[Q] Changing launcher to lower RAM usage - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
My SGS3 is using 720+ MB of RAM out of 833 MB. It doesn't create much problem when I'm using it normally, but there's a very noticable lag while playing games. Also, when I'm normally using my phone, there's a lag when 2-3 basic apps (like Messaging, Whatsapp etc) are running.
I'm thinking of changing the launcher from TouchWiz to Nova Launcher or something. Will that help me with lowering the RAM usage?
If not, then please suggest me something.
Note: I'm also using Greenify to hibernate many processes, because otherwise my phone is very very laggy.

Greenify can't hibernate system apps, Samsung bloat their rom with many apps that you won't use but can't turn off.
Get titanium pro, convert all the Google apps you need to user apps then hibernate them. Then use titanium to freeze all the bloat you don't need, there are lists here on xda of the ones safe to freeze.
Launcher is easy to replace, but won't make much difference to memory.
I'm on a custom lite version of EMG4, usually with 300+ Mb free. The phone is snappy and responsive, even with power saving on.

1) Can you provide me with a link to that list? Although I've disabled many apps using Application Manager in Settings.
2) Can you provide me with a link of the custom ROM you're using?

1) stickied at the top of the themes and apps section

NeatROM; although it doesn't really matter, try a few and see which suits you best.
You are best off reading through the stickied guides before you flash or freeze anything, as you can brick your phone and break the warranty both at the same time.

Bloatware with custom rom?

Hey guys,
I am soon going to enter the rooted world of android and flashing roms on my note. Is there still a reason to remove bloatware from the phone when running a custom rom? Will the bloatware apps still be running or will they merely just be taking up memory in the storage?

The answer largely depends on which rom you choose..
Most custom roms are relatively bloat free, unless you are wanting to use a rooted stock variant build ...
And with regard to running bloat, the answer is yes ...
Apps like Google maps, navigation apps etc. Will often run in the background as available services, even when closed.
But you can use titanium backup and other similar apps, to "freeze " these applications....g
Edit : I always remove my bloat .....even from stock builds ....by freezing a suspected app for testing....
Then if all is well and stable ....I dump it ....g
Takes up space
possibly running in the background
things you may never use anyway
can add as you want after the custom rom
They fixed the battery drain issue with Google maps...don't worry about any Google services.

Have been using TiB for 2 years now and never had a problem because of frozen apps. But you have to know which app to freeze. Freezing is just like uninstalling so be careful with system apps. Normally rather than freeze, I just uninstall apps and restore from backup with data if required. But you can freeze apps like Maps, may be useful for that.

It also helps if You have multiple launchers, You could freeze the launchers which You don't use, Which will lead to a better battery life and user experience
Always making a backup before doing anything helps a lot .. You'll need it trust me ^_^

Not much Ram

Hey
I don't know if this is normal but some of my apps tell me that I'm running on low ram :/
My Free Ram is between 30-60 mb. and I want to ask you if this is normal and what can I do to improve it ?
I'm already using Ram Manager Pro and Greenify :/
Maybe because I flashed a few Mods but I don't know or how to delete them...

Delete some unnecessary apps with titanium backup... Get clean master from play store and delete cache with it.. Remove ever task killer and apps that say that they will double up your battery.... This will atleast make your device run faster and free up some ram

Okay, thx. But how can I delete apps which a installed with CWM like this Audio mod Noozeewire or sth. like that. ?
And do you mean I should only have the apps you showed in the background, because Facebook automatically gets in the background if I open it one time and close it :/ Same for some other apps :/ . And after a few seconds my Ram gets lower again ....

Remove unwanted apps with Titanium backup and also.... I doesn't mean that you need to have only that apps shown I I'm sceenshot and also Facebook always runs in background you can force close it but if you use it frequently then it hard to force close it every time after using it. so force close apps that you don't use daily like maps etc..

You can't remove it if it replaces system apps because it can corrupt your system but if it is just a another app that has nothing to do with system.. Then you can remove it

4.4.2 Stock de-bloating list

So I've always tried to keep my roms as light as possible, as I don't use many LG functions. Thought I'd share my list!
All the applications listed are frozen with Titanium Backup. Hope someone else will have use for this

A lot of the bloatware can actually be uninstalled. Just be sure to have a Nandroid backup ready (don't do this if you don't have a custom recovery and a backup), because uninstalling some things can cause a Security Error when you try to boot. I found out the hard way yesterday that uninstalling LGSmartcardService will cause that error, but I was able to remove a lot of other things.

It would be helpful if you can list out the 'Safe to Remove' bloatware if possible,
Right. But the /system partition isn't really readily available for anything useful, so I settled with freezing it at the moment. I've heard of people running into trouble when actually removing the apps before as well, beware!

how come everyone freezes music and videos. what do you use for music that is better than whats built in?
with these apps frozen do you have alternates you use that are less intrusive and memory hogs

If you freeze LGSetupWizard you could get FC when plug-in headphones.

I use Spotify, Google Music for local content! I don't watch other videos than those in my gallery, for which I use the Photos app that comes with Google Plus.

You'll need a root explorer. The apps are in /system/app and /system/priv-apps.
BUT BE CAREFUL!!! If you remove the wrong ones it won't boot.
There's a thread I think in the International forum that has apps you can remove. We'll have some different apps though.
If you remove the wrong app and end up not booting, you'll either have to use adb or LGFlashtool to fix it.
Im sure someone will have a list shortly.
"System app remover (root)" from the play store works great for me. It makes app backups before uninstall.
You might be better off using Titanium Backup to just freeze apps first, to see if they affect other things unexpectedly. Then you can remove them after a test period.

THIS!
Also if you can be patient until recoveries can be taken care of then back ups can be done to help insure a trouble free device.

Agreed, unless you only uninstall apps that are obviously safe to remove.
With 3gb of ram, just freeze apps.

freezing vs removing an app has nothing to do with ram.
For OP, if you have TiBu use that to remove apps. There's a link somewhere in the general G3 forum here that shows which apps are safe to disable, which typically means they are safe to remove as well.
What I was saying is there is plenty of space on root partition. Freezing won't delete the app, but rather prevents it from launching. IMO this is the best way to go. Less crap running, less lag, and you don't have to delete files.
This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/general/guide-how-to-restore-sprint-lg-g3-ls990-t2852042
After following this procedure I have no more sprint apps on my phone.
The image provided didn't have them pre-installed.
That's another way to go about it. Safer? Probably not than freezing.
