[Guide] How to root MSI Windpad Enjoy 71 and Primo 81 20-03-2014 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Update: I've reports that this method also works with the Primo 81, I'm not able to test it since I don't own one of thise devices but users have told in this thread they've had no problems whatsoever following the instructions here to root.
Hi guys, after doing some searching for how to root MSI Windpad 71 all I could find were msi 7 threads so I wanted to share with you what I ended up with. This method will work for both 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 Android systems.
First of all, you will need ADB drivers so your computer will recognize the tablet when connected in USB Debugging mode, you can find the Universal ADB drivers here (I took this link from Koushik Dutta's google+).
Secondly you will need Cydia Impactor, this is a tool that will allow you to root your device (This is the main site in case you want to check it).
Once you have both the ADB Drivers and Cydia Impactor we can begin rooting the device. I'll asume you sort of know what you are doing here if you are planning on rooting the tablet but if you have any question feel free to ask.
Install ADB Drivers (For the drives you need to have the tablet unplugged from the computer).
Cydia Impactor does not need to be installed, is only a package with a couple libraries and an executable file.
Turn on USB Debugging

Connect the device to the computer through usb cable.
Open Impactor and run the default command hitting Start. The window should look like this

All you have to do is click start.
That should be it, once you have done the steps you should install an app which requires root like Titanium Backup and testdrive your newly rooted Windpad 71.
That made the trick for me and it should be working for you, hope it helps.
Kibaruk
PS: I'm not taking credits for neither Koushik's drivers nor Cydia Impactor software, just tryint to make all the information available for easy access for new users that might find this helpful.

I've been told by another user that it also works with MSI Windpad Enjoy 71 running Android 4.1.1

Yes confirmed for 4.1.1

Hello
Yes can confirm that this would work on Enjoy 71 on Android 4.1.1.
Have now removed Asian system keyboards and some other bloat.
I guess no specific ROM's would be made for it, too few are sold outside Asia. But there might be ROM's out there that could be tweaked to work on the Enjoy 71.

Nandroid Backup
Well hope this helps anyone who tries rooting their Windpads 71.
I insist that if you have any question feel free to ask and I'll help you in any way I can.
Also, if someone knows how to get a nandroid backup for the Windpad 71, that would be awesome!

confirmed working for Enjoy 71 Android 4.1.1

How to root Samsung Music Duos GT-S 6012
Thanks kibaruk. By following your simple guide I could successfully root My Samsung Music duos GT-S6012 (4.1.2). The cyda Impactor is simply a great tool,so easy and powerful. It took only a few seconds to complete the job. Is it possible to unroot with the same tool?

Any news on a custom ROM? This little tablet is seriously awesome but a bit more configuration options wouldn't hurt.
Also, can you update from 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 using the tablet or do you need to download it somewhere?

You need to go to the Windpad 71 site and download the system image according to your serial number, then update reading the instructions on the same site it's really simple and if you don't like the upgrade you can always go back downloading the 4.0.4 system image.
I think you have an option to do the same via wifi but I havent tried it.
Also I havent seen any news on a custom ROM. Once you have it rooted you can add whatever system settings you like for example notification toggles, fullscreen to hide the standard navigation bar, so I'm not sure a new custom will add too much to the Windpad since the original one is light and fast.

Thank you for the quick answer!
I updated Android and used the root process described. Worked great! Thanks for all the help!
Yeah, maybe you are right. I am still new to tablets so I don't know much about the things I can do with this version. The learning begins now!
Anyway, If anything comes up ill be happy to be the guinea pig

Did you put your device in USB debug mode? If you are having problems with connectivity it's your driver, the other option is debug mode is not on.

Edit : I noticed in your old guide that you could remove the chinese superuser after installing english superuser and updating, I've done that
and the prompts now come up from the english superuser, but the chinese one has made itself a system app somehow and I can't delete it,
is there a solution for that or should I just disable it and ignore it.

It is actually quite simple to swap out the chinese superuser for the SuperSU or english Superuser if you know how. I posted how in my post about using Vroot.

Also - for most devices needing an ADB driver, just install snap pea from here: www.snappea.com It will install a generic ADB driver that will work just fine with any and every device I have used it on so far! You might also consider referencing or linking the developer of this tool since it is not of your own design. :good:

Hi, I just wanted to give you guys an update...
I just successfully updated and Rooted my Primo 81.
Android 4.4
Firmware v4.5rc5 (from Official MSI site)
Kernel 3.3.0
Build Number MSI N281 20140218
Rooted with Root_Onda_4.4.2_V4.4_LZ.zip found here. https://disk.yandex.ru/public/?hash=2TJM4pChF7cD2lxtvVuMnedXpWLoDssxCI622QeLXTw=
Instructions:
1.) Download Phoenix Suit from the support page.
2.) Run Phoenix Suit (and upgrade to the latest)
3.) Plug-in Device
4.) Upgrade to Android 4.4 Firmware v4.5rc5 (from Official MSI site).
5.) Put "Root_Onda_4.4.2_V4.4_LZ.zip" on ExtSD card
6.) move "Root_Onda_4.4.2_V4.4_LZ.zip" to the root of the IntSD card (with a File Explorer, I used "ES File Explorer").
7.) Open Setting, Backup & Restore, click on System Upgrade "Recovery Mode".
8.) Once device reboots; select "Apply updates from internal storage" (displayed on the device).
9.) use the "-"/"+" and power button to select Root_Onda_4.4.2_V4.4_LZ.zip.
10.) Once rebooted go to the Play Store and Install Super Su (just my preference), this will attempt to uninstall superuser, installed by Root_Onda_4.4.2_V4.4_LZ.zip. (It will Fail) but just reboot and SuperSU will prevail. :good:
11.) Open SuperSU and update Binaries.
12.) Go back to the Play Store and install Busybox Installer, Install Busybox v1.20.2-cm9.
13.) Optional, get Root Check from the Play Store to check Root Status...'
Congratulations! You Are ROOTED!!!
Here is a GoogleDrive link with Root Onda download and some Screenshots:

I need to give thanks to the users (HiroD51 and Zero411) over at the MSI Forums. I incorporated both of their posts.
upgrading the firmware
How did you upgrade the firmware to 4.4.2? The official firmware on the product support page only offers 4.4. Do you have a link you can share to download 4.4.2 or higher for the primo 81?
Thanks!
Sorry that was probably a typo, or my dam dyslexia. I get all these different devices and versions mixed up sometimes too. Anyway I check and it's 4.4 the one that is on the MSI Official site.
PS sorry for the late response. I was in the process of moving at the time. ?
OP updated and also took out those SS links. SS are available on my Gdrive link. ✌ ?

Only method known yet is to flash stock firmware from here.
And Xolo wont help if we have a software issue. Software is supplied by intel and xolo supplies it. Colo engineers also seem to be novice.
I luckily had an opportunity to meet their software manager. I asked him if he could provide a unlocked bootloader, he was unaware of what a bootloader is. They only distrubute OTA Updates.

Yeah, I had a similar experience about their engineers. They mentioned to me too, that the Bootloader is not in their hands.. Well, that's what happens when you try a budget company. All we can hope for is updates, now..

Hey, did you confirm that this technique works?
---------- Post added at 11:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:28 PM ----------
Guys! Now that we finally rooted the phone, let's try doing the one thing that can make our devices fulfill their worth.. That is finding a way to run windows 7 or Windows 8 on the phone. I'm not talking about wp7 or wp8 but the actual windows.. The phone has an x86 processot. So why can't this be done?! 2Ghz and 1GB ought to be enough for a smooth experience.. Guys, please try to work on this..
IT doesnt seem fake either

Well, I downloaded the ROM and all I found was an .nbo file.. I don't think it's a ROM (They're mostly zip files right?) Tell me if it's usable or not, when you're free of course..

Thats shocking!! Install this. What does it say?
Edit: Supersu doesnt work for many phones, dont rely on that! Use Super user. BusyBox works fine on mine. Just check if you haven't set Automatic response=Deny in Super user->settings->security.
Edit: Busybox screenshot.

Need the system Package Installer.

Hi,
I'm new to the forums so just go easy on me, well I live in Turkey, and in the schools here they provide the students with school tablets, I've managed to root their tablets using TWRP and a custom rom from one of a turkish android developer website, but now in the new tablets that the school provide, they somehow removed the stock system Package Installer, and now the only way you can install apk files is through Google Play, I want to root my friend's tablet but I can't seem to find a fix for this problem, I'm on android Kitkat 4.4.2 I'll provide detailed info about the tablet if needed, if someone can help me that'd be really appreciated, it's a General Mobile's Tablet, ETAB 5.
Thanks in advance,
Best Regards,
Shahbaz.
Try adb install cmd ????

I tried that but opening the adb for every app can be annoying, isn't their a way that I can get the Package installer in a zip file and then flash it using TWRP..?

Lollipop (& dsa ROM) for MTCB/C Xposed & 7Floor Sound Mod NOW WORKING !!

Myself and another user emailed Klyde a week ago about Android L, after having seen L running on an MTCB unit on youtube, but we ve not heard anything back yet, however, @kumarai just posted this link in the original thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67111483&postcount=21754
Its apparently L for 1024x600 RK3188 units, I ve not tested it, he hasnt said whether he has or not, just thought I d open a thread so as many people as possible could know.
If its real, all credit to @kumarai for telling us all
EDIT: @dsa8310 has also opened a thread here about his version :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...mtcc-units-t3495001/post69495591#post69495591
Very cool
Tested and it works 100% on Joying UQ124
1) Install the ROM via about machine or Recovery + Wipe data
2) wait 15-20 min for install
3) load recovery and clean cache and data 3 times and reboot
4) wait for good 5-10 min to load the first run.
Enjoy

I don't understand why it is not released and why they did not answer you when you emailed them?
and where did this head unit pop up from?

Klyde have been working on Android L for a while, as I said to you last week in the MTCD thread, I saw it on youtube so someone must be selling them already. I did read somewhere that its being released in June, so maybe the units with it are for sale already and in June (just a few days away) it ll be released for 4.4.4 units ?
Maybe ask @kumarai where he got the unit that he got it off from ?
Anyway, I ve tested it and it seems to be working, boot time is maybe a little bit slower than 4.4.4. but I cant get root, when I type in " *#hct#root# " it says "ADB root" as it did on 4.4.4 but no "superuser" entry appears in settings and Root explorer wont let me paste into system/priv-app. I havent tried anything else, including root checker as it was just a quick test for those of you who didnt trust @kumarai ..
This shot would seem to indicate that its possible to add a lock screen, but from my brief play I couldnt find a way to :
DONT FORGET TO THANK @kumarai HE GOT THE FLASH DUMP FOR L AND POSTED I IT ON XDA !!

very cool..
I will try it tonight and play around with it.
Fingers crossed! I've been trying to get volume control working with my USB DAC without success, and I believe 5.1.1 would fix that, right?

This is the same for the MTCD units apparently, so I guess it will be back to the old pre-rooted images or maybe we can try the method used for the MTCD units, there is root in the MTCD units isnt there @doctorman ?

Hmm, I just came across an old pm from @Marius B asking how to root an MTCD unit, he said he got the message "ADB root" but that he couldnt see a superuser menu, maybe simply installing a root app would sort it ?

@Malaysk I just tested the 5.1 ROM update provided here on Joying mtcB JY-UQ124 with 100% success
all seems to work
*#hct#root# sais ADB Root but SuperSU# does not get root access..
boot time seams a bit faster to me.
Easy connected app has a newer version but it asks for activation... is there a solution for the easy connected app activation? this is the first time I come across this but I know others had issue with other version of it..
tried older version of easy connected that I know was working and same problem, the easy connected app gets confused with android 5 and loses the certificate. it is a ROM issue. perhaps it will work in eventual Malaysk ROM
ROOT:
Factory settings> *#hct#root#
Install King Root latest version from their website
took few minutes after being stock on 90% and succeeded
Installed Kingo SuperUser

Do you happen to have a USB DAC or headset to try? I'm hoping it works"out of the box" since it's 5.1

no sorry
---------- Post added at 10:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:41 PM ----------
@typos1 the easy connecetd app needed a certificate in the ROM to work.. been googling and can not find the post that explained how to get arround the activation,
there was a certificate file that had to be copied to system root or something like that
perhaps @Malaysk knows it as he fixed it in his ROM
No improvement
I've this in two original HU's from Klyde and it's not an improvement from a functional
point of view. It resets itself randomly and is a lot slower than Malaysk's 4.4 on my other HU's.
Rooting like said above. Standard 4.4 + King root.
