New Software Update for Verizon GS4 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I hooked my 16GB GS4 up to my computer a few hours ago to do some backup because I am replacing it with the 32GB S4 (arriving Wednesday). The Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant did an update first, then it showed I had an update available for the phone itself. It took about an 1 1/2 - 2 hours (ridiculous I know) and it is finally done. Looking for changes, biggest I see is ability to move apps to SD Card. Can't remember what my storage was before, but maybe this is the update to give that little bit of extra space too? I assume those went hand in hand as 1 update. Any one else got this yet? Any other changes you see?

I just read last night that there is some fear that Vnz patched the boot loader. My 32gb arrives today and hope I have a chance to opt out so I can root. What's the new version number?

Go to about phone and screen shot us the info plz

Count me as one very interested in this. Mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow and want to preserve the root option if I can.

I just downloaded the update via the installer as well but did not install. Where does this get saved on my phone?

From what I can tell there is nothing that will stop someone from making this device able to root. It'll just take some time. I'd there's a will there's an XDA.

My S4 comes tomorrow. Hopefully someone will let us know if the current root exploits work on the OTA.

It should be in the /cache partition. You'll need root access to get at it if I'm not mistaken.

Per kies...
Current firmware version: PDA:MDK / PHONE:MDK / CSC:MDK (VZW)
Latest firmware version: PDA:ME7 / PHONE: ME7 / CSC:ME7 (VZW)
Edit: there is a tmpD385.tmp on my PC which had appeared when kies started "downloading file for firmware upgrade" and is now at 971,207KB in size. Progress bar shows 41%
EDIT2: I now have a I545VRUAME7_I545VZWAME7_I545VRUAME7_HOME.tar.md5 which is being flashed.

Just got my 32gig S4 yesterday. fired it up and rooted it with no issues..
However didnt see any notice for an update. Even if they have one, you have to accept the OTA.. just dont.

And there is already a Kernel out for ME7 which would make me believe that root is already possible on the new update. This update is obtainable with a custom recovery installed, correct?

because its extension is ENC2 I would think that is the encoded copy... you might not be able to extract.

Just got it loaded, and I'm working, so I haven't had time to really do anything with it yet.. One thing I did notice... see the "Secure boot status" in the AFTER picture? that wasn't there before the upgrade. Could this be the KNOX update?

I don't have a SIM in my S4 right now, so I used Kies on my PC to update via USB, rather than OTA.
Also, this update does include Apps 2 SD

Link to Droid Eris OTA MR4 download

Here is the official MR4 update Verizon released for the Eris. This is for the people who haven't got the update yet and can't wait. And for the people who don't know how to install it (like myself).
Click to Download
Instructions:
1.) Move it to the root folder of your SD card.
2.) Rename it "update.zip"
3.) Turn your phone off
4.) Turn it back on by pressing "Vol-Up & End/Power" until the phone starts.
5.) Wait 15 seconds -- Then press "Vol-Up & End/Power again"
6.) You should get a short menu, one entry of which will say something about "sdcard:update.zip"; choose that.
This update is keyed to only specific releases, namely leak-V3 and OTA2.1. It will abort on 1.5, leaks V1 & V2, and the original root-ROM.
Credit goes to Eris User
So I know this has been asked before, but I figure this is a safe place to ask again...
This is basically just a radio update, no? If it's more than that, what else is it? I'm wondering if I should put it on my wife's phone to cure some of the bugs that she's always complaining about.

New radio, new kernel, updated (Java) framework components, update HTC Sense apps - lots of fixes.
Here is a XDA post which details what gets patched or updated in the (July 2010) OTA
Probably a lot of minor bugfixes for things that lots of people never experience.

Could someone post a screen of the software information with the new RUU, please? I was going to call VZW and wanted to make sure I had the right information when they were going to crosscheck my numbers with theirs.
Thanks
this is going to be another one of my famous rookie questions.... but will this mess up my root?

Ok I go the update this morning via OTA and tried to install it & It came back with a ! inside a triangle Failed. I am Root only still running stock rom but have the updated over clock kernel. Is this my problem as to why it wont update? Also can I manually install it and then just have to re push SU? Or will it take root out and I just have to re-root?
Or should I not even worry about it and just run another rom?
Is there a new link to this?
Has someone uploaded this to a different location?
Google isn't finding it for me on any forums.
I am having the same issue. Can someone upload this to the git hub site? I am trying to return my eris and get a new one

[Q] [Help] New update

Im trying to update to a new 2.2.2 update that bell just released for canadian users.
I download it, I press install, it reboots my phone into android recovery.
It begins to install the update, then it shows me this:
verifying current system...
assert failed: apply_patch_check ("/system/app/AccountAndSyncSettings.apk". "a bunch of numbers", "A bunch of numbers", E:Error in /cache/Blur_Version.0.37.4.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA.zip
(Status 7)
Installation Aborted.
Can anyone help? Its really frustrating not being able to update.
My phone was rooted, deodexed, and I flashed a few .zip's to it. I factory reset it before I attempted to do this update.
HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
This is the menu I'm in when I talk about "android recovery"
However, this is not my phone. This picture is just to jog your memory if you dont know what im talking about.

are we talking about 2.3.4 or what kind of update?
It means your phone is rooted and you need to do an SBF flash
Pretty sure that is the recovery screen. If I remember correctly if you touch above the search button it should take you into the recovery menu

He's talking about the update from Bell that came out today. Its similar to the 4.1.83 update from At&t
Sorry guys its the 2.2.2 update released for bell atrices (in canada)
There is no menu unfortunately.
It looks like the bottom portion of this image, there is no menu.
Try pressing the bottom left and right corners, should bring up that screen.
Cheers!
Since it's 43MB is size, I am guessing glad root or my util should be able to preserver root using frozenfish in /osh/sbin.
Downloading it now, Blur_Version.0.37.4.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA.zip in /cache, I'll upload it to my dropbox for folks when it's done.
Cheers!
How can those who have flashed 2.1.1 get this update?
You would need stock Bell firmware for an update to apply I would think. Probably not much different that what you have anyway, I'll see if I can nab the radio from it though.

Thanks so much. That brought up the screen.
However, my update failed. I'll post the exact error or PM you if I can't figure it out for myself.
Will that update be flashable via CWM? And where can I find your dropbox.

Mag
I'll post when I get it done.
Here you go:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23800522/Blur_Version.0.37.4.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA.zip
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23800522/Blur_Version.0.37.4.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA.crc
/cache/recovery/command = --update_package=CACHE:Blur_Version.0.37.4.MB860.BellMobility.en.CA.zip
Frozenfish works to get root access again, in fact your su and shsu binaries stay in the system folder, all you have to do is chmod 06755 /system/bin/shsu etc.
Cheers!

Well, if you are using a Bell Atrix in Canada and it's working right, then why not? How is unknown to me right now, the files are in the zip, might be able to do a swap in an sbf, not sure.
Just got 1850 in a speed test for upload indoors, fastest I've had yet, previous was ~1780, that could be a good reason.
Cheers!

I had the same error, I odexed my system and copied the zip and crc back to cache, and did the update again, it asked me if I wanted to install it, and as it was doing that I grabbed the command file from /cache/recovery and put it on my sdcard. So really, all you need to do is have those 3 files in /cache and reboot into android recovery and you should be good to go.
I am thinking that it's the patch files that need to have the original files in order to work.
Cheers!

Middle East
System version :65.1.21.XT910.PSHAsiaRetail.en.03

i tried it... but didnt succeed.
i added root and upgraded my Radio to U_03.1C.85P ... is it matter?
is there any methods other than OTA?
Updated successfully to this version. Anyone tried rooting it yet? I'm outside and not able to attempt to do so.
Yes, ur radio upgrade could cause the issue...
Failed on rooted motorola razr. I m on stock rom, rooted. Is that the reason i cant install de update?

Just read the information from moto site.. its nt an important update
Rooted and update applied successfully. I copied the update from /cache to the external sdcard (/sdcard-ext) and flashed using stock motorola recovery. Had backed up root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Re-rooted successfully.
The update was a letdown. No 2.3.6 love
Was rooted and updated to this.
BIG mistake.
Lost root as a result.
Current rooting methods were unsucessful.
Apparently this update fixes the invalid sim error as well as some enhancement to the camera, AF seems abit faster, colours appears to look more vibrant now.
Also included a copy of bejeweled 2.
Wish there is someway I could root it back.
I'm not sure if the OTA update had anything to do with it, but after it was applied, my headphone jack stopped working.
If someone is able to give this package to me, I'll be happy to add it into my ROMs thread under the OTAs.
Thanks!
Can anyone upload the middle east update for me?
Should the phone get unrooted before updating?
uhh i mean seriously no one saw the other threads about keeping root after an OTA update? try using voodoo ota rootkeeper before installing the update.
Weird...coz my phone is rooted and I updated, but nothing happened.
I don't think the update installation is affected by rooting. Its more likely that it checks the system files for inconsistencies with the original version. I got errors showing "build.prop". It turns out that I had edited my build prop with the supercharger tweaks.
I'm trying some stuff out now. Will update with the results.
In the meantime all those who successfully installed the update please give us your system config. Include any and every modification made to the system.
EDIT: Sorry guys, doesn't work for me. It keeps giving me an error in the stock moto recovery about tmp/package.zip.
Thanks!

After the upgrade, I think the Root is 'stuck' because I have rooted the phone a few days ago and everything was fine. Yesterday, after the OTA upgrade, my phone is at (Build Number) 6.5.1_73-SPD-IRD-21. This is (System version) 65.1.21.XT910.PSHAsiaRetail.en03 now.
After the upgrade, I discovered that any apps requesting for Superuser permission would be denied. Even in Root Explorer, the "Mount R/W" does not work anymore!
I have tried to Unroot using the DoomLord V1 Unroot script, but is also does not work. The Superuser app is now stuck and cannot be uninstalled or deleted.
Ginger Unroot also was denied Superuser permission when executed.
Another observation is that earlier rooted phone cannot be unrooted anymore. Tried using the DoomLord unroot v1 and the latest Ginger Unroot... SuperUser app is still there and denying all other Apps trying to gain SuperUser status... (except for applications which were allowed earlier before the upgrade).

Yes, JWR66Y is a very small update. There are no new features. It's purely a security update.

Can you go into your /cache folder and get the name of the zip file?
I got it just now. Wouldn't update because I'd changed Velvet.apk now I can't get it again.
EDIT:
Ah, nice it was in cache like someone mentioned above. It is indeed JWR66Y
EDIT 2:
Copied it to the internal, flashed in TWRP. It said patching, removed root, but failed on flashing recovery.
I'll upload the file in a moment.
OK. If you guys get the update again, please look in your /cache folder and give us the filename before you try to install it. Once we have the filename, we can provide the link to the file on Google's server. That way, if you can't get it again, it won't matter because you can just download the file directly. Thanks!
Check above
---------- Post added at 09:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 PM ----------
I couldn't sideload it using the stock recovery :/ It failed on "setperms"
I'll have to grab factory image and unpack it into a CWM zip at some point.
If anybody could make a zip for CWM thatd be awesome :good:
mine also fails at permissions - check this thread out seems to be figured out -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745781&page=53
a line needs to be changed to #set_perm(0, 0, 0544, "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh"); because of the way the daemon is in supersu if somebody could whip up a manta zip like the ones they have were set

Here's where the action is on this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413535&page=15
So I ended up making my own zip for CWM, changed the line I mentioned above and removed the asserts. Worked fine here but flash at your own risk. Flashed supersu 1.51 after flashing the update and answered No to fixing the recovery.
**Only use if you are on Google's stock JWR66V odex hasn't been tested with other "stock" roms

So, it appears that it's a small security update, it'll remove root, and I can expect to have problems with it with TWRP. Nice. Got it early this afternoon, will have to mess with getting it working later.

Dude, every OTA ever in history removes root and reflashes stock recovery. This isn't news. Just flash and then re-root. It's a Nexus. You can do that.

So I ended up making my own zip for CWM, changed the line I mentioned above and removed the asserts. Worked fine here but flash at your own risk. Flashed supersu 1.51 after flashing the update and answered No to fixing the recovery.

Is your phone modded? Does it have a customer recovery? In order for a device to install a completely stock factory ota update. Your device needs to beat a factory state

As the above guy says , you can't install update with a custom recovery . Just change your recovery mode to factory version and try to install it .
It was worked for me for a months before

Clearly the picture shows that it is the stock recovery, so I don't understand the last couple of comments about that...
OP: What update were you on? Did you download the system update from the phone? The first poster was right about changes made because changing some things in the system will create this problem on some phones. I would see if there is an RUU from HTC to update via the PC or via SD card (they don't sell that model here so not entirely sure which way they use for that model).

Have you tried updating through Kies? Sometimes Kies helps when OTA updates don't work.

Sounds like a corrupted or incomplete download then. Without knowing which version and/or region the phone is from, then no one can be of much further help. It's rare that this happens on phones that have never been modified, but it's not the first time. Typically it is resolved by just running the RUU, but it's quite possible there isn't one yet for that device and update. If you do not know the specifics of the phone, then it is best to set up fastboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790 and boot to the bootloader and while connected in Fastboot mode to run the command from a Command Prompt: fastboot getvar all and post the results (leave out the IMEI and serial numbers).
This MIGHT be what you need: http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-816/general/updates-htc-desire-816wdual-t2850329 - IF it is the correct region for where your phone was originally sold.
General outline for manual OTA install:
Make sure to have the correct CID and MID on your phone. (see: fastboot getvar all output for this info)
Make sure to have the correct Stock ROM version software on your phone.
Make sure to have the stock Recovery installed. (you already have this so skip)
Copy OTA file to SDCARD
Boot to Stock recovery and once at the triangle, press volume up + power to get the blue recovery menu. Then select ‘install from internal memory’ (or something like that) and find the file.
Update should install and your firmware and software should both match the version of the OTA Update.
I have NO idea if the xda link for the OTA is the correct one for your phone, so don't blame me if you don't research to see if it is the one you need and you mess up your phone. Good luck.
