Life after Clean ROM - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I was disappointed to read about Scott's decision to stop developing his CleanRom. I found it to be a great balance between TW and Google Edition.
I hope someone will take it over. I don't see a clear alternative to CR.
Thoughts?

Giving Synergy a try. But still keeping CR backup

If you're looking for a fantastic running ROM with the same odex'd stock feel go with synergy and odex it yourself.
The "life after" stuff is a bit melodramatic

Try Hyper
The newest release of Hyper is incredibly stable, easy to use, and insanely fast. I strongly suggest giving it a spin.

disappointing clean rom is stable I will definitely miss it.. Thanks for a nandroid backup that I will keep forever

just wondering if you have a link or anything saying he's stopping development for it?

Another CleanRom fan here.....still running 1.2 cause it worked so well for me.
I wish Scott well in whatever he is doing next! I certainly appreciate all the hard work he put in.
Thank you, Scott!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to eclipse and used tb and deleted health and Samsung link. The two things left of bloat. Then flashed latest faux. I dig it so far. Farewell clean.

Life after cleanrom is fine but better with it. Scott stopping has me wondering the birth to death rate of android developers. More devices and old ones that stay relevant already spread them out pretty good.

No idea Dev had stopped.. Def a great and stable ROM...now decisions decisions

My signature should say it all

Yep totally bummed he's stopping, just loved how great everything worked on his ROM. I will give Hyper a try again. I used it before but had a few issues, looks like he's got it running pretty good now. Can always nandroid...

So, is hyper where everyone is heading?
Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Tapatalk 2

yeah I'm still on 1.0 cause its the best battery life. I've tried 1.3 and 1.5R2 though not 1.6 or 1.6.5.
1.0 is still my DD. Smooth no lag (though i had no lag on stock) and everything worked with crazy battery life. I have all of the Zips DL so I'll always have the nandroids plus the zips. The battery life i got on 1.0 (.25% drain per hour idle and 6-7 hours on screen time) makes me not need to mess with other roms right now. Unfortunatley i was not getting the same battery life with the other versions of this rom.
Also unfortunate he closed the thread right away as we're unable to thank him for a great ROM. I wish him the best and hope whatever changed in his life is good or if not so good things improve for him. Thanks Scott

Not me, I like CleanRom, I've tried Hyperdrive and really like all it's features but I'm running CynogenMod. Why? Because it works on my phone and NO TouchWiz ROM I've tried does work properly with all my apps and I can't figure it out? Apps that ran just fine on my Galaxy S3 work perfectly on AOSP ROMs on the S4 but will not work on any TouchWiz ROM and I haven't the knowledge, time or inclination to trouble shoot TouchWiz so.... CyanogenMod.

I almost cried when I read that message. After having terrible lag issues with hyperdrive, it looks like synergy will be my next go to rom when the update comes out which I will like because it will have more features than CR did. I don't like anything crazy but some tweaks that scott doesn't offer in his stockish rom will be nice. I am going to miss him very much though. Great guy and great dev.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2

Lmao, I loled when I read this... Good stuff.
I am far from a dev, hell I've barely been using an android device for a month but, devs have such a thankless job/hobby. I am not aware of one that gets money for anything they do (short of "bounties") yet, get ridiculed when something they do may not work for someone.
I appreciate everything, would love to get into doing things like this just have no idea where to start. I wouldn't mind taking a crack at making my own ROM for personal use and if good enough, maybe public. I just have zero experience, lol

What ROM is everybody using

Hey everybody, I just order a Fascinate today and was interested in what ROM you guys/girls prefer to use. Im switching from a droid 2, and previously a droid 1, which had a great ROM community. I think its fantastic that there are so many Galaxy S phones but I think it is unfortunate that Roms are not applicable across models.
In addition to selecting what rom you are using it would be great to say what works great and what is still buggy. Please let me know if I forgot anything.

Welcome to the community!
Personally, I've been using jt1134's Super Clean with AOSP. Bubby323's Magic with AOSP is looking very promising. I tested version 0.2 for a couple days. and I think 0.3 will be a winner.
We're just getting started here in month 2 of the Fascinate's release, and there has already been some spectacular progress, mainly in the kernel department. There are some familiar names from the D1 community at work over here, and once FroYo drops for this phone, things should REALLY take off! (Seriously, who wants to work on a version of the OS that is already out of date, and will be replaced any minute now?)
I am loving that Blue Breeze!
Actually thought there would be more out there by now. Or at least some themes. I am sure, in time!

Well, I just finished an Android app that would have taken most devs about a half an hour. It took me a week, and I now have bald spots.
So I guess time is relative!

so how are you liking it compared to your droid 2?
using Zinc V1.0 right now. So far i'm liking it, but there's not a whole lot of difference in anything right now. I've tried jt's clean, blue breeze, aosp magic and Zinc, and they're pretty much all variations on a theme. not that there's anything wrong with that, i'm simply saying whatever you pick you can't go wrong, and it's easy to change anything you don't like about any one of them.

Best alternative to CleanROM?

Since it looks like we'll never get an updated version of CleanROM (and who can blame Scott, he's moved on to another phone) what is the best alternative. I love CleanROM because it's a simple, no BS rom. It's not over-themed, no bloat, runs great. I'd like to run something that's using the latest leak as it's base. What do you guys think? Thanks!

IMHO CleanROM is a pretty strong competitor in the basic ICS Rom dept. If you want to enrich your Rez experience, move on to a sense 4 ROM
There are several out there. My favorite happens to be Newt's One xXx . YOu can find it on the Developer forum...along with the others!
Conrom or viper rez. You could make a cleanrom type rom yourself pretty easily with the right know-how
Been using neomax adrenaline for the past week or so and really like it. Had been on cleanrom for several months but since it wasn't being updated any more I decided to s-off and move on. Really like adrenaline, and to me it seems like the most like cleanrom.

Nils' rom, con rom, are 2 great ones. Personally I like newts one XxX and Joelz's viper rom. I'd try each one for about 3 days each to let the battery stats configure, and to let the system set in. A lot of times people write a device off for having terrible battery life, even though they tested it for like a day. *cough* *cough* the verge. Love the site, but they need to test for like 4 days. Anyway back on track, I can say the con rom v4 and v5 are extremely stable.

NeoMax: Adrenaline, it's a de-sensed, stripped down, fast as all hell ROM. It may actually be the best ROM that I've used in the 9 months I've had the Rezound, no joke. If you want a non-barebones ROM the regular NeoMax should be just as fast but I can't attest to that personally.

[Q] ROM - looking for stability, GPS, and functionality.

I just rooted my phone and I'm anxious to put a good solid ROM on here.
Since upgrading to stock ICS from gingerbread (pre root), I've had nothing but problems, so I'm hoping a custom ROM cam solve this. My gps and notification sounds don't work, and the battery life has gone down the tubes.
I basically looking for a great stock gingerbread rom, or a stable ICS ROM that can provide me with the original stability and functionality this phone once provided. Suggestions? I am currently using the 3.0.35-siyah v3.4.2 nomswap+ktoonsez kernel.
Thanks everyone!

Believe me, I'd love to go from ROM to ROM, but I'm a bit busy (grad student) and I cant say I enjoy hacking my phone...the whole process freaks me out. Just doing this out of necessity so I don't need to go back to that stupid iphone. Looking for suggestions from people's experience. I love my gs2 and this is a last resort to get it working like it did before that HORRIBLE ICS roll out.
I hear AOKP 7.1 is really good with battery and GPS, but I alo hear the kernel is what determines battery. Truth on both fronts?

I could say the same thing for PhoneBricker even though it is no longer supported. Point is, as you know ninja, ROMS and kernels play differently on each phone. Also, each gives a unique user experience.
OP, flashing correctly takes about 10-15 minutes not including download time. So, not having time doesn't work as a reason. Not being rude. It's easy to do while you're:
Taking shower
Using the restroom
Washing the dishes
While you're surfing FB on your laptop/PC

No offense taken! I think my trepidation comes more from my experience with this phone....I did that official ICS update and it ruined my phone. Got a new one, and a ton of bugs made me frustrated. Once you start flashing stuff with CWM the deepest trouble I have been in is needing a factory reset. But if you are really scared then go ahead and download all the return to stock + root files and mobile odin and stuff. I just did that in case of emergencies.

Takes that long for the ROM to flash. Then add kernel cleaner and Gapps. Then reboot + re-optimization... Taking closer to 10 minutes. Add a few more minutes and you've got a great estimate of 10-15. EVERYONE has 10-15 minutes in their day to flash a ROM considering it's hands off once you press "go". See my examples.
The post above this has a great tip for anyone who wants to be prepared for the worst.

beans vs cleanrom

I have been running cleanrom 3.5 for a few weeks and have been very happy. Tonight I'm either going to flash beans 5 or cleanrom 4. Any advice as to what's more stable and smooth? I think the features are pretty similar aside from the aosp theme of beans.

If you want more of an AOSP look to your Note 2, then Beans is the way to go -- he themes his ROM's to give you that AOSP look.
CleanROM is not themed, but very light weight in terms of removed bloatware and other tweaks that the dev has done to the ROM.
I prefer CleanROM since I'm not really a big fan of the AOSP look/feel (I know.. I'm in the minority here).
But as others have said, you can't go wrong with either ROM, they are fantastic. I'm just hoping some of the themer's out there come to this phone as they did on the S3.

So will we be seeing a BAMF rom? BAMF roms was the only thing that made my thunderbolts bearable. I loved the BAMF Stripped V1.8 Froyo the best.

I don't know. I am the only member with a Note 2 and the abuse seen from some people lately has put off other members. The sense of entitlement from the Android community chases off more talent than anything else.
So, I won't say no, but will leave it as a fading hope, that is still in 'maybe' status but could change to a resounding 'NO'.

Beans is actually smaller than clean rom. As far as light weight.

I've seen a lot of devs stop releasing stuff because of all the bs. I wish most devs would just post a "this is my rom, take it or leave it but don't B!TCH!" and just release it as they built it for themselves and let others create mods instead of trying to cater to everyone.
Can we please keep on topic for a change.

I loved your roms on the Alltel HTC Touch (Vogue). You gave us a lot of things to play with on that phone.

Rooted - Beans, Clean, Hyper or Gruesome?

(This is coming from an addicted flasher...and I do and have donated to everyone of these Einstein's of ROM's so there is no allegiance to any of these that makes or phone super-fantastic)
Howdy is to those who have taken the rooted option to maximize their G4 Phone. I really do think on the development page some folks think this is a 24 hour a day brain surgery...I mean 10s of thousands of views on every ROM, myself included, to see what the latest and greatest that may be just released, and then, there I go flashing again! Crap.. I know I'm not alone. I wish I could stop!!!
I've tired them all, as of now Beans is my choice. In fact, there is so little a difference on any of these Rom's from the hard working developers that I think there is a "one up man ship" for the latest and greatest. I just want to open a discussion, and also an opinion of these particular four and keep this in the General.tread as not to make it a pissing contest. Again this is to just get feedback on just what you all have liked or disliked about each.
For me Beans finally got rid of the "custom/Padlock" on boot and also I was able to install 3minit settings. That's a big plus.(for G3 flashers as it's like Kinda Crap Mods which made my device rock with my S3). My battery life is exceptional but that probably has to do with our pretty incredible G4.
Again this is just a discussion and maybe we can learn something from each other.
I like cleanrom simply because I used and loved it on my s3, and I trust that the same attention to detail and dedication is going to be brought to this phone. With that said, I am not a flashaholic, and am generally happy with anything that isn't full of bloat.

I flashed hyper, clean and beans and I enjoy beans the most. although I have a few issues, mainly my battery disappeared the other day and after many reboots still hasn't come back lol..and air view just stops working out of nowhere...its the smoothest rom of them all I think. hyperdrive was fast but the dropdown bar lagged really bad. beans dropdown bar is very quick and smooth, just like it was on his s3 roms.

I've tried everything but beans (I meant to try it last night but got busy) and clean rom has been the best for me.
Every other seems to have one thing or another that is not quite perfect or something that just doesn't work right.
With clean everything just works, it's pretty fast and the battery seems good.
This was the same experience I had on my rezound with cleanrom vs. everyone else.
With that in mind, I really have to try beans. Except for a couple of things, it's getting rave reviews and his reputation appears to be terrific.
I'll update my post after checking it out.
I went Slim at first... Could not get exchange or GPS to work.
Im running hyper and havent changed from it for a few days now its stable, GPS and Exchange email work.. which is what i need.
CleanROM Slim is my daily right now for the past week. . Been perfect, fast, smooth and great battery life.. Haven't seen any issues yet. I'm currently at 2+ days standby and 3+ hours screen time and 19% battery left. Taking screenshots as I get closer to 0% for the battery life thread.
so far i'm loving beans. I've tried Hyper and Clean, but beans seemed to the most stable and smooth for me.
My vote goes towards Beans.
Beans is the best for mecas well.

Why horrible? I'm running Slim Bean now and like it very much.
I tried Jelly Beans, and that was still too stock for my taste.

I used to be as flash addict, but these days I'm more interested in daily driving and tweaking as needed. I'm on beans and loving it. TW isn't that bad to me, definitely different from the AOKP build I was running tho...lol. Might try clean next, super cool Dev and I tried some of his work on other devices...

I just wanted to say thank you for this thread. It is exactly what I seek to find out when I get a new device. Looks like I'm going to start with Clean.
Gruesome beats them all and is easily the best TW ROM. I've flashed em all and the smoothness, battery etc far outperforms the others!!

i too say thanks for the thread but i concluded to start with Jelly Beans..hmm
Running CleanROM myself but have only downloaded the others to try.
So far CR has been smooth and as fast if not faster than stock.
Will get around to testing the others out though as I like to have a comparison and also a choice for when the crack flashing bug hits.
