[Q] S4 Google Play Edition can roam on Verizon LTE? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Well, being a T-Mobile customer (and preferring to stay one) I was interested in the fact that the new S4 Google Play edition seems to support the Verizon 700mhz LTE frequencies but is sold as an AT&T and T-Mobile device only.
NETWORK
Unlocked GSM/UMTS/HSPA+/LTE
GSM/EDGE/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
3G (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
4G LTE (700, 850, AWS, 1900 MHz)
So does this purport that the device is able to roam on Verizion's 4G LTE data network when there is no AT&T or T-Mobile network present?

It'd only be viable if there is a CDMA radio hidden somewhere in there as well. Otherwise you would have no voice service.

Verizon announced today that in 2014 there will be available LTE-only phones... phones sold with LTE and no CDMA radios as they have finished their LTE rollout nationwide. They also said they will flip on a switch to enable VoLTE ... Voice over LTE around the same time.
However, I really don't care about voice service, I just want Verizon LTE data roaming in all areas of the country where T-Mobile customers are seemingly in a blackhole datawise with 0G connections

Could you imagine the money to be made if a phone covered every network and frequency band? Somebody needs to do this lol

You cannot in anyway use Verizon 3g or 4g unless your devices imei is in their database regardless if it supports the frequencies . also there are sub divisions of the 700mhz band. Both att and Verizon have divisions in the 700mhz band

It does not support Verizon LTE. There are multiple blocks within the 700mhz spectrum, and they are NOT compatible. Verizon uses the 700mhz C-block, which is closer to 750mhz. It's actually 746-756 and 777-787.
AT&T uses the 700mhz B-block. This is 704-716, and 734-746. They are NOT compatible with each other. Phones have to be designed to either support B-block or C-block. There are no devices out currently that can support both as the carriers have a block between them. Qualcomm is lobbying congress to end that block, though this lobby may be pointless. Verizon is currently looking to sell their 700mhz block to AT&T. This would allow AT&T more room in the 700mhz band with the block removed, while Verizon would get more AWS spectrum support (dual down/uplingh for faster speeds). It would also allow Verizon to shed the provision that requires them to allow an unlocked device on their network (something that they hate).
Bottom line is that no, this phone is not compatible with Verizon LTE.

Verizon uses Band 13 and Band 4 for LTE while ATT uses Band 17 and Tmo uses Band 4 and Sprint uses Band 25 so All of the Carriers uses different bands. Eventually most of them will use Band 4 AWS.
The Nexus 4 can use LTE on hacked ROMs on Band 4 AWS

[Q] SGSII/i9100 on TMo USA with better than EDGE?

Looking for any insight to using the SGS2 on TMo and getting anything better than EDGE speeds.
As I understand it (via wikipedia) TMo has these bands:

So, what gives? Seems like the 2100 UMTS service should match up between the two. Is this an issue because TMo is somehow blocking the use of the unbranded phone on their system? If so, and on a much more advanced level, I'd think there'd be a way to make TMo think I'm using the PoS smartphone they gave me to use on their system... or am I smokin' that crackberry?
Needs both 1700 and 2100 if I remember correctly.

One is up and the other is down so you need both 1700 and 2100 to use T-Mobile's data network. No version of the SGS2 any where in the world supports T-Mobile's AWS bands. T-Mobile's getting a dual-core version of the Infuse in September that supports their bands.

What's the chance of one of those "Hercules"...SGS2 by another name apparently...having an antenna board that will drop into another SGS2?
I see a lot of brilliant software hacks and tweaks around here. Don't see a lot in the hardware realm, tho (like a new antenna board, for instance.) Is this not the place for that or is that at a completely unrealistic level of development?

You'll need an antenna engineer with a test chamber to tune the antenna. A lot of factors play into more than just fitting into it. You might have to play with different patterns depending on how much different the overall phone mechanics and materials are from Hercules to the SGS2.

[Q] Radio?

I know the Jetstream was designed to be run on AT&T and Rogers, but I am curious if it is possible to flash a radio to enable usage of T-Mobile's HSPA network, much like the Samsung Galaxy Note has been enabled to, as seen here.
Can any of the amazing Devs out there shed some light on this?

jdavis08, Simple answer is yes. It is a standard 2G / 3G / LTE (AT&T / AWS band) phone. So you can use it on ANY 2G / 3G / LTE network with a SIM. But you may need to break the SIM Lock on any handset.
Just wanted to clarify. The Jetstream is 2G/3G/LTE /capable, 2G (GSM): 850/900/1800/1900MHz, 3G (UMTS/HSPA): 850/1900/2100, and LTE: 700mhz & AWS-1700/2100.
Currently, T-Mobile only uses the AWS for their HSPA+ network, not LTE (from what I understand, AWS will be transitioned for LTE and 1900mhz refarmed for 3G/4G early 2013) - and if I'm not mistaken, the HSPA+ is only supported by the "3G" band of this device, not the "LTE"
So - to make a long story short. I am a T-Mobile subscriber with various "4G" phones from T-Mobile. Their 4G only works if the phone has a radio with AWS for HSPA as T-Mobile (unlike AT&T) does not use the 1900mhz for their HSPA (yet). I own this tablet.. It has been SIM unlocked and it simply does not get anything above EDGE... and I live near and visit major cities in Washington State, Seattle/Bellevue/Tacoma, which definitely have TMo's 4G coverage.
I know I should just cool my jets until TMo rolls out the network upgrades, as I have no interest in joining AT&T. I was just curious if there was some way to "trick" the phone to use the AWS frequencies for HSPA, like the Galaxy Note has been made to do as the radio specs are identical.
I know that the Note was enabled to do this by flashing another radio. Support is minimal for the Jetstream these days... so I was just reaching out.

Logging Cell Tower w/ Frequency Band

Is there an app or command to log the different frequency bands available in an area? I'm thinking of getting a Galaxy Note 2, but the Note 2 doesn't support the 1700MHz frequency band, and I'm on T-mobile. Any way to figure out if the new phone will get reception, other than just plonking down ~$650 and hoping for the best?

You will have EDGE coverage anywhere, but I wouldn't buy an expensive new phone that doesn't support 3G for your carrier.
Why aren't you buying via T-Mobile, that does support their speeds?

First, because the phone is at least $70 more expensive on T-mobile's store.
Second, even that version of the phone does not do HSPA+ over 1700 MHz (it's actually the same N7100 you see everywhere). The trick is, T-mobile is supposedly switching all of their 1700-band HSPA+ towers to 1900 band, partly in preparation for their LTE rollout and partly because that's the only way they'll be able to get the iPhone to work with their network, but they haven't gotten it done everywhere and I'm concerned that I'll plop down ~$600 on a phone that only gets 2G speeds at work.

You had me worried so I looked it up. According to the news sources I found, T-Mobile is converting it's 1900 2g towers to support HSPA+. So for the present the current 3G network is not in danger. I suppose my Amaze will continue working for a while!
Where did you see a report that they are changing out the 1700 band HSPA+ towers?

Almost every tech news site that discusses the 1900 band refarming mentions that the reason is to re-deploy 1700 for LTE (that, and to get the iPhone running on T-mobile because Apple outright refuses to make the iPhone pentaband for some reason). It's a fairly easy Google away.

AT&T LTE bands vs. Developer Edition LTE bands

So since AT&T uses bands 4 & 17 for LTE (700/1700/2100MHz) and according to the Developers edition has 700/850/1900MHz then to me that looks like the Developers edition can only access AT&Ts 700 LTE bands.
Is this correct?
Seems to be correct.. but im not a expert when it comes to network bands

This would mean it supports 700, 850, 1700, 1900 and 2100. AWS refers to Band 4, which is 1700 for uplink and 2100 for downlink. Unless something in AT&T's white sheet is missing, the Developer's edition supports two extra bands that are used in some European and Asian countries.

Finally someone can give me a sensible answer! :thumbup:I read from another thread that T-mobile LTE works on AWS 1700/2100 but the unlocked new one does not have the two frequencies in LTE. Apparently, that was a wrong info. I am going to move to DC and hopefully my dev. new one will work on T-mobile LTE in DC.

T-Mobile's LTE frequency is on Band 4, so as far as using the Developers Edition on T-Mobile USA, you will certainly get LTE as long as T-Mobile has it running in the area, and default to 3G/HSPA+ since it does support PCS band (1900 MHz), albeit this coverage may suffer as the phone is missing the AWS band for UMTS.

Their device identifier code will certainly be different, so HTC will make sure you can't run the Developer Edition's RUU for the AT&T phone. As far as custom ROM is concerned, I don't see why you can't use the same ROM as long as it's not touching any other partition other than the /system.

Yes... I hope I won't travel around next year and will stay in DC most of the time. I am currently using Straight Talk with my Droid DNA, and it has good coverage, hspa+ most of the time. But Straight Talk does not have LTE. I am so ready to feel the speed of LTE! But it seems like if I would be outside of DC, my LTE experience will drop to 2G.... Anyway, at least I have the freedom to change back to Straight Talk if I have to.

I had straight talk before I went to att. The difference is mind blowing. Even on just h+ it blows straight talk out of the water 3 fold. I don't regret leaving straight talk one bit

I was looking at the Google Play Edition S4 on the Play Store: [Can't link outside post yet but go to the Google Play Store]
According to the Specs it uses the same frequency ranges that Verizon uses:
Network
Unlocked GSM/UMTS/HSPA+/LTE
GSM/EDGE/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
3G (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
4G LTE (700, 850, AWS, 1900 MHz)
Would this thing work on Verizon with their sim card? Sorry in advance for sounding like a noob.

It will (presumably) work on Verizon when they do Voice over LTE... but until then, yes, it lacks a CDMA radio which means it probably won't be of use for VZW.
I knew it wouldn't work on non-CDMA networks but what about the LTE side of the house? Verizon uses 700 Mhz and 1700/2100 Mhz LTE bands for 4G. I could live without 3G for a phone that could connect to any carriers LTE freqs.

Might be fine for 4G data over LTE, but will probably be a paperweight as far as calls are concerned unless you want to go the VOIP route... not to mention you'd be SOL anywhere there's no 4G coverage. Basically there would be no fallback, you'd either have 4G data, or nothing.
I think AT&T and VZ use different ends of the 700mhz spectrum, so even if the phone somehow got authenticated onto the VZ network, the radio/antennae for AT&T's 700mhz may not work on VZ's.
