proper credit.
I thought T-mobile was phasing out myfaves

Unless it was altered by a DEV there is no credit to give, the app was created by TMobile, I would love to know where you got it, or just put up the apk, at worst case scenario if you cannot remember and it was altered to work the Dev will say something, but its just a tmoible app, so please post what you got so we can see if it works for the rest of us

I know for me when I use the newest internet explorer, there is a security pop-up that comes up when I go to the myfaves part, if you click yes, that breaks the program, you have to click no everytime you load a page within the myfaves area, I figured that out by accident, but if you click yes, then the page will not load any of the options you have selected. So just click no to the popup at everypage within the myfaves part and it should work for you.
just dont know what to do next
I downloaded your MyFave.apk. Installed it on Samsung Vibrant 2.1 in system/app using root explorer. Then I went over to rom manager and clicked fix permission. after reboot a myfaves icon appeared in my app draw. Heres where it starts to suck. I click the icon and it opens and closes extremely fast and a bubble window at the bottom screen says myfaves is off. Well i dont know how to turn it on. Has anyone else had this happen before... Please help its driving me nuts that I cant figure it out
Deleted. Didnt read the whole thread.
New thoughts to get myfaves.apk working
Sorry if my last post seemed a bit noobish, in all honesty forums are very new to me. Let me go threw what I have done and what I have been thinking might work. Upon my last post I was on 2.1 eclair build, in the recent months I have upgraded to using Team Whiskey products. I am currently on Bionix-v 2.2 build w/ voodoo. Anyways I digress. I can install MyFaves apk with no force closures issues. I have to use root explorer to move to system/app and manually change permissions to rw-r-r then reboot. Icon will appear in app draw. upon clicking the icon I get a myfaves off notice (below is a picture) again no force closes thou. So I have attempted to refresh myfaves from tmobile website hoping that would turn myfaves on. I have observed thou that it says will only work for compatable phones. As mine for example never refreshed. Now heres my thought
What if we change the build.prop to reflect a myfaves compatable phone? Does anyone think this would trick the myfaves server into refreshing my myfaves contacts? I also have noticed that there is 3 differnt size my faves apk roaming around the web and different sites. The one that worked for me to get this far will also be posted below. It was the smallest size apk available and NOT THE ONE POSTED HERE ORGINALLY.
Well if anyone has any insite on this my ears are open. For some reason this is a lil project of mine that I keep coming back to and still quite cant let go.
Again sorry for previous post, and if there is another thread I should post this in please let me know also.
Maybe together we can give this project new life!
Following this thread. I have a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) and MyFaves on my Grandfathered plan; would love to get this app working.

This is not MyFaves, it's just a favorites manager.
A functioning app would be great. I am tempted just to change the build prop but I don't know what adverse effects that would have on the phone. If any one wants to test it out I can tell you how to do it.

Well, I tried copying the file to my sdcard and tried to install it... it failed.
I tried to copy it to my system/apps folder and I get an "Insufficient Perminssion!" message.
I'm using the OTA updated ROM T-Mo pushed out like 9 months ago for my Mytouch Slide... non-rooted.
So, I guess I need to be rooted... to try again.
Thank you. This is so *****in'. I am stoked that it works. Nice update from the MyFaves.apk I had that did no longer work. =-)

Apk's I don't think should be included in roms.. or name reasons they should

I would really like to know why some free apks are included as system files, such as titanium backup and launcher pro.. As I have bought both paid versions, I have to go through the hastle of removing these, which sometimes appears not to be possible.
They are FREE. If someone needs them, can't they just download it themselves? I don't think any free apk should be pre-installed if it will block a commonly owned paid version.
If anyone wants to explain why these should or are included in most roms, please do. Also, if someone wants to explain a definitive method to get rid of these programs(that are not uninstallable normally because they are system files), please do. Using root explorer and deleting the actual APK doesn't always work, sometimes the file is recreated despite the fact I just deleted it.
I imagine, at least with launcher pro, that MAYBE it is themed(though I haven't seen this yet), but I still imagine there would be another easy way to get it out there..
Anyways, I don't want to be flamed, and I do appreciate the hard work these devs put into these roms, but I haven't been feeling like trying any of these newer roms just because I will have to remove half of these free apks anyways, and it is a pain I just don't want to have to go through 3 times a month.

All the roms I've used include extra apks in the /data/app directory. And with the two examples you provided, neither of them require a replacement apk for the full version. Titanium has an extra apk for the pro license, and LP you can just input your license.

Roms are a composite of many things. Stating "i don't think .apks should be in there is like saying "We shouldn't have the modems in the rom. You can download and flash them separate". Now does that sound like a coherent statement?. A custom rom is a composite of what the dev envisions how he/she wants the phone to perform. No offense but the statement doesn't make sense to me.
1 - they usually are in data/app for easy removal
2 - if they were in system/app, how hard is it really to go there and delete the .apk
3 - you dont need to remove these to upgrade to the paid version... unneccessary step
4 - the developers put them there for convenience to the MAJORITY
5 - you could always make a rom
6 - really surprised you didnt mention stock bloat from samsung thats included in roms, instead you choose most peoples fav 2 apps.

I'm not on any dev team so if my logic is wrong, please correct me. But, to answer your question about why applications are added to the ROMs, I think it mainly boils down to convenience. Those to apps, and I'll even add ROM Manager to the mix, it provides me the quickest, most efficient way, to get my device setup, after flashing a new ROM. I mean, I flash the ROM, use Titanium to restore my apps and settings, especially my LauncherPro settings. I gotta be honest, this is the first I have heard of someone not wanting those two apps specifically.
I have paid versions of both of the applications that you are describing, I have never had to remove the existing one, in order to use the paid version. Whenever I flash a new ROM, they both come up as the paid version. Both applications write the license credentials to your SD card. If the credentials exist when the "free" version starts, it becomes the paid version.
Do you have experience otherwise?
I agree with everyones response!
I don't need the other crap like Facebook or Twitter, but Titanium and LP are my saviors when it comes to quickly restoring my phone setup.

CityID apk

OK, here is my question. Its about the Cityid apk. I know everyone hates it, i like to have it for 1 reason, my job. I am a tech for a Hotel chain, with hotels all over the country. I work oncall alot, and Cityid is handy for the reason that when the city and state pops up, i know what property is calling! I have tried to reinstall it in system/apps and setting permissions properly, but always says application not installed. Any help would be great guys. Thanks!
i can't offer any help but just so you know, this thread will likely be moved since its not a dev thread. You really should be posting this in Q&A.

Well, since CityID requires fees beyond the 2-week trial period AND apparently has a habit of nasty nagging beyond that period if you don't click on the EXACT right thing at the end of that trial period, it's undersandable why nearly everyone wants it yanked.
Not all apps in /system show up in the app drawer because they are low-level services. I'm fairly certain that CityID requires BOTH the APK AND the stock dialer - this isn't immediately obvious since it's probably about the only thing that someone using a non-stock dialer would be missing.
Anything using the stock dialer SHOULD still have it if you install the APK (But you MIGHT have to do a wipe as it may only work if you have the stock dialer AND the APK initially). Also, I believe there might be some free alternatives, but they're hard to find because CityID loves lawsuits - http://androidforums.com/incredible-support-troubleshooting/104641-best-caller-id-app.html
Thanks for the input man. I do pay the 1.99 subscription fee. I was on unnamed 1.3.1 for a couple months and it worked fine. I am trying ICScrewD 2.0.1. I am not sure if either of those were stock diapers or not...
I don't understand how this is patentable. Reverse lookup is fairly straightforward and has existed for a while before cell phones were involved. It's not really a difficult task to have a lookup table with a list of known numbers. Just because they do it on a phone, they can patent it and sue anyone?
I backed up it with titanium backup on a stock rom and usually restore it when I change roms using the stock dialer. It always works again. It also seems to reset the trial period so I am not sure how the app determines if you are an actual subscriber or not.
I'm gonna give the stock dialer a shot...
Is it just the stock phone.apk that needs replaced?

hmmmm ok, well i saw that but skipped over it
because on all my other roms/including stock, i dont remember it being an app,it would just auto-connect
and it was always a system apk as well
let me go check it out though
It was excluded because CM10 has absolutely nothing to do with ATT. Or any phone for that matter. So unless somebody kangs CM10 and adds in an app, it's going to always be as bare bones Android as you can get.
Essentially, CM10 isn't ever a bloat removed version of any phones stock ROM, because it's build from aosp source, so the bloat was never there to begin with, and likely wouldn't be added in anyways.

the system app one, like if you're at mcndonalds , will connect to it automatically (mcndonalds is one of the stores on ATnT wifi partnerships)
if you didnt have the app, you can still connect(its free wifi no password) but you would have to first open up a browers, read the agreement, and hit accept blah blah, before you can start using the wifi. again the system app skips all that and just connects you

It also skips all the payment info at some places that still charge for WiFi, so long as it's powered by AT&T. I wouldn't mind having this feature back as well, even though I'd rarely ever use it. Honestly, my cell is faster than the WiFi at any Starbucks or McDonalds around here. But I can see a use for it while traveling. Maybe download one of the stock ROM flashable zips and just extract the necessary apk, put it in /system/app and see if it will work that way. I'd try myself, but I'm a tad busy lately and already in trouble for all my downloading this month.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the one on Play is too bloated. I don't want that junk handling all my WiFi.
Is this what you guys are looking for

I just rooted Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a and was going through the cleanup list when I came across this file. I wasn't sure what this file was for until I read this post. I am cleaning it up but here is a copy - in case you can make use of it.

Good call. He's clearly not as crafty and trustworthy as you, Mr. Replying-to-a-year-old-post. You're really the gold standard in solid membership.

Well, Mr. Useless Retort, I was searching for this very apk and was about to download it until I looked at his stats. You see, the fact that a post is a year old doesn't make a lot of difference if it has information you need. You see, Mr Useless, that's why the forum goes back many years.
Note that my reply wasn't intended for him, it was to warn off anybody else who might think about downloading this.
See how that works??
I think you can get this apk from the market, or what I do is google for apks -- especially older ones when the market updates me and the update sucks. I haven't been burned yet.

Googling for the apk is what brought me to this thread. I've never been burned with a download, either, but then I've never downloaded one from somebody with a single post.

Where is all my beautiful bloat???
<link Removed> pretty much same reason, no rom means no need for the missing bloat...
Thank you guys for giving this rom a try please leave feedback if i missed anything and hit the thanks button if this helps you.
I hope you enjoy using it as much as i did making it.
Android 4.4.4 is no more for this device, look forward to some 6.0.1 developments, should see a nice kick-off now that there is a developer edition conversion for the retail versions ^_^
@mods: Please close thread as support for this rom is null.

Congrats!
Thank you, it took me a while to figure out what i was doing. I am super excited i finally was able to get a stable release.
After playing around a bit i noticed the autocomplete bar just above the keyboard with suggested words when typing is gone. I havent tried a third party keyboard to see if this is something to do with the samsung keyboard failing or if i removed something that prevents this from working correctly...
Haven't noticed any other bugs just yet.

I have to ask what might end up being a naive question: Why is the public offered these "Developer Edition" phones? For me, it would be in hopes that enthusiast ROMs get developed for that device. But, if the retail end is never updated and never unlocked, then what good would a Developer Edition phone be, except to the singular owner? Maybe that's all it is intended to be? Just curious. I guess the name is the misnomer. Rather than Developer Edition, just call it Unlocked... It would be a cool thing if Verizon/Samsung would offer to turn our retail phones into the Developer Edition phones for a fee.
It has the do with Verizon. They can't market it as a retail unlocked device amd since it will only work with verizon they can't really say its the "global" or "international" version. I believe if they marketed the device as "Verizon unlocked device" they would have to also offer it at a subsidized prive or "upgrade" and it would be regulated by verizon. We have seen what Verizon does to phones, I would really like if they never touched the devices.
Thay said the developer edition is to encourage developers to buy the device and make not just roms but apps as well. It would.be more so marketed towards someone who is not using this device as their daily driver but want to grab one just to tinker and make neat things specific to the device or use it to test things they've already built for compatibility so theey can update their apps to rin on this device as well.
Conaumers have never used anything with android on it strictly as planned though. If that was the case we would jave.none of this amazing developmemt, thats what I love about the android OS its so flexible.
Anyhow back on track, did you test the rom? What did you think? Should I include anything else or remove something else?

Thanks for the response. I hadn't really consider the making of apps as a reason.. LOL.
I don't have the Developer Edition yet, just the retail, so I have't run the ROM. I am seriously considering selling my retail to get the DE so that I can get onto Android 5.x. Every phone that I have ever owned was rootable (and I have had a lot of phones), but this is the first one that has no root in sight and no update in sight, so, I am considering the Note Edge DE or the Note 4 DE. (Honestly, I am hedging toward the Note 4 DE. I had the Note 4 just before this Note Edge and prefer the 4 a bit more). Anyway, that is why I am lurking in here, trying to get info on the DE.
The note 4 has more support for sure. And it is hard to find a decent note edge case. O couldn't see myself ever going back to abphone without an edge though. (not the silly s6 edges either, I need a real edge.) In any case no matter what phone you choose I am sure you'll enjoy it. These note series phones are my favorites so far. Could onot be better if they had included a physical keyboard like the droids had back in the day. Physical keyboards are boss. good luck with whichever device you pick, if that happens to be the edge let me know what you think.

Could you pm me the links to all the needed files to do the extraction of the boot and every thing needed to make a stock tar from my phone? Also the links to the kitchen and such?
Thanks in advance.
I wasn't able to make a stock tar flashable in odin.
However to get a system tar which isn't flashable but can be opened in 7zip and extracted to give you all your syatem files you just need to open the terminal emulator, type su then hit enter so you can elevate your session to root. Then type tar -c system/* >> sdcard/system.tar then you'll get system.tar on the root of your internal storage.
Then to get the boot image you need to dl some files from http://www.androidforims.com/threads/without-pc-unpack-edit-repack-boot-img.811999/ and follow his tutorial for the extract part. But our file system is a bit different so the command is different.
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/boot of=/data/local/tmp/boot.img
Then use root explorer to find the file in data/local/tmp folder.
The kitchen I used to make my custom was archi. Get it @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2597220

Cool deal, thank you. Going to get it going asap, but I just found out my dad has bone cancer so it will probably get back burner'ed for a while.
Any idea how to make a flashable?
Other than making a rom like I did I wouldn't know how to make anything flashable. I'm really new to this, this is the first time I've done anything like this. You could ask around the other developer's threads or send one a pm. But I'm sure the best we can do is a rom flashable in twrp or cwm.

To fix the no auto complete on keyboard open your keyboard hit settings and download your language again and that should fix it.

Awesome. that's probably it I must have deleted that in the rom. I'm using a different keyboard though and the bar is there. I was just thinking for someone else using the rom and wants to use the swype feature on stock it may be a problem. Ill look into what I may have deleted that would have erased the dictionary.

That's odd. Should be able to install. Try using the method in the other thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3103782
I can only think of a few reasons TWRP would fail to install. Check the usual stuff like cables and md5 checksums, then try to see if you deleted aboot somehow.
If you lost that then you will need one of the more experienced folks here at XDA to help recover that, if even possible. The only methods I have available to offer you though would require you first have either TWRP or CWM installed.
Hope you get this resolved though. Let me know if you get through it.

Boy it'd be nice if Verizon just gave us a one-time option to convert our Note Edges to Developer Editions. Otherwise, I don't see there being much of a future for the phone.
