re: Constant data usage.. on wifi and mobile - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

re: Constant data usage.. on wifi and mobile
I was using app after app to figure out why my data connection on wifi and mobile was always working..
I kept shutting down app after app too to find the offending one.
2 days later.. its the FUDGING GPS
and more specifically the check box was checked next to the "Wifi and mobile network location"..
Unchecked it and the data stopped..
Uncheck the box... and you will find better battery life... better yet.. turn off gps when not in use..
was wondering why my phone was losing soooo much battery when i was not using it.

Yes, allowing location to be determined using WiFi and network will eat up battery. Turning off gps when not in use really doesn't save any battery unless you have some rogue app that incessantly polls GPS.

E911 which all cellphones use now are easily traceable to within 100 feet. Even deactivated cell phones have 911 service. Every now and then the police knock on my door because the idiot boys next door fight with each other and use deactivated cell phones and call 911. I just point to their door.

Atrix wifi switches off

Ever since I've had my Atrix, the wifi randomly switches off. My question is: should I exchange my Atrix, or is there a way to fix this?

Unless it was enabled by default; no.

I think the Atrix's WiFi radio is just weak. My mom's iPhone gets 3 bars of WiFi across the house from my router, but my Atrix drops to two bars if I just go into the next room. My Atrix struggles to hold one bar across the house. It sucks, but then again, I am using the crappy router that comes with U-Verse.
I exchanged some PMs with a moto dev about this a few weeks ago. I have a weak wifi signal at work and it will drop if I start using marketplace or facebook extensively. Part of his/her PM:
The "bars" shown by the UI have pretty big margin of error but RSSI reading less then -80 pretty much puts link at the lowest end of the budget. Also that does not account for interference really because Wifi is simple technology. So if you are at -80 at a workplace that has tons of 2.4 RF you will have disconnects and many retransmissions. This is why using of the market place probably triggers something in IC because you have lots of data and error counters go up a lot.

If you're talking about a weak signal, there is nothing to do for that unless you increase your router's transmit power. If it drops, then go to wifi settings > menu capacitive button > wifi sleep policy > never.
I changed the wifi sleep policy and it still switches off randomly. The wifi will still switch off randomly even if I'm sitting right next to my wifi source.

Yeah the wifi still dies

For the sake of testing, try disabling all security to see if the wifi connection is ok or not while sitting next to your wireless router. Also, could you let us know what kind of wireless router you are using (make and model#), and the type of securtiy you aare using, e.g. WEP/WPA/WPA2&TKIP, etc?
I have tried on 3 different modems, the current one I'm using is a wireless router WGR614 V9 with wpa security, I tried switching it off and I still had the same problem. The other 2 where in encrypted and still disconnected me. I also have the problem at ATT hotspots.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
that's not good. If you're up for it, reflash with stock and try wifi with nothing installed. If you still get the disconnects then get a replacement.
What does reflashing to stock entail? Is it as easy as ODIN?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
download from moto here. I haven't done it, but it looks more safe/less painful than an SBF flash.
I'm already at the latest version, through all the updates I've always had the same problem. I'm not seeing a stock firmware download.

[Q] Turning Modem/Radio off

I just started a Masters of Geology program and needed to make money cuts everywhere.... the cell phone was an easy choice since I have wifi almost everywhere I go.
In the interest of battery life, does anyone know if there is a way to turn the cellular modem/radio off and leave the bluetooth, gps, and wifi modem on?
Thanks

I don't have a setting for that, at least not under Mobile Network Settings.
I suppose I should mention that I am running Bionix Frost 2.2.1 with kernal 2.6.32.9; I don't know if that would make a difference.
Thanks for the replies.

Battery + temperature on "edge" (1x network)

Hey guys,
I'm finding that when my phone is in an area with very poor data and goes to 1x mode that after a few minutes the phone will get very hot and it seems to drink battery like no one's business.
I'm wondering if there's a way to disable 1x at all? It's pretty much useless anyways these days the throughput isn't even enough to really even send / receive emails from my server let alone anything else.
I'm finding myself having to manually disable mobile data when I notice it's occurring (which I don't always). really the only way I notice is why my pocket starts getting warm =)
Thanks!
This also has been happening to me. In school a lot of my classes are in the basement and I get terrible reception.
Turn off Mobile data then?
Poor service and battery use have always gone hand in hand.
Set up a toggle to turn off your data connection at those times? You'll still get texts and phone calls.

I stated that I would do this in my first post but I also stated that I don't always notice it. It sucks to lose 30-50% of your battery life before you realize you're in power drain mode.
Does anyone know if I can just disable the 1X antenna completely (permanently) at all times?
Thanks!
If I'm not mistaken 1x is data roaming, so disabling the roam option in your data settings should eliminate it

1x is essentially 2g. EVDO is 3g.
You will know you are romaing when your signal bars have a triangle on top of them. That is the only roaming indicator.
When your on 1X your Phone Constantly tries to connect to 3G/LTE your battery ifs drained from your phone trying to connect to 3G

Couldn't find the options you're referring to under "mobile network settings"
you can change roaming mode - but none of these settings seems like it would work.

1x is not roaming. Its a very slow connection due to a poor connection.

The problem is I'm not doing it by choice this is on the stock ROM or any other Sense ROM I've tried (OMJ, Fresh, Stock Rejuv)

Wifi (not hotspot) insight needed

Is there any reason my phone says it has a strong wifi signal but it keeps dropping wifi and starts using verizon network instead?
background:
new JB basband rooted and unloxk with jailbreak method
that's it........
Thought there may be a JB vs L4 modem and rom issue (New at this...)
Thanks
Or it may be changing settings when one first gets the phone and doesn't read (not that there is a manual) about each setting first.
Is it dropping while the screen is on? There's a setting to turn off wifi when the screen is off

That's what I thought the problem was but I was wrong............
Turns out the phone jack in the kitchen died so the wife moved the phone into the office. Cut my wifi signal by half, so in those areas where it was iffy to begin with, it was switching to Verizon.
I think it is all solved........(but I thought that last time.

Well.....my laptop is at 9.8 mps and the phone is getting 5 mps so there is some problem but signal strength says very strong.
When is the last time you rebooted your router?
As a pre-emptive strike, I am not interested in other devices work fine and there is no reason to because of that. They aren't using the same wifi card and they all behave differently with their own little quirks. Point in case, I have had my PC lose wifi, but my phone is fine and a router reboot clears it up.
Is it while MMS messaging? I've noticed my phone switches to 3g/4g while sending MMS, even if wifi is on.
Compared the wifes s3 side by side with my note and they dropped together so did a factory reset of the router and all is well.
Thanks for the efforts.....

I can understand that. Seeing as how we don't have root yet, I cannot tell you in-depth way around to reset app and wifi calling. Only way I can think is that app has faulty install or something obviously broke in running. For temp, have you restarted the device then tried? How good is location/satellite service (GPS only, battery saver)? If so, I would recommend (sadly) a factory reset and redo the wifi calling. If something still broke and error still persists, then maybe faulty hardware at this point. I had to factory reset first day I got it due to issue with brightness not sensing correctly. Everything works now. Ill keep looking at it but for now, only way is through restriction by phone not root yet.
That's the thing haha to have a solution before I have to FR the device. GPS is good in this area maybe is address...

I know, no root limits answers we can give obviously haha. Try address but I don't think that would cause FC in location query. The app should have just told you no good, not FC. That's why I can see this is frustrating haha. I have no FC and could not reproduce by wrong address and such. Ill keep looking.
Yeah that's exactly how I feel... Frustrated. FC every time when authenticating

Sorry to hear. That's all I got now since no root to edit other files. I'd just try another wifi if you can and see if it happens again. If so, no dice, sounds like FR to resolve only way.
I'll be doing some changes like moving from this area to see if it is the gps or the hardware. The last thing I'll do is the reset tho.

I am wondering the same thing. That notification drives me crazy. I seem to be having issues receiving some calls. For some reason the phone will ring in wifi calling and show who is calling but no one is there one I answer. The other person tells me it rings but then goes straight to voice mail.

It is real annoying when it happens. I shut it off for now because I didn't really need it on. I get pretty good signal but it seems to be in and out at work sometimes so I liked having it on. But it does me no good if almost every call I get does that. I assume they are working out the bugs in it.

WiFi calling works fine for me but not for texting. Ill have to retry to send the text a few times before it goes through. Also my mobile signal drops to no bars when WiFi is on, and returns when i turn it off.
