Android 4.3 Leaked for Play Edition S4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I was just reading some news this morning when I saw that a fully functional version of 4.3, the next version of jelly bean, was leaked for the Google play edition of the s4! Pretty exciting!

One of the many reasons I LOVE the Android environment! My S4 comes in next week and I Can't wait for this!

I CANNOT WAIT for them to port this over to the Verizon GS4. I have been waiting for proper BLE support for so so so long...

So...when this Google edition S4 comes out...are we going to basically be able to have it on our normal s4 phones?

There's already a port in the development section of the 4.2.2 build (which I assume will ship on the GE S4). With some tweaking it looks to be a solid rom.
So, yes!

Pardon my ignorance (and being too lazy to search for the answer ).
BLE is Bluetooth Low Energy, right? So, in practice, what benefit will that give? Is it just something to help decrease battery usage? Does BT really use that much battery, when, say for example, you're using it to stream music to your car's stereo or something?

It means lower energy requirements on the device (like smartwatch) end.

Right. So, if you leave your phone connected to a smart watch or a BT headset all day, how much faster does it use the battery? Past experience makes me think keeping a BT connection alive - and even using it for something persistent like streaming music - doesn't really burn THAT much juice. So, what I'm really wondering is how much BLE is really going to help?
e.g. let's say I have my phone streaming music from the local SD card all day. If I use a cord from the headphone jack to the receiver, let's say the phone will run for 10 hours on a charge. If I do the same thing except have it stream over regular BT to the receiver, it seems like (from my experience, it would probably last at least 9 hours - maybe longer. So, if it was using BLE instead of regular BT, how long would it last?
My normal usage for this is having my phone hooked up to a BT intercom mounted on my helmet, when I'm riding my motorcycle, and listening to music while I'm riding. I haven't gone on a long ride since I got my S4, but with my old Rezound, my phone would go just about all day on a charge, while streaming music from my SD over BT pretty much the whole time. Which is to say, it lasted almost as long while streaming over BT as it did if it was not playing music at all. That makes me think that current BT doesn't consume very much power.
So, like I said, it makes me wonder how much real world benefit will actually come from BLE.

Will be keeping an eye out for this...

The Google edition and play edition are the same thing, you get it from the play store so some people call it the play edition. Yeah there really isn't much of a difference which is disappointing. I hope that they are going to somehow add or enable more features when they officially announce 4.3

Port...
It's already been ported to the I9505. I don't think a port to our SCH-i545 would be very difficult (although I'm not a developer).

I tried my hand and couldnt get it to boot. I know others who have it booting but are stuck with no data. I think there are either new hardware libs required or perhaps a new radio.
Either way it will be some work to get it running.

Ubuntu Developer Preview DNA Compatibility

Anyone know if sideloading the Ubuntu Developer Preview would work with CWM on our phone?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBJ7U3omGps
We need to get a working CM build before we can do that. Currently, the N4 and GN builds are using a CM kernel as a base for the Ubuntu Dev preview. Theoretically, we can build something that boots (since we do have a booting CM build) it would lack a ton of things though such as voice and data.
If someone knows a bit more info, feel free to correct me.
The developer preview is limited in these functionalities anyway as far as I'm aware

After watching several videos on Ubuntu, I'm both excited to try it, and little confused. In almost all videos, it looks almost exactly like Android. The task bar looks the same, it pulls down the same way, the icons look basically the same.
Don't get me wrong, I love having options, but it doesn't seem to be very unique.
Any thoughts on this?

There are several differences. First of all, the thing you will most readily notice is that there are not button/hardware or otherwise for the ubuntu phone OS, it uses gestures similar to the blackberry 10 OS. In some instances this is better at other times, it is nice to have a button. In the long term, your benefit will be the ability to have a larger screen on a smaller device since you won't have to have a longer device to accomadate the buttons.
From a more technical standpoint, using pure linux removes some of the more contentious parts of android like the use of Java. Some of which may provide a faster user experience on the same hardware if Ubuntu can manage to ditch xorg. You could also, argue that the app availability and scalability of ubuntu is greater than android. In other words, soon you'll be able to walk around with a linux device that you can plug into a monitor and blu-tooth keyboard and have a full fledge desktop all from the same hardware -- Carry one device - access it anywhere and in whatever capacity you need it at that time.
Put it on my galaxy nexus it's not really all that it is fun to play with but I had problems with calls. DNA is much better but stock android will make this the best device all day. If only it had the front stereo speakers powered by beats this phone would never need to be upgraded

S4 features on Note 2?

I know that S Health wouldn't work because of the sensors. I'm pretty sure S Drive and Air Gesture will get ported to the N2.
I'm wondering about the Dual Camera mode or Smart Pause, will that be a possibility on ours or is that a hardware issue? Anything in particular you guys want to see ported?

I don't get this kinda logic. Google has to build and test the next update, sometimes the update has bugs. Would you want a new update just because it's new and have problems with it? I wouldn't. I'd rather samsung wait and finalize their update, while waiting for Google to fix any problems.
Samsung still has to build and test their rom. To me as long as I get the update I'm fine. If I wanted updates that badly I'd be with the nexus 4

So if im understanding what youre saying youd like a still broken 4.2.2 update? Its not fixed yet, its been months now since it was released. I think we take the L on this one and move on
Stock 4.2.2 crippled my N7, so much so that i literally gave it away. At this point, as ashamed as I am to say it...samsung has done more to fix it than google has
Verizon recently jumped the gnex from whatever it was on straight to 4.2.2. Chances are we wont see a 4.2.2 OTA or leak before Android 5 (or w.e its called) is announced in May. 4.2.2 was meant to be a foundation for 5, so why not skip the 4.2 update, which, IMO doesnt bring much thats meaningful to the table anyway and go straight for the next version?

I fully expect the next Android increment to be 5.0.x. Also yes 4.2 added quick reply to the notification shade so I would like the latest 4.2 release which is 4.2.2.
I'm not sure what problems you're having on your Nexus 7, but 4.2.2 fixed the only known one which was Bluetooth audio streaming acting wierd. That was resolved and all is well.

Hopefully they upgrade the Verizon variant too. I am new to VZN (came from Sprint) and from what I read/heard the updates come late if at all.
I would love to use the finger hover feature on the s4 with my note 2. Doesn't seem like it would be tough since the s-pen code probably looks for data from the pen and ignores fingers which is likely more complex. I personally have waited for tablets to add this ability for things like menus on non mobile pages so if this update does happen on the note line I might consider the note 10.1 over a nexus 10 or a 4th gen ipad.
I know the s-pen does the same thing but I personally find the tip is difficult to depress at angles and using it for drawing is basically impossible since the screen position sensor resolution isnt quite fine enough for precise pixel selection.
Half the people, including those on the forum probably dont even know half of the features the n2 even come with.
For instance, on a list of people (sms, phome, contacts), you can press on a contact and slide left to text or right to call. One more exampke are the s-pen gestures....sigh....

Alternate Kernel Choice AOSP/SAMMY w/ stweaks style sound app

I don't know if anyone is using this kernel yet but I have been using it for two days now and loving it. It was made for the n7105 but has been running perfectly on my vzw gnote2. It also has an app you download from the market "like" stweaks that lets you adjust cpu/gpu settings as well as sound including turning up in call mic volume. Just scroll down to the downloads section and download the n7105 versions for either tw(sammy) or aosp, I have tested both.
Only, issue so far is that the eq in the app (uneak) isn't working but I use noozxoide for that. Apparently the eq isn't working on the n7105 either so don't fill up his thread with compliants. Believe me, you will be impressed with the sound improvements using the kernel (neak) the app (uneak) and noozxoide from google play.
Find the original thread here. Be sure to read the entire op, there is a lot of useful information there.
I in no way take any credit for this, just wanted to share.
Just to be clear, you're flashing a non-Verizon kernel onto your Verizon Galaxy Note 2 and you aren't running into any issues? Is that correct?
I exclude that equalizer issue as you said it isn't working on the other phones either.

Correct, been running it for two days with no problems, no lock ups no sods no nothing. Running fast and smooth. Better sound than stweaks and perseus imo.
Well, that's awesome. Kind of curious whats up with that. In the past kernels for the international variants required "porting" to the Verizon/AT&T etc phones. Wonder why not with this one?
If it were possible to flash kernels from all the other variants on our Verizon Note 2's that would open a lot of doors for options.

Best kernel yet [aosp & tw versions]
WOW. Just came across this kernel randomly by searching google for "verizon note 2 aosp kernel" and HOLY ****E! This is the best kernel I have ever run on my phone by far!! This thread needs to come back to life and people need to get on this. I'm running this with carbon currently and am getting the best battery life I ever have using the muti-core mod app made by the dev along with the uneak engine control app. Don't be skurred...even though they don't SAY Verizon, these kernels run fine with Verizon, as long as you follow the links in the OP under N7105/T889/I317 LTE RELEASES:. These kernels were just updated on June 7, so they are FRESHHHH.
Seriously, give this a try. And make sure to use the apps linked to in the uNeak dev's OP.

There have been quite a few reports of people flashing N7105, T-Mobile, and AT&T kernels on the i605 with no issues. You cannot flash Sprint kernels because sprint writes /data on /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 instead of on /dev/block/mmcblk0p16.
So using a Sprint kernel would most likely bootloop you, it may not but from what I've read it most likely will, and I'm unsure if the N7100 is fair game or not, I have been looking through kernels lately and have found one on the N7100 that I am going to try later and see if it works of if it causes issues like I think it will.
That leaves us 3 other Note 2's kernels to play with though aside from our own!

Giving this kernel a bump because it's awesome. The audio tuning that can be done inside the uNeak app is unreal. I'm the same way. Once I have an app installed and I play with it for a few minutes and will actually keep it, I have no issues with donating a few bucks to the Dev. After all, they did this on their own time and it keeps development going. I actually prefer apps that have a trial version rather than apps that force you to buy and then you only have 15 minutes to get a refund (Damn you Google Play Store Refund Policy). My poor bank statement is littered with App Store purchases of different Dev Apps. Spouse just looks at the statement and usually asks....what the hell is this and what is it for? I just lift my phone up and that's the end of the conversation.

I've purchased about every xda dev app I've found. Lol. Use maybe one or two. Came in here to say that I am also a big fan of this kernel. Mixed with the app and you have a winner.

2.1 is working great. The best part to me is the app, it makes tweaking a snap.

4.2 Evo LTE w/ Sense 5?

Just came across this article, figured I'd share it with you all. Seems reassuring.

It seems pretty legit to me. But I've been wrong in judgement before. The fact that we only get 4.2 is odd. Not sure the big differences between 4.2 and 4.2.2
I hope it's true. Thx for the info.

no problem
Trusted HTC leaker/developed LlabTooFer said that the Jewel was going to get 4.2.2 and Sense 5 a few months back.
The only phone in the HTC One X generation not getting Sense 5, 4.2.2 was the HTC One S, which was already confirmed by HTC.

I did see that this week somewhere.
If that happens, it would make it sooo much easier to port because I wouldn't need to resize anything...

I was hoping it would make it easier to port 4.2.2 but I thought the kernel would still be some kind of issue.
Hopefully this brings Sense development back to life for the Evo LTE. I'm not impressed with the One tbh, and never liked Touchwiz. Sprint also still doesn't have 4G of any kind in my area. Verizon might be my next jump.
I guess the more we are hearing about it, the closer we are ! *crosses fingers

To port AOSP? The only thing that would change is that they would update the blobs. And that's about it.

No I meant sense 5 4.2.2. Not sure why they are keeping us at 4.2. Aosp is great, but it lacks a few simple features I use often. Plus the sense keyboard is so much better than Google's

I'm sure they are referring to android 4.2.2 not 4.2

The promises flow, yet the actions are not fulfilled....
Well, that's encouraging, at least. I'm on the Sense 5 port right now and absolutely love it. I don't use BT so really the only thing that would be handy if it was fixed would be issue with the Instagram accessing my camera.

Basically all third party apps can't access the camera for some reason on this ROM.... (Vine, Snapchat, Instagram)
I forced myself to go back to MeanBean just for Fouth of July so I can video the fireworks. After I was done, I flashed Sense 5 right away lol.
The last time I tried the Sense 5 port, it was fun. But as you all are saying, I use my social media apps a lot, especially Instagram as I am a photographer. So I had to go back to Viper.
I played with AOSP and loved the multiple users feature. I could manage all of my social media accounts from my phone, but the fact that there's no animated .gif support in stock android killed me, as I use those a lot also. Hoping that this update answers both of my problems.

I posted a fix. Search my recent post history. If you try to use the Instagram video your camera will crash however the camera for pictures still works.

MultiWindow - is it growing on you?

So for the first few months I've had this thing I turned off almost all touchwiz bells and whistles. Bad memories from previously owned samsung devices.
Anywho I've recently been doing a lot of Youtubing and am finding multiwindow very very helpful (I'm mainly interested in the audio). Anyone else found a us for it?
How about the other stuff like air *?

I'm not sure if you'd consider this a "use" but multi-window is/was a major factor in my decision to run CM on my S4!
Cool. CM supports multiwin?

I have been using multi Window for a long time s3 rooms had it to. I use my phone often at work for real work. Reading prints and calculator at the same time, sending emails and reviewing a doc to make sure I am correct.

Nope that's only for TW no way of easily porting that over and since cm is for many different devices... Let's just say it would be a massive nuclear pain in the ass to even attempt to port it over... Not to mention it would almost certainly be illegal because of patents and probably have to dirty hack with samsung manufacturer code signatures.

No, I find multiwin to be annoying, I run CM to NOT have any TouchWiz stuff, most of which I don't need or want.
CM does everything I want and/or need so I don't miss any of the TouchWiz annoyances.... err, I mean, features.
