[Q] Any word on ME7 unlocked boot loader? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Just got my S 4 a few days ago. BestBuy guy fiddling with it updated it to the ME7 build of which I had no idea couldn't get boot loader unlocked for yet. If I had known that at the time, I wouldn't have been letting him mess with it so long. Anyway, I am on ME7 and rooted..thank goodness that's available at least. Any word on the unlocked boot loader? Est. time on how long it takes to crack these things? I'm coming up from the SIII which I loved flashing new ROMs and fell in love with CleanROM, Hyperdrive and Bonestock. It's kind of a bummer I got my S 4, which I love btw, but I can't put that awesomeness on it yet. Any info would be great! Thanks everyone and as always Android>iOS woooooooooo
BTW Thank you to whom ever may be working on this. You guys are the best!

If it's within 14 days, you should be able to exchange it. Just say you want a different s4. You might have to pay a minor restocking fee. It's up to you if it's worth it.

Oh duh I totally forgot about that. It's definitely worth it for me. I love my custom ROMs.
One more question...Will it ask me to update? Or do it automatically? I've had so many Android phones but I'll be damned if I can remember if it asks or not.

It will ask you to update right when you turn it on most likely. Some users said it automatically updated overnight. So make sure you root and rom it immediately once you get it to stop that.

Or he can freeze the sdm.apk to prevent it from doing it.

I was asked to apply the OTA and I ignored the the messaged all day at work. When I got home, I plugged my phone into my computer only to charge it and it automatically applied the update. Also, I had Kies set up to NOT open or update when plugging in my phone.

Yup, i'd suggest just saying the update was giving you a problem and you factory reset a few times and you still have spotty reception or something, or just switch colors if it doesnt matter to you.

Did the same from verizon.. started to give a story about how something wasnt working right and the guys was like i dont care heres a new one.. lol i was worried there would be a problem. As for freezing there two files you want to freeze I found the info here on xda. As for the white phone theres a guy I work with that has a dark silver case and it makes it look awsome. If i see him tonight Ill link the case name.. Its almost grey and covers all the white except the smallest inner edge around the screen and it makes the screen pop.

Yes within 14 day period. They didn't even inspect my phone or ask me anything. I just said new firmware had issues and also I'd like a black one instead. If you are going to BestBuy be sure to get their phone insurance through Geeksquad, that stuff is great.

If you were me.....

If you were me, what would you do in this situation? I had to get a replacement Note 2 and the replacement thankfully came with the VRALJB software installed. I deferred the update to L4 for 5 days.
Would you just root and unlock the bootloader now the easy way, or take the L4 update and do it the harder way? Would either way be beneficial or does it not really matter?
Thanks!
Go ahead and unlock/root. You don't have to do anything further if you don't want to and you never know how difficult it would be to unlock in the future.
When I purchased mine outright it had the older software. I used the jailbreak method and that worked like a charm.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Either way. Just do it on the current software and save a step. Same end result.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
As others said doesn't matter. Once you flash aROM you could just flash the LL4 radio and it would be the same as the OTA.
So I guess Odin didn't fix your last one?

mine came with the ota last Saturday night, i waited til Monday to root just because I've always had htc phones, had to get familiar with touchwiz. took me 10mins to root after i couldn't take all the bloatware anymore

Good idea. I thought with that failure it went black with no signs of life, but haven't read up on it. It was a strange that Odin of stock didn't fix it for him.... That's usually a guarantee unbrick

Yup, I had the S3 for a while and was over there. Yeah man, I was chatting to the developer of the Jedi ROM and I sent him the meta folder of the ROM that I flashed for beta testing and he saw some problems. He said it was touching some partitions that it shouldn't be touching.
Anyhow, I guess I learned the hard way to be careful of testing ROMs from devs that I don't really recognize.
Time to root this bad boy and get back in business lol.

Getting a dna soon any advice

So im coming from a nexus. Its a good phone and all but I figure I'd try HTC for once. I got it for $99 on Amazon. Abby way what's the statue on root or a boot loader unlock. Also what's the difference in the a nexus is vs the dna. Also is there anything I should know or do when I receive my new device. Thanks for the help

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

Read the threads.
No HTCdev, no unlock of bootloader of any kind currently.
Oh okay so I read that wrong. So we can't even downgrade to a previous version or that requires root and an unlocked bootloader. Also if my device is on 2.x no root goodness for me huh?

Women can justify buying the same damn shoes and clothes in different shades of the same color, getsing jtagged should not be questioned.
And then oddly enough they complain when they see another in the same dress. Exclaiming how she stole her idea. Not even thinking she just might have the same taste in clothes but oh no that "B**** better get out that dress 'cause I wore it first"

You said what most of us think when we ponder a purchase that has to be approved by the gatekeeper/wife.
haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

I don't know what it is with me but I'm honestly tired of using CM and AOSP for awhile. I've been enjoying Viper so that I can still get a breath of fresh air from Sense... even though most don't appreciate Sense. Honestly wish I could put a Sense variant on my N7 too just to change it up.

Yeah I know what you vanilla gets bland for awhile. I can't get past two hours screen time on my nexus. And that's with the extended battery. At least sense is adding sprinkles and chocolate syrup to vanilla. Anyways what about face palm or whatever. Anyway my device will be here Monday thinks for the info I've only had Motorola and Samsung phones so HTC is a breath of fresh air

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.

New Software Update 07/29/13

I am on an me7 build and it is still trying to push me an update. Any word on what this one might contain?
Could be a root patch. Avoid it like a plague. If you take it and lose root, you're on your own.

Either a mistake, or funky timing. That is unless Samsung and VZW have banded together to lock this device down with extreme prejudice. Seems too fast of a reaction time for that. All of their people were off when root happened- Unless they have a weekend warrior strike force!
I really doubt this is to patch root, but i am for sure not going to be the one to find out Thats way to fast of an update to just patch a root exploit, i wonder what the update is really for
Both of the known exploits are well known to Samsung and have been known about since before ME7 was released. You're making it sound like they put this update out in reaction to the program that was just recently put out to take advantage of one of the known exploits. Do we even know for sure there is an update? Is it confirmed by more than one person? What version is it?

Weekend warrior strike force. Lol but seriously they a can work from home you know. They can call people in. That's what they get paid for. Its in their job description.
As soon as Dan or whoever spoke about the 2 exploits that were working but tried to keep it secret from the masses Verizon and Samsung were hard at work on this. They are smarter than anyone here. And that is in no way a jab at anyone here. They are where they are for a reason.

I guess it might have just been a fluke. I should have taken a screenshot but it didnt really give me any pertinent information in the upgrade message ao i figured it would be pointless. Lemme see if i can make it happen again. Im a flashaholic anyways. Maybe i can get it to download without flashing.

[Q] ME7 exploit status?

I hate to ask this, but, I am curious as to the status of the VRUAME7 bootloader unlocking. I haven't seen any status updates since the bounty thread was closed. I'm aware root has been achieved, but seeing as I just got my S4, I'd like to experiment with different roms a bit.
Thanks.
Agree
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. If anyone has any information about this that would be awesome!
I hope soon - with over $5k in bounty, it shouldn't take long. LOL
It better be soon because I'm so sick of not having TWRP lol. 5k bounty should be more than enough!

I'm debating whether or not to return this for an MDK version, because I really don't want to wait for shipping, and I've been really impressed with the S4 coming from an iPhone.

Hi im new to the forums and pretty knew to modding phones, but i was wondering the status of this as well? and when any of the developers here on the forum think that maybe the bootloader will be unlocked? A family member passed away so i kinda of inherited the phone and i want to use it since its newer and better than mine but they had updated it to ME7 so im stuck now i guess until they can crack it Also i wanted to ask if since that might take a while, if its possible to like reset the phone to factory settings and would it put it back to MDK maybe? or is there a way to like flash it back to MDK or something so i would be able to root/unlock the bootloader then? If not its fine i guess ill have to wait. But i had cynogen on my old phone (the original droid lolz) and it was awesome so i was hoping i could put that on the S4 as well and get rid of all this crap bloatware on it too. ahh damn that sux sry that happend lol. soo much for that idea i guess lol T_T what about restoring it to factory settings like through the option on the phone itself? Will it just like reset and wipe everything but not rollback the version? Thanks for your response and with the bounty being so high and they managed to get a root for it pretty quickly i really hope they can unlock the bootloader so we can put custom roms on it soon :/
Useless thread...
Don't you think the news will be all over XDA if anyone does unlock the bootloader of the S4?
Hint: It's not because they haven't managed to unlock it yet and probably never will.

You do realize an exploit similar to Loki would do the same thing an unlocked bootloader can do?

Is it possible a future update may unpatch it?

I hate to ask this, but, I am curious as to the status of the VRUAME7 bootloader unlocking. I haven't seen any status updates since the bounty thread was closed. I'm aware root has been achieved, but seeing as I just got my S4, I'd like to experiment with different roms a bit.
Thanks.

In an attempt to answer the question, I've been following this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2384222&page=23), but I haven't seen any updates on the last few pages.

It's just as likely as the oceans completely evaporating overnight.

The best we can hope for out of future updates is that they have a vulnerability that's easier to find than whatever's still waiting to be discovered in ME7 (if any such vulnerability is hiding there).

Yes and you do realize me winning the Powerball 25 consecutive weeks is more likely?
I believe in the devs here, many are working on it and too much time has passed w/o results, I believe if some exploit were possible it would have been found by now.
Sorry to be pessimistic but I think Samsung got it locked permanently and forever and, sorry to say it, but this probably means all future devices will arrive permanently locked down. :crying:
I'd sure love to be wrong about this.....

the motos got unlocked over 6 months after release, and that was considered by many to be completely impossible. Seeing this phone is more popular I think the chances are better, just will take time!
I put in an RMA with Negri electronics, and they're going to exchange mine for an MDK phone. Really should have done my research before updating...

To be a good or greedy husband?

I need some advice. I've got a locked GS4 on ME7 and I've been dying to flash ROM's since I got it. I just purchased my wife a new GS4 in white the color she wanted on eBay, it had never been activated and has MDK on it! The dilemma of course, should I keep the new one give my wife my black mist and hope she doesn't care, or do I bite the bullet and give her the MDK?!?!?!?
I'm leaning keeping MDK for my greedy self, am I a bad guy?

You are not being greedy! You want your wife to have the latest and greatest...the best. So give her the ME7 updated phone...its more secure, you are ensuring her safety. You will step up and take one for the team and use the MDK phone. What a guy! She doesn't even deserve a husband like you!

Honesty is the best policy. Ask her. She won't mind.

Agreed. My wife wouldn't even have to think about it, she would tell me to keep the MDK phone because she knows its a hobby I really enjoy and she also knows that I'd be trying to ROM her phone otherwise.

+1 Lmao.
I'd be asking to borrow her phone every couple minutes to flash new ROMs. :victory:
Lol! Good point with the newest greatest. Haha

Laughed when I read this...situation reversed over here, my husband don't like to tinker but I'm a recovering "flashaholic". I got my replacement phone with MDK on it (thank goodness) flashed Eclipse and running that ever since. When I first bought the phone I had flashed a new rom every few days which initially led to me getting a replacement because something got fried. Just be leary of flashing AOSP too much...or doing the AOSP/TW switch-o-ro, I hear that tends to not agree with our phones too well...
Otherwise I say thanks for a good laugh and I hope you enjoy

Let us know how you decide to handle your predicament . I personally like the "latest and greatest" solution.

Looks like she's getting MDK.... I guess she already has her heart on a case that only looks good on the white S4. It's okay I'll still hack it before she gets it....
Happy wife happy life right?
