Anyone use Dolphin browser? How much ram does it take up? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my device it starts out taking up about 70mb of ram but continually grows.
To check, go to settings->apps->running->show cached process.
Please help me here, I dont know if this is normal or not. It goes from 70 to 300mb of cached ram usage in a matter of hours.

IIRC, cached process is for background apps that are still in memory simply because there is enough memory to do so. If the device is short of memory, these cached processes will be cleared.
Does the memory issue cause you actual problems?

Dolphin actually works for you? Well I'll be damned. Are you rooted or just straight stock?
The poster above is correct in what he said, the only time to worry about it is if it causes a device slowdown. If you're worried about it you can always go to the recent page and clear it out.

Thx for the help . I'm rooted. No, the browser does eventually get laggy when the cache size gets really high. I've set Tasker to kill dolphin when the screen goes off to reset the cache, which seems to work.

Using dolphin on my rooted Team Baked tab and have zero issues. Infact, hasnt been rebooted in a few weeks, and dolphins never been closed. Same 9 open tabs and smooth as butter.

Best browser ever. Why should I care about memory 2GB is a lot

Same problem on all browses on many devices at the moment for many people. It comes from a problem in android latest releases which is hopefully going to be addressed. Nice to be able to say that this device is not affected because saved by relatively large ram but others not so lucky with apps slowing down and freezing, one guy on another forum. has said chrome reached the heady heights of 400MB :-o

I am using Dolphin on my XTZ (non-rooted 4.1.2 stock). After a few hours of browsing the used RAM goes to 400-500 Mb.. And Dolphin actually slows down and sometimes freezes for seconds, so I have to restart it.
Lately I started using Chrome.. seems to handle better browsing for hours.

I love you. You have convinced me this issue is not a hardware defect or something (I dont know how rogue memory leaks would be a hardware defect but w/e). You also saved me from additional anger by factory resetting my tablet only to find the issue still persisting.
Gosh, I love this tablet so much despite its flaws, I really want to keep it. My last (5) nexus 10s would randomly reboot multiple times a day from the freaking system ui having a memory leak, and it took a year for Google to fix it with 4.3.
Anyway, turning off Javascript helps immensely. Still, after a few days, the browser is taking up over 200mb of ram, but it is a far cry from the 400mb in 2 hours that usually happens.
Anyone have any idea?

Stinky

As far as I've read on other forums here and other sites..... No! Latest upgrade to 4.3 on galaxy nexus has, if anything, made it worse...I tried it on a Gnex and can confirm that to be the case

Well that's just dandy. Honestly thinking about getting an ipad right now . Sure, ios is a bit more boring, but it at least works. Nexus 10 was plagued by a memory leak, and it was 8 months before Google for anything. Now I can't properly browse or use bluetooth, as that affects Internet.

[Q] Galaxy note performance

I dont know if its me but, my Galaxy note i717 tends to lag a lot, i read up online and figured out its due to the Snapdragon S3 processor, which tends to lag a lot. Does anyone else have this issue... what do u do about it...? im thinking about returning it and getting the Galaxy S3. I installed CM9, team perfection rom, and Hybrid and it still lags...
I love the size of the note, and the S-Pen but I really cant have my phone Lagging, it ruins the user experience...
I came from the iphone 4 which was pretty smooth.. it isn't to fast but it didn't lag at all, other than that i think android is a lot better....
Mine is lag free. I'm running Juggernaut AOKP currently, but I rarely saw lag on GB, and never on ICS. Some notes just seem to be more laggy than others. If you're within 30 days, go exchange it for another one, see if its any better. If not, it may be an rogue app, widget, or launcher that is causing it.

you mean caches?
that just frees memory right? how does that actually speed the phone up though? because android automatically closes program and frees memory already doesnt it?
I'm running OnlyOne ICS ROM and have zero lag. Give this ROM a try. It is the smoothest ICS ROM I have flashed thus far.
Im running with Team Perfections objection. Zero lag.
It is my understanding that the caches aren't memory, but temporary files for applications that can cause problems. Wipe 'em first, Dalvik cache too.
Try v6 supercharger to null the lag. Rememberber in ics there is no custom kernel yet...

I am running the Hybrid or Flap's base roms depending on the day of the week it seems...zero lag.
I returned my first Note due to the backlight bleed on the buttons (white version) and was shocked at how much better the second Note was. Originally I thought I had made a mistake in purchasing it. The phone was slowish and the SPen sucked. It would hesitate at everything that it did. I even did a wipe on it to no avail. The second phone brought a smile to my face. Still does!
The S3 is a nice phone and you wouldn't lose either way.

The phone isn't the issue...it's the software.
Just look at the size of the latest ICS leak. 1.1* gigs.
Then look at CM9-- 150 megabytes.
There you have it...950 megabytes of crap. Just a few crappy lines of code can bring a phone down to it's knees.
Not to mention, i've seen the fastest phones available brought down to their knees. If you have 9 pages of widgets, don't expect your phone to be blazing. It takes a lot more to run a widget than it does a 4x5 row of static icons. That's sooooo 1995.
stock GB rom, no lag
this phone runs AMAZING with ICS, really.. better than my friends HTC one X Tegra 3 CPU. Wait until samsung drops the official ICS update. The only one ROM was AMAZING, however I got a lot of bugs that I could not live with.

Samsung Galaxy S3 - High RAM Usage?

How much of your RAM is consumed ?
Mine is always over 600 out of the 780mb. Even after a ram clear ?
Is this normal ?
Where exactly do you see the ram?
Does it bother you ? mine is smooth as butter, stock everything
Unused ram is just going to waste.

Loading and unloading apps all the time needs a lot more battery that keeping the RAM filled up. Both performance and battery life would suffer if the RAM would be kept empty.

i have this problem as well.. and when too much ram is consumed around 650mb on average for me.. my s3 will starts to lag sometimes when exiting from an app to the home screen. anyone has solution to this ? clearing the memory dosen't help much. memory still fluctuates around 600+ mb
Install a task manager with listing capability, e.g. Houmiak Taskmanager and check which process(es) cause the high usage.
It should not lag, usually that's caused by app service processes not terminating correctly when exiting/closing the app and filling up memory to the brink.
If you got such apps you might want to try 'Fast Reboot' which usually gets rid of them very fast with (imho) less performance impact than most other 'memory cleaners'
thanks.. i have thus far downloaded ram booster.. works great for me .. free up lotsa memory and now it fluatueting around 400 :good: now my s3 is running at the speed it should be
Im at 600/780Mb.
No apps running under active apps.
Yet if i hit clear memory, it says 21 apps closed and drops down to 530
I get high RAM usage too , sometimes can reach up to 680 but the odd thing is that I don't see any difference in terms of performance. It is still fast as ever.

Solution?
First off these forums are here for people to ask for help. Old threads have no new interest.
I stumbled across this in hope of a permeant fix as mine too is around 650mb and phone starts to lag. Only quick solution I have is to go into developer options and click background processes and limit the amount that can occur. I turned mine to 0. Don't know the effect on battery yet but its around 500mb now and the phone is now back to its smooth self.
Wont that stop software such as weather to update in the background?

Best way to preserve ram is to switch off your phone..that way it will have 1 gb ram..
[Off topic] killing background processes will make your phone like my Nokia 1100..with no multitasking..all the apps will close once you exit..and all the data will be loaded up when you restart again..taking up more cpu time and battery..

No multitasking = slower phone, worse battery.

I was having the same problem with my S3 the first week I bought it. I switched it off and on again and it was back to normal
Just my point of view using a comparison :
On the computer when I installed more RAM it's to have more apps load in it instead of waiting for them to be loaded... Not just to have more RAM unused...
On the phone it's the same.
Android seems to handle ram usage very well, killing apps on it self when ram is required...
Reason I did it was when my ram was going above 600mb upon exiting apps my home screen would hang with no icons for a few seconds. Task manager, clear process and it return to normal. Limiting the process somehow worked. It's not logical but these are phones not computers.
There's no software trick on my mac that can increase ram like jelly beans has done so who knows.
Plus most apps apart from weather etc store their last state and resume where you left off so doing what I says does not affect me.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
I too have this ram problem. I like that the phone is doing its best to keep the ram full for multitasking purposes but i hate when it lags when i go back to the home screen. Also sometimes i close an app to do something else, say texting, then go back and it has to re-open the app because android killed it to free up space. Couldnt it just cache it if it needs space instead of fully closing it?
I heard there was an update that fixed this ram issue but its not showing up for my phone.
In some ways i miss my galaxy s2 :/

Falling under 150mb free RAM causes Sense to reload every time

So, I noticed a bit of odd behavior and wanted to double check with you all.
I had enough background processes running that ended up leaving less than 150mb of free RAM. Every time I hit the home button, Sense 4 would reload. I figured I would uninstall any programs (in this case Open Signal and switched from swype to the HTC keyboard) so that the phone would have more than 150mb RAM and voila, no more reloads.
Has anyone experienced this behavior under similar conditions?

I'm beginning to think Sense may be a resource hog. I was quite sure phones didn't need more than 1GB of RAM yet, but Sense is proving me wrong. When MikLatTE comes out, perhaps I'll root and unlock my phone. I know Mik's ROMs are always optimized while providing an enhanced stock experience.

I don't know if I understood any of that....
Back when LauncherPro was the best launcher available, I used it. It eventually because too bloated and ran slowly on my 4G, but I still loved it for the scrolling dock and customizable home screens. The developer eventually decided to do a complete re-write, but never delivered. Rumors are he is still working on it, but I gave up hope about a year ago when he was about eight months in and didn't offer any updates.
I honestly don't have a problem with Sense. I wish the dock could scroll to give us more access to apps along the bottom of the screen, but I don't seem to run very many apps on my phone anyway.
I have 120mb free according to my task manager and get no reloads at all. I am running the stock with goodies rom.
And isn't unused ram wasted ram? I'd rather the phone use all it can even if it doesn't need it. It is unfortunate the processes the phone chooses to close when it does need more ram are not the best choices at times though, like the launcher.
I'm not even able to get under 150 mb lol. I'm trying. I'm playing music, have 2 browser windows, on the XDA app, checked Facebook and then checked twitter. I assume the phone is aggressively closing apps behind me? I have it set to only all 4 processes. Maybe that's it?

Anyone downgrading back to GB?

I am. And here's why:
1. Consistently LOW RAM in ICS, which leads to issues with apps being very sluggish, or sometimes custom wallpapers in Whatsapp/ChompSMS/GoSMS not loading. No such issue in GB. SIM Toolkit takes up 35MB, HDMI takes 50+ MB, etc etc. I usually only have 80-120MB free for apps. A far cry from the 200+ in GB.
2. Low WiFi signal - No such issue in GB.
3. Occasional freeze. No such issue in GB.
I have:
- Done a reset and installed everything from scratch (no improvement)
- Done a clean flash and re-installed everything from scratch (no improvement).
So, back to .75 GB for me.
Try another firmware.
Repair with pcc or sus.

You're, again, one of the many who is complaining about ICS...
Well if you want to downgrade, that's something you should do. I have to say my experience is just fine. As seen in the screenshot, memory is just fine. SwiftKey is consuming about 60MB of RAM, but besides that there's nothing troubling.
Battery is fine as well. Heavy usage gives me about 17 hours (WhatsApp, GTalk, Browser, Walkman, Google Reader, Facebook, WordFeud).
Also WiFi.. I guess you might be right with that. But I can't say it with certainty, as my WiFi signal has always been low...
I did have to do a complete wipe and remove Google's Backup of my data to make everything work fine.
And here is mine not rooted.
Sent from my LT26i using Tapatalk 2
I was also thinking of downgrading and actually I did and used for couple of days before I decided to try again, which is a great thing I did.
Mine is smooth (well, almost there) besides the Facebook application itself and shuttering music when played through the Bluetooth. Given the fact that this is the first ICS firmware, I'm sure that there will be bug fix soon, but there isn't anything which you can't handle.
I've no launcher re-draws so far, no lags (besides occasional ones in the launcher) and I've more than 70 applications installed and more than two dozen running in the back ground.
If you want to go back, well it's your phone and your choice and no one is stopping you!
ICS had been a great experience for me, much smoother over all, issues with GB have been fixed, stock browser is excellent, speaker during call is loud, much better bluetooth, ICS animations, far better keyboard, contact groups, higher bitrate camera and list goes on.
Issues with memory are redundant, wifi signal might appear lower but I've never had drops and I use hotspot for vpn to work on trips.
Battery life is the same for me 1.5 days with medium use.
Sent from my LT26i using xda premium
I already downgraded.
I might upgrade again on the weekend with the rooting guide.
The main problem I had with ics is unacceptable battery drain in standby, with root hopefullyi might be able to pin point the cause and fix the issue.
I do hope Sony are aware of the problems and patch them soon, because ics on the xs is pretty damn good and I miss not having it.
upgraded again. Stock ICS Au Generic via PCC.
I now understand why reviews of this phone weren't so great with it running GB. :cyclops:
The battery life on ICS improved a lot after rooting & uninstalling some preinstalled apps. I noticed significant improvement in standby time after uninstalling ANT radio (related services), Update service etc. and many other useless (for me) apps/services which were draining a lot of battery (esp. on standby)! And it also gives a lot of free ram (about 250-350 mb).
ICS has been faster, smoother, better looking (esp small font) without any lags/redraws for me. There are many improved apps and all but also are a few glitches/minor bugs on this ICS build by sony which hopefully shall be fixed soon!
Overall, I would say that ICS is Faster and Cooler than GB, but GB surely is much stable/Reliable wrt current ICS build. I am on CE ICS rom.
Well if you don't mind trying development stuff, there is this custom ROM already out there which has some tweaks and lots of things removed which makes battery life better by removing programs that would otherwise be running in the background and it will also help speed a little.
Even though, it is a custom ROM. But talking about vanilla ICS i think its just as good as GB. Its common for it to use more RAM as most of newer programs do (Like Windows 7 vs Windows XP) or so, but thats just using the resources we got.

Yes, as you have repeatedly said in multiple threads. However, free RAM on the xps is not wasted, it actually provides a smoother experience and allows Apps to load properly without constant redrawing and cache swapping. It's also not ending tasks for new ones to start as all the system apps which cannot be killed are clogging the ram.

I also rolled back to GB. For me ICS is just a hair smoother, but ICS on Galaxy neuxs is way smoother, so i'm not impressed.
LED notification is not working.
So other than that, the whole experience is just very similar to GB if not the same. after rolled back to GB, i don't miss ICS a bit, lol.
for the Free RAM is waste RAM stuff, i don't offense it because it is Linux, but on my ipad3, still 1GB ram, after boot up, it showed 803MB free, and it just works (fast and smooth inside out), but again they are completely different system, can't say which is better, don't comment on multitasking since they both just work.
BUT hey, Xperia launcher used excessive amount of ram but still not smooth in ICS and GB, what are you caching, app performance in GB is just as good as in ICS, everything is fast but not smooth (compare to my gf's lower spec Galaxy nexus). She asked why and insisted i should pick galaxy nexus, i can't say a word, lol. (but i love XS design and HDMI output)
So, if you don't mind GB is older and encounter many problems in ICS, roll back wouldn't hurt you a bit.
Do you think there will be any ICS fix from Sony? Becasue toomorrow i am going to buy XS, and i am deciding whether to stay on GB or upgrade to ISC.
Nothing else i care but, wifi signal and camera. I use wifi mostly when i am on my bed, and until now I had always 1/3 signal (HTC Desire S, Xperia U). I am sure on GB it will be the same, but i am afraid what will happen after upgrade on ICS I hope i will not have any problems. What do you think?
And what about camera? Has improved with ICS?

Why would you want that instead of the task still running (or being cached rather than killed) because there's enough RAM? Thanks for proving my point.

It's the Galaxy S5 "Zoom" for anyone who doesn't already know.
Smaller screen, bigger camera.
Whatever happened to the S5 Prime?
The one that was supposed to be:
805 processor (64 bit)
QHD 5.2 screen
4GB Ram
Most of that would be icing on the cake, but the fact that the S5 stuck with 2GB RAM is really a big reason I'm not jumping on upgrading. Heavy multitasking with a number of apps running is just so sluggish with 2GB RAM.

hmm S5 2GB ram is getting the job done , I haven't found sluggish performance what so every in heavy multitasking & GS5 is smoother then Note 3 that holds 3GB.
The LG G2 with 2GB is a different story though , After kitkat update device performance became shot on many levels.
A great benchmark video found at ATT GS5 forums,

3gb isn't really required right now. Android apps are not that advance. Unused RAM is wasted RAM, AOSP always helps with the "sluggish" you speak of

Wish that was the case for me. Even with a full wipe and clean install after about a half a days worth of normal usage my phone constantly is hovering around the max in RAM. I'm constantly having to goto the RAM manager to clear memory, otherwise tasks start to really become hung up in the response time.
Even things like a google search will become so lagged that the working circle just keeps spinning. Once I go and clear memory the search is back to normal like you would expect.
Unfortunately, this solution has to be repeated about every half hour and it's just really a major annoyance that it seems to be in need of more ram as my resources constantly seemed to be pushed to their max.
So why is my phone so slow and not responsive unless I clear the RAM if unused RAM is wasted RAM?
Even with clearing it, the least it will go down to in terms of use is .96GB - and typically shoots right back up to 1.37, 1.42, or 1.44 GB is use within a matter of minutes? !

Like people above me said bloatware. Have you even rooted? Or disable apps running in the background? Your never going to win by constantly closing apps ever so often. Let me tell you a secret, they will keep restarting back up. Most users outside of xda won't notice this, meaning almost everyone who buys this phone. Since you come here, when Roms come by, get them!!
