[Q] WoW my first cookerd ROM :) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I have an I9100 and I would like to change the ROM with a cooked one, this my first time
I just want to go on with Open Source and faster operating system without all the Google and Samsung Apps
I will go on with the Gmail account but a little bit lighter
I'm not sure about wich ROM to choose
Can you please just indicate me a general ROM?
Thank you very much in advcance for reply to this newbie question

This Q is a no - no.
Check the development forum, pick 3 or 4 ROMs, try them out and then get back here and tell us what you thought.
(actually, this thread will be closed by then).

Gaston, why would be this thread closed? He asked what ROM to use as a base, not which is the best.He asked about Sammy based,Cm based,AOKP based ROMs.(These are the most common ROM bases).

hey mate first of all i wanna say to you welcome to our community
and second one :
we have a lot of custom roms that you can try like :
- NeatROM
- wanamlite
- CSR
- AND etc.
These are based on stock roms from Sammy
- ParanoidAndroid
- Rootbox
- ThinkingBridge
- And few others you have just to look for the one that looks good for you
Oh and this ones are based on pure android from Google
And next time please look at few roms before posting threads like this
Have a G'day

Because people will moan at the littlest thing on here and talk to there mate the mod and have it closed. Don't you see this ALL THE TIME on here. We do. And no he didn't ask about stock cm aokp based roms he asked about cooked roms. Gas Ent being funny he just knows what will happen to this thread

if I were to ask you for a ROM I should try, you really think you would suggest me other than your ROM of choice?
What ROM are you on?
Why are you on that?
Who suggested you to try it?
Don't mind answering, i'm just gonna say it sucks.
I don't like custom, so here's my biased opinion.
Bias opinion are against xda rules; last time I checked we were free to choose what WE like NOT what OTHERS say.
If the OP wants to know where to kick off he needs to go to development forum and check ROMs out.

Reported. Not really interested if some people are too stupid to understand why these threads are nada (You know who you are). These people clearly have no comprehension of how much work it is to administer a place like this. We should be making this job easier (I.E not posting mindless crap) for the people who do administer the place.

Thread closed as its a Best ROM thread.

Hey guys, I come from the "Mytouch 3G Slide" development forum, and well..
You guys just have so much its getting me lost lol.
My question is:
with sooooooooooo many roms.. which are the most used and people like the most?
Something that has features to impress the person next to you, its fun, fast, and nice.
Where I come from there's mostly just Cyanogen Roms.. so yeah, im lost, you guys have a LOT of roms.

Look all I want to know is which ROM(s) are good.. You guys have tried them, I have NOT.
I want experience from people who have tried them.
I have rooted LOTS of devices..
Dont go assuming I can't root because I'm posting a simple question.
The ones I tried and that I like the most are:
CriskeloRom V34 (under Galaxy SII Android Development)
CheckROM Revolution V4 (under Galaxy SII Original Android Development)
I hope that helps
Good place to get started
Best way to get started with roms on the SGS2 is go visit here:

one mans good is another mans poor
just read through some of the more popular threads, you can see the number of replies in each one, and flash it if you want to. If you dont like it, flash something different.
Its not rocket science
I've used Checkrom, Criskelo Rom & Hyperdroid. Personal fave is hyperdroid rom. Fast, fluid and amazing battery life

Few questions

Hello,
I am sorry for a question which may seem simple but I never really noticed it getting mentioned.
My Galaxy ace was rooted then ages later I installed an the 2.3 update on my phone with Odin as it hadn't been released in the UK at the time (May even still be the case).
I have since installed CWM5 and CyanogenMod (yesterday in fact), now I am fairly sure the answer is yes but would like to confirm if I am correct.
Does the phone remain rooted after ROMs are installed etc.?
I am a huge fan of the CyanogenMod and would strongly suggest it to any one with an Ace that like my self was always on the verge of installing a custom ROM but always chickened out. It is extremely fast.
I only have one or two issues that I don't know if it is the ROM or my phone which are; screen no longer lights up just buttons when I receive a notification and if I am on Wifi the button back light randomly lights up - I think I saw some one else mentioning they had this issue, just wondering if anyone knows if it is the ROM and I can simply wait till there is an upgrade from the Cyanogenmod peeps or if it is my phone being an arse and I should maybe rock my phone back to stock and do it all again.
Sorry if I have not posted this in a manor this forum desires but still trying to get my head around where to post what in this rather huge forum.
Also,
First post so will also say Hello.... Hello....
Thanks in advance for any replies.
p.s.
Third attempt to do the damn image verification haha
Hello ~
First, it depends on the rom. Custom roms are usually rooted. So,the answer is yes.
Second, there are bugs in custom rom. You can choose some rom with less bug or stock rom.
Sorry for my bad english
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA
if installing/flashing stock rom, it'll be unrooted automatically even if its rooted before.
if installing/flashing custom roms, yes it'll stay rooted because custom rom mostly include root.
the problem u having might caused by custom roms/kernel, try experiments with different roms/kernel and see if its gone.

Firstly, please do not apologise for your "bad English" - You have taken the time to learn English and I bet I cannot say a word in your language - so I thank you for taking the time to answer my question in a language which is foreign to you. Props to all those on this forum that do that.
Now back to the topic! hehe
Yes sorry I should of been more specific about what ROM I am rolling, it is this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543521) I thought due to the amount of response it had it would of been a very popular one among the Ace community and was hoping some people may have had some insight into my issues.
And thank you for clearing up my confusion about the root
And while writing this I saw the post by an0nym0us so I shall reply to him as well in here
Thank you for that extra detailing when it comes to the rooting, that is the exact information I required.
Is their a ROM which is a "must" for an ace user to try out? I am being rather adventurous now haha My first taste of a good custom ROM has got me wanting to find more which either more stability or just improvements on other good ROMs
Thank you all for replies.
1. Flashing custom roms will not unroot for phone flashing stock roms willl
2. Yes that lighting-of-backlit-buttons is a standard issue on cm7
3. Welcome to XDA
4. Before you post in development section please read the stickies(if u r on xda app) or the first 3-4 threads in general section (if viewing via browser)
5. Cm7 is awesome complaining about small issues will b neglecting the awesome features cm7 gives to your phone
6. Read the forum rules carefully and slowly or you may fall in trouble.
7. Always google for questions first b4 posting in forums ( i m sure your questions would have been answered by googling)
8. Best of luck

Yes I am sorry I had to ask questions that may well of been answered in detail with a google but I kept finding conflicting arguments about it so I thought best thing to do would be go to the most representable forum in the field and ease the pain of which was my question once and for all
And don't get me wrong, I was not complaining about the ROM I love it Just wanted to know if it was the ROM or me doing something that was causing the issues. If it was me - I would do it again if it is the ROM who cares - I know it will get fixed at some point
And thank you for the welcome post didn't get chance to check the rules correctly as I was at work when I registered and posted the first post haha Limited time while manager wasn't behind me hehe
I really like how you guys do not limit guests so they cannot see the development posts, that is really nice of the site. I was able to install the ROM etc, following instructions and links without being nagged to register and that alone made me want to register
Welcome to the forum. Word of warning - if you come accross a program called Rom Manager please leave it alone. Most people on here would agree that you can recover your phone from all kinds of mistakes made while flashing new exciting roms, best method - make a backup, but using Rom Manager may damage your phone irreversably.
Yeah I have heard about it all over the forum. Does it work well in any instance?

May work beautifully with some mobiles only have Ace and like you read the warnings onhere and elsewhere re Ace. Just amazes me how many use it 1st then come here to ask "What happened to my phone". You are definately off on the right foot by getting info here 1st. GL
By the way don't be surprised if all your posts disappear - getting to 10 is not this easy I know.

Yes I saw a full post about not asking for best rom.
Only thing I have asked for is a suggestion a "Must" try ROM as in a Rom that everyone should experience once So far it seems that Rom is the Cyanogen Rom I am currently running While I love so much.
Also, I am very very impressed with the XDA Android app!
Once I get to 10 posts I have a few inputs I am looking forward to getting into the development posts
Most rom's come pre rooted in order to function

Custom Rom & Lose Features or Wait?

Hey XDA,
I got my S3 at launch, and ever since I've seen some great Jelly Bean roms coming out I've been tempted to flash one on. My only problem is that I'll be losing S Beam, Smart Stay and Direct Call.
Just wondering if anyone who has already done so can give me some advice on weather it's worth it? Weather the Jelly Bean features outweigh the built in ones or not? Any feedback would be great, thanks.

Samsung is almost ready testing Jellybean for the S3, it will come out in about 6-8 weeks officialy. Maybe some leaked roms will pop up at Sammobile soon. If you only want to root for Jellybean i would not do it and wait for a little while.
If you want those features stock with Samsung based roms and wait for the official jelly, in the meantime check out a few custom s Samsung roms to keep the flash addiction happy
There's a few reasons I'd flash one of these roms on it. #1 being I for some reason am a massive vanilla android fan, and #2 being that I live in Australia and it will probably take them an extra 6 months to bring the official update here after it's released. Although, I did get the "Stability Improvement" update last weekend, a few weeks off the rest of the world, is that an indication of future updates being that quick also?
Thanks for your replies and I look forward to continue this thread to help me decide. One part of me is thinking how hard is it to touch the screen to stop it from sleeping, press a button to call someone, or use bluetooth to transfer files bigger than web pages. The other is saying what's the point of getting the latest and greatest smartphone to get rid of it's advertised features?
I think ultimately the answer is just flash it and if you don't like them just restore your nandroid! I've got 4 now, of different roms/kernels ....it's like having quad boot!

if you root then you can create a nandroid backup(complete system image) so I try different roms, if I like one I set it all up then do a nandroid, so if I want to try other roms and come back I just restore it, but now that this will lose your data between making that original nandroid and returning to it

Everyone's situation is different, hence why I'm asking. Also, I'm not "demanding" anything, I'm simply asking people who have already done what I'm thinking an opinion, and even developers can explain what the pros of using their software compared to stock if they so desire. I may be new to these forums, but I've been a part of the Android community since it's release so I don't appreciate being treated like a so called "noob" when if you calm down, sit back and think about it I have not broken any rules, and I posted it in Questions and Answers not the Development section so this is also the correct section.
To the other people who actually cared to share their opinion, thanks, and I think I'll give a few custom roms a go.

Nevertheless, you can compare your questions with other questions and answer them. Be it here or in other forums.
Because I do not think your question is "unique" and can not be answered with another question that has already been asked.
You must simply enter your title in Google and then you'll find massive pages, where the same or similar question has been answered.
Why I am so upset about it? I have already explained in my text.

But OP i would actually wait for JB release from Samsung .

[Q] Which ROM Do U Like Best? I want some advice.

First of all, I need to thank for all the ROM makers.
I'm a rookie of 9300... I want to flash a perfect ROM... So far I've tried Revolution HD, Omega and some other ROMs... Each of them has its advantage. Well, I haven't tried 411 ROMs. All I flashed are 404 ROMs. I just want a stable, smooth and battery friendly ROM.
I want to hear your advice. Which 404 ROM do you like best? And how about 411?
There are too many excellent ROMs!!! I just can't make the decision...
These kind of posts are not allowed on xda.
The best ROM is subjective.
Read through the OP of ROM threads and make your decision that way.

You misunderstood me, bro. I just want some suggestions. I know there's no best ROM. All of them are excellent. I asked which do you LIKE best, not which IS the best.
I admit there was something unclear, or something wrong in my post. I changed it a little. Anyway, I mean no harm.
Every GS3 phone is not 100% same. Two people with same rom may not have same user experience. Keep flashing until you found the one you like most.
Happy flashing

I don't think the OP asked for 'the' best ROM, he said, "I want to hear your advice. Which 404 ROM do you like best? And how about 411?" Seems to me that has opinion built in, not calling for some kind of judgement as to what is the only 'best' one.
@owensnoopy - Start with what you want from your phone. Use the ROM threads to work out what things are being altered or removed or added and see if you want those things or not.
Have a back-out plan - if the ROM you install isn't what you want, what is your fallback ROM? So far I have made sure I've got the stock version of the custom one I am flashing - my fallback is to that rather than going back to something I've already decided I want an improvement on...
I just flashed the 4.1.1 leak from Sammobile - seems to be performing well so far and my backups restored and (so far) haven't had the weird **** I saw with a couple of the custom ROMs I tried. I'm using Slaphead20's linked spreadsheet to work out what I want to remove. Once I have it how I want I'll save it out and tr4y some of the others coming in - DLI5 is leaked and will have custom ROMs based on it soon.
From Sammobile...
We of SamMobile would like to give you the latest I9300XXDLI5 Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean Test firmware for the Galaxy S III. I9300XXDLI5 is the most stable leak EVER. Almost all issues from the previous TEST builds have been fixed and we are very happy with this build.
This build is very much near perfect so we believe that Samsung will actually start rolling out the Official Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S III very soon. The day Samsung starts to roll out the official update you will be able to install the latest update through Kies or OTA update. We are getting leaks almost everyday so we believe that the final Official Jelly Bean update will be released in the next week.

I think the only way to have your 'perfect' ROM is to install something close to what you want and mod it for your own use.

I really like Wanam v2.3... It's smooth and battery friendly. You could also try different combinations of rom and kernel, that is one of the greatest things of android.
I'm addicted to flash right now! Just try!
OP, I understand you are just trying to get input, but opinions will vary, and so will how the rom runs on a particular phone. This will only cause problems here, so before it does I'm going to close this. Please try them out for yourself. :good:

[Q] New JB (4.1.2/4.2.2) ROM?

Well, after a while (too much time) with dual boot ICS ROMs - Stock 4.0.3 LPG & PFittech ROM 4.0.4 (with siyah kernel), I kinda lost with all the new ROMs, all looks the same but one have options that other haven't and vice versa....
First I wanna know if there is any stable JB ROM (AOKP, not intresting in Stock)?
The 4.2.2 ROMs are stable enough? what the main problems this ROMs have?
I made a pool, just to know a little bit more about the statistic (if someone will cooperate ) of how many users using each ROM, also can post here and share recommands...I want to flash a new ROM and hope to get some info before I'm doing that
Aokp 4.1.2 official is perfectly stable n works great with siyah kernel 5. Its has no problem at all.
Some roms 4.2.2 are not perfect.they work well but most of them have a very poor battery duration.
In my opinion the only 4.2.2 roms i d use d be: sentinel rom. Aokp. Slimbean. I tested a lot of roms 4.2.2( cm rootbox carbon hct thinking etc) n in this 3 i had no problems at all n good battery life( liquid smooth 2.4 is also great. But liquidsmooth team stop supporting our device so the rom file is lost)

Don't know where you find any mention to "bettet/best" rom, all I ask is if the JB roms are stable enough to flash (its been a while last time I've checked) and just for the record to know which rom ppl here using (from the above, cuz all of them looks almost the same)
I also would like to know if there is any bugs or something I should know about the new versions before I'm flashing it.
But if you don't want to help with this, its fine by me.
@Raagh - thanks for reply mate, good to know that the 4.1.2 versions are finally stables!
There are bugs, as always. We got threads about it and fixes for -almost - all of them.
There's no "better ROM" mention, you're right. Tho there are a couple of queries about how stable are those ROM you happened to mention.
You need to try them out one by one or you can read the 1000 pages of the official jb thread sticked in the general forum.
That being said there's no room for any advice on what ROM you should flash, so it won't be -as- a better ROM thread.

That being said there's no room for any advice on what ROM you should flash, so it won't be -as- a better ROM thread.

all depends oh what flavor you like ... all the ROM's have there own features dislikes and likes to every individual person... as in kernels as well its matter of preference of what you like ...good luck hope you find the one you like
Its perfectly clear that this is basically a "What is best rom" thread which is against the rules!
If you want to know what is the best/most stable or however you want to put you should TRY THEM AND FIND OUT!
All these type of threads do is result in the same subjective opinions nothing more, If you want those kinds of threads dont create new ones use the search button!
Also READ sticky topics!
Thread reported for obvious reasons!
Sheer laziness :-/
Maybe its because of the poll that I've opened you may tought its "another BEST rom thread".
Seems like some people here getting 'self-righteous', since the last time I've visited...
A simple question that become a spam one, thanks to the 'righteous' "guards" // AKA bootlickers.
I pretty 'seated' about flashing new ROMs, I know most of you don't, but I've flashed a lot of ROMs before I've got the two I mention at the first post, you can call it lazyness, I call it doing home-work before flashing 10 ROMs, I prefer focus on 2 or 3 ROMs to check...
Anyway, I have no idea how to delete the poll (some dumbs may thought its 'what is better rom' post because of this stupid poll, the aim was to see the distribution of the people who use these popular roms, but no one never choose anyway.)
Still - I've got my answers, thanks to @Raagh @gastonw and @slimlo for the informative answers, I naively thought it was a simple question and after a while people could direct me more to something specific.
You can close this thread, thanks again for the above guys and for the 'self-righteous'//bootlickers - hope you'll had a better popularity next time.
The question is, why shouldn't you flash & test a bunch of roms to find one that has what you want/one you like the same as almost everyone else here ? The whole point of hanging around a place like XDA is you like messing around with your phone - yourself. Not have everyone else do it for you.
If that's not your bag, you're probably in the wrong place.
Thread closed as its a Best ROM thread.
