AOSP vs Samsung ROM question. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are any of the Touchwiz based Roms as fast and snappy as AOSP based ROMs?
I love AOSP speed but missing features keeps me going back to T/Wiz then lag sends me back to AOSP etc etc etc
Thanks
Phil

I was running for some time null rom, AOSP style but based on Samsung

I assume who has more does not matter, it matters for him what he wants and AOSP does not have Samsung's features.

Thanks for the replies, the main problem was not being able to post pics direct to forums I go on. I may have cracked this by using chrome rather than the aosp browser but I thought that with Firefox too and this no longer works.

Cyanogenmod issue need help !!!
i recently installed the Cyanogenmod 10.1 on my GT-I9305 but after the i realized that the old storage is gone "internal storage" so it says that i am using more than 50% from it even it's a clean install meaning the old data are still there and i am not able to see them , so i went to the recovery mode and the old files and date were there and a new folder with name (0) has the new apps and data , so the question here is how can i view the old data storage so i can move them to the new one , or to view them on my computer , i am new in XDA so i couldn't post it on the Cyanogenmod forum . thanks in advance

This is not I9305 forum .
Don't hijack threads with a totally different question
Please read sticky in General section regarding storage o or just search question asked day after day .Please read all the basics before flashing anything .

I actually don't mind the Samsung s planner and the music play. I have tried many alternatives of both, but still haven't found an alternative I like better.
Im all ears if you have any suggestions for alternatives to try

Personally , I am very happy with SlimBean (AOSP) as it delivers speed and gives me all features I want. The only thing I miss is the AllShare app for my AllShare Cast Dongle. Regarding camera, the AOSP 2.6 app gives most of the Samsung TW features, for Samsung S Planner, I use the stock Google Calendar App and for Music I use Poweramp, maybe try them, Poweramp got a free version as well.

Pure ICS?

Ive tried out many roms both aokp and aosp as well as stock, but is there a rom out there that is just pure ics? Eg stock minus touchwiz and Samsung apps and nothing else changed?

Try the likes of SlimICS in the Original Android Development section. It, however, has quite a few apps removed, or you could use a stock ICS ROM, install Apex Launcher, and Root Explorer, delete Samsung Apps and the Touchwiz Launcher and keep all your favourites. Simple!

There is actually a rom called "pure ics", Did you even bother searching?
Why would you even want pure ICS when you can have CM9?
Clearer definitions needed.
By "pure ICS" and "stock" do you mean AOSP-like or the stock firmware that came on the handset in the first place?

AOSP like would be ultimate. Just a stock 4.0.3 rom that has had all samsung addons removed. Basically what a Galaxy Nexus has. All of the custom roms I have seen (even the so called Pure ICS rom) have been modified to perform better or adjust battery life, themed etc.
I would just like to try a pure ics as released by Google, I'd that's possible. Thank you.

Touchwiz Apps

So ive been in a constant search for a JB ROM that would include the TouchWiz apps for too long now. I mainly miss Snote and SMemo, and the spen functions it had. I have alternatives and the last PA update has some Spen GESTURES but its not the same. Also, i really want the new gallery and the Samsung camera back, the camera was bult with many great features and the new gallery is just crazy. If anyone knows where i can atleast get the Gallery that would be good enough. Any thoughts ppl?

You really need to read. All jb roms we have for our Note dont support Touchwiz. If you want want all of those goodies, flash Padawan. Thats an ics rom but it feels like a JB rom. Pls read next time, pretty much everyone knows we cant use any of the apps you mention on any jb roms. GL ps: you must be new to all these

I've tried padawan and i didnt like it. It was too choppy and ICS, im running JellyBean because i want jelly bean. Also, i can Read, i saw the post you took the padawan reference from already. This post is to get people working on getting those apps too work with JellyBean since it obviously can be done as we've seen with previous Android versions it just takes time. And im not "new to all these" you didnt even word that correctly. I work in IT and I've been flashing for a year or so and customizing my ROMS. So kiss my ass

OP, first I have notice your opening of threads, that if you search would find the answers...
The types of app are not supported by Jelly Bean bottom-line.
If you want those apps there alternate app for the one you are inquiring on via GPlay Market or simply find a ICS ROM, there ICS ROM still being developed and or cooked in these threads, here is the Super GNote page with all the listing of the ROMS.

New ROM, missing a couple of APKs

Hi Guys
I've just installed a new super lite ROM which seems pretty much perfect EXCEPT i'm missing two features of Samsung's "bloat"ware that I really like:
Blocking Mode
Stay Awake
I've tried Googling and failed miserably to locate these so, can anyone tell me where i can get these please? (Yes I know there are alternatives but i'd like to stay with apps I am happy with and that work for me)

Of they are only apks & libs you could extract them from a stock Rom and put them into yours I guess.

What is the ROM based on?
Is it Sammy or an AOKP based ROM?
If it's Samsung Based, I could take a Titanium Backup of it and send it across to you.

Guess I'll have to look for market place alternatives then.

There is no single perfect rom for everyone.. Everyone is different and has different needs or "cravings"
Thats also why there's so many custom roms out there, to fit your needs (sometimes) If you cant find one, go with stock or learn to make your own.

Is there a custom ROM with native video calling feature?

I recently got the stable cm9 release for s2 and I noticed the video calling option is missing. Is this the problem only with cm & aosp based ROMs? Would the Samsung based roms have this feature? I've Googled for it but found nothing specific to this phone. Can anyone help?

I used to use cm9 but I don't remember exactly whether there was native video call, but everything was fine, maybe you have enabled use only 2G settings in the settings.. Duh!! and maybe that's the problem, well all stock based custom roms do support video calling and I'm pretty sure most AOSP and AOKP do support video calling.
Edit : my bad, Only stock based roms does support video calling.

No I've unticked the save battery option. It is definitely on 3g network.
Can you please link me to a stable release I can try this out with? I am referring to the video call option that comes with the phone and contacts apps on stock rom. I read a post here on xda stating that custom roms don't have the patenting license to use native video calling. Can someone verify this?

I don't know my region doesn't have 3G so I can't try it out, but I am definitely sure that statement is wrong, I am using NeatRom and it definitely has video calling option, and I am sure such a basic feature will be in most roms. Maybe Pure Google based OS like cyanogenmod might have some limitations since after all they warned them to take out Google Apps from their Roms, but no Rom builder would ever remove important features from a stock rom, so try stock based custom roms like Omega, NeatRom.. Likewise...
Edit :It seems AOSP can't work with video calling, but stock based roms don't have these limitations.

Thanks I'll try neatrom first and then omega. But I am so happy with this stable cm9 release. Oh well.

If you're missing video calling, you might soon miss h/w decoding like that of stock based roms,
And eventually maybe wifi direct, radio etc.
Wifi Direct is the thing which is holding me with NeatRom. I've got a tab and file sharing, never gets easier and faster than with a wifi direct in a S2. But I will jump around though, too addicted to tweaks and customization.

No.
According to my information, android does not has native video calling support.
All the oem's add it as an optional feature on their devices.
So cm9 wont have native video calling support.
If u want to use video calling, u can use stock based custom roms such as omega v23...

Yes mate, I think he gets that, after all we came to a conclusion and he has decided on flashing NeatRom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, well, I checked some stock based roms but the latest ones are huge files, especially the one everyone is recommending here, Omega. My 3g plan allows only 2gb download per month, and if I download 650 mb file, that too with its inherent bugs, I'd be doomed.
So I went into the pages trying to search for a stable stock rom based release, and I found this, (sorry, too lazy to search the LINK, google it)
--VK--ICS-XWLPX-V5.4.5-Ripple-Final
And I've been using it for 2 days and not even a single force close or reboot or whatever. No bugs, and this is a first for me for any rom I used. Also, better battery than the stock rom too. And the customizations look awesome as well. Can be used as a daily drive. All for just 300 MB. I'll stop hunting for a while now. Thanks for your help, people.

Have you had a look at Chameleon ROM? I've never personally used it so can't give you an exact run-down. It is stock based, with all AOSP apps apart from FM radio and Camera (& some background apps).
Give it a go & see what you think.

Please suggest a ROM with TouchWiz framework

Hi guys!
I'm currently on the 4.3.1. CM, but I'm really disappointed by the camera app as it has no HDR and the video is stuttering. Focal doesn't work for me either because it crashes a lot.
I'd like to add the original Samsung camera app, but after some research I found out, that it is not possible to add it without the TouchWiz framework.
I had a look in the ROM sections but couldn't find a ROM that has the TouchWIZ framwork combined with CM.
Maybe that isn't even possible? If so could someone point me to a fast and stable TouchWiz-based ROM as the camera is one of my main priorities on my phone.
Maybe without Touchwiz ( It's not my favorite one )
You can take : [ROM] JB 4.3 CyanogenMod 10.2 or ROM Custom JB 4.3.1 SlimRom - Galaxy'S Team
You have a galaxy i9300 or i9305 ?
My choice for i9305 a Rom SlimKat 4.4.2

Look at my signature and you will find a very good Stock 4.3 ROM ....
Also someone has ported Touchwiz camera for AOSP roms ... the video recording on that does not work but you can atleast use it for taking pictures ... and as far as the HDR goes ... well you will have to download and test it for yourself ...
