Losing Bravia eng. if bootloader unlocked? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

In the rooted topic ShallaX mentions you lose the Bravia engine if you unlock the bootloader. Is that really so? That would really suck as it's one if the main selling points. I hope i misunderstood, so please tell me it ain't so.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2

I have been wondering as well as if you flash a custom ROM will the bravia engine activate again ?
Sent from my Find 5 using Tapatalk 4

Once you unlocked without backup the TA (Now can't also as backup TA need root)
The Bravia Engine / X-Reality will be permanent lost in photo viewing, the video part do working.

This really destroys my motivation to get an Ultra as I need root, but losing Bravia totally sucks. Not getting the full quality from the screen makes it pointless.

Just a detail here: Bravia Engine is only used in Album and Movies. If the BL is unlocked, it usually deactivates in Album but is still used in Movies.
So in all other apps - there's no Bravia Engine. So it isn't a feature that is THAT important, at least not to me. If you use QuickPic or any other app for photo viewing - BE isn't there. Using Photoshop? No BE etc.
So the only loss would be in the Album but to be frank, the Ultra has such a gorgeous display that BE isn't that important. I prefer QuickPic and the photos looks absolutely great.
It had been different if BE had been active all the time like an improved graphics driver but that isn't the case. I think it isn't a good idea to base the purchase on a feature that is only used in two apps.

Be patient... DoomLord already found new exploit and Sony promised to help build booting kernel...

Yup, BE is/was more important on the Z since it has an awful screen. The ZU has a great display straight out of the box, so I don't see this as a major issue.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Personally I load my photography works in 1020p to 24MP jpeg into my ZU, I cant'r really tell a difference between with Bravia or not.
I guess Braiva Engine would really help for lousy screens or your native file is low resolution.
Which again.. to me I don't see the point in getting a large screen device in FHD and above resolution to view anything below 720p.
Actually.. when I view 720p shows on my ZU I can actually tell the difference in quality between the same show in 1080p.. So IDK how I could tolerate any image or show that is less than 720p.

I don't know about the BE2 currently running on the C6082s out there, but yesterday I've tried a live display unit in Xperia store, and I checked it was a C6833 protoype. It has X-Reality in it, with some demo app that plays videos with some on-screen comparation between X-Reality and normal mode.
And boy, it IS different. VERY sharp (and I didn't notice noise from sharpening) and the color pops even more. Well, I don't know if I'll even realize the existence of X-Reality in real-life usage (and whether the x-reality itself will have the same effect as the demo in real-life scenarios), but seeing the demo made me a bit OCD about the absence of x-reality on an unlocked bootloader device..
Ha, I can wait for the x-reality firmware update and root w/o unlock bootloader solution and backup TA, if any motivation to unlock bootloader suddenly arise :silly:

Will you lose xreality if you unlock as well?

No one really know yet, but it is high possible lost as well.
X-Reality look like just another better version of Bravia Engine.

There's no ready solution for a one click quality picture. If you want it iPhone style with overcharged colours, adjust white balance and ISO.

Get a good half-pro camera, e.g. Sony NX1.
The best suggestion...
You wont get much better quality as all generic camera software will use the firmware libs/drivers - you could learn to dev android sdk, then mod the camera/drivers, work out how to change the quality matrix/compression with in the camera apk, devise how to convert photos for raw image format using the camera libs/firmware for better compression/ratio etc.

You cant make xperia s camera any better than default ability,
the only thing you can do are taking some great apps, or just buy the Sony NEXF3 :good:
Here are my suggestions:
1.UCam:the best all-around free camera app
2.HDR Camera: when you click it, it will take 3 photos in same time and combined with best quality
3.Cymera: used to take a "beauty" face picture, and not look wired.
4.Line Camera: if u wanna upload ur pic on facebook and chat with girls, use it.
I personally find the camera much better than the one on the 4S. The only issue I had was that when you ask it to take a photo straight out of quick launch, it would be horrible. Blurred and over exposed. The greatest single change you can make to the Xperia S (IMHO) is to change the quick launch camera option to Launch Only. Startup time is still 3 times quicker than the 4S, perhaps more, and perfect shots every time.
Root ur XperiaS

[Q] scenes mode

Can you chose scenes in manual mode, while you are on 20 mpx, or 15mpx?
or is just on 8mp??
thank you a lot!
You should be able to
I donr see why not
And i also dont see why sony would remove

Scenes were only possible in 8mp mode on the Z1 so it's entirely possible that it will be the same in the Z2. The camera hardware is the same in both.
I'm using it and can confirm scene mode only works with 8mp

Photos automatically resizing after taking a camera shot

Hello,
I have this annoying issue that when I take a shot with the stock camera app, the photos are automatically resizing. The issue happens not all the time, so I don't think it's a setting issue. I've attached a example of how it looks like.

I have the same issue on mine! It works fine at 20MP on superior auto but doesn't work well with 15mp and just squishes the picture!

I suspect you've answered your own question, try uninstalling 20MP superior auto. If that fixes it try asking the devs of the application what is going on, if not post again here.
In general if you have an issue I'd always suggest disabling / uninstalling any apps that could be affecting it, in this case leave just the stock camera app, and then enabling mods one by one until you identify the rogue app.

Do you actually notice any difference when changing between display enhancement modes

I really can't spot any difference with x reality turned on or off. Same goes for super vivid mode. Do I have to restart the device for the changes to take effect?

Camera quality CM/AOSP vs stock.

I keep reading about the lesser photo quality of CM/AOSP compared to stock but I can't really see it.
I've used stock LP, then Cloudy's 2.2, then Euphoria and to be perfectly honest I can't see it. I'm a terrible photo nut and enthusiast and made many many comparison shots, but to my eye, picture quality on CM/AOSP is nothing but great.
For a little context, I've just very recently switched to the G2, coming from Xperia Z1 and there the difference between stock and CM/AOSP was incredible. Stock was so so much better, however I can't say the same about the G2.
And I'm not using any fancy 3rd party camera apps, just Google's camera and I find picture quality to be stellar. Honestly... What's the deal?
Here at some shots taken with Euphoria and Google camera (and a clip-on macro lens, but that doesn't improve quality... It just magnifies) are they anything but great?

I have to agree with you here. I have strained my eyes multiple times across all sorts of apps and stock cameras, and I just cant really see a discernible difference.
If any difference, I think its mostly due to post processing done by the stock app and the colour corrections etc.
Nice, informative post this.
Those are all very good pictures. The quality is good but all of those photos were taken with good lighting. CM/AOSP really struggles to focus and give proper quality in low light.
what about front camera ?
and what about low light shooting conditions - from what I've heard, that's where stock shines

same for me, i think just "mental paranoia:good:"
Those pictures just amazing. How much post processing did you do?
Personally I find aosp cameras slow to focus and very slow between shots. I consistently miss shots especially little ones. That's why I just stick to stock and does the job nicely.
Other thing is video mode, on stock you can pause and continue recording and I find it very useful. And if am not mistaken only stock can use ois
Yeah, a few of those were taken in very good light, but some weren't. Also there is no processing of any sort in any of those shots.
And regarding low light conditions, quality is not bad at all. See these for instance - no noise, no artefacting, blacks are black like they're supposed to be.
Again, these are straight from Google camera, no processing of any kind.

Honestly, as far as good lighting goes AOSP and stock are very similar.
The most noticeable feature is the nightmode as stock has a higher maximum ISO/working HDR. There's the ported stock camera which does wonders in nightmode, but not so much for HDR.
Forgot to mention, I mean the most noticeable differences are in VERY dark areas, or a panoramic view of city lights at night.

Second one has a bit less color distortion.
Thats the Google camera on default settings. First one is ported stock, on default settings. However, things start to change when you begin to lower the ISO. Then you can see the stock camera IS superior. Lowering the exposure to -1/-2 on Google's camera helps with better low-light shots, but the stock one is clearly better.
