Gallery app lag due to wifi - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Anyone experiencing crazy lag in the gallery app when the wifi is on? When I turn off the wifi I have no issues. With wifi on I can't even scrolling in the through the folder. I have to use quick pic as an alternative but I really want to use the gallery app.
FYI I am using cleanrom 1.3 if it matters
Thx

Hope this helps someone. I got the hint on what is causing my issue based on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1692976&page=2
I also have a plex media server on my home network and sure enough once I disabled the Plex Media Server service my gallery was smooth again. I also confirmed it by going into the gallery app and select Show all near by device and my Plex Media Server popped up. Resolution? Disable (Freeze) the NearBy Service app using Titanium Backup... now all is well again. =)

I'm experiencing the exact same issue, running galaxy note 3 on t-mobile. Is root required to freeze this app? Are there any other alternatives?

Is there a way to prevent wifi from restarting on its own

Does anyone know of a way to prevent the wifi from restarting itself. I am having the data connection issue and turn wifi off but it is back on again a little while later.
Are you using any battery/app management apps? Greenpower?
No battery management app and even after a factory reset I did yesterday for a different issue, it is still happening.
Bump... Any ideas>
can you describe the problem a bit more please ?

I have the same problem with mine. Wifi keeps restarting or sometimes hangs at authenticating. Very frustrating and makes wifi connection completely unreliable. I dont have any battery management app or no task manager either except for default one that came with Atrix. I use inbuilt battery app in "nighttime saver" mode thou.

I will turn wifi off through settings and later, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, I will notice that it has restarted. This is without reboot. At first I deleted all the previous connections, but it still did this. I have even done a hard reset, flashed back to stock and I continue to have this issue. When it is on I have the data connection issue seen on multiple forums where I have to reboot my phone to get a data connection back (not calls, no sms, no email). This happens even though I have never reset up any wifi locations.
Any other specific questions?
BTW, I have the battery saver that came on the phone in performance mode.
try this to see if it helps. go to settings>wireless and networks>wifi settings> press settings button> advanced> turn wifi sleep policy to never.
maybe that will stop it from turning off.
I actually want it to STAY off when I turn it off. I would love to have it on sometimes but since that crashes my data connection, I want to keep it off for now til the fix for that is out.
Also, it seemed worse before I installed GingerBlur, but it still happens, just less often.

Did you flash the new radio after going to 2.3.4?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159505
May or may not help!
I flashed att pudding full 183 then cherryblur 0.5d...I don't think that either of those flashed new radio...
I believe I have N_01.77.15P now...going to update to latest version.
I believe this only affects the cellular radio, but I after doing some research it seems if you are going to be on 2.3.4 you should upgrade to this one..

[Q] [4/28]All barcode scanner apps crash after official froyo update

Does anybody notice the same issue?
My phone is not rooted. After the official update to 2.2 (ED01) I found this problem with all apps on my Fascinate that have the scan function: google goggle, shopsavvy, amazon, etc. Sometimes they crash at starting (goggle will force the phone to reboot), but most of the time you can open the app and scan properly once or twice, then the scanner fails to auto-focus or adjust brightness or white balance, getting no response. Hitting any keys on screen or the back key will only end up with vibrating and screen-blackout. I can only exit the situation by hit home and kill the app in task manager.
I found a similar post around xda:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894544
The problem is said to be associated with the stock Email.apk and will be gone once you run the email app. But this solution doesn't work for me.
Anyone has more idea?
I just tested out Google Shopper and Barcode Scanner with two barcodes each, and neither had any issue. Have you opened up the camera app since updating? Froyo brought about new camera firmware, so if you haven't opened Camera since updating, that could be what's causing the FCs.
The stock camera app and third-party apps like retro camera both have no issue. The picture-taking function goes well, problems only come when the app need to scan back and forth and auto adjust.

Thank you for testing that for me. Can more people try out? Am I the only one that have this issue?
If so I assume this is an individual problem that can be fixed by factory reset, although I am reeeeaaaally unwilling to do that.
My phone is all tricked out and everything works great.
I tried on my wife's phone which is stock and it has numerous issues with camera, google goggles, market, barcode scanner, etc... surprised she's not noticed. :/
Rebooted and everything worked.
Google Goggle's might have crashed and caused the initial issue.
So, maybe just a reboot will help you?
Thanks, but I have no luck with that. Roboot doesn't help at all in my case. I even uninstalled the Goggles and the other scanner apps still suffered the same issue.
Google goggles works for me

Lag be gone

I've loved this phone except for the fact that sometimes (several times/day), attempting to launch an app causes it to.. not launch..
The issue for me was the default memory (when to kill apps) settings on my phone. Solution was to install autotask memory optimizer (root) from market..
Using the preset Extreme (150,160,170) which allows the OS to kill more backgorund apps (but not services..)
This is *not* a task killer.. It simply optimizes the android OS and the way that it deals with apps.. if you're getting frequent lags (apps not starting/etc) - try it. You do need root for it.. it is the single most important thing that I've done on my phone to make it work the way it should..

FIRST !!
(sorry iSaint )
I'm going to give this a whirly gig.. Every once in a while SPB shell 3D will have to reload.. annoying.. maybe this will help.
I'll report back w/ results.
Ill give it a try thanks. ViperMod had a similar script to optimize the EVO 4g memory.
I've been running this for ~4-5 days now (although I did change my settings a bit - Foreground app 6mb, visible app 12mb, secondary server 100mb, hidden app 200mb, content provider 225mb, empty app 250mb..)
0 lags since I started using it..

Nothing in advanced..
But I had previously frozen a bunch of things in Titanium backup (but was still getting lags until this) - specifically, the following are frozen for me -
bookmarks widget
books
com.motorola.photowidget
com.sprint.internal
data collection 1.0
data collector service 1.0
data manager service 1.1
data collectorprovider 1.0
fm radio
fmradioservice
global unplug
help center
home screen tips
music 2.3.4
smart device manager
social messaging
social sharing
social status
sprint worldwide
sprint zone
..I also remove the following apk's (tried freezing them but didn't work/were still running.. so removed them..)
adservice
dlna
dlnasystemservice
friendfeed
motophoneportal
performancemanager
phoneportal
sprint_installerNC
sprintmobilewallet
swype
vtt-sprint
w_installer
(but again, I had done all these changes before and was still getting lags.. it wasn't until I reset my low-memory settings that my lag disappeared..)
-mark
Thanks for the suggestion for the app. So far, experiencing no lag either since installing it .

[Q] Any redditors on ICS?

Recently updated to Ineffabilis Deus and have some annoying bugs with the different reddit apps I've tried. Not sure if this is an ICS problem or an Ineffabilis problem.
50% of imgur links display for a split second and then go to blank screen. If I zoom in, the picture comes back.
All youtube links open in Chrome rather than the youtube app. I tried clearing defaults for Chrome. I also tried the "App associations" menu in settings, but I don't see the youtube app as an option for anything in there. I also used to have (on Gingerbread) an option to send youtube links to xbmc, via xbmc remote app, but that's gone too.
Anyone know if this is an ICS thing or an issue with the ROM? I don't think it's a problem with the apps, since the same thing happens on both reddit apps I've tried and I don't see anyone complaining about it in the comments for those apps.
Any other redditors on ICS had problems (or solutions)?
On ICS with exact same ROM and issues using baconreader here.
Will troubleshoot.
Mine shows some, while others do as you explained. I am stock rooted 3.14.

Youtube links won't play in YouTube on Ics or sense 3.6 I don't know which controls what. Something to do with an Apple patent lawsuit if I'm not mistaken
To allow yourself to be able to select apps to launch instead of launching chrome or the default browser automatically, you must uninstall "htclinkifydispatcher" using titanium backup or something similar. This stops the phone from automatically choosing default apps and will let you choose from whatever browsers you have installed (or youtube, if you are trying to watch a video) instead. So far the only issue I've found with eliminating this app is that whenever I try to launch a link sent to me in gtalk, gtalk force closes. Otherwise I am given the freedom of choice of which app to launch when browsing reddit. If you don't care too much about a partially malfunctioning google talk, uninstall htclinkifydispatcher. Back it up first (just in case other apps start malfunctioning, for me only google talk is affected, but it may vary for others) and then uninstall. Freezing it will not work.
Hope this helps

Issue with all direct link static images in baconreader. Animated GIFs or where it renders the website too are fine. Also only has an issue on first load, have to zoom or back out and reselect link to make image reappear. Once cached, the image renders fine on a re-read.
Yet to find any combo of Developer options, Display, or stock browser settings (assuming baconreader may render links with stock browser settings) to address that particular problem...
Edit: Recommend deselecting "Open links in app" in baconreader and in other apps if available, if that issue cannot be resolved. Feedback from other ROM users appreciated. May ask the developer about bug.
Edit 2: Stock browser settings have no influence on the issue, app renders direct link images independently.

Yeah I use google talk a lot but not nearly as often as I browse reddit. It's so frustrating trying to watch a YouTube video in chrome instead of the designated app. I think this problem (feature?) alone makes me want aosp more than anything else about sense on ics. Give me freedom to choose my apps!
I found this problem with baconreader and reddit is golden. It's annoying but but I just double tap the imgur and it shows (zooming).

How to disable search for DLNA servers in Gallery app?

In my home network I have 3 DLNA servers that allow streaming of all myvids/music.
When connected to wifi on my S3, if i open the Gallery app it automatically searches and parses all files on available DLNA servers.
This drains a huge amount of battery life! and it does this every time the gallery is started.
So far I have not found a way to disable this search or even to limit the servers.
I am running stock everything.
I first thought it was the "All Play" service but disabling it did not help. I know believe it may be a part of the Gallery app itself.
Any thoughts/ideas on how to disable that functionality in the gallery app?
Note- this is not the same as DLNA file sharing. disabling that only disables sharing of files from the s3 to other clients.
This annoys me as well. As much as it is kinda cool functionality to have, every time I go to show a picture of something on the phone at home, it spins up the hard disks in my 2 NAS devices for no reason. An option to turn this off would be great...
I have the same problem. My WD MyBook Live, and media players in the network show up in the gallery and slow it really down. I hope somebody has a solution to this as so far I only can stop it selecting the option "View by" "Content in device" but that can not be saved.
Here is something i have found.
If you select "View By " from the Gallery options menu then choose "Content in Device" it disables the DLNA view.
BUT
only for that instance of gallery.i.e. if gallery app is killed then you will have to choose option again.
Still you only have to do it every time you reboot your phone.
there is another thread just like this that has opped up same section slightly different request.
Ill pop a link from this thread into the other and see if we can get an answer. Have you disabled the media scan function in the wi-fi section?

The thread you posted was only started yesterday. This one here has been here for a week.
Either way ill jump on the other one and get the guys to jump over and get to answer I know you can remove the image cache but I'm not sure about the continual load because even if you remove the cache it will just keep updating it.
You can also root your device and manually remove the Allshare apk's. but that removes the allshare functionality of course.
I have done this on my S3 and gallery no longer searches for DLNA servers.
I've decided to use BubbleUpnP for DLNA streaming purposes instead.
Any luck?
Just got my S iii and am having same issue. I vaguely remember it asking about dlna upon setup, but I cannot find how to disable it loading pics from my PC every time I open gallery. Battery killer! Btw, there is nothing in the other thread mentioned about this. Has anyone figured it out?

I haven't seen any comments on here in several months, has this been resolved? (Aside from getting a replacement Gallery-style app.)
I'm new to Verizon and have the S3 (Verizon model of course) and have the same problem. I turned off all DLNA settings but the Gallery app still searches. I have Plex Media Server at home (Mac version), so Gallery gets extremely sluggish when I'm home and have WiFi turned on. It's sluggish to the point that I have to slowly enter Task Manager to exit it; no sense even trying to get the "Content in Device" option set because it never sticks and takes almost forever to get to because of the sluggishness.
I also went to the other forum link posted above, but that seems to be talking about WiFi always scanning, not this Gallery/DLNA issue, unless I'm missing something...?

on my rooted note 2 I used rom toolbox to permanently remove anything 'allshare' related, as I don't use that stuff. It resolved my issue with gallery slowing. I have plex installed, but it is not sharing photos.
Deleted.
I think I managed to solve this on my device.
I went into the "more settings" under wireless and network. And into "Allshare cast" when I turned this off my gallery suddenly started working again.
*edit*
Nevermind, it was just for a few minutes. The app started to slow down after I closed and opened it again.

Guys, this is an old post, but the same keeps happening with newer models, and i didn't want to use a third party app. I downloaded an app called DisableService (needs root) and disabled the service SystemService inside NearbyService. The nearby devices list has disappeared from the gallery's menu and the gallery starts up a lot faster. I have yet to try if the gallery will still spin up my nas but i'm very optimistic.
