[Q] 3G Data - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
How can I activate and use 3G-Data on my Galaxy Nexus running Ubuntu Touch? I can't find a way to do this. I thought it is activated by default because on the Homepage it says it is available.
Thank you for your help!

What network are you on? And all pu have to do us turn the mobile data switch.

What do you mean "What network are you on?"
Where can I find that switch? Most of the options in the settings don't even work. The screen just gets white
Thank you!

I was running ubuntu touch on my N4 and I had to manually turn on 3G mode... it connected but I didnt make any calls to test out because I dnt remember any of my friends number.. lol... I also was able to connect to my wifi at home...
the "switch" is at the top right, one of the icons... touch the icon and swipe down...

You can import your contacts from your Google-Account. Did you turn it on in the settings?

[ISSUE] How to prefer Wi-Fi to 3G

I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.
this is really pissing me off, whats the point of having wifi on a phone if the apps wont use it. i dont really care about the google location service if the data is through the internet, but atleast turn on.
lame.

[q] how come my wifi doesnt auto connect when i get to different locations

i would like it it if it would auto connect to wifi at home and then wifi at work without me having to do it manually... im using the eternity rom
+1 happens to me too..
you can use widgets to put the wifi icon on your screen(SwitchPro, Extended Controls etc.)

i have that and wifi is on but it wont auto connect to remember wifi
I my case, when I connect to wifi it remember's my last access...
It should work for you.
No, by auto-connect what he probably means is that when he changes region from A to B, even if he has B's wifi credentials saved, the phone does not auto connect. He has to go inside the wifi settings and click "Connect" manually.
This happens to me too. Just wondering if there is any workaround to this.
I guess theres no way around this?

[Q] How to do tethering/hotspot outside AT&T? APN settings?

I am still learning android...
I want to use tethering on my carrier in Venezuela, but when i try to enable hotspot it says i'm now allowed should call at&t and such... I know tethering and hotspot isn't the same, but i want to do the following:
-Enable personal hotspot on the phone to allow my laptop to connect to it and get connection (if somehow my home adsl connection drops and my phone is ok)
-Enable tethering over usb, so the battery doesn't suffer while being connected
I had to add my APN manually, a friend with the motorola milestone told me the apn name and settings and apn type is set on: default, dun
What are the possible values for this setting? I know from the tethering mod that it could be: default, agps, fota, supl, fota, tether. By the way we don't have tethering plans down here, do i still need this tethering mod? Because i haven't installed it.
would appreciate any input from you guys. I have searched google and there doesn't seem to be much info about apn types

For WIFI tethering, have your phone rooted and to where you can side load, and try this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
or this http://www.mediafire.com/?yzerk3nglqof1kk
(Not sure if the'll work because they didn't for me, but they did for other Atrix users)
And for USB tethering, thats easy, and for sure works. Try either Easy Tether (my favorite) : http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/android.html
Or PdaNet: http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
I managed to get this to work. I basically turned on hot spot then it loads up ands says connecting or something similar. Now put phone in flight mode. Then take out of flight mode. It should now connect. Worked for me. Im in the uk on hutchinson3.

You don't get the message stating that you need to call at&t for the tethering plan?

[Q] USB Tether times out while idling - when using torrents or otherwise

Hi,
I have got a new MTNL 3G connection (I am from India), and am trying to use the USB Tether option to browse and download from the internet. However, when I leave my phone / computer to idle, the connection drops. I was earlier on Froyo (2.2) and am now on CM 7 version 6.5.5.
Does anyone have the same problem? Is there a solution?
I have tried keeping the screen awake, screen timeout options etc. Have tried PDAnet and Auto USB Tether too.
Any help will be appreciated
Thanks
Mallik
try settings>wireless & networks>wifi settings>hit the menu button and choose advanced>wi-fi sleep policy>never
before i did this myself my wifi kept turning itself off whenever the screen turns off. im not sure if this will work for mobile data but it wont hurt to give it a try
U can try to connect the internet via dialup connection. I had this problem too.
N u can also access ur sd card with internet connection on which is not possible with usb tethering

I am using USB tether and not wifi. Dial up will not give me 3G speeds, and I am on cyanogen CM7, so don't know if dial up is possible. Net seems to be working fine right now. Maybe it's an area specific problem. But would want to know if anyone has figured out a solution.
Thanks
Mallik
I had this issue on Airtel 3G and CM7. It is fully fixed in the GB roms based on stock.
Yes dialup will give u 3g speed bt dnt knw it works wid cm7 or not bt i guess it should just check dat if ur system is detecting ur phones modem den it will surely works.

Can you turn off 3G on HD2??

Hi, i was just wondering if its possible to turn off the 3G on the HD2. I had an iPhone and a Desire where it was possible so was just wondering if its possible on this?
Many thanks, GS
Sure is: go to Comm Manager>Settings>Phone>(slide to tab)Band>Select Network Type. (choose GSM)
You may have 3G toggle in Comm Manager but dependant on your ROM (can be added)
Also these phone settings can be reached from Phone dailer>Menu>Options
And you may have a phone settings link also in windows Menu>settings>Personal>Phone
These instructions are assuming you are WM6.5-6.5.x ...
Ahh ideal. Thanks for the response.
Is there a way you can completely turn off the data connection? I dont want a permanant connection via 3G or GSM. I just wanna turn it off like you can on most phones. Is this possible?
Thanks, Darryn
