[Q] 64GB Micro SD card issues - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Ok, after buying a cheap and corrupted 64gb micro sd card, I went and spent the money on a 64gb sandisk card. It works just fine. Now, I am rooted and have synergy rom build 104 which is also running fine. I noticed before I flashed the rom that cwm wouldn't recognize my external sd card. I read up on that and found that cwm won't read cards formatted to exfat. So, I formatted the card to fat32 and remounted, transferred all my music back onto the card. Everything worked just fine until I plugged my phone into my computer. I was able to open and navigate through the files like normal, except when I went to open the music folder where all my mp3s were. I tried this on 2 different computers and on both the computer froze with the sand timer. The phone itself was fine, my music player(poweramp) was and is able to play the files with no issue. Also, when I unmounted the card and put it into a card reader and then connected the card reader to my computer and voila! Everything was fine, I was able to open the music folder and scan through the music files. I am not sure what the issue is. Can anyone shed some light as to whether this is a phone/rom issue, a micro sd card issue, an mp3 issue? Any ideas would be appreciated.

That sounds like a bad sd card. Have you ran a checkdisk on it?

If it's a SanDisk 64GB MicroSDXC UHS-1 then they have a replacement program where the older cards had issues in the S3/S4 devices. They sent me a free replacement and everything seems to be working. No Damaged card errors as of yet.

Hm, been searching around for this exact issue. Coworkers S4 with this exact SD card has been getting the removed unexpectedly error. Reformatted a few times, restarted phone, error comes back. It's in my Note 2 at the moment for troubleshooting, and so far so good, but this makes me move more toward an actual SD card issue in combination with the s4, and not the phone itself.

The SanDisk issue only affects the Galaxy S3/S4 as they told me. My other 64gb Sandisk card works just fine in my tablet.

I called them and they are going to exchange it out for me. The weird thing is that I didn't get any damaged card error messages on the phone itself. It mounted it as soon as I popped it in. Even after formatting to fat32, it mounted right away with no issues. It only happened a couple days after I transferred all my music onto it. Is the free replacement they give you a newer card or newer model number?

+1 to the above. SanDisk told me they have a new version of the 64gig card with updated firmware, specifically for the S4. Package tracking shows mine is to be delivered on Monday.

Yeah, the guy said they were having stock issues and said it would take 3 weeks for mine to ship. Oh well, at least they are exchanging it. Thanks for the help guys!

So are all 64GB cards having issues, like other brands? I want a 64 bc my backups are freaking huge and taking up space. And with being rooted how would I transfer everything to the new card without messing up the phone?

So when this card tanks, I have to drop the big money on a card specifically made for this phone. Is this a problem with existing cards or did Samsung do something that required this firmware change?

They told me that too. My guess is it's due to the mass recall of the chips for the S3/S4. They said it's not present in Tablets so my 64GB in my tablet would be fine.

+1 problem with Sandisk 64Gb UH-1 card. Unexpected removal error. I am writing just for statistics. Just got my new Verizon S4 - and have problems...

FYI - I'm having a similar issue with a Samsung 64GD card. Got it to see the music for a while yesterday but after a reboot it can no longer see it.

Update, I received my new card and just popped it in. My phone automatically formatted it to exFAT. I'm not going to try changing it to FAT32, but is there any version or way I can get cwm to recognize the card in exFAT format? I tried TWRP, but when I flashed a rom it soft bricked the phone so I would like to stick with cwm.

WTF is wrong with my Evo and SD card??

OK I'm at a loss. I've searched for this issue and haven't seen anybody else experiencing this problem.
My Evo is relatively new. Had it just about a month now. Still stock. Haven't had any real problems until I bought a 32GB SD card. I've purchased 2 actually and have had the same issue with both. The phone reads the card fine supposedly. Shows 32GB available (just about). But I'm having the HARDEST time copy files to the card. I've got a ton of music, pics, ringtones, etc I'd like to get on this device. I can connect the phone to my PC, mount as a disk drive and copy to my heart's content. But then when I disconnect the phone and try to access some of those files, they're gone. I mean just GONE. The entire directory I just created with all of it contents... GONE!! Not misplaced or deleted by accident. GONE like they were never there. Like I didn't just spend 10 minutes copying 2gigs worth of files. And this happens just about every time I try. I unmount the phone properly, see the message on screen "preparing sd card" and all seems fine. But my music player says there are no files. Gallery is empty. Go back to look for the files I just copied on the card and nothing. Nowhere to be found. Now of the few hundred times I've tried this now, the directory actually stayed put a couple times. I was able to view my pics, or listen to my music. The folders stay right where I put them. But guess what. The next time I try to copy more files, my directories will disappear again. I've tried 2 different brand SD cards with the same results on both. I've used both Astro and ES to view the cards but it doesn't make a difference. I've even used and external card reader and copied files directly to the card. Still no luck. Please help. This is driving me crazy. Could this be a problem with the phone itself? I don't get it...
Well if you have used an external sd reader without success then the problem is not your phone. Your saying if you copy files to your sd,you cant see them after? So it doesn't copy from an external reader?

I strongly believe the problem is the format of your card or your computer.
If you are transferring files from your external sd reader and if its still there when you check, but gone when you insert it in your phone. Then I also strongly believe that you are looking in
/sdcard directory which you should actually be looking at /sdcard/ext_sd/
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I'm saying that no matter if I use an external card reader, SD adapter, or connect the phone directly with a USB cable, the files I copy to the card will disappear "magically" once I dismount the card from the PC and attempt to read on the phone. Usually this is the case. But like I said, a handful of times, the files were where I put them, but disappeared the next time I tried to copy more files to the card. And no I'm not looking in the wrong directory. I know the difference between the sdcard and ext_sd folders.
What brand of cards are they? Do you have the same problem with cards of a smaller capacity?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
This looks like a problem with your computer settings. With some configurations, if you don't explicitly eject/unmount the drive from the PC, it won't actually move the files. It will only truly copy them when you begin the eject process.
I tried a Kingston 32GB class 10 card first, then bought a generic 32GB class 10. Same issue with both. I do have a smaller 8GB SanDisk class 4 card that I have not tried yet.
I made sure to "safely remove" the cards when connected to the PC. I've tried from both a desktop and laptop. Same results all around. I thought maybe the problem is with class 10 cards but I haven't heard anyone else having issues. I also thought to try a 16GB card. But that would suck since other folks are having success with 64GB cards.
I'm about to try to reset my phone and see if that makes any difference. I may be headed back to the Sprint store this weekend.

Where did you buy these cards? This seems like a fake capacity card symptom to me. Try copying just one or two songs and see if they stay. The cards are probably fine but this is something I ran across with a friend's card before who unfortunately turned out to be a fake. I hope it's not the case for you. Also (since the cards seem to be empty for you) run this to be sure the SD card is genuine.
If you actually bought it from a reputable source, then my bad but it's best to get all bases covered.
Now if the above is not it and you had the problem with two different cards, then the issue (probably) lies with your computer/transfer cable. Try doing the reverse, copy some things on the card from the phone and try to read it on the PC. If you need something to copy you can always copy the ringtones that come with the phone at /system/media/audio/ringtones.
Let me know what you find out
I seem to recall issues initially with 32g cards acting up, but I thought only if they were a certain class but could be related? Try the 8g you have. I had issues mounting the 32g I had, class 4 I believe, when I was still on stock. Sometimes it would mount, other times it would dismount for no reason without any warning. I would just know bc I couldn't access any thing on it.

Make sure the cards are formatted Fat 32 to begin with. And yes, definitely try the smaller sd card you mentioned.
Are you sure your looking in sdcard2 and not sdcard when in a file manager?

Download SDFormatter from sdcard.org. It has always fixed my sd card issues with my phones.

OK well here is an update.
It turns out the generic 32GB class 10 card was defective. Was able to verify that with the test utility racer posted. Thanks for that btw. I'm running the same test on the kingston card to see what it says.
I also did locate my 8GB class 4 card and that worked like a charm. No problems copying data to or from the card and definitely no disappearing directories. I just want a larger card. LOL. Hopefully the kingston one is ok after I format and test it.

64GB MicroSDXC working

Hi everyone, just wanted to confirm that 64GB MicroSDXC cards do work. I bought this one http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007WTAJTO/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_1
At first it will not work, but you must format it with the phone and it will work well. Reports 59.6 GB

having tons of problems with mine; tried formatting in Windows (FAT32 with "guiformat.exe"), formatting in the device a few times...
Every time, when trying to copy stuff onto the card from my Windows machine, after a few GB the connection just drops...and then the card doesnt seem to work properly until re-format. Everything is *extremely* slow to respond, even to the point of screwing with explorer when I open "Computer" in Windows from the start menu...
Bad device? Bad card? PEBCAK?

believable- this is why I only buy Extreme Pro CF cards for my camera
alas...the Extreme Pro line stops at 16GB for the MicroSDXC line, (perhaps thats a hint at the difficulty of reliably making rad MicroSD cards?) and I'll be damned if I have an Android with less storage capacity than an iPhone.

Doubtful...sold by Amazon.com LLC. I don't buy eBay shiest unless I can't find it on amazon or somewhere that either accepts google wallet or is within driving/shouting distance. Still though, I took your advice and downloaded H2testw and will run the test tonight.

That used to happen to me, got very frustrated because I could never copy things to my flash cards. Turns out the problem was my card reader. Try getting one of the USB ones that can actually read SDXC. I don't have one, so what I did is put it in the phone, then connect via USB to the computer in mass storage mode and it worked great.
I had the 64GB SDXC as well, it at first seemed to work, but don't be surprised if it stops working. Motorola, and I believe stock Android do not support SDXC yet. I have a somewhat detailed thread here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...d-cards-hd-maxx-hd-class-10-32gb-vs-64gb.html
When I got my card, popped it in, it formatted correctly, and seemed to work fine. As I started to put it through its paces it started to just not work. On ICS when you used the Storage option to transfer media to the SD card, it would stop halfway through and throw out errors. Eventually certain apps would stop writing/seeing the card like backup apps etc..
Be careful going forward, and test it hardcore. Transfer files back and forth, I always had issues with movie files. See if Root Explorer or other explorer apps can see it, see if Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro/SMS Backup can see and write to the card.
And yes, I did not get a dud, its works in other non-Android devices and works and tests perfectly in multiple computers. Just be cautious.

These are all the same symptoms I'm having. Well, it looks like Motorola actually had testing and reasoning behind "supports up to 32GB" :-| That'll teach us to think we're smarter than the factory QA guys...
Still though, it's a little disappointing.

Indeed, some of the Sammy devices support the SDXC 64GB card, but I think that's baked into TouchWiz. Hopefully as SDXC gets more popular it will become supported by Android all together. It would be nice to have at least half of my music library on my car so I don't have to stream all the time lol.
Confirmed working with a 64GB SDXC, works pretty well actually, now I'll never run out of space.
I bought 2 64GB micro SDXC cards. One for my Xoom and the other for my upcoming XT925. My Xoom was unable to format it so I used EaseUS Partition Master to format my 64GB cards as FAT32 partitions. So far so good...
I tried my sandisk SDXC 64Gb yesterday with no luck. It was formated to exFat though. I will try EaseUS tonight and try formatting it to Fat32.

I have a 64GB card. No issues.Took the card out of my Maxx.
I bought a 64 sandisk sdxc class 10 and tried it in the phone. Didn't work. Formatted to fat32 with a partition program, still wouldn't work. Got fed up, deleted all the partitions, threw it in the phone and itr was recognized, but blank. Had the phone format it, and it works. Phenomenally actually. Haven't tested read/write, but I've filled it a few times over looking for problems and had none. Without looking I think I have just shy of 40 used on it right now.
You'd think Motorola would say something about that.
Got a 64gb sandisk class 10 and it's really buggy.
Forceclose/card disabled automaticly/cant see my files/Many lags.
So for me the xt925 is not compatible with it.
I've been using mine for about a year now, it's been working flawlessly. I had to format in my phone the initial time I first used it.

External SD card help

I have a Sandisk Ultra class 10 64gb external SD card which has worked well since I purchased the phone (several months ago). Recently however, I've been running into issues where the ROMs I've tried won't recognize it (Beans, Carbon, Liquid). The strange part is that TWRP recognizes it without a problem (I've flashed from it several times). I've tried both nandroid and clean flashes. I've done a a battery pull and booted the phone without the card mounted. When I insert the card, I get the typical "Preparing SD card" message, which doesn't seem to go away.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I could try and fix it (other than hopefully buying a new card)? Thanks.
EDIT: Ignore. Formatted the card and that seems to have fixed it for now.

I was going to say, Format the card should do the trick.
I have the same card but the 32gb. On Amazon alot of people complained about the card not functioning after 6 months of use. So I opted for the 32gb version which had the same complaint, just not as abundant.

I see you've fixed the issue, just in case you didn't already know though AOSP ROMs can only use the card when its formatted as fat32. TW ROMs can use the card formatted as exfat. Going back and forth between TW and AOSP may have corrupted your card if it wasn't formatted as fat32 when you went to AOSP.

It may just be that the card died, I have several 64 GB class 10 micros and have no issues, from what I hear though the class 10 is the worst and if you can get the original 64GB that wasn't a class 10 these issues aren't there.

I'm guessing something got corrupt somehow, or the card is on its way out. Once I reformatted it, it started to work again.

SD Card dismounting constantly

So I am having a problem where my Sandisk 32GB MicroSD card is getting dismounted from the phone. It gives me an error message like "SD card has been removed. Please use the Safely Eject SD card option to prevent data loss" or something like that. Then, it finds the card and runs the media scan, which renders my card useless for that time period. The screen also turns on for a minute or so during this time. Then it stays mounted for maybe up until 5 minutes before starting over again.
This absolutely rapes my battery, taking it from a full charge to dead battery in less than two hours. I thought maybe the SD card was going bad even though it's fairly new, so I took it out and tried it on my old Motorola smartphone, and it works fine and never dismounts. So I thought perhaps it's something with my phone, so I tried an older 8GB micro SD, and it works fine without dismounting at all.
Some info. Phone is running stock 4.0.4 with root and unlocked bootloader. The 32GB SD card worked fine for maybe 3 months until this problem suddenly started. Any ideas?

It's behaving like mine did when the SD card croaked. 32GB SanDisk here as well...first SD card I've ever had die on me. I was able to get it to read, one time, on my TF101 to rescue my photos...now it won't read anywhere. I'm not sure what to tell you, except that I'd back that card up pronto, just in case...

My SD card wouldn't stop doing it. I just gave with it. Uploaded all my music to Google Play, put the 16 GB card that the phone came with in there. All is well now. Haven't had a problem with the card in there yet but I rarely use it now anyways. Basically just there for backups

Well thanks for the responses, I already backed up the data that was on there. I can't find my receipt for it...any idea if Sandisk is good about replaced defective cards?
I went through four RMA replacement 64gb class 10 SanDisk cards, ate the $90 loss and spent $80 on the Samsung equivalent. It's faster and I have had zero problems with it. However, I used SanDisk cards for nearly a decade before those without any problems.
The SanDisk hi capacity cards seem to not work well in the lgog. They worked fine in my card readers, just not the lgog slot.

I also had this problem with a 32gb sandisk. I RMA'd it and it happens less frequently for the new one. I'd say it happens once every few weeks now instead.
It's your card. I haven't experienced this at all n I'm using a no name class 10 32gb card. I was looking scandisk card but luckily I read the reviews n they where all negative

[Q] Mounting Sandisk 64GB SD card doesn't work.

The phone will claim its checking the card & then claim the card has been removed.
Anyone else with a 64GB card have this issue? My Lower gig cards work fine.
My SanDisk 64 GB card works fine here. Hard reboot your phone.
Having same issue factory reset did nothing either. Even after this little ota
Backup card to PC. Format it, and see if that helps. If not, you may need a replacement.
My 64GB SanDisk is working fine. Just ordered a Samsung EVO 128GB, should be here tomorrow (oops, no later today) I think.
Like others said. Reformat it. I'd let the phone format it.
It happens sometimes. These cards easily get corrupted too because they often run a weak file system format like FAT or ExFAT. Sharing between PC and Phone is shaky too.
I like HTC phones because they support true USB Drive mounting which is less prone to issues IMHO and much faster too. MTP is awful.
Yea my sdcard is fubard, have to testdrive rebuild, it has lost all writing priveledges. This is all caused by my old piece of **** galaxy s4. ****ing thanks applesung

My Galaxy S5 corrupted my SD card and I noticed it when I tried to put it in the M8.
Yea it sucks. I think the internal write capabilities are ruined. Looks like I have to get in touch with SanDisk supposed to have a decent warranty
