Xperia Z Ultra - Phone v Tablet UI - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Here are some comparison photos showing how the Xperia Z Ultra displays the same apps as the Xperia Z.
9 times out of 10, you get the tablet UI on the Z Ultra and you really do get more useful content due to the screen size.
Hope this helps. More pics on the way

more photos.

Quite a nice difference here on YouTube.

This is my go-to Android music app. Now Playing.
You can see here you get a lot more content on the Z Ultra. A much nicer experience overall.

Thanks! Now I know

I can't wait until I can get tablet UI fully on the Ultra. I am using PAC on my Z with 320 DPI phablet mode and 280 DPI tablet mode (apps) and I want the same on the Ultra even if I guess I will go to 240 DPI because of the bigger screen.
What I miss is the two column UI in settings etc, on such a huge screen as we have on the Ultra, it is the most efficient use of the screen estate. Fortunately, there are some apps that gives tablet UI even in phone mode. Aqua Mail is one of them.
Another thing that I want is to get proper tabs in the browsers and it is yet another concept that requires tablet UI. I don't like the tab management in phone mode.
Root can't come soon enough because that will enable Xposed Framework and App Settings, then time to get the tablet mode.

Could you try take a screenshot of flipboard please?

Here you go.
1 image is Flipboard open on my Xperia Z.
The other, is the same article open on the Z Ultra.
Huge difference. Everything is just so much more spacious and nicer on the Ultra

That's still running in phone mode. This is how Flipboard is in tablet mode (Nexus 7)

OK fair point.
However, it is still a large improvement over the normal phone mode. There is a lot of extra content and text.
Plus, I can install tablet apps from the play store. Can not do that on my Z. Some apps also default to tablet UI.

Yup, but i don't really care. I'll kick it into full tablet mode when it's rooted Are you planning on making new videos btw? I'm trying to come up with something that you can show us, but i'm shooting blanks here

Yeah I will absolutely be making more videos. I've just had a busy day today.
Hopefully tomorrow or the very latest Monday I will have more videos up.
In the meantime, start coming up with a few things you'd like to see

Playstore looks great on tablet UI too like on my note @218 dpi.

I use Play store in tablet mode on the Xperia Z with 280 DPI. Works great. I used tablet mode on the Note and Note II too.
My plan for the Ultra is to change to 240 DPI through build.prop and then take the per app route with Xposed Framework App Settings while waiting for the PAC ROM that will solve everything.

Is possible to have a "tapatalk 4" screenshot ? Is in tablet mode?
Thank you, Danilo

is it possible to get Tablet UI the same as the Tablet Z (navi button on bottom left and clock, status on the bottom right). That should save alot of space on this phone

Xperia Z Ultra - Default Mode is Tablet or Phone ?

Is there a way to force phone mode ?, currently I am using Talkatone and it defaults the interface to Tablet mode, and I would like to use Phone mode, Talkatone support told me the app with get the mode from Android, is there a way to change that behavior?, thanks
NOTE: What's the Android default mode with the Xperia Z Ultra, Tablet or Phone?
The default mode is Phone mode. Screen is easy with Tablet mode as well. But unfortunately Sony has not given any option to choose between Phone and Tablet modes.
But I am using an App called ROTATE available on Play Store, where I can force the mode to LANDSCAPE(tablet) OR VERTICAL(Phone). It is working perfectly for me as it seems Sony has worked hard on UI to provide compatability on all the Apps in both Modes.
NOTE:-
There are other apps as well on Play Store doing same job. Just search for Word: Screen Orientation.

Even though I am on PORTRAIT mode the app still thinks the device is a Tablet and show the Tablet layout
I think sometime its depend on apps.
Most apps has many layouts and they mostly depend on system dpi but there may be another factors too.
Portrait or Landscape have nothing to do with Phone or Tablet layout.
Edit: to answer your initial questions.
Z Ultra runs in Phone mode.
You can change system and/or apps layout by using custom rom such as Paranoid Android or PAC Rom or using Xposed app setting.
Hi,
it's phone mode but when rooted we will have the key to set it as tablet (default).

I really hope that will be the case..I'd load it with paranoid android straight away as I have an obsession with apps in the tablet mode. Do you guys think that progressively there might be a solution for having a custom ROM on Xperia Ultra and keeping the X-reality engine at the same time? Thanks!
On android, true tablet UI (no dock tab and menu icon on top right corner) or phone UI depend on the DPI of your device. You have ROM like paranoid that give you to some extend the possibility to emulate a tablet UI or phone UI, but never give you a true of each. So only 2 way are to change DPI. First of the whole system (can make apps compatibility troubleshoot and bad rendering) and second per app dpi. Both of those solution need root access and are not given to working at 100% as for some apps keep the UI look they set for your device and can't be change without modifying the apk itself.

Sure thing, this actually removing X-reality engine only on stock ROMs as for punish people who root the device. We can get JB on devices that don't have it in stock, we can get beats audio on devices that don't have it on stock, we can get bravia engine and even get playstation market access on other devices than sony. Things are that this phone only got released in some Asian country, need to wait international release and a couple of weeks or months then we'll be able to enjoy this device at the fullest. Patience.

Welcome to XDA...
For future reference there is a Question and Answer section... but everyone make that mistake when they first come..
What do you mean by appropriate fit launcher? here are a few launchers you may want to try:
Apex - simple, light
Nova - simple, light
Shell 3D - Fancy, 3D (expensive: $20)
Next - New, 3D. loads of add ons.
Action Launcher - similar to next
Go Launcher - heaps of add ons... perhaps too many!?!
fit to screen
Sony Xperia Z ultra is a bigger size phone. Actually I tried Go Launcher first as like on my old samsung galaxy note 2 but that does'nt fit with this new handset...so, I just want to know if there is any launcher which fits the huge screen of Xperia Z ultra

try apex. you can make it have 7 icons on the dock. change the amount of space (collums and rows) on the screen and cram icons in.. same with the app draw.
My favourite Launcher, in the order of preference is:
#1 Next Launcher 3D with Meego or Ubunty themes and use Circuitry Live wallpaper in the background.
#2 ADW Launcher EX
#4 SPB Shell 3D or free version Yandex Shell
#3 Go Launcher EX/Prime
-----Every other launcher is more or less same as they all try to represent stock Android JB/ICS/KitKat so if thats what you are after then get Nova, Apex etc... or get yourself a Nexus 4/5 or Google editions of Galaxy S4/HTC One.

In what exact way does the GO Launcher "not fit" with the XZU?
GO is extremely configurable - including the size of the icon grid and the size of the icons themselves. I've also come from a Note 2 to the XZU and I'm using GO with no problems - and I have 7 screens of icons and widgets on my phone.
Try buzz launcher... They have their own store for themes and some of them are amazing to say the least!

I like the Action Launcher. It does not offer endless options but it has the most unique features...
Thanks Everyone, now comfortably switched over to NOVA LAUNCHER...feeling much better:angel:

Just run 7 rows and 7 columns on the homescreen and it will look perfect.
I also use "Tap home button" again to show text messages.
and
Swipe finger up on homescreen to open phone app

iPhone 6 Plus like software enhancements

So I'm back to considering the Z Ultra. My question to you all is does the Z Ultra have "big phone" software enhancements like 2 pane e-mail, or a special calendar landscape view etc? Can anyone provide or direct me to screen shots of those apps?

Nope. Depending on the version you get, you might get the small apps from the Xperia line up. If you get the gpe version, it is stock gpe software, much like it is on any other gpe device (basically aosp with google stuff all over it). There are apps you could install and there are Roms like omni that have multi window support, but that is about it.
There are two rules in life for being successful:
1. Never reveal everything you know;
2.

Home screen & menu icons and widgets disappear and reappear when quitting an app, esp

Hi I have had this problem on day one and it seems the lollipop update has made it even worse, i.e. longer loading time of the icons . Do you guys experience this too?

I see it happening sometimes, also see the icons shoot around the screen to arrange themselves in alphabetical order when opening appdrawer.
This is called a redraw and is due to device running out of free RAM so it is killing the launcher and when it is opened again it has to load all icons. It is more common in Lollipop than KitKat because of some memory leaks in 5.0.2, fixed in 5.1 onwards. We must have to wait for Sony to update the firmware, use custom roms or live with redraws.

Hopefully we will get 5.1. This device maybe on the EOL list now. Also I had the random reboot again

I think that some time we would get it because Xperia Z is way older than ZU and it has got the 5.0.2 update.

UI size changes automatically

I have a problem .. some times when i switch on the screen everything changes to very small even the navigation bar icons .. its like the resolution changes and everything will be small .. ill.post a screenshot when it happens again .. a workaround i go to screen resolution and change from hd to fhd then back to hd and the wallpaper , icons, settings and text comes back to normal size.
Help is appreciated

Write to the app developers to optimize it for Huawei's EMUI.

I was afraid I'm the only one. ?
We have to wait for the update ?
Maybe you turned smart resolution ON?
Turn smart resolution off. It will be OK.
think you have one-hand-mode active

Well quite opposite in here.I used to have the resolution on HD+ for the power saving reason and the problem occurred once a day.
So i have turned that smart resolution ON and from that moment all is ok.
Thanks for your advice even it works the other way around.
Go to Settings -> Smart assistance -> One-hand UI
Now, here you will see two options, Mini screen view and Shifting keyboard.
Tap on Mini screen view and turn on the slider
