Firmware upgrade encountered an issue, Kies & Odin do not work - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

PLEASE HELP!! When in boot the firmware upgrade encountered an issue message appears. I have 1st tried Kies, downloading drivers and troubleshooting still nothing. I then have tried odin with stock restore and I get a fail each time. I have checked usb cords they are in good condition. I have exhausted all options that I know of. Any help would be soooo much appreciative!!! Thanks!

Do you know what build you were on prior? Looks like youre on the me7 ota and youre trying to flash mdk which you cant do.

I was in the same situation. I apparently use a pit file to get out of this error
The pit file should be locatable in the S4 Android Development section
Flash it and you will be as good as new

Yes i was on me7 I was one of people that did accept update after being rooted. I was ok with it because of new updates that were really needed. I have flashed stock restore tar file. what would be the right file to flash?

You need the me7 odin file from the dev forums. you were attempting to flash mdk and thats why you were getting the errors.
This is the link to the no wipe versions so you wont lose any apps and associated data. Just make sure you grab the me7 version.

have your tried checking the MD5 or just re-downloading whatever rom you are trying to PUSH? Also check which version of ODIN you have. Like issues with the Charge, Notes seem to have an issue playing with the Odin interface.
All im pushing is the twrp and su for root . I have v4 of odin the newest v

1st are you already rooted. If you are, you should be using recovery to flash new ROM's not Odin.
2nd. Not sure how much this will help, but try Odin 3.07

not rooted. trying root for the first time on this unit. ill look for an older version thanks for trying to help out:good:
First, I'd say ditch the toolkit and do it manually. At least when it fails, you'll have a better idea of where and what was going on. Where is it failing? Is your device recognized by Odin if you try manually? Have you installed drivers for the phone?

should now look for a rooted stock firmware like this http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyNote2/SCH-I605/rooted/root66_VZW_stock_system.tar.zip
im a bit new to this style of rooting. im used to the .zip stuff. im guessing this new way of doing things is because of the bootloader being on lock down?

I'm not sure who posted that one, but that is correct. Have you checked to see if you have a pre-ota rooted stock rom? I would check the android thread about rooting and using odin to make sure there's been no changes. Odin is usually pretty easy to use (ONCE you get it to recognize the correct drivers.)
It is a new phone so I would guess not but ill look and read more. Thanks a lot

[Q] From Vruame7 root to stock MDK?

So i did the ME7 update and i rooted it, but i hate not having a bootloader, so with a stock tar file and odin would it be possible to go from ME7 to MDK stock and then root and get a bootloader? Or would i possibly brick my phone because of going back in firmware, is this plausible at all? Ive found a website that easily explains it, any ideas?
Nope, not possible.

You cant go back to mdk from me7 like jae said. Me7 has a bootloader, all android devices do. Me7 blocked the loki exploit for the bootloader, so no custom recovery at the moment.

Android 4.3 Build VRUEMJ7

Hey Guys if you read this article you will see that in the new OTA it will unlock LTE band 4.
So here is my question... Being MDK LOKI rooted will I be able to flash the modem and get the band 4 or will there be stuff in the kernel that we will need?
My real question is.. will we be able to use the new Band 4 eventually being rooted?
+1 for this question also. Being rooted on mdk with recovery I am getting close to letting go for 4.3 cause I have a gear watch that's doing nothing. I haven't needed any ROMs since my x and RAZR, so I could settle with root only but would b nice to keep most and reap the benefits without selling out my mdk framework. I'll grab beans or cm10 at that point. I know its a tough question without a sign of the ota yet
We just have to wait till some of the devs get a hold of the OTA and tear it apart.

For what it's worth, someone posted a link to the OTA file and I downloaded it. It looks like the modem file is done via a patch instead of the OTA including an actual flashable .bin file. I'm guessing someone will have to install the OTA and pull the modem file from the phone itself.
I came to ask this same question. For once, the stock rom has something I want that I can't get. It's usually the other way around. I'm sure the devs will have a flashable file to get LTE band 4 sometime soon. And that's why I love the android developer community!

Exactly. We need someone who took the ota and kept root before anything can be done.

Since you're returning it, you should flash the full-wipe emergency recovery ROM image. That'll clear the custom status and remove all of your data.
Is this a Odin file? I would assume so as u don't have anything cwm or anything related I heard something about using the update software tool on o
Pc as well idk

Yes, it's an image that you flash using ODIN. Yes, you can use the Verizon recovery assistant as well as Kies to recover. Your call.
thanks man! unfortunatly the link on this the odin file is not found do u happen to have a odin file on here? not sure if it is version specific?
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189539 . If that fails, google odin 3.09 it's widely available.
Thanks worked great for my new phone came with 4.2.2 so now need to look into root and safest rap it kenec or what have you best place to start?

From Jellybomb MJ4 to KitKat Killer NAB

Going from MJ4 Jellybomb to NAB KitKat Killer
Follow these links precisely in this order. This process assumes these things:
You already have Odin and the drivers for your device.
You are already on a rooted MJ4 Jellybomb ROM
You have already played around with your device before and will not blame me if you break it.
This is a painless process and shouldn't take more than a couple hours to download everything and install. I am using Odin v3.09 as I find this works the best on my Note 3 and never causes problems. If you do not see your device in Odin this is another thing all together, and you need to find the drivers.
Odin each file in the AP slot, this used to be known as PDA. Reboot after each Odin flash let the device sit for a minute then on to the next. Odin v3.09 will already have the 'reboot' option checked by default.
Do not wipe anything until you get the recovery back onto your device.
At this point it is up to you. I wiped System, Dalvik and Cache only and have had no difficulty.
EDIT HERE: To make it even easier here is a link to Odin as well thanks to @daerragh

First of all I am glad this helped you. You shouldn't need the engineering boot-loader unless something got messed up. If you just want it for future ability to flash basebands then yes. Being NABbed (yeah) is a prerequisite to flashing @freeza boot-loader.

Now that we have the full restore files for both builds, just flash stock MJ4, back up your internal memory to your computer, flash the complete stock NAB tar or one-click, and go from there.
Those tar files bring you to official status, the second plants NAB on your phone, after which time you can flash recovery and either root, or go straight to K3.
Not a bad idea to factory reset your rooted MJ4 phone prior to flashing the stock MJ4 file, as it will save you some time.
Just follow the OP.
It's super easy, fun for the whole family.
