Create an UPDATE.Zip - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys/gals. I have just rooted/unlocked my Atrix, and am flashing new ROMS. One thing I have run into though is the fact that these new ROMS don't come pre-installed with all of the apps that I want. So, I was thinking I could create an update package that will push all of "my" apps that I use on a regular to the ROM I just flashed instead of installing one by one via play store. I followed the advice posted by a Senior Member here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732957 but this isn't working for me. When I attempt to use CWM to install this update.zip file, all I get is updated failed. I do not see the reason for the failure, just that it failed. Can a more experienced user here, assist with what I am doing incorrectly please and thank you.

Check the recovery log. Every recovery has one.

When I run Show Log from CWM I don't see anything that is relevant to the reason it failed?

OK, I see your problem. You're using a way outdated procedure for creating flashable ZIPs. That is a procedure for creating Amend-based ZIPs which have long been abandoned, only Edify-based ZIPs are supported now. I think your best bed would be to get some ready-made flashable ZIP (of some ROM for example) and modify it according to your preferences.

What about using one of the app backup apps? like what i do is i started on gb, used go backup pro, backed up the apps and data for the apps. then i switched roms, reinstalled go backup pro, and restored the apps and data

I attempted this procedure with zip me, but when I went to actually install the zip created with this app, It said install failed. I know Titanium Backup Pro (paid edition) offers this solution, but I do not have a full paid version. I *thought* it would be simple enough to just create my own install script as I have the .apk files needed, just can't get the script set-up properly.

This app looks very comparable to Titanium Backup (and it's free which is great!). I am not seeing the setting though of how to choose which apps to make an installable zip from. Can you explain that piece to me please?

Upgrading to GB possible, but unlocking no. The fastboot oem unlock command wipes data.
titanium back up and my back up root are your friends.
If you are stock 100% and you will do an 100% stock update, I don't think you will loose any data.
But in that case, I don't know if you will be able later to unlock your bootloader if you want.
If you want to unlock your BP and install a custom rom, then read carefully all instructions. In that case you will loose your data. Use titanium backup, to backup, and then restore them back(except fingerprint data - uncheck it)!

Is pro really necessary? I really can't afford it at the moment.
And I have experience with custom roms on other devices. Tried out one of the p-roms a while ago and it was garbage. I'll be waiting for cm7 or MIUI.
I'm also not completely stock, I'm rooted.
Also, does the data wipe include everything but the sd-card?
Also, also, is there a stock gingerbread zip I can flash after the unlocking?

Pro is not necessary. You can use the free version. The Pro version let's you restore with one click whereas free version wants you to make more clicks. Also, do not backup and restore system data/settings, and only app/data.

Gotcha. The ROM I'm using allows users to customize many of the apps that are installed during flash... even allows us to install our own personal set of apps. This is done with a text doc on the SD card. I know you said you wanted to flash through recovery, but it's sorta the same idea.
Man why don't ya use the batch option in TB and by that option u can backup / restore all your apps in one click to use batch use menu button

I already using titanium back up pro..look optoion,,and make flashable zip..and when it finish the file name is update.zip.. now U just flash your own app+data

{For All Xperia} Online Nandroid Backup / Nandroid Backup without re-booting

Hey there guys I came across this useful tool today when I was poking around the ARC section it lets you make a nandroid without having to boot into recovery. This isnt my work Im simply passing it on so I hope he doesnt care too much about me posting this here.
***ALL crdeit goes to ameer1234567890***
Nandroid backups are usually performed in recovery mode. This means you would have to turn off your phone and reboot in recovery mode, which wastes a whole lot of time rebooting and a lot more time offline. For me, this has been a killer as I do regular nandroid backups. Having to reboot in recovery and finding missed calls, sms from my wife and friends is totally not accepatable for me. So, I set to develop an online nandroid backup tool which can do nandroid backups without switching off my phone.
Today, I am releasing it to public, as it may serve good for some others too. This tool is specifically for Xperia phones, but should work with any model of android phones.
This tool backups /system , /data , /cache & .android_secure partiotions to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup directory. The date format used for folder name is the same used by CWM itself and nandroid backups created with this tool can safely be restored using CWM. If you would want to have a custom name for backup folder, pass an argument with the name to the script and it will use the name.
Feedback (especially ideas to improve) are most welcome.
Requirements
1. Rooted android phone
2. A terminal emulator installed on phone
3. Busybox
4. A working CWM based recovery installed
5. Some patience
Installation
1. Download and copy zip file to SD card
2. Reboot into recovery
3. Choose install zip from SD card, select zip and flash .
4. Reboot!
Usage
1. Open terminal emulator
2. Type su to obtain root
3. Type onandroid
4. Wait and watch

When I tried to run this, it says "Checking for required tools" followed by "mkyaffs2image not found in path"

Any suggestion on how to fix this?

Isn't this inherently flawed since files on the rom are still being used and written while the backup is taking place? Neat idea though, don't get me wrong

I tried to do a restore from the online nandroid backup I made and even though it said "restore complete" my SD-ext(4) partition would not load its shortcuts and widgets. The funny part is link2sd didn't even detect any SD-ext as if it wasn't backed up. I thought it said that it backed up SD-ext during online backup, but not sure. I'm wondering if it might help to factory restore before restoring backup. I may try that to see and I'll report back if noone reports similar problem.
Edit**During backup I was not doing anything else with phone other then watching the amazing online backup screen. Also I tried to "re-create mount scripts" but never got option from link2sd even after reboot.

This tool (prior to v3) does not backup sd-ext partition. In the first post, you can see what the tool backups.
PS: If you can send me a previous backup of your sd-ext, I can work on adding sd-ext backup support to the script.

[Q] Batch install software

I was wondering if there is a way to point to a directory containing nothing but APK files and have each one installed on the device in question.
See I found myself needing to wipe my SGS3, I went ahead and backed up every USER installed app (from /data/app dir) and copied all the apks to my external SD card. After I install a fresh OS on the phone I would like to be able to have an app or some kind of batch file to point to where all the apks are and have them auto install.
EDIT: I just found THIS <APK batch installer>, would this work on our device?
I don't know about that but
I used titanium backup to backup my apps on My old phone and used it to batch restore

Titanium back up (for rooted phones) free version will restore all the apps, but you have to hit "install" on each one as they come up.
I believe the Pro version does it automatically.

Titanium Backup (Pro version) does what you want. Once you have the Pro version, click on the checkmark in the top right corner to see the batch operations.
And you do want the Pro because it works better than anything else I've tried. Go Backup and MyBackup have both failed for me before.
Titanium Backup Pro is what you want.
But if you're cheap, and you don't care about app data, you can batch adb install all your apps with a simple batch or shell script like:
Code:
$ for app in *.apk; do echo "Installing $app ..." ; adb install $app; done

[Q] Why can't I make an update.zip of my apps in Tibu?

I'm on CM10 alpha 2, and I want to upgrade to 2.99999999. Since you can't flash roms on our cm10, I need to make an update.zip, sbf, then flash 2.99999999. However, I can't make one. After I've selected the apps, and Tibu starts to make the update.zip, Tibu says it couldn't make it. After retrying, Tibu instantly said it couldn't make one.
Is there any way to fix this, or can I get to 2.99999999 and keep my data another way?
Stop what you are doing. lol.
Just SBF to 2.3.4, root, install the bootstrap and flash the latest CM10 and the Gapps in bootstrap recovery. I have never used an update.zip to update a ROM and dont believe thats the proper way to do it.
