[Q] Need Help. No ROM No Recovery! - HTC EVO 3D

I'm trying to fix my friends phone and basically what he did was he tried rooting it and installing a custom recovery but some how messed up and erased the ROM and the recovery. So now the phone just shows the hboot or fastboot screen and wont boot passed that. Now Im not trying to read to much just to fix his phone. He should be doing this but whatever I said I'd help. Basically Im looking for one of those PG86IMG files with the stock ROM in it. I found one but it said it was older then the one on the phone or something. I think I found HTC's stock ROM that uses the exe to load the ROM to the phone just haven't had time to try it and thats my last idea I have and if that doesnt work ill probably give him back the phone and say I cant do much for it. Also in the Hboot screen it says relocked and s-on. So yeah any help would be greatly appreciated. :fingers-crossed:

Is the phone a CDMA (Sprint) Version or GSM Version?

It's CDMA. Do you by chance know where I can find a recovery update.zip? So then I could just get a recovery on his phone? But idk if a recovery will help since his hboot is relocked and s-on, but if you can put a recovery on with it locked then I could flash a custom ROM. I think.

I used to have a GSM Evo 3D but I think with steps there aren't huge differences only files. First you absolutely must unlock the bootloader properly. Try to unlock it with the HTC Dev site. If you've done it correctly the bootloader should say "UNLOCKED". You have to be in the bootloader to do this anyway so it shouldn't be a problem. Are you familiar with using the ADB and Fastboot commands?

Yeah I know how to use ADB done it a couple of times but I'm not too familiar with the ADB commands. The problem I had with ADB this time was it could see the device even though I installed drivers. This is my most common problem with ADB once i get it connected then it's cake. That was on a windows PC though. I feel like I have better luck with ADB and fastboot on linux so maybe I'll try that tonight. I didnt try too hard to get ADB working but even if I get it unlocked I still need a recovery. Well i suppose you can push a recovery through adb. Yeah I should probably just get ADB working with it lol.

Sorry for the late reply. And I suppose you meant ADB couldn't see the device lol. TBH ADB in my opinion should be a tool that works every time not a hit-or-miss. (Try checking if you have all the necessary files in the ADB folder, check the Java version etc.) If ADB works you can then UNLOCK the Bootloader. (http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/) So I've been digging around the CDMA forums and I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821 With the bootloader unlocked you can just write the recovery onto the phone through ADB (Follow the steps outlined in the guide.) Once that's done I would suggest to Wipe the Data, Cache, and Dalvik cache (If there is anything to wipe lol) in the recovery. With that done you should flash a stock based rom. Like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668918 Hope it works.

Thank you very much for this information! I'm currently at work right now so I cant work on the phone atm but I will give it a try once I get home. Again thank you for responding to my question. I have a good feeling this will do the trick!

No Problem. Just tell me if it works or not. (Hopefully it does)

Good good good, just install the recovery and you should be all set. I suggest once you a working ROM to install 4ext Recovery. It's the best one for the 3D.

bootloop from hell

i started i started running mik runny yesterday. I dont know if it was somethign with the rom but. I just updated my prl on dfs and once i went to reboot it wont go past the white htc screen and just keeps bootlooping. I cannot figure it out. Ive wiped everything muiltiple times. my nanadroids do the same thing. New roms too. I even did a factory reset. i dont get it My recovery and fastboot still work though. any other suggestions?
Flashed a new recovery img. i was using twrp2.0 i flashed twrp 1.3 to see if i had any luck with that but no dice. Im downloading the latest RUU now and hopefully that will fix it. Im guessing if it doesnt then something happened to my phone. If im not mistaken flashing the PG86IMG will flash allthe partitions so there would be no reason for it to not work unless of course something happened to the hardware?
Btw Hboot 1.4 and running mikrunny when the bootloop started. Im super confused since it booted fine for me numerous times. The only thing i changed before this reboot was prl and i turned fastboot off earlier. one other thing im downloading RUU_Shooter_S_Sprint_WWE_2.17.651.5 radio 1.00.1216 this isnt going to affect my hboot once flashing right? even if i have to re root thats fine i just dont wanna get stuck in 1.5 prison

well im kinda stuck now. I tried to run the ruu for my hboot version and on step 11 system it failed to unzip. so now i have s off still but no recovery. Im gonna try to put cwm back on my sd and hope that it flashes and see if i can get some rom to flash. I cant figure this out i feel like a newb again. fml. Does it matter that it wasnt the first time i booted into the rom for it to be a bad flash like that?
well i think im officially bricked. I ran an older ruu and it failed to unzip system so after much searching i decided to run one of the latest pg86imgs it fully updated succesfully but still bootloops at the htc screen. So now i have a locked hboot 1.5 with s-off. I gotta get some sleep and see what i can do tommorow. from evreything i have read they say im not bricked if im able to do what i have. but i dont understand why nothing will work.

Sup man your not bricked don't worry or even soft bricked lol.
You should of waited on that updated zip reason it's boot loopin or lockin up is due to the phone never got wiped before the update....
Here is the CWM that will work for you. You need to put the img in your platform tools for ADB. Rename the img file to cwm then plug your phone in while in hboot. Type fastboot flash recovery cwm.img this will put the recovery back on your phone man.
In CWM you can mount your phone and copy a rom you downloaded off xda. Take the rom you downloaded open it up on your computer make a copy of the boot.img place that in your platform tools folder. Now mount your phone using CWM copy the romwhich will put it on your sd card. Now wipe everything. Then while in ADB type : adb reboot bootloader this will take you to hboot again now type fastboot flash boot boot.img this will flash the kernel for you. Now go back into recovery and flash your rom.
You should be good to go man. Let me know if you have any questions.
This should get your phone working...
The good thing about the 3vo is dat its unbrickable just always keep a Rom u ones work an always erase scrub thing / factory reset cutting shortcuts don't work in rooting/dev world

Ok so now that i ran that ruu that changed my hboot to 1.5 is that gonna affect how the cwm installs?even though it says s-off. Also for some reason im having trouble running any commands for fastboot. Ive followed a bunch of guides made sure the envinronemtal variables were correct ect, ect but none of the adb commands will work. Maybe its my pc idk.
Since i cant get fastboot to work on my pc do you think i would just be able to reinstall clockworkmod by renaming it on my sd like you do to root in the first place. Then use it to wipe and then try reflashing?
U might have to re unlock it if ur 3vo says locked at the top if not u should have no problem

I was able to re run the pg86img with the 1.4 hboot now im back on hboot 1.4 still with soff and doesnt say locked anymore. I also was able to install recovery again but i used twrp 1.3 since none of the download links i could find were good and the ones that were good were disk img. I tried running virus superwipe tool and reflashing a rom again to see if anyhtign changed but it didnt. i really just wish i could get the commands to work to use fastboot and adb.
One thing i just noticed in recovery i went into mounts and system and data were unmounted and cache and sdcard were mounted. Do i need to mount everything and try again or was that the way it should of been?

I read about the 1.5 with s-off issue a while back when hboot 1.5 first was released. As long as you have s-off, it doesn't really matter what hboot you have. You'll be able to flash entire ROMs (kernel included) in one step just like you could before your issue arose, because you have s-off. I sadly don't have enough experience with fastboot to be able to give you an easy guide to flashing cwm onto your phone though, but I hope this helps you at least somewhat.
EDIT: I just realized everything I said now doesn't matter since you're not on hboot 1.5 anymore...sorry about that. reaper24 gave you a link to cwm 4.0.1.4 in post #8 in this thread. Stop using TWRP 1.3, there's already a TWRP 2 specifically for EVO 3D and even the latest TWRP has been having issues. CWM has been completely stable for me on every HTC phone I've ever used (Hero CDMA, EVO 4G and now currently the EVO 3D). CWM 4.0.1.4 is in post #8 of this thread as an attachment (it's a small link in between reaper's post and his signature)

i know right. I think what it might be is something i saw earlier about since i flashed the PG86IMG and it took revolutionary off my hboot that i no longer have fastboot. I tried to run some other commands and got the same thing. So for the hell of it i tried to run revolutionary from hbootand fastboot and it just waits for device. But then when i reboot the phone it will recognize it, but it doesnt stay long enough to run revolutionary. No i just have to remember which pg86img it was that made my phone just stay at the white screen so i can run revolutionary. lol

[Q] Which Stock RUU/ROM

Hi folks,
I have a HTC Evo 3D from the UK bought sim free, rooted it with s-on and tried to install a rom with 4ext, got stuck in bootloop, tried clearing cache but it never worked, tried a few different roms (not the best idea) and failed loads, the back up I used successfully before stopped working and in a mad attempt to get anything working I managed to stop 4ext as the recovery and its now CWM Recovery v4.0.1.4. It doesnt boot loop it just stays on the HTC screen without doing anything else.
Is there anything I can do?
I have tried the shipped RRUs but run into an error each time, probably since I am just guessing at which I am supposed to be using, is there a way to figure it out? Or a rom/cwm way or a way of getting another backup/restore file?
Any help is very much appreciated, I shouldnt have been allowed the USB cable! lol
Thanks
Paul

4ext recovery is the choice for s-on users so using cwm is a bad idea. You maybe experiencing bootloops on 4ext because you may have not had smartflash enabled. S-on users cannot flash kernels through normal means through recovery like s-off users can. With smartflash this is possible. So my suggestion is to reflash 4ext through fastboot and enable it if you havn't done so and do a full wipe of your phone and reflash your rom and see if that work. As for the ruu's. You have to have your bootloader relocked to flash them. You can flash them through bootloader if they were signed by htc but if not, you will have to run the ruu exe on your pc which still ofcourse needs the bootloader to be relocked.

Did you type the command with the exact name of your recovery file in your folder? Also do you have HTC sync installed? If so uninstall it. It will interfere with fastboot.

Dont have HTC sync. I used the exact name, even using the TAB button to complete the filename
Thanks
Are you sure your bootloader is completely unlocked? Sometimes when you apply the unlock bin code the unlock screen doesn't show up with Ics. What kind of output do you get when you type the fastboot flash recovery command? There might be a clue. Well in any event I'm going to trouble shoot your problem. If you could copy and paste the input and output of your command that will help alot.
---------- Post added at 11:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:15 PM ----------
Edit: let's try to get your phone back on stock and unlocking your bootloader instead. I read your post about how your having trouble flashing ruu. The first question is, is your phone branded or unbranded? Depending on either you will have to find an ruu exe file based on the region and carrier if branded. Just google it up. Next your phone will have to be in relocked state if your bootloader says unlocked. Type fastboot oem lock to relock it. Now you can run the file. Remember you must have the right on or it won't take. Remember after you unlock it again it will erase all your user data. Let me know if you succeed or not and then we can proceed from there. Oh yeah here's a link you might want to read up on about the whole ruu thing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655832
Pretty sure its fully unlocked, I was able to run superSU, install 4ext and busybox etc.
I have got 4ext working again, the problem appears that the two recovery.img files I had tried were not the correct version for my phone, I've got the right one now and can boot into 4ext through the recovery option.
Okay, now try to flash a sense Rom like cool sense and let me know if it boots for you

Completely stock, stuck on white htc boot screen

I have only seen a few threads where people were stuck on the white htc boot screen. And they were all rooted with custom roms and such. And if this was my phone, I would also be rooted with custom roms.
But this is my dads phone. Completely stock from the day he bought it. Two days ago, out of nowhere, it decided just to never turn on again.
It boots to the white htc screen and then hangs there. Every few seconds the screen will blink. I tried to remove the sim card and boot the phone because I read that can be an issue. But notta.
Hes not worried about his phone, (I know I can do a factory reset on it and get it running again). Hes worried about all of his data. He had a lot of very sentimental stuff on his phone. My Grandpa just passed away and he had all kinds of pictures and stuff on there. Now a lot of that might be on the sd card, but I don't know how much is on the phone storage itself.
So I have a bricked stock recovery, stock rom, not rooted rezound, and I need to know if its possible to get any data off of the onboard storage.
I have the drivers and I have tried to use adb from the stock recovery, but it adb will not recognize the device. Fastboot however does recognize the phone, but from my understanding, I can't do any backing up with fastboot. I would need adb for that. I have also read that adb will not recognize the stock recovery, that you need a custom recover like clockwork first. But In order for my to install clockwork, I would have to unlock the bootload and therefore wipe out all the phones data anyways.
So Im really having a hard time here. I don't want to have to tell my dad that any pictures of my grandpa that weren't on the sdcard are gone now.
Is there any way?
Thanks for the help

I think so, ill have to double check when i get home from work in a bit. Im assuming because fastboot detects the phone fine.
If fastboot sees the phone and works, is there any way to pull the data off the phone? I was under the assumption that you could only "pull" and "push' files from adb.
So adb won't detect the phone at all unless the rom is running? So adb is out of the question?

Ok, im a little confused right now. Im sorry. Im not used to this phone, I personally have a Galaxy nexus which I rooted and put custom Rom'ed etc, and it was a little different.
When you say "use fastboot commands while in botloader / hboot"
What do you mean? When I start the phone by holding down the volume down key, it brings up the stock bootloader with a few options. (fastboot, recovery, factory reset, reload bootloader, and power off, I believe) But im not sure what you mean by hboot?
Fastboot only works if I select the fastboot from the bootloader on the phone. Then on the pc "fastboot devices" command detects the phone.
From there I should be able to use fastboot commands to pull data off of the phone your saying. Forgive me for this, but how do I know what commands to use to pull all the data off?
Again, thanks for coming in here and choosing to try and help me

fastboot will only allow you to use commands...for example...extract the boot.img outta the rom you tried flashing and put it in the folder on your pc where you have fastboot stored....then cd into the folder in command prompt and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" without the quotations....if you read my s-off you will never have to use fastboot to flash anything at all....as for adb there really isnt much you can do to "pull" stuff from your phone...htc works much different than samsung or any other androids
Edit: because you are s-on you always have to do this for flashing anything....including recovery....you have to unlock your bootloader via htcdev.com to run any fastboot commands though

Yea, the bootloader reads "SHIP S-ON"
So basically were screwed right now. There is no way for me to pull data like pictures off of the phones storage within fastboot. I would need to unlock the bootloader to do this, which will wipe the phones data anyways wont it?

no it just unlocks your bootloader...your not flashing a rom or wiping anything...and no theres no way to pull anything with htc phones in fastboot as far as i know...i think i may have seen a program that may do something but not sure...also this may help..once you unlock bootloader you can install a custom recovery and mount internal storage from custom recovery and pull your files off that way

Ohhhh ok, that would be great.
Im still a little scared about that though, because on my phone, unlocking the bootloader automatically factory rest and wiped data. And I keep reading everywhere that unlocking the bootloader on the rezound also wipes the data / factory resets. Even on the instructions posted here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ht...nlocking-rooting-rom-ing-faq.html#post2083197
It states that your data will be wiped. And that the final steps asks you to confirm to a factory reset to unlock the bootloader?
I mean, I guess at this point its my only shot anyways, ill never get those pictures off with the bootloader locked. But are you certain that unlock wont do a factory reset?
Again, thanks for helping so far
EDIT:
Also while I was running through the steps on the htcdev.com, it gives this disclaimer:
" To prevent unauthorized access to your data, unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings."

No it will not...that guide you posted has things way off....all it does is simply unlock your bootloader/hboot period....follow the steps they give here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and youll be set i also see no where on that page where it wipes anything...ive done this more times than i can count on both my hands and toes...i know what it does...updating via a ph98img file or flashing a new rom wipes all your data
Edit: i can even have many other people / and even developers vouch for me on this....i wouldnt lie to you

Unlocking your bootloader with a stock phone/recovery will do a factory reset.
Mine reset when it was still stock and both guides here state the same thing. I believe if you have a custom recovery the phone can't auto run the factory reset.

You get this warning on the HTCDev.com page also before you even start.
Are you sure you wish to continue?
You are about to start the process of unlocking your device. Unlocking your device allows you to install custom Operating Systems (“OS”) onto your device. Custom OS’s are not tested as thoroughly as your original OS, and unlocking your device may void all or parts of your warranty. HTC disclaims any and all liability for proper functioning of your device after the bootloader has been unlocked and for data lost in the unlocking process. To prevent unauthorized access to your data, unlocking the bootloader will delete all personal data from your device including applications, text messages and personalized settings.

I rarely disagree with you @REV3NT3CH, but I am going to have to this time and confirm @mjones73 statement... unlocking the bootloader wipes everything, it is clearly stated on HTCdev.com that it will do this as a security measure. The instant you complete the procedure, all data is wiped permanently.

Can a signed ph98img ruu be altered with 7zip without breaking a signature? I think I might have an idea and it involves flashing an empty userdata img, stock system img and matching boot.
@hxdrummerxc
When you power on to fastboot relay the first 6 lines to me in upper left please.

yup.. s-off is being worked on.
Hey. I've been trying to flash the twrp recovery as indicated in the Htc dev unlock and root discussion. I've already unocked the bootloader, but once i try to flash the new recovery via the fastboot method i get the error message on the windows shell:" C:\Users\Desktop\Fastboot>fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
error: cannot load 'recovery.img' "
The file is there, debug usb mode is on and i'm using windows 7. I also downloaded adb drivers... am i doing smth wrong?
Thanks in advance

I don't know...I haven't any problems with flashing twrp recovery. I follow steps from THIS link (look in last method "Fastboot Method")
That is exactly the procedure i was following too... i really don't get what is going wrong.

I have The same problem..
Did you guys rename the image file you downloaded to "recovery.img"?
Also, you're not trying to flash it with the phone turned on, are you? USB debugging has no bearing on fastboot mode... Make sure you're in fastboot mode and not bootloader mode also.
i double checked everything. I am in usb fastboot mode , cable connected to phone etc. it just doesnt work.. giving me the error message as before.

I have an ATT phone but currently living in Jamaica...I've had this phone for close to 2weeks now but im getting frustrated with all the att bloatware pre-installed..i would also like to tether using the phone but instead have to b using pdanet. i have already unlocked bootloader on htcdev following ur guidelines and i have all the correct htc drivers installed. upon looking through ur threads about the desire 610 i came across 1 person who has the same ATT phone and followed ur rooting guide but now has posted pics of their screen with icons to the left and the borders bigger...are u working on a new root or better yet, is there a way to enable tethering or uninstall the att bloatware without rooting the phone bcuz thats all i really want to do in the first place...and before i forget, i dont see an option to update the phone without using ATT, does this mean that i cant update to newer versions of kit kat knowing that im in jamaica... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...
I'm not certain yet. Wait until I get a one click solution for you, and we'll see if it's something that's easily fixed. The root method is about as good as it's going to get. There's no exploit needed, so it's unlikely one will ever be created that will work.
try adding ( .img ) at the end so recovery.img.img it looks like, change to recovery.img then add another .img at the end.. worked for me isk why.. or use kingroot to root after bootloader unlocked. Sorry to add to old thread.
looking to but htc 610 phone, can all models be rooted ? dont wanna buy another phone and all but my model can root and twrp, i will lose it for real.. any help appreciated.. trying to stay with gsm unlocked or simple mobile and under $75 , as well as hotspot/tether on the phone in settings. any suggestions on phones to buy appreciated

Need help please asap please!!!!

I think you mean you relocked the bootloader again, since that is what it said in your PM to me; and it makes more sense (based on what you are saying).
Relocking as you now know, is not (in itself) going to return you to stock. Think about that, where would the necessary stock ROM and other files magically come from?

adb only works when the phone is booted, and possibly in recovery. It will never work in bootloader or fastboot mode.
Check to see if the command works in fastboot mode: fastboot devices
If so, since you are already RELOCKED, just run the 4.28.502.2 RUU (as I've seen you asked for in another thread, which I also answered).
Thanks man.
