{Help] Soft keys dead, Touchscreen working fine. Suggestions for a ROM like Nexus 4 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings my fellow XDA experts,
I have a Galaxy S2 (i9100) International version on the NeatROM 4.8 ( XXLSW). What has happened is that my Softkeys are dead and unresponsive.
There is no illumination and response from them. So I have a phone without the menu and back buttons, which implies that I have a f**ked up iPhone like phone with just one Home button to function with.
I took the phone to the service center and they said it's a single piece with the display so the entire display would need to be replaced which is unreasonable and needless since the display works absolutely perfect.
So I was thinking of a remedy in terms of the ROM I use with the phone. Is there any custom ROM available for the S2 which would enable me to use a part of the display as the MENU and BACK buttons itself ? Like the Nexus 4 has ? I don't mind losing out on screen space to enable me to get those buttons back.
Please do suggest me any such ROM's or methods through which I can use the phone without having to change a fully functional touchscreen display. Spending so much just to get the Soft key functionality back is plain ridiculous and a pure manufacturing drawback from Samsung. Yuck
Anyways, please do help with any pointers.
Thanks and Cheers !

You'll be hard pressed to find a 4.2.2 ROM that doesn't have some sort of on-screen control. Do a bit of searching around on XDA of all the 4.2.2 ROMs, look at screenshots etc. Navigation bar is the same style as a Nexus 4. Pie controls are a method of on-screen control. AOKP ribbons are also for on screen control. There's probably more. Then there exist ROM's which attempt to mimic the AOSP, Nexus-style experience. Plenty to choose from.

So basically My ROM territory is now limited to any 4.2.2 AOSP/AOKP Rom's ? Do all of them have on-screen navigation?
Like the Parandroid? No more Sammy Rom's obviously.

Hmm well I imagine you could find some lower than 4.2.2 with those controls if you wanted to, but no need to if you don't want. You can use ParanoidAndroid if you want, search my posts for a link for i9100, I posted it yesterday or the day before I think. It won't be the first link you find on Google thats for sure, version 3.6 is the latest. As far as 'limited to 4.2.2 AOSP/AOKP'.... Depends how you see it. I don't see it as a 'limitation'. Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23231772. Go through AOKP and AOSP till you find something you like. Bear in mind that the AOKP contains waaay more than just plain AOKP, there's hybrid (combos of CM,AOKP,PA, AOSP usually) and all sorts in there.

Enable Navigation Bar in AOSP/AOKP roms etc for getting these functions back.
Alternatively if you want navigation bar in Sammy Roms you can still have them , look for soft key enabler in play store or else you can edit build.prop of your phone , there will be option of soft keys , change it from 0 to 1.

Use pimp my rom it have a option for on screen buttons (back menu and recents) so you can have any rom

S2 soft keys not working
Issue seems to be related to the usb charging receptacle. As long as a good charging cable is connected, the soft keys work. They work for a short time after unplugging and then stop working again.

An app or mod to remove key light

Greeting everyone.
I recently got an Android and I also recently decided to root and stick a custom ROM on it. Everything went fine and dandy with that and I'm currently on Cryanogen 9 Alpha ROM (it's spectacular to say the least).
On the default ROM you could choose to turn off the key lights (I'm talking about the touch keys on both sides of "the master button"). However, neither does Cryanogen 7 or 9 offer me this option and because I'm so used to it, lights seem weird and unnecessary.
So, after searching the interwebz for a while, I couldn't find anything useful and hence my post.
Thanks in advance for any help given.
Furthermore, fantastic video!
Bump! (Too few characters apparently).
tried this?

This requires .bln (BackLightNotifiation) mod which isn't featured in my current ROM (Cyanogen 9).
Thanks for the input anyhow.
I would like to know this too. The keys are allways on in CM9 unfortunately

It turns out that you can turn them off in CM7 but unfortunately I'm yet to find a fix for CM9.
you can try to modify the following script in the middle of this post to make it work in cm9

Thanks a bunch for the link.
I'll definitely give it a try when I have a bit of spare time.
EDIT: This script also requires BLN (which I talked about above) and after searching long and hard, I have found out that there is no ICS kernel with BLN support (while some others knew this, I certainly didn't).
After looking around further it seems that I/we won't get the feature for a while since BLN seems to be the only way apart from integration within the ROM (like it is within TouchWiz or CM7) that you can turn off your soft keys.
Latest build of CM9 has removed backlight!
'Tis a glorious day.

Wow, I've been looking for a way to disable the keys and while the script won't work for me messing with the settings did the job, that was my only issue so far. Cheers for the share. I'm using MIUI with siyah if anyone cares in order to make it work.
PS: games and movies look much better with no white lights :O
EDIT: Well, guess I was beat by the software had a notification during the night, and now the lights only stay off until the first time the screen gets turned off, after that they go back to their normal behaviour unless I reboot :|. On the look again for another way.
EDIT 2: Ok, I'm not giving up, for now I found yet another way for anyone interested (you need a BLN kernel however).
I installed BLN Control Pro, disabled everything and put BLN blinking: On and Led OFF time 3 minutes.
Now what I do is enter Test mode, turn the screen off and on, and now, the lights will be off for as long as I keep the program running. The only problem with this, is that BLN stops the phone from going into Deep Sleep, so I just need to remember to turn the test mode off and to disable BLN whenever I don't need the buttons off.
It's not a pretty solution but for now it's the best I could come up.
no setting for that

[Q] Official ICS update have on screen buttons?

It uses the device buttons. I believe its just the Galaxy Nexus that uses the on screen buttons. Once some custom roms come out based on official ICS update, you can flash the on-screen button. I flashed it on LPH a while ago and had the on-screen buttons if thats what you want. But it feels like you have less screen space since you have device buttons as well as on-screen using that mod.
But to answer your question, the SGS ICS uses device buttons on official build
Thanks for the reply.
Rather use the device buttons and have full screen display.
Glad to hear its possible,
read somewhere ICS allowed on screen buttons only, glad that is not the case.

ON-SCREEn Buttons Mod (Like on the Galaxy Nexus)?

Hey Guys,
well the topic already explains my concern. I would like to know if there is a way to activate on-screen buttons on my S3 like its standard on the GNex and deactive! the touch buttons, but not the Homebutton .
I find it not convenient to use the touch buttons because they are pretty far down in my opinion, Im always scared to drop the phone if I dont use two hands, while trying to touch it and sometimes if I push stuff whats on the bottom of the screen, I accidently push the touch buttons, this is pretty anoying too.
So, is there maybe someone working on sth. like that or is it even possible to change this without flashing a custom rom?
Thanks n greets
Rob
No one an idea?
I would also like it if someone can do this.
It's definitely possible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696092

[Q] Will I lose these features if I flash Cyanogen into my phone?

I've been recently thinking about flashing the latest stable CyanogenMod into my Galaxy S3, having been really satisfied with CM 7.2.0 on the Galaxy Ace. However, having seen a friend of mine who flashed Cyanogen into his phone, I have a couple of insecurities about some system features I'm afraid I might lose.
Specifically:
Will I lose USB and wifi tethering? I use it to give my home computer internet without having to put my laptop's Ethernet and wifi on bridge mode, and back when I had my old Galaxy Ace, CM 7.2.0 didn't have USB tethering while Samsung's official ROM did.
Will I lose the power saving mode? I find it very, very useful when I go on a night out, which means having to keep the phone on for at least 12 hours straight. I kinda have seen that axing the phone's maximum CPU speed to 800 MHz kinda helps, as well as using GO Power Master's 3G pulse mode (so I can keep receiving messages while having the 3G off), but I have yet to do some extra testing.
Will I lose the notification bar toggles? When I checked my friend's Galaxy S3 with CyanogenMod, it didn't have any power toggles on the top bar. I tried using an app called Power Toggles, but My Data Manager interferes with it, it doesn't have full access to the system's toggles (like the GPS which as far as I know is per Jellybean's programming), and its flashlight also turns off after I lock the screen.
How do other third party launchers (Apex, Nova, GO) perform compared to Samsung's TouchWiz launcher? (haven't installed them yet because that would mean having to put again in folders every single shortcut for my ~200 apps).
Will I lose the NFC? I'm fine with settling for Android Beam instead of S Beam, but will I be able to keep the NFC function? I kinda remember my friend saying CyanogenMod 10.1 didn't support it.
Lastly, how does Cyanogen's camera compares to Samsung's? I find the picture stabilizer, button zoom, picture burst and panoramic stitch modes extremely useful, though I remember Cyanogen 7.2.0 having the ability to bind the volume up button to the shutter, which allowed for some seriously stable shots.
Thanks in advance.
1) no
2) can be replaced with various apps such as SetCPU
3) can have toggles like now or quick tiles. Choice of both. Or none.
4) Much better. Better on Touchwiz ROMS too
5) I dont use it but its in settings so I assume it works
6) Its not quite as good.
1-4) As answered above.
5) Yes it works.
6) Camera isn t as good as the stock Samsung camera. But everything pretty much works. Recently, touch to focus with flash also got fixed in CM.
Note : - If you try CM, I advice you to try Temasek s ROM. It is based on CM. And it has quite a few nifty features added extra + kernel with features ported from Andreilux kernel (Good battery backup) [This is just my personnel opinion and I am in no way advertising any ROM].

[Q] Can you add "silent mode" to Touchwiz volume controls?

Hi guys,
first time poster here (except for a few random comments). I'm relatively new to the forums, but have been reading up on a lot of stuff as well as having played around with ROMs to try and improve my SGS2's battery life. So along with having gotten myself and extended battery, I'm currently running NeatROM 4.8 which is a Touchwiz-based ROM. After trying a few different ROMs I figured that I actually kind of like Touchwiz compared to vanilla Android or the different launchers. However, a few features are missing.
My main problem with Touchwiz is that it doesn't have the "silent mode" option. On my GNex I'd have "volume", "vibrate" and then finally "silent" when you hit volume down one more time after the vibrate mode. I thought it was quite ingenious, and I hate not being able to set it to "silent" in Touchwiz. I know there's the quick menu option to disable the vibration, but that's just a pain compared to the other feature.
SO...does anyone know of a way to add the vanilla volume control to Touchwiz? A mod? A flashable zip? Some simple launcher that wouldn't kill my battery completely to fix the issue?
Tried searching for a solution in the forums, but didn't find anything that answered my question. Hope someone can help.
you have it ine 4.1 roms as dropdown toggles and in the power button options.....still don't get your point....

That kind of IS my point
I don't want it in the quickmenu (dropdown) toggles. And I don't want it in the power button menu. I'm looking for a way to get silent mode on the volume buttons like it is on Google Android.
I'm not aware of something such as that. My advice would be to post up on the NeatROM thread, super friendly bunch of blokes on there. You'll need a few more posts (need 10 all up) before you can post in a dev thread, but you should be able to get that no worries.
