[Q] Screen tearing in app-picker menu - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend has a weird problem on his SGS3 after I rooted it for him. I've tried installing AOKP and CarbonRom but the issue exists on both.
Whenever I open an app-picker list (ie when adding a widget or app to desktop) I get vertical screen tearing when scrolling. The tearing is pretty inconsistent because it doesn't happen all the time but in random intervals.
I've tried enabling and disabling vsync by editing build.prop but it didn't help. I've also enabled/disabled all the rendering related stuff in developer settings but nothing works.
There was no such issue in stock ROM. I've never had screen tearing problems even though I've rooted over ten different Android phones and tablets.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the issue?

Its a known issue in aosp and aokp ROMs. Install the latest temasek as it is patched to reduce the amount of tearing

Is the patch in the Temasek ROM or the kernel? I would like to keep the Linaro optimized CarbonRom and just flash the kernel if it works that way.

Holy crap... People are still worried about Linaro? You know its been proven to have no advantage over Google's tool chains. So don't worry about it.

Proven by who? Where? When? Interesting!
In Nexus 4 the difference between Linaro and Google toolchain is so obvious that Linaro dominates custom ROMs. I didn't see such a big difference in SGS3 so maybe I could go with Temasek. Tough the previous question is still unanswered: is the patch in the kernel or the ROM?

Well there are linaro tool chains for apps and kernels. Neither do much.

Freezing ISSUE SHOstock 1.3

I have been running SHOstock 1.3 for about a week now and I've been getting this persistent issue. My phone tends to freeze for a couple of seconds usually on the lock screen. And maybe at times when I'm texting. I have reflashed multiple times, full wipe, cache wipe, etc. I have also tried reflashing the kernel it self with the kernel cleaner zip. Still no luck I give up on looking around I never usually ask questions. I love the ROM its great to use very fluid and fast. I came from AOKP and I think I made a mistake in doing so. I just need the freezing part to stop. If not I am going back. Thanks if anyone has an answer.

I don't have this problem. But one of the first things I did was disable help on lock screen under lockscreen settings. Report back on if it did anything for you.
Second. As always I Always move all of my apps that are on SD card to phone memory. This keeps the phone in its smooth state. (This may be your solution)
I assume you're running SHOstock3 1.3? There have been some issues reported with the lockscreen widgets and/or wifi - read the SHOstock3 thread and search for these keywords. Not sure if there is a fix, but I don't have any major problems using the lockscreen widgets/shortcuts with wifi. Maybe once in a while, but not often.

It's a known bug. I think Sho mentions in the v1.4 changelog that he [possibly] found a fix.
Yes, it seems we'll have a fix soon:
(v1.4) UPCOMING Soon
-Added Flashlight Toggle
-Added Black and Red INK Lockscreen Effect
-Edited powerprofile.xml for sgs2 (Was set up for sgs3) Also Disabled a bool setting for a notification LED widget we don't have. (both seem to have fixed the lockscreen hang)
-Added JellyBean AOSP Lockscreen Toggle

It's a bug with xxlsj. Mentioned all over this and the i9100 section. Just searching my thread would have yielded you results of this. I may have found something since I don't get it anymore but others claim it's kernel related so we'll see. Remember this is a leak.

[Q] samsung stock camera on an aosp rom(root box)

Ho everyone, I've been having a great time with root box. I was a bit discouraged about using an aosp rom(because of all the extra features that Samsung roms have (ultima rom ) but the multitasking lag that I suffer from it was gone the moment i changed to an aosp rom. I miss some things about samsung roms, but otherwise I quite happy I did the change. But the only thing that I think is the best for me is the Samsung camera app. It has far superior quality and functions over the aosp one even though its faster in opening. But it lack the low light conditions that the Samsung one has(and don't tell that they has the same quality because it doesn't)
So to sum it up I wannna know if i can have the Samsung camera app over my rom( root box for the ones who skipped my intro) or something that I could do to use that camera. I know that there are some persons out there that could have the same question so i hope this can help them and that somebody gives any idea, thanks.

No matter what camera you install, all will act roughly the same. Completely the same regarding lowlight conditions.
If you need a better camera, go back to Crapwiz.

Well by seeing the suggestion you are giving i will try to do dual boot with siyah kernel with a tw rom. Any suggestions about a light one, just to use the camera.

Well you could compile the camera apk with all the dependencies built into it (harder than it sounds). We did it back in the S1 days.

Vanilla Rootbox V3.9.1 Camera Flash Bug

Hello XDA. This ROM (rootbox 3.9.1) is supposed to be stable, but when I turn on flash or automatic flash and I touch to focus then shoot, the camera app lags and force closes (and doesn't take the picture). This is annoying in so many ways, and makes it virtually impossible for me to take pictures in low light. Please help me address this issue for it is killing me and I don't feel like downloading a whole new ROM, flashing it and reorganizing all my settings all over again just to fix this issue. I also had this issue with CM10.1 (but that was normal, cause it is a nightly).
Anybody else have this issue? And possibly a fix?
Thanks in advance.
Also: inb4 "search the official root box thread". I did, and nobody seems to have this issue.

As far as I know this issue was fixed a couple of days ago in the CM Nightlies so maybe the Vanilla Rootbox base hasn't been updated yet or you aren't using their latest update.

Didn't work. what version of this aosp camera are you using? And with what ROM? I got the latest version. And it still crashes.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Actually I've found a way to bypass this problem. If I turn on the volume key to take pictures function, autofocus with flash on and take the picture with the volume key, it doesn't crash. I guess I'll just have to live with it like this for now, oh well.
OK now how do I close this thread? Or there's no such thing? Can any mod or janitor or whatever help me out here? I'm new here

Cm10.1 screen flicker

I'm running flyhalfs latest cm build and I'm getting screen flicker like crazy. I'm running crpalmers latest kernel and I have tried the stock kernel and it does the same thing. It won't do it for a few hours and then I'll turn my screen on and it will be flickering all around the edges . doesn't matter what brightness. Wondering of anyone has any ideas or if it's just a bug for now. Thanks.

Yea I found that and tried it out didn't seem to make a difference. It's so weird it sometimes it won't flicker at all and then I'll pull my phone out of my pocket and it will be flickering big time for a couple hours and then be gone again.

add script on your build.prop (need root access) ;
hwui.render_dirty_regions=false
if that appeared, then change to :
debug.hwui.render_dirty_regions=false
No need to do that. This thread is from June and crpalmer has worked out the screen a flickering bug about a month or two ago.
And, for the record, the fix is in the current CM 10.2 and 11.0 but not 10.1. If someone is on 10.1, please update!

Fix for 4.2.2 roms rebooting

I already posted this on the Rootbox rom thread, but I know not everyone reads the whole thread so it might save a bunch of people from asking the same question on different threads over and over again. I have tried out a few 4.2.2 roms and they would always reboot randomly, I used the 4Aces kernel and the Uber kernel and got the same results, constant random reboots. I fixed the problem by turning off CPU profiles. I use SETCPU to overclock, but I assume this is a kernel problem that would happen no matter which app you use to overclock. Hope this helps others!
Just to clarify, I'm still overclocking my device I've just turned off the CPU profiles.
Thanks a lot Porkenhimer, Will try this fix asap.

Soo, yeah, OP, what exactly are "CPU Profiles". Is this some app? Or is it the setting like in SetCPU that lets you change profiles around in sleep, wake etc?
I don't see it on SetCPU.. Under the Profiles tab, the "Enable Profiles" is not checked. Never has been . I still get the occasional reboot but its somewhat rare at this point. Nothing to concern myself with

Many things happen that cause reboots... Set cpu profiles may be a problem with certain rom and kernel combos but is not a problem for others...specify which rom and kernel combos your using

Did an experiment yesterday and today, I ran 5 random 4.2.2 ROMs each for two hours, 1 hour with no CPU profiles setup and 1 hour with CPU profiles setup and enabled. I used the 4Aces kernel for each test. I also used a different profile setup for each ROM. I did a full wipe before installing each ROM. The ROMs I used were PAC-Man, Alliance, Rootbox, ReVolt & Jellybeer. I did not install any apps except for SETCPU. I had a total of one reboot with CPU profiles turned off, which was with the PAC-Man rom, and the least amount of reboot I had was with Rootbox, which was 3 reboots in one hour with CPU profiles enabled. Its pretty clear to me that enabling CPU profiles at least with the 4Aces kernel, will cause reboots. I had used both both the 4Aces and Uber kernals before doing this test and got reboots on every 4.2.2 rom I tried so I'm guessing if I did the same exact test with the Uber kernel I would get the same results. I'm not saying that other things are not also causing reboots, but its clear to me that something bad is happening when CPU profiles are enabled.

Yes its the tab that says profiles in SETCPU.
Well you must have had a borinnnnng day haha. ... And your eyes must hurt for waiting on reboot.... I run 4/20 rootbox with profiles set for screen on 192/1242 WHEATLEY and screen off 192/972 powersave...4aces kernel. Only had one reboot and it was my daily driver for over a month. ...also the new base changes and merges may be messing with profiles set for set cpu in the newer 4.2.2 builds of roms and kernels. Cool to see someone giving that much time in a day to watch for reboots. Keep visine handy ...hope you figure out more

And actually run a logcat of it re booting with profiles and we will have some answers to what is causing the issue
