[Q] Galaxy s2 soft bricked with low storage - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright then. Description of my problem first I guess. I was not at home and running out of battery on my S2, but play store asked me to update some application so I agreed. After this I got the message that my phones internaly storage was running low, and keep in mind that I had near to no battery life (like 5%) and was not near any sort of charge point. I tried to access the applications page, to delete some apps that I never used and when I did my phone randomly and crazily got stuck and switched off. I'm assuming it somehow drained the 5% battery life I had left.
I got home thinking I could just switch on my phone and delete some applications that I wasn't using...that was 2 days ago...I can't even get past the samsung splash screen. It goes on a horrible boot loop and I've just about tried everything apart from hard resetting and I don't want to do that as I haven't backed my phone up recently...
If anyone knows any other methods, could you please please help? I would really appreciate it if I could keep my files and just enter my phone to delete a couple applications...which I'm assuming is the problem.

What have you tried? What firmware do you have? More info would be nice

yay for quick replies. I have tried cold booting, and soft resetting...I also went into recovery and cleared the cache partition to see if it would help and so far nothing... I have absolutely no idea what firmware I have and I have no idea how to check. I never tried to root my phone or install other roms.

OK so if you have no idea what firmware you was on don't reset Cuz if you was on 4.0.4 kiss good by to your phone. Was it ICS or jb? Do you know this? Pull battery out leave for a bit "5 mins" and try again. If that don't work and your not sure on firmware you need Odin to replace firmware yes data will be lost. Can you get to download mode?

[Q] Galaxy S II doesnt shut down (gets stuck while shutting down, not rebooting)

Hi everyone,
first of all I did search forum, but havent find answer nor related thread, if I have missed it please sorry about it.
Got my SGS2 about 6-7 months ago. No issues, everything perfect. Got updated to 2.3.4 with KIES (not really fan of experimenting with phone that have price of above average monthly salary in Serbia).
Rooted device with ZergRush exploit since I wanted as close to mint backup in case I have to send it to service(dont ask, service here is pain in the butt), purchased Mobile Odin Pro (cheers to that Chainfire) and flashed Hellcat's kernel for 2.3.4 from Mobile Odin.
Everything was cool, CWM, made EFS backup with his tool too, and so on...
However, about 2 moths ago, I started experiencing random restarts of the phone. Did search, found out that it happens and actually dealt with it.
Now, recently, i switched off my phone in the evening (was on 20% and didnt wanted to leave it on charger, and didnt want it to die on me during night), and in the morning I havent been able to turn it on. Freaked out badly, only to realize that its battery was empty. Which was odd because I DID turned it off.
About few days ago, i switched the phone, and it went to full shut down, however managed to get stucked somewhere in process (LED's are on, did vibrate i think) but never shuts down itself.
After some time, when I picked it up since I saw LED's on, i realized that its very hot and that I cant switch it back on (presumably because it never got shuts down) and had to remove battery so that I can switch it back on. When I did, i found out that battery was about 15% drained in that 10 mins, and I dont know what he was computing while shutting down, but it burned the sh*t out of itself.
Tonight it did that again so I decided to ask first before I do factory reset/wipe everything (maybe update to ICS too).
So, any idea, suggestion what to do is more than appreciated.
Cheers
Polite bump?
What is the actual problem .

Well assuming you have read original post, why the hell that happen, does it happen to anyone else, and how to avoid it?
this may help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499
Well, as I said, its not bootloop.
As I said, I shut down the phone, it starts shutting down, turn on leds, vibrate and stays turned on. After that battery drains quickly, and phone gets very hot.
When I get battery out, and back in it boots up without problems.
And I dont have any cooked rom, just Hellcats kernel for 2.3.4 stock rom.
you problem
Hi there,
Here's the best way to resolve this issue you have to re-flash a fresh new rom, meaning a full installation of the android os and here is how to do it,
First search google and download ODIN to ur computer or Pc.
Next search again google and type the following ( Sammobile.com ) and register and after that type the model number of your phone for example (i9100) in the site search bar and download rom that u need and thats it this should solve ur problem
Note : be sure to have 100% battery charged before doing the above and after installing ur new rom do a full wipe and enjoy,
I hope this was helpful,
Regards,
iMatrix
Yeah, thats probably that I will end up doing, luckily i have bought Titanium Backup so that I can backup all apps that I have and restore them after wiping everything.
I was wondering that somebody have any idea what might be going on.
Thanks for suggestions everyone.
before that try wiping cache and dalvik cache

This seems to happen quite a bit on gb roms.. definetely time to upgrade to ICS
Actually from what I have read about ICS 4.03, Im actually glad I didnt.
Releasing it in that state(e.g. battery issues again, 3rd party sms programs sends sms twice...) is bad for both G and Samsung imho...

[Q] More ICS Help Please...

My S2 has been turned into a gibbering wreck after I updated the firmware from GB 2.3.4 to ICS 4.0.3 using the standard Kies software. The firmware update looked successful but...
After the upgrade process the phone typically will only last 5 to 10 mins before randomly rebooting, the battery is fully exhausted from 100% after 2.5 hours (the battery also gets really hot) and generally the UI is highly unstable, i.e. prone to stuttering and freezing before then hanging or rebooting. In short, it's pretty much unusable.
My phone ran perfectly before the firmware 'upgrade', the UI was stable, the battery lasted approx 18+ hours with my useage and I virtually never suffered any random reboots. I had rooted it using the Zergrush exploit. I also have a 32GB card fitted and run Go Launcher EX (not Touchwiz), other than that the phone is fully stock. The phone is UK SIM free and unbranded (bought from P4U) using an UK Orange SIM.
Help what can I do? Is there a reset I can perform without loosing all my installed apps? Or am I going to have to do a full reset and re-install all my apps from scratch? Could it be something to do with the memory card, would a re-format of the micro-SD help?
I don't particularly want to do a full reset if I've then got to re-install all my apps (200+ Yeah, I'm an app junkie) but I get the feeling I won't have much choice as I can't leave the phone in its current state.
Thanks for reading. *sigh* I wish I'd just stuck with GB, if it ain't broke an' all that...
S.
Try a factory reset in the first instance.
If that doesn't help, you could either try a completely clean install of an ICS stock rom; check in this thread for unbranded UK & do a fresh install of your apps. Or you could do a fresh install of a GB stock rom; check that thread I linked you to in the first instance, if links are dead, search Samfirmware.com.
Re: your question about formatting your SD card, if you do either of the above, you may as well for good measure.
Edit to add - I don't have quite as many apps as you (~120) but whenever I install a completely new rom or a major version change (not nightlies), I always do a clean install. I find it's a few hours well spent.

Thanks for the reply Sorry to be a complete noob, but what would be the best method for a factory reset? Select the option from the relevant settings menu or key in *# code on the dialer? or doesn't it matter? I'm guessing the right code is either *2767*3855# or *2767*2878# would that be right?
Thanks again.
S.
Boot into recovery is how I've always done it. From memory you can do it from the settings menu as well on stock (it's been a while/hazy memory only used stock for a week 6 mths ago).
Yeah, it's probably one of those codes (I don't remember which as I've never used the code, only seen them in posts on here).

Ahh okay, Thanks again for your help. I think it might be a long night tonight.
*EDIT* Heh I just switched the phone on for the first time this evening and it's already rebooted within 5mins of coming on just being sat on the table. :|
S.
No probs. Good luck Post in this thread if you have any dramas/let us know how you go.
If your rooted, use titanium backup for your apps. Then reinstall user apps only after upgrade. Don't reinstall system apps.

Sorted...
All sorted! I can confirm that booting to recovery mode then performing a factory reset has cured my phone of all its symptoms, the gremlins have been banished, yay!
Big thanks to MistahBungle and all who helped... My UI is silky smooth again, my battery usage is back to normal if not a little better actually and greatest of all no more reboots every 5mins.
Although I didn't have to reinstall all my apps (approx 280 ish, sheesh ) since the phone automatically pulled them all back from Google Play (aka Market Place) it took an hour or so heh, I'm afraid all the apps have lost their settings so I am stuck with plugging all the settings in each time I start an app for the first time in ICS. Bit of a pain but could've been worse. Hmm, I've also got lots of bluetooth pairings to rebuild and wifi networks to re-aquire, oh well.
Next on the list...
I'll have to hunt down the easiest way to re-root too I have a need to re-install Orange's UMA client app, "Signalboost".
Thanks again to all.

Good to hear. Glad you got it sorted

SGS2 bootloop! Help!

Hi guys! First off, I know this sounds like a common problem, but I've looked through several times and haven't found a solution yet.
I have a SGS2, came as 2.3.3 stock but upgraded a while back to 2.3.5 through Kies. It was working perfectly for as long as I remember.
About a month ago the battery started acting weird going from 80% to 20% in no time, heating up too, I do remember dropping the phone once during this period, but it was nothing (just thought I should include this, also, I usually leave the phone plugged into the charger overnight as I do not have a power source at work (i work outdoors) i probably need a battery replacement)
The screen brightness would sometimes flicker and then POOF! The phone shuts off...At first this would happen at any activity, nothing specific, BUT, I have noticed that it intensifies with the Facebook app.
Anyways, usually plugging the phone back into the charger and powering it up would bring it back online, but not this time. It would get stuck looping the animation of the 'S' at the beginning and no booting up. I have a valid warranty card which I'm guessing will get the phone either fixed or replaced but I need help to try to salvage whatever info I can get my hands on, preferably everything, but my memos are most important to me.
Thanks for the help!

a friend suggested i try to flash the stock ICS version, same thing.

Weird. It shouldn't boot loop. You sure your version is GT-I9100 and not GT-I9100G? Since I'm in Riyadh, the latest version for GB here (Saudi Arabia) was JPKJ2, but that's for GT-I9100, dunno about the G version.

okay so with the help of a friend and this awesome forum, i managed to install cwm, from there i could take a nandroid backup, but i cant mount the phone as a drive or anything to copy the files, and i'm guessing i cant use this backup i just took to restore later because it'll just get me stuck at the same place im at now
i read that i can use unyaffs to extract files from the resultant backup image, so my question is, before i do a wipe, is there any other method through which i could get a backup of my stuff? the things i would very much like to get a copy off are my messages/notes/whatsapp history and pretty much anything really
thanks for the help!

[Q]Bootloop Issue

Ok, so my fiancee's at&t note is stuck in a bootloop. I had it running on Blackstar, and since giving it to her hadn't bothered messing with the setup as it was stable. On her way home from work she apparently left the phone in her truck while making a stop in 92 degree weather(Farenheit). Now it will show both Samsung screens and then bootloop. I did some searching here on the forums and have tried everything I can find/think of. Here's a list of everything I've done:
1. Booted into twrp recovery, wiped data, cache, and sdcard for good measure.
2. Got to lockscreen, bootloop.
3. Used ODIN to push Samsung stock files onto phone, including recovery.
4. Got to AT&T easy setup screen, bootloop.
5. Used stock recovery to do hard reset.
6. Still bootlooping from second Samsung screen.
7. Removed back of phone, cleaned power button.
8. Still bootlooping.
I should note that the phone never booted itself after a battery pull, but I figured cleaning the power button couldn't hurt any.
Is there anything else I can try before going to at&t to have it fixed?
UPDATE: Thanks rangercaptain for that. I had totally forgotten Kies had the Firmware recovery. Unfortunately, it didn't work. And AT&T, well, we all know how they are about out of warranty phones. So I'm seemingly stuck, but I did have a thought. If the battery overheated, and malfunctioned, could it cause this? Would it be worth the 10 bucks to order a replacement OEM battery on Amazon and see if it fixes it?
Kies emergency firmware upgrade. Factory cable. Rear (powered) usb port on pc. Battery fully charged. Serial and model number under battery (all capital letters). Pray.
Don't quote, reply. If you quote, edit.
The battery try might be worth a shot. If not.... Surely mobiletechvideos could fix it. If they can be brought back from the dead, surely they can be brought out of bootloop.

Definitely try the battery. I had exactly this same problem, and even though the old battery seemed to be taking a charge, it was still screwing everything up (in the same ways you described). A new battery fixed everything*.
* - Ok, it actually it took a couple ROM reinstalls, to fix everything I apparently screwed up while trying to fix the devices before switching out the batteries.
Thanks for the info. I went ahead and ordered a new bateery, it'll be here Monday, so hopefully that works. I have the phone flashed stock with Kies at the moment, so I would hope I don't have to do any more reflashing if the battery is the issue.
Yeah i have the same issue. I was running blackstar. I had some issues occasionally with it crashing, nothing major. decided to install JB once ATT had official out. Wiped, installed, gets to att logo and reboot... please post your fix if it works. I have a second battery. I'll give it a shot but I have been keepeing it plugged in while doing these things and it still doesnt work.
"Wiped, installed, gets to att logo and reboot..."
If you're getting to the att logo, it may not be a battery problem. I'd suggest reinstalling the update after manually wiping everything using CWM.

Tried a couple flashes, with the debloated and bloated Roms based on Official JB. I can get to the getting started screen sometimes. typically I hit the next button and it goes into bootloop. once or twice i was able to select the next button and get to the next screen before it crashed. I'm thinking it's dead but.... idk.
This fixed my issue...
Replaced battery and yeah. I'm all better. so odd.. shrug. The other wasn't giving any indication that it was actually defective.
Awesome ... final step ... change the title to include solved :victory:

Galaxy S2 won't turn on and overheat

Hi everyone,
I have my S2 since 4 and a half years. During this long life (for a phone) i was experimented some troubleshoot easy to solve. Now i have a tricky one. The other day the phone suddenly the image stuck freeze, so i remove the battery and turn on again. Then appear a screen telling me that "phone has unsuccessfully encrypted" so is necessary make a factory reset. On that screen only appear one button "factory reset". At that point i decide restart the phone and then is when this one never turn on again.
I have 2 batteries and is the same with both of them. Additionally the phone gets hot when the battery is placed on the slot.
Please if any have a advice to discover what is the problem and how to solve i will appreciate.

What firmware were you running on your phone? If it was ics 4.0.3 or 4.0.4, your device is probably doomed. If it was jelly bean or if you were running gingerbread or custom rom, there may still be hope.
Regards, gsstudios.
Im very sorry because the 8long time without reply. Finaly a get an old s4 from my dad, in order to whait for the new s7. Regarding to the s2: it was running CM lollypop. I sent it to a technical guy but i dont know what to do.
I think is death. To only thing i want by now is recover some pictures and some important data from the phone.
