[Q] Just got my S4, Where do I begin? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I want to root it, unlock it, install custom recovery, and start installing custom ROMs. So where do I begin in that aspect? I would like to start tonight so I don't start installing things and then start the process.
I've read that the bootloader can't be unlocked, but it can be bypassed. Is that correct? If so, what is the exact process to go about that?
I would assume if I'm unlocking the bootloader, it's a one shot including root. Yes?
Anyway, just help me out where to go. The only thing I've seen in the VZW sections is a sticky that tells you how to root the device. I wanted to get all three down, Root, Recovery and Bootloader.

this does all 3.....

[TOOL](ROOT)(RECOVERY) i545 all-in-one root + recovery installer Updated 6-3-13

Thank you to both of you! I have it rooted and a recovery installed. I believe that means I've bypassed the bootloader, correct?
Is there anyway to tell this worked properly other than having a recovery on my phone?

You can download any app on google play that requires root. If it asks for root permissions and it works, then you have successfully rooted your phone. Or you can download this app to check for root: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=en

Questions about rooting and such.

When ICS is released will I have to root it again? I was looking at the guides and there is a 1 click root tool and then there is a long tutorial of how to do it. Do they both give the same root? Is one safer than the other? Is there a way to brick your phone at all? When following one tutorial in this section it said to install a custom recovery. Wouldn't I first need to get root for that? I already unlocked the bootloader and just want to get a few answers before I continue. Coming from an iPhone so this stuff is all new to me. I find jailbreaking a lot easier, could mess up and restart over again no problem.
Thanks.

Yes this stuff is more complicated than jailbreaking, familiarize yourself by reading bible faq and all the stuff in the [Read Me First]
NO, follow the directions, first bootloader, then custom recovery, then root. very unlikely to brick your phone since we do not have s-off yet. Follow the long guides, they give better results. and you will learn more.
Don't worry about ICS yet. We will give directions once we know more about it later on...There will probably be roms that are rooted and someone will probably find a way to rooted if they've made it harder...We cannot answer things about future software that we don't even have on this phone yet.
I disagree with the above post.
Rooting is EASY. Specially on this phone.
You more than likely will NOT brick your device.. only way is if you just..... idk.. do something super strange.. these phones don't brick that easy.
Unlock bootloader, then use the script.
You will now have clockwork recovery mod. On that, click "backup."
- With that backup if anything happens to your phone, just restore it, and that's it.
After doing that, flash the ROM you like.. it'll all be fine.

Thanks for the reply. And the guide in this section said that Step 3 was install a custom recovery and then root. So that is why I was confused. And that's a relief I was afraid of bricking. Thanks for all the information and help. I've read most of the guides, but some things I was unclear about.
Thanks.

I had an iphone and there was one program that was universal everyone would download click one button and jailbreak...When I switched over to the N1 it was not so easy and I had a hard time at first...I had to learn what all the terms meant, I wasn't even familiar with what a rom was!!! It's easy to root anything if you know what your doing. This phone is more complicated than rooting for example a samsung. and flashing kernels etc. samsungs do not need to unlock bootloaders to root kernels etc.

one click root tool does not do anything but root. you have to unlock bootloader and install custom recovery, please read the read me section. I have bolded this in red... this is nothing like iphone jailbreaking.
installing custom recovery and rooting has never been easier. all you have to do is run some script by connecting a cable to your phone and hitting the mouse button twice

Hi Blax,
You will probably want to go through adb here is a link to follow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601942 that is for installing cwm or you can install twrp which can be found in the developement thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1414
There are a number of good roms out there now which can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1523719
I did run cm9 for a bit but it had a quirky black screen when rotating that I didn't like. Two of my favorites are androwook and virtuous. If you get stuck there is lots of help in the dev forum, just make sure you search before you ask because chances are the question has been answered multiple times, I have learned from experience if it happens to you it has probably happened at least 10 other times All I can suggest is do a lot of reading first, chances are your questions will be answered before you ask....
Also if your doing any adb, it is best to have the file you are working with in the adb directory, this way you don't have to use any paths...
Thanks Gage_Hero does installing cwm have to be done through adb or can i just unlock and install TWRP recovery through goo manager since im already rooted but unlocked

I honestly can't say yes or no, I haven't used twrp, before you do, I would search the twrp thread and see if anyone has taken the path. Best to find out before you end up in a wreck If I am trying something new I always research it first and if you don't find a definitive answer, ask one of the twrp dev's they will tell you for sure if it is possible. I am not trying to scare you but I have seen people do things that they didn't check out first then have to go through alot of trouble to get back when they could have done a couple of extra steps and been up and running in minutes not days.

confused rooting my phone

I have the HTC Rezound with the recently released O.T.A. ICS from Verizon. My objective is to root the phone and kill all of the B.S. bloatware that Verizon feels they must add to the phone. I have posted before to ask how to do this and everyone says root the phone and kill the apk files or alternatively Root the phone and download Rom Toolbox then kill it from there. I have gone through and followed the "[GUIDE] Super-noob guide to unlocking, rooting, and flashing Ziggys kernel" to the 'T' up until its time to load the Kernel. I do not want to change the Kernel so my qquestion is:
If i have gone through the process of rooting my phone it should be rooted at this point. However when I run Root Check Basic it tells me "Sorry this device does not have proper root access." I do not understand why. In order to get full root access am i going to have to continue with installing the Kernel.
Is there anybody who could help me. I am missing.

1. Wrong section. Please post things like this in the general or q&a sections, not flaming, just telling you for future references.
2. If your device has an unlocked bootloader, flash amon ra recovery or twrp and go to the dev menu and it will say something like give Su permissions or root or whatever, just click that.
3. Profit.
4. You're welcome.
To root you should download the latest version of SuperSU zip file, and flash it with anon RA recovery.

This is a great community.
You do not need to root your phone to get rid of the bloatware, you can keep your phone stock unrooted and debloat it yourself and not have to worry about flashing anything. To disable go to menu>apps and after clicking an app you see the choice of disabling.
SuperSU not working
I don't know why i cant get this to work. I have flashed the amon recovery to my phone. Followed these steps:
1)Flash AmonRa Recovery.
2) Boot into AmonRa Recovery.
3) Scroll to and enter the Developer menu.
4) Scroll to install Su. DO NOT INSTALL THE ENG (Unguarded) one. Use the other one.
5) Confirm this, when it is finished, go ahead and reboot. You should be rooted.
Downloaded the SuperSU from google play and select install. after a few minutes it comes back and says the SU binert needs updated, I select continue. then after about a minute it says installation failed.
What am i missing? I have followed everything to e "t" I don't get it
More help please.

Flash in recovery. If you have already flashed a custom recovery(amon ra) then pull your battery, hold out for 3 seconds, insert battery, hold vol down and power at same time til bootloader boots, select recovery, select flash zip menu, select sdcard(assuming you placed flashed zip on external sdcard), select file, press power to confirm, reboot when done. Now you should be rooted.

[Q] Can't Figure Out How to Root

I need help with rooting my phone. I have gone to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1884#tutorial
I first started out with Samsung Galaxy Note II Kit. But, the update said I needed to do something about unlocking my boot loader, so I went to the Adam Outtler page. But, he says in the first post that this won't work If you do it with an OTA update after January 18, 2012. Well, I didn't notice that first anyways and tried Odin, and all it would do mainly was fail, or setup connection would take forever, and even Casual says:
/system/bin/sh: su: not found
noroot
DEVICE IS NOT ROOTED! ROOT YOUR DEVICE! Install any VRALJB ROM --Adam Outler
What I think I need to do is uninstall the OTA update, but most people I have seen do it through a rooted phone, but I don't have one yet. I have no idea what to do, and I am really confused and don't want to hard brick or screw up my phone. Could anyone help me with this? I am sorry if I am being stupid about this, but the only thing I ever rooted was a NOOK tablet which was simple.
P.S. I am sorry but if anyone respond between the times of 10am-12pm today, and 4pm-12am today, I will not be able to respond due to work arrangements I have for today.
First confirm the baseband: System Settings > About Phone > Baseband. If it shows VRALL4, you have the update and need to use the updated root and unlock method here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
Just go slowly and follow the directions (measure twice and cut once), its pretty easy. Good luck.
start at section 1 of my guide...then if youwant to unlock follow adams thread. make sure to use his latest "jailbreak" method(the one linked in my guide).
If you on the latest software from Verizon, just use Adams guide. That's all I did. Need any help let me know!
Or just follow this dude here.

[Q] Rooted my ME7 Build but cannot get CWM recovery working ...

Warning: Total Noob here.
Just rooted my VZW S4 following the instructions for the ME7 build on the forums here with no problems. Installed "ROM Manager" via Play store and went thru the steps of flashing CWM. The app reports, under "Recovery Setup" that my current recovery is ClockworkMod 6.0.3.2.
BUT, when I "Reboot into Recovery" ... it always go to the default "Android System Recovery <3e>"
How can I get CWM running instead?
Thanks
You can't install a custom recovery on ME7 yet. It's been well covered here on XDA.

Thanks. As someone new to Android and the rooting community, is there an explanation on the whys and hows of CWM (e.g. what is required for it to work, why it requires more than rooted phone, how it should best be used, etc...)?
Just trying to figure out how everything plays together and what I should and shouldn't do.

The bootloader on this phone is locked, meaning you will need an exploit to bypass it in order to install a custom recovery. The loki method that was previously working has been patched by the most recent update, eliminating the only publicly known hole to install custom recovery. Without an exploit to bypass or an unlocking method we have no way to install a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP, without these it makes it nigh on impossible to install a custom ROM.
Anyone else please correct me if I am wrong but this was my understanding of the current state of things.
Your 100% correct sir...

Make sure you are very specific on letters that need to be caps.
For example; when you type cd /mnt/extSdCard......make sure the S and C are caps or it will not work.
First time I did it I put in extSdcard and not extSdCard and I got the file not found error.
That should do the trick.

Um, Linux command line is often case sensitive. The question above wasn't about custom recoveries, it was simply referring to rooting ME7 which has long been possible.

That command line is in fact case sensitive. So you're wrong. The previous post was about using the root exploit method which has been done already, not unlocking the bootloader.
