Hello fellow transformer prime users,
I have been looking over many threads on how to update to JellyBean and have not come to the decision of whether I should update at the current moment or wait. The reason I feel uncomfortable with updating is that I soft bricked my prime when I did the .21 to .28 update, all due to my human error of not triple checking over myself. Thankfully I have superior knowledge of the android system because I have been using Android since the G1 days (yup I am not a noob, but neither am I an expert in these things, you can say that I am an intermediate power user). Fortunately I was able to unbrick using multiple methods and abd tricks that I found on these threads, and I truly thank everyone of the big guys out there for helping out though my difficult time. Although I had alot of fun in that ordeal, I surely DO NOT WANT TO GO OVER THAT HARDSHIP AGAIN (sorry but I have been emotionally scared for life).
Although it may seem that this post is question oriented I would like to note that it is mostly a plead for an update method suited for my particular setup.
On to the details:
At the current moment my prime is being used as a daily driver. It is my college life all bundled in to one awesome device.
Android version 4.0.3 ICS
It is rooted
it has IML74. US_epad-9.4.2.28.2-20120529 build
stock to the root <----get it.... its a joke
It has latest superuser
it has been backed up
Voodoo OTA root keeper shows 100%
The device is NOT UNLOCKED, it does not say that it is unlocked on start-up, ITS LOCKED
It has CWM 5.5.0.4
My first method of rooting was done though vipermods exploits
Last time I updated I just flashed the proper/suitable stock .28 build that I have now through CWM
At the current moment everything works wonderfully and I love this device.BUT I am afraid of bricking it...I have had bad dreams....BAD BAD NIGHTMARES....
So the question is...I mean comment...(sorry if this does not belong on here)...
What would be a best update method for my current setup

More info....
Before my .28 update with sparky's rom i had the .21 vipermod exploit....i had flashed cwm and updated my rom from the previous .18, and even before that i had root through vipermods initial root method.
I know my bootloader is locked, but how than is it posible for me to flash roms for unlocked bootloaders. The sparky rom that i flashed is supposedly for unlocked bootloaders.
I am sooooo confused....i dont want to brick my prime again.

HOW I BRICKED IT BEFORE:
so i was on .21 and wanted to update to latest .28 build
I manually downloaded the stock.28 rom from asus website
I updated through icon on bottom right hand area...you know
All was going well then boooooom i got soft bricked with a bootloop
Did the popular unbrick method through abd then i found sparkys rom.
Flashed sparkys rom through cwm (i uploaded the rom through this abd command file mover thing i found on another xda forum whiles in cwm)
Flashed and installed perfectly
Ok now what should i do....unlock my device and twrp recovery it or whatever its called and then go from there?
Or just wait....i dont know where to start...and frankly i am very displeased with the amount of clarity out of the top guides out there....and all i see is a plethora of bricked devices...sad face...

Weired issue...i heard about perfectly unlocked primes, about primes with locked bootloader "forever" (like my device), but never heard anything about an invisible unlock after softbrick...
Maybe somebody can figure out where "the magic" happened...

ok simple answer: I unlocked device...I think through a vipermod primetime release that had it...i think v4 unlock tool don't remember
was on .11 then on .18 then to .21 now on .28
did root with vipermod, and installed cwm in .18 or .21 dont remember
got bricked when i manually updated to .28 from download from asus site
think that there is a method of binging back primes that are bricked
using quick abd pusher...thats what i used in cwm to get sparky's rom on prime and flashed
now working

Hey all, i'm currently on Hairybean 4.2 but need to downgrade since I'm selling my Prime.
I'm hoping to avoid a brick with this question.
Ok, so to revert, all I have to do is downgrade the bootloader and recovery found on the Hairybean site. From there, I found the latest OS update on Asus' website. Can I just flash their file through recovery or do I need to use say, a stock rom I found on xda? (although a slightly older version, which I think still has wifi problems).
Has anyone done this?

I lucked out and had a nandroid copy on my computer of stock. So I downgraded my bootloader etc. with hairybean (thanks for posting that) and then nandroided.
From there I factory resetted and all is well for the sale of the tablet.
I loved you tf-201, but you never worked like I hoped. I'm hoping my nexus 7 will be my best friend in school.
I need some help.... I just got a tf201 and it came with 4.0.3 with the . 28 so I thought it would be time to install a custom rom. So I read that nvflash was the thing to install and use but every page with instructions leads me to another page to download but the files are no longer on there...I have rooted and installed a couple different roms on my Kindle and Android phone so I know just enough to get myself into trouble and want to protect myself..... I have to do some searching on fastest also, I used it on my Kindle but that was over a year ago so I have to remember how to get into fastboot.....
OK I think I figure it out because of reading all the other post....It looks like the files were removed when they came out with the JB guide of doing it....So my question is then I should update to the 4.1 update then follow the guide over on mobi for the JB correct? I would really like someone to offer some suggestions before I go ahead and update and screw myself.....

Yes, you would be best off updating to the latest official 4.1.1 version (10.4.2.18) and using the guides and files designed for JB to make your NVFlash backups :good:.
Do read the official guide but there is also a clearer and more detailed guide to NVFlash for JellyBean HERE.
Note: it does say you need the 10.4.2.15 bootloader but the method and files work fine on the 10.4.2.18 also.
Do read the instructions carefully as the prime is a lot easier to brick than the other devices you have experience on.
Ok need some more help..... I found out my prime had twrp already installed.. So can I install nvflash after twrp has already y been installed?.. .. I have Ics on it and seems everything today is for jb......How or where can I find how to update my prime to jb since it has already been rooted and unload ked bootloader...... I don't want to brick it but want to get it updated to the point where these guides I can read and follow?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge. I would like to know if I can up grade my 10.1 tab GT-7510 running 4.04 to a higher Androind operating system.

Sure you can! ☺
You can run almost any version you want. I'm running kitkat 4.4.4 (the very latest version) on it now.
But you'll have to root it first and perhaps change the bootloader (I did) and install a custom recovery. After all this you can flash almost any ROM you want.
Have fun and Always make a backup!

It is ever so simple to upgrade your tablet to CM10.1, look at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_p4wifi (I assume it is a P7510 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi version) to get the quick and easy method of getting Android 4.2.2 on your tablet from a very stable and reliable Custom ROM, superuser and more built-in by default. If ever it does not work for you, then you can always revert to Stock 4.0.4 from Samsung (see sammobile.com for downloads of stock recovery images. You will need to register for free to be able to download).
Hope this is the quick and easy way for you. If you want to go to KitKat 4.4.4, then the nameless (official nightly build) ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716016 is where you want to start out. Please keep in mind that this release may still have some issues for the Tab, as it still is under development.
Your choice. But no need to root beforehand if you want to load a custom ROM, you only need a recovery manager (either CWM or TWRP, all to personal taste) loaded to continue. Mostly, just to make sure, do the bootloader-thing beforehand as the default Samsung bootloader hates both CMW and TWRP recovery mode, and you could end up with the infamous rolling screen problem.
My suggestion is to start with CM10.1 as that is almost a walk in the park, and the steps are both easy to follow and [almost] never fail.
Hope this makes it a bit clearer. Best of luck in your endeavours to get the stock bloatware off your tablet...

3: I perform the next step: "Installing CyanogenMod from recovery"
4: where do I find the "required Google Apps" as noted in the above "step three".
5: HOW to find and install 4.2.2, or what ever is the most stable OS for this Tab.
Is this process correct? If no please clarify

The process is defined for the p4wifi (i.e. P7510 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the original Samsung WiFi only, not 3G).
If you have a tab2/tab3/note etc, then you need to navigate a bit there to find your machine. But most of the process is the same, just other binaries/ROM.
The bootloader download is mentioned in the Odin3 method (windows only) of this documentation, within step 1: download pershoots recovery package. Steps 2 to 8 there explain exactly how to start up odin, get your tablet into download mode and transfer the bootloader. Step 10 explains that your have to follow the same steps 2 to 8 to get the recovery tool installed on your tablet.
For the p4wifi the CM10.1 stable roms can be found at: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=p4wifi
The applicable google apps can be downloaded from http://goo.im/gapps , where you have to load the one, related to the flavour. In your case the CM10.1, one (3rd line at this moment) of 20130812.
PLEASE NOTE: If your tablet is not the P7510 (Wifi), but, for example the P7500 (3G), then you might need a different bootloader, recovery mod and CM10.1
CM10.1 is 4.2.2, and has root built-in by default. This 4.2.2 also allows you to create more 'users' on the tablet, do all kinds of nice things, and can be finetuned to improve performance (like overclocking). All built-in by default.

Hey, and don't apologise for asking dumb questions, we all started out asking questions, and this forum is really there to get people started on the path of getting the most out of their tablets. Keep on asking, and there is always somebody out there to help you out if you get stuck.
One advise: get the exact model-number of your tablet (build) and register at sammobile to get a plain stock recovery image, so you can always get back to the default setup, and not lose hope when your tablet gets 'bricked'. We have more than enough expensive doorstoppers in the world to need to add one more. Sammobile gives you the recovery image, base on model and country. These stock recovery images are about 450 MB, and can be restored easily with your big friend Odin (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2142268).

I also see now some of the challenges the web and forums like this one present, because links go dead, and new process and data are constantly being created. Thus the "process" is always in flux.

You are welcome. I myself have been a Software Engineer since the early seventies of the 20th century (40+ years of IT), and started out as Computer Operator loading punchcards and papertape into old IBM and UNIVAC computers. The world has changed dramatically since then. Not all good though...

I really need to get lollipop on my Transformer Prime I know my way around the tablet pretty well but am new to ROMs and rooting. I've done some very basic stuff by following youtube videos but cannot figure out how to update it to lollipop. Everytime I read instructions on the forums I get completely lost. I am a pilot and have been using my TF201 for 4 years now for flying. The app I use isn't compatible with my old firmware anymore. I would really appreciate if someone would be kind enough give me some very dumbed down instructions on how to update my device's firmware. It's either I figure out how to do this, or go broke on a new tablet. Your guy's help would do me a huge solid. For the purposes of this I already factory reset my tablet to undo my current rooting mess and updated it back to version stock 4.1.1

When it comes to ROMs there are a few things I always do, first make a backup of any files you might need should you manage to brick your tablet (search the forums, theres plenty of info on how to do it) then have a full nandroid backup of your current working setup to revert to should a brick happen (this can be done through your Recovery Program {TWRP,CWM} and I do it twice for good measure) then update any software you might need to in order to install the ROM of your choice then follow the install instructions for the ROM you want to install. I think for Lollipop KatKiss is probably one of the best if not the best Lollipop ROM, I have used it for a couple weeks and had no issues. I am currently running a BETA of marshmallow which has some weird issues on my Prime, so I would say Marshmallow is not yet there in terms of stable everyday use, but in due time it will be. Hope it helps, feel free to ask me any questions you might have.

Chards, I'm a pilot too! Good luck with the root. In a nutshell, you need to do the "Flatline" method to get nvflash enabled. Follow their tutorial and make all the backup files... really. After that you're bullet proof. From there use the nvflash guide to upgrade the bootloader to Hairy bean. No you can't just flash it. You can't downgrade it... nothing. The only way to get the hairybean bootloader is to "unblob" it and flash it directly with nvflash. After that, follow the instructions over at taconikki's threads. Pick 5.0 or his new 6.0. Just follow their directions and you'll be all set. Best of luck!
