HTC is really turning me away with the lack of SD card slot, non removable battery, and now this. Yea, I'm sure our talented devs will be able to overcome this obstacle, but when will HTC stop trying to make their devices more and more secure!!?? I had bought nothing but HTC phones for the last 7 years! A few months back though I decided to make my white Evo LTE (Also have a black one that I pre-ordered) a backup phone and purchase a Note 2, since the HTC One didn't impress me and I had new phone fever, which I always catch every 10-14 months. This was a big change for me! I've been using nothing but HTC since my WinMo days, and HTC was the only brand Android phone I've owned!! I was shocked at how easy Samsung is to root. After rooting, I searched for hours to see if there was anything else that I needed to do before flashing. I'm so used to worrying about achieving S-Off that it just seemed to quick and easy to already be done, and I was just certain that I had to be missing something! I had heard that Samsung doesn't lock down their phones like HTC does, but just had to make sure before moving on. Anyway, I honestly expected to really miss HTC and quickly regret my purchase. I have to say though, the Note 2 is by far my favorite Android phone that I've owned! Still though, I'm really hoping to see HTC announce a phone with a mid 5" display, SD card slot, AND a removable battery!! I've read some rumors about upcoming phones, and I've already got my hopes up! I think HTC giving Verizon the J Butterfly (Droid DNA) was a Huge mistake!! HTC has gotta start putting their phones on EVERY carrier! Not only that, but they've gotta give the customers the features that they want! Lastly, put an end to this locking bootloaders and making OTA's more difficult to share/flash!! If the carrier wants to lock the bootloader, then let them do it (like Verizon and AT&T both have done previously)!! I switched from the Evo LTE to the GS4 and haven't regretted it for a second. The One looks like a really nice phone, but I've decided that I'm done with HTC for good. The GS4 is ridiculously easy to root and it's so nice not having to mess around with s-off and different hboots and all the other extra crap that comes with HTC phones.

Not a Samsung fan-boy by any means, however, after a long relationship with HTC, I decided to try the GS4. Very Happy!
Still have my LTE as a media player.
My main gripe with Samsung and there amoled screens is the blue tint, I cannot stand it. And as much as HTC has been letting me down more and more, I can't deal with how awful the colors are on the Samsung screens.

I've had every htc device dating back to the 6700 apache. To the evo lte. Lots in between Wm to android. Looks like this is the end for me. I'm jumping ship on my upgrade in Feb if dev can't get a work around. No SD and no removable battery already left bad feelings. This just is the steam on the pile of poop

So a couple days ago we found out that the HTC thunderbolt had a locked bootloader which was surprising since HTC has always been very largely supported by the community, a lot of people said it was Verizons douchbaggery. Now it appears the HTC Incredible S, the unlocked handset from HTC released in Europe also has a locked bootloader. This is extremely dissapointing.( like the droidx and atrix from moto, which still have not been cracked). The chances that this new Evo 3ds bootloader are locked, is high and frankly the only thing keeping me with HTC is the community and their support but this is a slap to the face. There hardware cpu,gpu,displays,cameras etc suck compared to Samsung or Motorola only their build quality is great. But if this new Evo is locked down I'm done with HTC!

Also word on the street was the G2 was supposed to be unrootable also, that didn't last too long.
This really means nothing, because as it has been in the past, so shall it be in the future. Bootloaders are just a door that many dev's are waiting to just kick in, so saying its locked means jack. They are just waiting to break it so their legend can live on.....If this keeps you from buying it, oh well. I know for a fact there will be thousands of others who will buy it, starting with me.

tbolt aquired full s-off and perma root and can now flash unsigned...yada yada...i dont see the 3d being a problem

Yup, the shift has the same locked bootloader and signed update images that the Evo, Incredible and every other HTC phone has. On top of that the sd card was locked out from the hboot as well.

CPU gpu? Scorpion chip set over clocks easily to 2.0ghz. Screen? Qhd. Camera? HTC just went with new software programing and new optics for much better pictures. The evo 3d will be far from locked down and its a solid phone. Get the one year old nexus s then lol

Honestly, I don't think it will come as locked down as the TBolt and Inc S...but even if it does, I'm still going to buy it. The TBolt fell to perma root in, what, 4 or 5 days, if that long?
With the devs we have here, even if it does come locked down, it'll be open within a week or so. I hate to see HTC doing the Moto thing, but I'm not concerned about the future of custom ROMs/Kernels on the E3D.

Hopefully this gains steam here at XDA.
On one hand I can understand why they might do this. I mean people are still riding with their G1s despite the fact that it is beyond outdated tech. But the dev community keeps it alive and well.
Also these companies do have a responsibility to their shareholders to say well we do lock our devices down as best we can to protect the bottom dollar (basically saying we want to force people who keep up with tech to upgrade as much as possible.
On the flipside of it all, you can clearly see how the dev community has helped HTC since their WinMo days. I know we are but a small subset of their user base, but our dollars count nonetheless. And when we let what the devs are doing influence our phone purchasing power
(which I know I do because I chose an Evo over an Epic because I felt what was going on over here was just more multi faceted (sense, AOSP, blur, and other options) than what was going on with the Epic)
But these companies KNOW what we are doing to their phones just as much as these carriers know. They don't want us to remove their bloatware because that is money. But we strive to remove it anyway and they still might not care because we still pay our monthly fees.
So I take locked bootloaders with a grain of salt. Android will ALWAYS be open and there is nothing that these companies can do to stop that. Once these companies notice the miss sales and such, then they will take a less noticable stance to it all. But in the meanwhile, I expect the Evo 3D to be cracked possibly hours after it is released.

im pretty sure the evo 3d will get cracked but my friend has a droid2 and it still hasnt been cracked after this long. its his first android phone and because i cant change the kernel for him, his out of box experience with the droid2 and his first android is a horrible experience and now he wants an iphone instead.
being a tech guy, most of my friends come to me for recommendations and never will i recommend a phone to anyone with a locked bootloader. (unless its been cracked) motorola just lost alot of business, with the release of the atrix, i tell people not to get it either.
just a few days ago, my friend from at&t was going to upgrade his phone. he had the option to choose the atrix or the htc inspire. despite the atrix having much better specs, i had to tell him to go with the inspire simply because the bootloader is not locked.

You're assuming that a JTAG footprint would be available. And sure, in most cases it is. However it's easily possible to make the non-factory CPU's just ignore it.
Besides, you're talking about permanently wiring something akin to a console modchip to the phone, which would be very impractical given how small these phones are.
And even then, they can throw down updates that would cause your phone to shut down or go into some limited use mode if the jtag port is being played with.
The xbox 360 and ps3 were suppose to be un-hackable. Everything is hackable as long as it is popular long enough. I am sure 6 months after it is released it will be rooted.

6 months is a long time for an Android phone. So if something comes along with similar specs that's easy to unlock, you might lose dev support. Also, there's nothing that says it might get unlocked. Look at the Moto phones...

Those motor phones were not locked... they were encrypted. That's the problem there.

I was just about to buy an Evo until I read about the Evo 3D, and so I have to suffer with my Touch Slow 2 for a little while longer...

So, even the Droid 2 has fallen to the root. Hopefully, Sprint and HTC won't make it quite so hard and will continue to turn mostly a blind eye a la the Evo, but either way, the Evo 3D just looks too cool to not get.

I'll cut to the chase cause i have a tendency to drag out the tiniest detail for ages, and i just wanna ask this XD
Basically, i have a Galaxy S II, and i love it, i started hacking it around august after owning it since the UK launch. I like to see myself as fairly competant when it comes to NOT permabricking it, however i still am hesitant to flash new roms, kernels cause of lingering fears.
So! What i came here to ask, is i am planning to purchase a second phone just for this reason, and have been looking at the Nexus One, HTC Desire, and original Galaxy S. Sadly i dont know much about the hacking scene of every other phone, so i dont really know what other choices there are.
Basically, what phone would you reccomend, even if i havent mentioned it, to buy purely for the community behind it?

The HTC Vision (aka the T-Mobile G2/Desire Z) has a great community of developers, cookers, and users. I was hesitant to start flashing custom ROMs initially after rooting as well. So I went back and hacked my old Motorola Cliq to test things out. I promise you if you can read and follow directions you'll have no problems flashing ROMs... there's a great variety of ROMs for the Vision and I expect in the not too distant future we'll also see Ice Cream Sandwich.

i would choose motorola droid(fav one) and nexus.I know droid is not in your list...

I would beg to differ on the previous HTC comment. I have an Evo. It's getting up in age, but I love it. There are tons of roms available for it, and even though development has slowed, you'd still be surprised at the amount of development happening. If you're looking for a phone solely for playing with, you'd have plenty of options with the Evo. You can get one fairly cheap, especially if you opt for one with a bad ESN - which you might as well since you won't be activating it.
It's nearly impossible to brick - the only way you could would be to pull the battery during a radio update.
Of course which phone you get depends on your wants and needs. Check out the development subforums for the devices you have in mind.

Nexus one and evo is different. Doesn't like HTC due to not giving out updates that they promised. Eg: HTC flyer is still in GB. If you wanted a true unbrickable phone, get a developers' phone. Instant update and super extremely easy to unlock. And it is fit for every update to give you full user experience.

The HD2 is an option too. Getting seriously old (but that much as dual core has still to be really used by the OS) but it sill has a lot of development going on, kernel and ROM wise...MIUI, CM7, Sense, WP7 and WinMo etc.
I'm in the process of getting a new phone and I have narrowed my choices down between the Galaxy Nexus and HTC Rezound.
Thoughts on any devices concerning speed, lag, usability, size, screen, glitches, rooting simplicity, rom selections, hacks and mods, etc.. will all be appreciated.

Well if you're looking for long term dev both will be good but from what I've seen, unless you get a GSM Nexus you won't see too much dev support as of now, fewer people are working with it. As far as performance both are practically on par. Just depends on wether you like aosp or sense.
Can't the rezound get stock android anyway?
There is currently no AOSP available for the rezound, though there are several devs working on it.

The Rezound is the better of the two, but I'd just wait another month for the SGS3, even if it is kinda fugly.
I have always loved android at heart.. while owning several Mac computers I also like apple, but I feel android is more capable in the end. Let me tell u qwikly why this is important. I love the ability to do whatever with android, but in the days (first several months) of the iPhone 4, there was no android that could touch it overall. Trust me, I had the evo and dinc. Loved end, the iPhone just did everything better. Then to 4S, however was a placeholder for GNex. Returned it, severely disappointed. Let my mom use my iPhone to travel over seas, borrowed her rezound, sold iPhone a week after she brought it back. Live my rezound. Only phone I've seen that can beat the iPhone. Alot claim their do, but I can tell u from experience rezoubd does.

Any android phone beats an apple product.
But I would personally go for the rezound. HTC sense is a very nice user interface. It's clean, pretty to look at and not boring like Samsung phones. Although, if and when cm9 comes out for the rezound, it will be my daily mainly because of battery life and total customization that can end up looking better than sense. Samsung phones freeze all the time according to several users I know.

Do you have a specific need to upgrade right now? Companies are coming out with the next generation of phones (One S/Incredible 4G, One X, Galaxy S3, etc.), and the benchmarks show that they pretty soundly beat the Nexus, Rezound, Razr, etc. If you can wait, I would try to go for one of those phones instead. I would have waited if it were an option. (Admittedly, with Verizon there's no telling how long those will take to be released.)
Overall I like the Rezound, I love the screen, but am disappointed at a number of its drawbacks.
On the plus side, you can unlock the bootloader easily, and you can get S-Off, so installing custom ROMs are quite feasible. On the down side, these steps are more convoluted than other phones.
While the screen is amazing, it will chew through your battery very quickly if you're using anything more than 30% brightness. If you're a heavy user, I wouldn't be surprised at around 10 hours of life with the stock battery.
While the phone comes with beats headphones, the Rezound seems to have some shielding issues. I get noise while playing music and downloading/uploading anything on either 3G or 4G (not an uncommon problem with the Rezound).
The screen size is ideal for me at 4.3", but the phone is a little chunky and can get quite hot in normal usage.
I'm happy with the phone thanks to the decent development going on, but do feel some regret in not being able to pick up one of the new upcoming phones.
I'm happy I choose my rezound. My friend who returned his for a nexus has much more problems I think he's on number 4 right now. His signal is atrocious compared to mine

I am lucky to have two lines; one with the Rezound and the other with the GNex. Both certainly have their strong points but what makes the difference is how you choose to use it. As for development, the Nexus will always have a leg up. Although it may not be as robust as the GSM Nexus there is definitely a solid Dev community for the LTE Nexus. You have many Roms to choose from and kernels, themes etc.... There is definitely something to be said for how easy the Nexus can be unlocked. In about five minutes after purchasing your Nexus you could be flashing your first Rom. This is not the case for the Rezound. There are a lot of steps, some of which are convoluted, to get the Rezound to be boot-loader unlocked with S-off. Once you have the Rezound unlocked it is a great phone with tons of possibilities. The Dev community for the Rezound does exist but certainly doesn't compare to the Nexus. As far as hardware goes the Rezound takes the lead. Here are a few of its advantages: up-gradable microSD card (I have the 64 GB Ultra), 1.5 GHz Dual-core processor, HTC Sense (depends on preference). For me personally I like both phones for different reasons. I don't believe I have ever hot-wired a phone before (Rezound) especially to get S-off but it is worth the hassle in the end. As a side note, S-off for the Rezound has only recently been achieved so that may up its value in terms of the development community. I love both of these phones but if asked outright I would say the Rezound is the "better" phone. If development is first on your list get the Nexus.

I'm not actually sure it's true that development is greater for the VZW Nexus. Not a perfect proxy but the number of threads and posts on the Rezound development forum dwarfs the Nexus.

I see. Then right now I would choose the Rezound over any other VZW phone. With ICS I suspect it will run pretty well for the next year. By the end of two years...
Also once you do get S-off or unlocked, the rest of the Rom installation process is pretty straightforward. So it is just a one time price you need to pay.

How is sense 4.0? That's a major reason I would like this device, and recently seeing that ics might not include 4.0 is the only reason I'm on the fence here.

So I have been thinking about what to new when I can get a new phone which should be able to happen in the next couple months. While I have like the 3D, I think it was a mistake to get something so different. None of the problems are because of the devs which have been great as always and I have been impressed at what has been done with as many problems as they have run into. So to end my monologue, I was hoping to get some advice from people with knowledge.
Lets pretend that every phone company had a phone that was exactly alike. Same specs, same look, same everything. Everything that is except the stuff that makes the companies different. So HTC has Sense on the phone. Samsung has touchwiz Etc. Who would you buy this phone from and why?
Basically trying to find out if there is one company that is easier to build ROMs for or if there is something one company does better than another. I have been on HTC since the Hero days and at one point loved Sense. Now though I feel Android has caught up with Sense in the overall function and feel of the phone. But I am still torn. If I leave Sense, there is no getting to try it out again later. But I also have never really used Touchwiz enough to know if there is something I am missing.
Maybe this turns into nothing of a question and it ends up being stupid that I asked it here. But what I am hoping is that I will learn something new about who actually makes the best phones to root.
I guess I should add. I realize I could possibly go the route of a Nexus but again I would be left with only vanilla Android. No chance to try Sense or something different. Is it worth going the Nexus route for all the ease that it will probably have but with no chance of a different look?

Yeah, after having the Pre before the 3VO, I'm wondering if I should go the Nexus route, too. It's the only thing that seems supported for the length of a contract. That's what gets me the most. If you buy a phone at release date, there should be FULL support (updates, etc) for the length of your contract, or at least have the knowledge of when support is expected to end. So where the M7 is looking promising, will it turn into a Pre or a 3VO? So now I don't know what to with my APR upgrade...
Same here been with HTC since the Hero. I think I am going to part ways though, doesn't seem to me that HTC is doing anything innovative or ground shattering for me to stay with them.
I'm probably going to upgrade to the Galaxy S4 when its released just to try something else.

I was thinking about Samsung but I didn't know if they were any better than HTC at releasing code. The SG4 will be interesting but the Note 2 is also very intriguing.
Nexus seems the safe route but doesn't seem to have the excitement surrounding it.

That's probably what I'll wind up doing. I love Sense. The size of the One is probably the max I want to carry around. A Note is like carrying a tablet in your pocket <insert joke here :laugh: > For some, that's cool, but after TWO digitzer replacements, I gotta be careful. Only other thing on the radar right now, for me, is the Optimus G, and I don't know a thing about its UI...
I don't know what's next for me but unless Sprint drastically upgrades their network in the next couple months then my next phone definitely won't be written Sprint.
Wimax is almost worthless these days. I can't hold a Wimax signal, even sitting at my desk. My city still hasn't even been mentioned for Sprint's LTE, and Sprint's 3G is not even usable around here.
So whatever my next phone turns out to be, it will probably be on T-Mobile this summer.
I'm pretty much done with HTC too. After getting screwed with this locked down Evo 3d that they refuse to support, I'm not buying another HTC phone. I'm either going with Samsung, LG, or Motorola.
There are way too many launchers out there for anyone to be worried about Sense or Touchwiz or whatever.
I have too talked with my parents about carrier switching. Sprint is nice, but... eh. If I stay, GNEX is the only way to go, if I leave, it'll be to T-Mobile and I'll be getting either a Gnex or a Sony Device, both great deving supporters.!

I've been doing a lot of research on both devices over the past few days since I'm out of work and have nothing better to do than apply for jobs and figure out which phone I'm going to get when it comes out. Super lame but there isn't much else to do when your back is shot to hell.
Anyway... It looks to me as if the GS4's mission is to drag other customers to Samsung. For example: steal HTC lovers and convince them to make the switch over to Samsung. I see this because GS4 is pushing FEATURES and things that, for example, the HTC One does not have. But that doesn't make the GS4 'better' than the HTC One. At least... not to me.
The HUGE difference is that the HTC One does NOT have the MicroSD card slot. I don't agree with that but yet it might be a good idea to finally move to cloud storage and get used to it? Either way, I came to the realization that the non-existent MicroSD card slot should not be a deal-breaker of any kind. Especially since you can grab a 32gb MSD for only $20 if you look in the right direction. So, if you think about it, there IS plenty of storage but it won't all be physically present. Kind of cool if you think about it.
Another HUGE difference is that the HTC One will not have an option for battery replacement, extended batteries, or anything alike. I believe that was to boost sales towards accessories and have everyone else (carriers and company's) jump on the same bandwagon. That's because there are now battery packs you can buy to carry around and charge your phone if you really need to. I think that's pretty awesome but I like the idea of carrying an actual backup battery with me instead of charging on the run.
BUT! That sexy casing sure as hell makes up for both of those "HUGE" or "don't really care" differences.
As for screen differences... who can tell which is better on such a small screen? Sure, if you know it just happens to have better specs than you can call it "better" or even "the best" but if the human eye can't even detect the difference than it really doesn't matter.
BUT! You better believe your eyes when you see the battery consumption suddenly plummet.
So why desire those better screen specs, that you won't even notice, and get less battery life? My guess is that you wouldn't...
So why desire all of those features that you will use, much like the rare 3D on few phones, but probably for about a month until you realize they are just a waste of space and a marketing scheme? My guess is that you wouldn't...
So why switch over to the Galaxy S4 of which you will be happy with for a while before you realize your regret on not purchasing the HTC One which is also released earlier so you could've been satisfied even earlier and not made ANY mistakes? My guess is that you wouldn't...
I've come to the conclusion that the S4 vs. One is all about personal preference and the battle becomes a draw. Specs are pretty much the same depending on where you live, what carrier you have, and your own personal wish-list. Samsung did one hell of a job marketing a phone that hasn't had an official release date yet though! It had me wondering which phone I really want. The octacore sounds great but think about how new that technology is, how it make work, if it really is worth it, and that it is just a new idea to processing in *hopes* that it'll provide a little bit more power and better memory management.
I could go on and on about all of the differences, marketing schemes, etc... But I want to see what everyone else is saying (typing) since I don't have THAT MUCH time to spend reading every little detail on the two phones.
What do you guys/gals think?

I never needed to replace my battery on the Evo 3D, and I'm still using the same 16 GB card that I had in it. I doubt I'd miss either omission.

The most comprehensive review/analysis of the HTC One to date. If you want to know EVERYTHING about the One just have a read. Highest award ever given to a smartphone by them. That pretty much certifies it as LEGIT.
I say wait... None of the next gen are really pummeling the current gen flagships.
If I had to choose this year, the SGS 4 under contract or the Dev edition HTC One, off contract.
The one. Sense 5 is great and I'm really liking the dual speakers. I love Samsung Tvs but nor their phones. I could care less about a removable battery or the microsd card slot.

Same here, having stuck with HTC since the Hero, I'm really leaning towards the One.
I'm still undecided. I really hate AMOLED screens.. They have some sort of tint compared to LCD. And i hate that Samsung phones feel cheap and light.
The build of the HTC One is awesome but I alway have cases on my phone. I'm super clumsy.. I drop my phone about twice a week... No joke. I've never had to get a new battery for an HTC phone. SD card slot shouldn't be a problem if I can get 32gb. I've never taken out the memory card out my EVOLTE.
As far as HTC.. I feel they are more of a hassle to root than Samsung. So that is making me want to switch to Samsung. But then again, I've used Sense for 5yrs now and like it.. It's gonna suck to switch.
The things that are most important to me are battery life, screen quality and performance. I'm sure as far as performance there won't be any "real life" differences.
I'm on Sprint and one of those will be my next phone. The possibility of updated Sprint Nexus is also on my mind.. Although farfetched.

I think I am gonna go with s4. I freakin love sense and the build quality of my HTC phones bit I have to say the HTC tends to have more connectivity issues as far as what I have seen.
I can tell u my EVO LTE is pretty inconsistent when it comes to signal and connecting. I don't think it is entirely the network either because even at the house on WiFi my connection seems to hang quite often at the same time I have problems I pick up my tablet which runs off the same WiFi and it runs just fine.
Another reason is Samsung galaxy has such a big following if I try the s4 and don't like it it will be much easier to find me a person willing to swap their HTC for my galaxy rather than the other way around. I doubt anyone will trade my HTC one for a galaxy if I have the same frustrating issues with it.
The freakin black HTC one is one of the sexiest, nice looking phones I have seen in a while though so who knows. My family plan will be out of contract on all 3 lines at the end of the year so I'm not renewing this quarter I will have plenty of time to make a decision. I don't know that I am going to be staying with sprint.

Very interesting posts guys/gals. I appreciate all of the responses. I've been with HTC for quite a while as well. My first was the HTC Hero which, in my opinion, was one of the worst smartphones ever made. Then I went with the EVO 3D which treated me very well up until needing a replacement. I went through 8 of those phones and each replacement was worse than the previous. My batteries started getting shot, my phone would turn off randomly and never come back on, and the digitizer constantly went out. I would've been on my 9th until I decided to grab the LTE. I've only had one issue with this phone which was the service cutting out and never coming back on. I then got it replaced for free so no complaints.
The build of the LTE I think is very poor. Out of the box there was already cosmetic damage and I refuse to use cases since I never drop my phone's anymore. *knock on forum* I'm just having a really hard time deciding what I want to do. I'll probably end up with the HTC One but it'd be nice to switch it up too.
But making the switch either leaves me satisfied for two years or in deep regret for two years.
This is a tough one. The only reason I wanted the S3 was for 1 more gig of RAM. But with both of the new phones sporting quad-core and 2gb of RAM then I almost might as well stick with HTC.

It's kind of early to judge battery life since the test phones are all pre- production. Many times software will fix things.
I've been really happy with the lte but may wait and see what the next nexus service is and then decide if I'll stay with sprint.
The htc one has received better results in the rf testing than the lte did. So that is encouraging. Should mean better connections for calls and data.

Personally, after being on Sense, I feel like TouchWiz (Samsung's Sense) is designed for children who still need to ask their parents permission for playdates. Totally ugly and way too colorful.
Also, after using Sense 5, I don't ever want to use another OS. It is incredibly enjoyable.
Now think about if we had all the One X and Evo devs working together - I can't imagine anyone would need more options than that.
I am getting a One before May because I am so impressed with Sense on my EVO and I love HTC.

Yeah. Saw that a bit ago. The One only beat it in one category though. However, the differences are that big either. But both of the phones don't have the best battery life.

I just don't get it. All of the EVO's were different. Even the newest One =P I wish they would've stuck with the EVO name though. Assuming the EVO is pretty much done. The HTC One would've made a great EVO. But whatever. Now when people ask what kind of phone I have I'll say "that One phone." Soft humor.
