[Q] Is there a way to get my VZW S4 GPS to work in Ireland (Europe)? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am planning on hooking my S4 up to O2 or Vodafone when I get there with a Talk/SMS plan, but maybe no data.
Will this phone be able to lock in with GPS without having a data plan?
I realize I will need an app that has the maps cached on my phone, any reccommendations on which ones or if this is possible with Google Maps?
Thanks, guys.

Sygic. It is a paid app and costs a bit, though.

I could be wrong but I don't think you have to have a data plan to use GPS. Here's the reason behind my response:
My neighbor has been asking if he can use an unactivated iPhone as a speedometer in his 1930 Model A. At first, I said no, then researched and found mixed responses. So this morning I removed the sim from my S4 and drove to work with a speedometer app I had previously downloaded. To my suprise, it worked.

Try removing your sim card and navigating. That'd answer your question.

You do not need a data plan to use the standalone GPS functionality. If AGPS data is old it might take longer for a fix, but that's about it. It's the maps and software that you'd need to be cached/stored locally.
As proof, here is an amusing screenshot for you, and no, it's not a GPS glitch.

anyone have any experience with one of these free GPS apps?

^ This. That should fix it, make sure Wallet is updated too.
Well also I just gave google wallet a call about using the prepaid card. It turns out they are having issues with evo users and have shut down the service for all new activeations. The really nice guy on the phone did not have an ETA on the fix however. Just an fyi

This might explain why I get a "error adding card" for the prepaid card. Was hoping I didn't bust anything.

Activate this device

Has anyone used this option in the settings? It gives you a day old usage from minutes to data. The only thing I noticed is that it labels minutes as megabytes. Ha

Why did they call this 'Activate this device'?? Never looked at it until now, MB glitch is kind of funny though. Especially since the data usage is listed in kb!
I've used it and what it does is refresh your PRL and firmware and tries to talk with Sprint to refresh tour activation settings. Once it does it displays all your plan data.

It's funny because its entirely different from Wireless and Networks > Usage.
I guess it's their to force an activation if hands free fails, and they just needed to put something in there if the phone IS active already.

Well the usage of android is not the best way to check usage and even says on it, the one you see in the activation is what sprint sees

Is your wifi constantly downloading?

When I'm in wifi the download arrow is constantly blinking. On for a sec then off. I don't have any push accounts. When on just 3g it doesn't do that at all, no data transfered unless I open a app or so something. It's murdering battery constantly connecting. I downloaded network traffic to try and see what is usually the data but it just shows "system". Using "system pannel". The data transfers are only at a few KB/s speeds so it's not large data files.
I've tried force closing all apps and it doesn't do anything. I have downloaded no apps that need constant sync. Gmail sync is stopped.

Do you use YouTube and do you have pre loading option on?

Cool I didn't even know that existed. But no, that option is unchecked.
I'll do a factory reset if needed but I don't it to come to that.
The data speeds are miniscule so it's like some odd transfer or authentication.

Now that you mention it, mine seems to be downloading quite a bit on Wi-Fi as well. My battery life is pretty good and it doesn't seem to be hurting anything. So I'm not worried about it. But just wanted to let you know mine does that too when I'm on Wi-Fi.

[SOLVED] Play Store New Feature?

Hi guys...I'm from the GT-I9100G forum......I'm running the latest cm9 on my phone...
Ok, back to my topic...When updating apps, it only downloads for a few percent as shown in Play Store...

"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
But in my notifications drawer, it fills up very fast and the update is completed in a short while...faster then expected...but my apps still get updated magically!
It has been like this for many times...tried searching butI don't know what to search for...lol...so anyone else aware about this? My hypothesis is that Play Store only downloads the necessary files to 'patch' the existing apks...Is this possible?
Yes, you are right, actually. The Play Store now only downloads new content for each app, instead of downloading the entire app over again. Makes sense, especially for larger apps, like Death Rally, which is a 50MB initial download. VERY useful update for people who spend a lot of time on their mobile networks (not everybody has 4G or 4G LTE service available, or phones with those capabilities).
I noticed this behavior on my phone, and coincidentally read it online the next day on a random news post.
Wow...great feature......still remember the title of the news?kinda interested...

Methinks the new Google maps is misbehaving.

Self explanatory. Anyone else experiencing this?

There are a few threads about this in both Q and A as well as General. It could be Maps caching the area or other apps that are using the GPS.
Edit: Here's one from a little while back with something that worked for the OP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2334342&highlight=maps
I had this problem too. Maps would always be one of the top three consumers of my battery, even though I never used it. I app quarantined it.
I think Greenify would work as well if you still want to use Maps.
Zero problems here, doesn't even show in battery stats. I'm on stock unrooted.

Op same thing here
It's used 4% of my battery and I haven't even opened the maps app. Running modded version of CM10 with working IR and GPS
Swyped from my VZW SGS 4
it happens when i use Google Now. i end up killing the maps after using it. i even have location turned off.
Greenify works well for this.
Destroying my battery today after I reflashed last night. Ended up uninstalling maps. Guess I'll just install it when I need it...
