[Q] Need Advice on my new smartphone and my sollution - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys!
This being my first thread here, I hope it is in the right section
Here is my problem
I am looking to buy a new smartphone, and came up with the Sone Xperia ZR, its just around my budget (did not buy it yet, still looking around)
specs wise it is very good, but however there is one drawback, it has 8 Gb internal, (can be extended tough)
I think nowadays 8Gigs is like, nothing..
so my possible sollution was this,
I was going to get an sd card for it, install apps on my phones internal memory but install HD games on the sd card with apps2sd (the one that does not require root)
also movies and music... go to the sd card
what do you think, is this realistic and will it work? I think for normal apps about 4.5(?) gigs should be enough as most of them don't take alof of space, and I am not planning to install 200 apps anyway
Regards

U will have better performence if u intall all in internal mem.
Sd for music and vidz

Stupid question about memory size?

Hi All,
There seem to be several different Galaxy S III boards here so I just picked one at random (if it's the wrong place would somebody be good enough to move it to the correct place? Thanks)
I was in a phone shop here in the UK the other day asking about the SIII, and specifically the differences between the three types 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB the salesman said instead of getting one of the bigger ones, I should just get the 16GB model and buy a larger sd, I said that isn't how it worked, but he called another guy over who 100% agreed with him. Still not convinced I came home and had a quick sniff around on-line. This did not help clarify things, there seems to be just as much confusion out there.
Can I ask the experts here at XDA to give a definitave answer on this.
Thanks.
~S
Added later to clarify: I currently have a rooted HTC Desire with a 4GB a2sd partition. Even though the a2sd partition is practally empty the phone keeps complaining that I don't have enough space to install/update things. Although there are thing I want installed that aren't because of this it isn't a HUGE problem, but it's happening more and more as apps get bigger and bigger.
I'm not a big gamer (I pay some but not that frequently), I am a big app nut though. Yes 16GB is more than enough space for me right now, and I know there are options to move some files elsewhere, but if these options are as unreliable as a2sd am I going to be stuck for space again in 12 - 18 months time like I am now?
If you are not a gamer, 16gb model should fit well for daily usage.

You can always use the mod internal2external by Mattiadj in developnent section. Root is required.

If u are a gamer and u don lik to root ur phone( love stock) thn u should go for 32 or 64gb..
If u are a gamer and u lik rooting then u can go for 16gb version +64gb SD card.
If u are a regualr user..without gaming..16gb is sufficient.
Well since the phone has an SD slot you really can just buy a 16GB phone and buy a 64GB SD card..

You can only install apps on internal memory on the S3 also apps can also only use internal memory, which is why people said if you are a mobile gamer to get the 32 or 64GB version.
If you are just a normal user the 16GB will be absolutely fine, just use an sd card, I would say the store staff were half right, they probably don't know we can't install apps to sd.

I best his confusing RAM with non-volatile storage...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Game apps themselves don't use that much data, but it's the game data which can be massive. 9mm itself has about 2gb of data.
Game data can be moved to external storage so even if you are a gamer, 16gb is still good enough. I use 'gl to sd' from the play store which allows me to move data to the external card. There are other options as well, like 'directory bind'.

Clarification.
Hi,
Just added this to the OP to (hopefully) clarify a little:
I currently have a rooted HTC Desire with a 4GB a2sd partition. Even though the a2sd partition is practically empty the phone keeps complaining that I don't have enough space to install/update things. Although there are thing I want installed that aren't because of this, it isn't a HUGE problem, but it's happening more and more as apps get bigger and bigger.
I'm not a big gamer (I play some but not that frequently), I am a big app nut though. Yes 16GB is more than enough space for me right now, and I know there are options to move some files elsewhere if needed, but if these options are as unreliable as a2sd am I going to be stuck for space again in 12 - 18 months time like I am now?

Anybody want to add anything else?
Yes app2sd sucks a bit, I'm using something somehow similar, but more reliable (at least for my opinion)(also additional ext4 partition [20gb], but only mounted at /sdcard/Android to have the game data somewhere else and also because ext4 is way better for such big folders than messy fat32 or exfat).
But I would say go at least for the 32 gb, I'm not that heavy gamer, but I have some high-end games installed and the space is pretty tight at my 16gb device (if iwouldn't have put it to another place and also because I got some other stuff on it which I haven't moved yet).
Yes all is movable somehow, but why should you if you can get more space from the beginning.
16gb are for sure ok and I'm still happy with the device the same way i would with more internal, but I would have taken at least 32gb if it has been available when I bought the device.

so this is the reason they have 16 and 32g models. lock app installs to physical storage so people don't buy large SD cards and rather buy the larger 32gb or 64gb models.
too bad i didn't know this or i would of bought the 32gb.. i figured i could get 16gb and use sd card for extra apps but based on reading it looks like it requires hacking or apps that make symlinks..
why bother putting an SD slot if they're going to restrict what you can put on it.

Is it possible to fool the Amaze to do this?

Is it possible to fool the Amaze to show the SD card as the internal storage and use it as internal storage? What about the 14GB internal SD to be in place of the 2GB internal storage and the SD card to be in place of the 14GB internal SD, so that removing the SD card doesn't impair the system.
I want 32 GB for games, not that crappy 2GB internal storage I have. There are apps that link the files to the internal storage, but I want a better solution (the one I listed above)

What you want is an apple device which has that cramped up memory which in my opinion sucks... See android have 2gb of internal storage for apps because our apps are created to be able to save most of the memory onto the SD Card... If u want 32gb of memory for games ill recommend to get an iPod touch that way u will save your phones battery... I only support ipods, iPhones are just ridiculous trying to keep up with android which is not working...

You might as well just use apps2sd
@ted619
No wonder my sister's 16GB Iphone 4S get's slow when she put too many apps on her phone. She will be back with android soon

I don't like apple devices as iOS is a locked operating system. Its like living in a communist country. I want more space for gaming as I am a gamer. Someone modded the Note II to do that, so I was wondering for the Amaze. I have bought many games on Google Play and I, in no way, want to spend twice for the same game on the iPod, plus Apple overprice their ridiculous products (I know Samsung does so, too, but at least they give more freedom and features).
One 2 GB game like NOVA 3, Modern Combat 3, Amazing Spiderman, or Dark Knight Rises will fill it up, then you are left with insufficient space.
I have found an experimental fix as idk if removing the external sd would crash the system:

Not sure if this is what you're lookin for. But I've read THIS thread a while back. It's only for GameLoft games.
You won't be able to download it from the Play Store so you'll have to retrieve and install it manually but it still works.

How do you cope with 4GB of storage

how do you guys cope with 4gig of storage because people these days are downloading games 100+mb in size if there big ones and full albums
i dont think it was smart of sony for 8GB nand they should of upped it to 16gb giving a reasonable 10/12GB
Buy an sd card 4 is not enough
We don't cope with a 4gb storage. I have a 16gb sd card and I bought it for like 15 euros.

no you can't
however i can say that (if i hadn't shooted an entire hour of HD video and i weren't using dual boot) the internel memory of my xperia S would be used for 1GB..
and this with all the programs i need installed

use usb otg....works perfectly...xda has tutorial to run games thru flash drives too!
Its so simple! Use otg for songs and then play only one game (big one) at a time after completing delete it!
It can be even simpler - playing games on a 3.5inch screen is a facepalm, and keep only the music and videos that you REALLY listen to and watch.
~2GB of storage left for media and 1.7GB for apps
Use usb mounter or some like that
Buy a usb to vga cable
Add old pc screen to vga
Add mouse + BT keyboard
And use otg with a 300GB HDD
Thats hoe i use my XU
As true game phone

Hi,
My Observations:
I am currently using Class 10 ultra and I could able to play the big games like, NFS, FIFA, GTA etc.. with out any lag.
Not sure about other games as I have not played on my device.
Coming to the ultra and extreme pro, as you know an advanced version will always give you the better performance than older ones (unless there is defect... my analysis ).
Basically we(at least me) look for speedy memory cards because we have less internal space on our device.. In order to play big games, we might need to swap the memories, where your external sd card becomes internal memory. Usually Internal memories built using SSD tech which are much faster than the External cards. To match up with the speeds we will go for a higher speed memory cards like class 10.
Another example is camera, we can have captured images stored in external sd card. So here again speed matters to capture the images faster (like in burst mode).
This analysis is from my readings, If I am wrong on any point please feel free to correct me.
It is ultimately you to decide to go with which card.

As of I know,
nope, you cant if you want to play games which are bigger in size say >1GB. As you need more internal memory to save the game into your internal memory.
I did not find any apps or methods to swap memories with out root. Try searching in google, if you can find any.
We need to root our phone as we have to edit some files from the system folder (system files) which can be only possible if you have root permissions. You can gain root permissions by rooting your device.
Just updating to 4.2.1 will not give you root access, but if you install any pre-rooted roms through CWM(recovery) will give you root access.
Rooting your device will void your warranty (anyways clean unroot and clean uninstall of custom ROM might be useful to gain warranty again, I am not sure about this as I never tried it, i just saw people writing this on forums).

8gb internal, enough?

Hi!
Will be the 8gb internal memory enough for some apps and ocasionally games (moves to sd if can)?
What is standard app size for lollipop? (i.e. facebook, instagram or something)

with a bit clean up of apps you dont need (oem apps), you have about 1,8-2 gb of free storage....
at the moment i have a few installed apps (like ebay, amazon, dropbox and so on.... about 13 apps) and have 1,3 gb free storage...
its okay... but root & link2sd would make the whole thing easier
btw. sry for my bad english

it depends on the app you want to move to sd... i would say about 30-50% of the app size u can move to sd card...
all my apps i have added are about 600mb ... and at the moment i have about 1,3 gb of free storage...
I hope there will be a good root solution, since 8GB is not enough at all. My Xperia V has also 8GB (mid-range device from 2012! WTF Sony?!) and I suffered a lot, even if I used bloatware-free system (CyanogenMod), until I found a very useful guide which helped to re-partition my internal memory and increased my data partition from 2 to 4GB. I hope something similar could be done with M4 too in the future, or at least Link2sd, but we will need root, deadly.
In Vietnamese market, we get the Sony M4 aqua dual with 8Gb! We are all suffering a lots, mostly from those who want to play games with big data.
8 Gigs would be enough if they didn't put so much crap on it. Buy 16 Gig version if you have a chance.
I also sold my 8GB version and bought a new one from Amazon.fr with 16GB (dual-sim). Much much better...
I have one from the last 15 days and i'm very disapointed with it.
The phone already acuses lack of memory and said to uninstall apk and i already took of a lot of stuff from vodafone.
And there are a lot of bugs also.
The SD card is always disconecting, after only reboot everything stays ok without do nothing more.
