[Q] HOX+ Temperature and Lag questions - HTC One X+

Guys i've been wanting to buy HOX+ .. but i heard a lot of talk about the device overheating and also lagging cuz of the lack of RAM !!
plz i'm really confused here .. i like the stock sense interface a lot .. i got used to it and have been using it since i bought my HTC Incredible S even after trying a lot of different ROMS i came back to stock ...
I need HONEST opinions plz ... i'm a student and so far getting money is really hard for me ... i don't wanna buy something that i might regret buying later, or having to stick with it while i'm not satisfied... my questions are :
1. Does the HOX+ feel laggy when using the stock sense ?
2. What's with the overheating problem ? usually they say that it starts overheating and reaching temps of 55 and highier sometimes when gaming .. is that true ?!
3. Does it really lack RAM ? or is it the sense consuming a lot which makes it lag ? and will the sense 5 be lighter on the device than sense 4+ ?
4. and ofc .. should i buy or not ?
To anyone who will answer .. your help is much appreciated !! thanx a bunch in advance !!

Happy one x+ owner since february (would have bought the One but that 32gb think is definitely a no go, and i never bought anything but htc since 2007, but had the opportunity to play around with loads of gs2 and 3s...)
Enough with the intro, in everyday use its perfect, 1gig of ram is plenty for normal use, itll always sit between 680 and 870 with the stock rom. If you use it heavily, youll get no more lag than with any other android phone with 1gig of ram (example, try and launch skype, youtube, real racing, a heavy webpage and switch between them a lot and real quick with a gs3, same result.. worst case scenario, the phone will not respond for 20secs max and happens to me 1-2times/month tops).
Heats a lot, theres no denying that, while on heavy games (again, real racing, shadowgun, nfs, asphalt and drains battery pretty quick with those apps).
On a gps app (tomtom, navigon,...) It also heats a lot but then, the problem is that it also will stop charging (ex, with a car kit-charger) because of high voltage and will wait until its cooled down to go further with charging.
It feels just a tiny bit less snappier than a gs3 but nothing really noticeable.
Again, 64gb it something to own, all my music (10gigs) my game roms (15 gigs) and my apps and games (25gigs) still allow me some room to take loads pf pics and shoot videos.
Im on stock 4.1.2, still havent felt the need to flash anything on it and reports say that ot feels even snappier with sense 5, which appearently will use 100mb of ram less, says another xda fellow on the update post.
I have a german phone in belgium (same region) so i can update as soon as i get my update.
One tip though, since we cant remove the battery, i have planned on killing it to send it sometime close the the end of my warranty period for htc to replace it.
Last think i really appreciate, is that the case of this phone os made of rubber, which makes it very resistant to dropping and shocks (already fell 5times on concrete and the screen is intact - lucky me maybe?)
Sorry for the long post, i hope i could help bring the light on your interrogations.
Got mine brand new on ebay for 440€ btw.

Not during normal use. The only time I've seen it lag is when an app is misbehaving, which doesn't happen often
2. What's with the overheating problem ? usually they say that it starts overheating and reaching temps of 55 and highier sometimes when gaming .. is that true ?!
It does get pretty toasty. I hit the thermal cut-off (where the phone turns off on its own) once. If you see the green/red light flashing, stop doing what it is that you're doing and let it cool down.
OR you can download SU Root Tools from the market (it's free) and set a CPU temp status in the notification bar so you know what it's at. You can also have it sound an alarm when it goes above a certain temp. (It repeats "CPU temperature hot" over and over till it goes below the threshold you set)
3. Does it really lack RAM ? or is it the sense consuming a lot which makes it lag ? and will the sense 5 be lighter on the device than sense 4+ ?
Not in my opinion.
4. and ofc .. should i buy or not ?
No. You should send me the money and I'll buy another one. :highfive: lol

Thank u sir !! Much appreciated .. this overheating thingy .. it can get pretty nasty I see .. that's bad :/ well i don't play games that much .. not the heavy ones atleast .. anyway thanx again mate !

No problem. Not sure when the flashing warning lights come on, but I have the cpu temp in the notification bar like I said and the alarm set to 60. Anything over that, IMO, is too much.
And honestly, you'll feel it. You can feel it on the back and on the screen itself (at the top half).

Wahhh 60 ? The highest battery temp i hv got so far is 45.
I seldom play heavy games and i use my hox+ for whatsapping and chatting, listening to music and some internet browsing only, may sometimes play casual games, so the phone is really snappy on me.
In my opinion it really depends on ur usage, if u take photos/listen to music a lot HOX+ is definitely ur choice, but if u r going to flash ROMs/ doing a lot of multitasking maybe Nexus 4 suits u better
PS I'm on stock 4.1 rom, Sense 5 update hvnt reached my CID_622 yet

HTC One X+ is a great phone! Only if you want to play heavy demanding games, it maybe isn't the phone you're looking for. Don't get me wrong, performance of tegra 3 SoC is really good, but it is not the best for games anymore. But as far as i found our, the (most of times) small lags are related to GPU performance. And the "overheating problem" only occurs when playing really hardware demanding games.
But if gaming is only aminor matter to you, i think it is still a good choice! It has everything you need: more than enough cpu power for daily tasks, 64GB of memory and 1GB of ram, which is also enough for everything you could normally do.
And Thanks to the devs here there is still room for improvements, if you like to flash custom kernels and roms!

I use mine for gps a lot to track my runs with Endomondo and I've never had any heat from my HOX+, with some games yeah it gets hot but I'm in Vietnam so everything gets hot here anyway. Ive never had any freezes or shut downs due to heat. On average I get 2 days on the battery with light gaming, alot of sms, viber, Facebook and some browsing when I'm outside along with music. Overall I'm quite happy with this phone.

Actually heating has pretty much been fixed due to undervolting, cpu quiet governor an gpu decoupling, the gpu can run at full speed and the cpu can run at a lower frequency and voltage with more cores active. With sense 5, many of these tweaks aren`t even necessary as it uses a two stage ondemand which gives great idle and light usage batterylife and good performance when needed in games. Ram problems are also gone with sense 5, unreal engine 3 games used to reload the launcher in 4+ but in 5, even the animations remain smooth with the app in the background. The already great One X+ got even better with the sense 5 update.

hi
i have my hox+ for 1yr and i haven't experience any problem it does get hot when the cpu is at full capacity but is not a problem for me i get 1 1/2 to 2 days of moderate use.this is my gps my router my laptop my media player and it have never let me down so this is a phone that you will not regret buying trust me on this one. my wife have the gs3 and my brother in law have the iphone 5 and my phone is kicking ass......

The device does not lack ram. End of the day it has double the min requirements to run windows 7.....
Also on overheating .... It's a myth... Yeah the device does get hot. But what do you expect? When you put a fairly powerful quad core soc in a device with no cooling and little ventilation. It's gunna get hot. But all the overheating hype is cause by people who don't actually know what safe temps are. They feel the outside of there case get hot and start to worry, but they don't get that the phone has to dissipate heat some how.....

The cpu will throttle down before reaching unhealthy temperatures (I don't know the exact value). The only critical problem is the battery, which shouldn't be exposed to too high temperatures over longer periods of time.

Laggy roms

Hi all,
Had my EVO 3D now for two days and it's a great phone, the 3D features are superb (probably a novelty but i'm enjoying them for now)
I've rooted and s-off'd my phone and the bootloader is unlocked.
I've installed a few roms, mostly sense, but pretty much everyone i have tried is quite laggy, not all the time but laggy in parts, now i was under the impression that this was pretty much the same phone (bar a few bits) as the sensation.
The sensation roms that i've had were superb, no lag (or very very little) and they worked perfect for the most part.
Is this because it's not been developed for -for very long? Or is this something which we will have to get used to?
EG: If anyones wondering what i'm on about, spin your carousel around and when it's about to re-align with the last window, it jitters slightly, the sensation on lets say insert coin never did this.
I'm running leedroid at the moment, the roms good it just stutters a bit, i've also tried king cobra, mikrunny, shooterbeats, the only one i've not tried is honeycombo.
Oh and i'm using lees kernel too at 1.5ghz max 400mhz min.
I'm not having a go at the dev's because in my eyes they're a bunch of geniuses whom we could not have our beloved androids without, my hat comes off to all of them, it's just i'm noticing a fair bit of lag through all the roms i've tried.
Any one elses input on this would be good.
Cheers.
I have used a few ROM/kernel combinations that would cause my second core (CPU1) to go completely offline. Its not supposed to be on all the time (although you can set it to be); but it is supposed to come on under heavy load. This tutorial helped me solve that problem. Maybe will help you too?

Thanks m8, I did get the app, bought it too nice app but i haven't noticed any change in terms of speed or performance and it does have that irritating lag when swiping between some screens.
I know sense isn't perfect but my DHD was smoother than this with sense 3.0 roms.
EDIT: Just checked the setting within system tuner pro (has to be pro, the free one doesn't allow the switching of the cores) , don't set it to boot, set it to init.d script instead, the second core hadn't come on active until i did this, it's probably going to rinse my battery but if it makes it smoother (which it has) then great.
Thanks man.
----------------------------------
So in short.
Buy system tuner pro.
Switch on all cores, via settings - Active tweaks - force all cpu's online - init.d
Go back and select CPU from main page.
Knock up the frequency to whats safe / needed.
Enjoy a smoother rom and a shorter battery life
i like fresh never lags on my phone stock kernel its probably as close to stock as you can get but it has a lot of goodies i don't like all the flashy colors of other rom's if that sounds like what u like check out fresh

I will do m8, thanks.
I've been living with the Desire HD and Sensation for some time now and the roms on both of those phones are superb, no lag whatsoever, they just work and i only realised how well when i put the two of them together and swiped the carousel, the sensation was about 10fps better off, very noticable when you compare them, i really hope the dev's get their heads together on this.

Yea i'm using Leedroid at the moment, it is the fastest rom out there for the GSM EVO3D but i think there is still room for improvement.

need opinions considering buying =]

Hello everyone,
i currently own the good ol' fashion nexus one and i decided to stick with htc.
right now i have my eyes set on the evo 3d but i would like to have some more opinions on the phone from people who acctually own\owned one.
how fast is it?
hows the 3d?
is the 1gb or rom that restrictive? [evo 3d gsm users]
does it run demanding games well? [shadowngun, GTA III, dead space, modern combat 3, etc..]
whats the highest stable overclock and how does it effect performance?
and some general notes you have to say about the device.
thanks you all and best regards

this phone is very good but if you want a phone that you expect many different roms to flash maybe you should get another phone
I say just wait for the phone that everyone wants = more devs

i second this. good phone...not an extreme amount of community/dev support. there is plenty, but it's not a phone that has some great number of experimental roms or anything.
Good phone, but imo should go with something newer if tech interest you. If not, go for it. Can get it really cheap now compared to the other phones with same tech. 3d is just a plus, not a must have but fun to play with and show off to friends.
And 3d boobs =
From the giant: Galaxy Note
It currently has the best resolution, openness of storage, good processor speed, and ram available on sprint. The 3D is an OK extra but even without it it's the best phone right now.

does anyone really even use the 3d capabilities?
how fast is it?
The UI has no lag, if that's what you mean
hows the 3d?
It's annoying and strains your eyes, but pretty cool the first few weeks. After that, you really stop using it.
does it run demanding games well? [shadowngun, GTA III, dead space, modern combat 3, etc..]
Yep, no lag
whats the highest stable overclock and how does it effect performance?
The phone's stock clock is 1.2Ghz. The processor is meant to be at 1.5Ghz so that's the highest stable you'll go. Some phones can get up to 1.8Ghz and 1.9Ghz.
Additional Notes:
Don't get the evo 3D unless you need a new phone now. This phone is 8 months old meaning the new Evo will come out soon. Also, the GSM Evo 3D doesn't have much dev support. If you want great dev support, try the Samsung Galaxy SII.

Never played any of those but I would imagine so. It has pretty beefy processing power and as I said before, if you put a custom ROM and kernel on it then things become VERY smooth. Benchmarks are subjective and everyone has their favorite, but some people can pull over 4000 score in Quadrant benchmark with this phone.

Highest I have seen is just over 2GHz, but I dont think that is stable 100%. Highest known to be stable is a bit over 1.7GHz, most are completely stable around 1.5-1.6GHz range. I have my phone set up with a 2 stage OnDemand governor with a max speed of 1.4GHz
Performance from overclocking is big, especially on a custom kernel like AnthraX. That kernel has different GPU and bus speeds in it as well, and if you run between 1.4-1.6GHz you have an overclocked GPU as well as overclocked CPU. Going above that lowers GPU to stock speeds to help stability.
Performance is VERY good at stock though and you shouldnt need to OC to run anything.
Battery life is average Id say, but if you get just the right setup and tweak things just right you can get amazing battery life. I have gone over 3 days on a single charge with very light usage. On heavy usage it is like any phone and only goes about 5-6 hours.

I keep kidding myself that I'll watch a 3D movie or so one of these days. So far I think I watched half of Avatar.
well thats kind of disappointing i thought this phone would have better opinions...
well then i would like that ull recommend a phone if possible id like to stay with htc... loving sense and loving build quality.. and the gsII isnt a possibility for me...
i wanted the evo 3d over the sensation xe because of the ram..
the question is... is it worth the wait and the money to wait for the next gen snapdragon s4 htc devices which will probebly be annouced at mwc in a month..
great phone fast responsive with the latest update battery life has been great for me. every game i threw at it , it played it with no lag . I think it will take some time for devs to really get a hold of the 3d thing to get that and 4g into asop roms. I found this app on htc hub called phereo thats a 3d pic sharing app thats got me hooked on the 3d side of it again lol. my stable max over clock is 1728 mhz hope this helps

I don't know what these guys are talking about. This is by far the best quality/price you could get right now. There is the Motorola Atrix 4G which is also cheap but not as good as the Evo3D. The only dark spot is the camera which is good but not as great as other phones.
Evo 3D is always on the top 5 most popular phones on XDA. so I guess deving is still ongoing. Most devs are just waiting for an ICS leak to get back. And GSM dev section has nearly all flavours: Sense 3.0, Sense 3.5, AOSP (MIUI, ICS and CM) and I have no doubt that even if some builds miss one or two things, they will get mature in the near future.
Anyway, my choices would be:
If you have money, want speed with good quality build and can wait: HTC Edge.
If you have money, want speed with good quality build and cannot wait: HTC Amaze.
If you don't have money, want speed with good quality build: HTC Evo 3D.
And since I do like to use my phone (using like calling family, checking mails, feeds, etc. not like running useless benchmarks) and want it to stick around, I would never recommend a plastic phone like GSII.

I actually use 3D a lot. I have watched quit a few movies, played almost all of the games and love just checking out 3D pictures. Some people complain about it but I love it. I love the phone overall. The only thing that would stop me from buying this phone, is the possibility of a quad core soon.

tanx bro:laugh:
Nothing wrong with the Desire X at all.
Mine works fine with ICS. I am waiting for the latest JB to come out bugless:fingers-crossed:
I just had a LCD screen issue that the suppliers fixed under warranty.
The phone does everything that it is supposed to do.
If you look after your phone, it will look after you.

Is the jb update is conformed?
yes, look at name of threads or google
and beware, there are some grammar nazis who would eat you alive for last post
btw if you have enough funding, get some nexus device (as much as I like my dx, I had to say that)
I can tell you that I am very happy with my Desire X, when running on a custom rom it is incredibly fast, especially for this price.

exactly, best price/performance ratio I have ever seen in smartphone area, but still, it isnt flagship, never was intended to be, never will be. If you want good phone for good price, go for it, I can only recomend. If you want really high-end phone, or just bigger screen, there are other options, but not DX.
if you have a low budget then buy this phone... its not that big and super fast for games and others...
if you can afford a more expensive phone then buy something better
but just to know that devs started working a lot on this phone and it will become a lot faster
Am looking phone for gaming without lags
which is best for tat?
not much costlier
I would say go for Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini . It's got 1GB RAM , more internal storage and a better graphic chipset .
It's just a little more expensive .
One of my friends has it and it just feels alot more polished and smooth . The extra-RAM are no big deal though . I can play NOVA 3 on my DX and still have about 100mb+ free RAM , but on S3M it lags less . I guess the graphic chipset helps alot .

Ok, why dont you try and open as many apps until the ram is full. Then try to use your phone, see what happens.

Nope do some tests before you say that. In windows when the ram is full or already used or the program needs more the program crashes then you have to close/exit it manually. In android the system closes apps automatically to free up more ram for the app that you are currently using. More free ram= less lag. Ever wonder why there are so many scripts for ram/memory managment if free ram is useless. Anyway no use convincing you. Hehe just sharing what i understand. Cheers

The Nexus 4 is nice yes, but still not the best, it has many problems and features that didn't work right and some bugs which Google didn't fix for many updates....
If you have enough money, I would choose the new HTC One

desire x is a good device dont bother looking for galaxy s3 mini its not released nor will it release in india. The nexus 4 if released at the US price point is an excellent buy else if from what i have heard @500$ seems kindof pricey.
Look at LAVA XOLO Q800,Micromax Canvas HD, Spice Titanium s1 ,and all the other local brands if you aren't so hung up about custom roms(I for one am).
If you are willing to wait for say a month or so there is Xperia L(Available for preorder) ,Optimus L9 And ofcourse there is Galaxy Grand.
EDIT: #zen-mode-ON
the desire X is the true choice of Needs and Wants it is actually everything that you need(yes gaming is also very good eg Dead Trigger). But then what exactly you want a 10 inch screen 16 core processor 1TB ram the demands are endless so you have gotta make a choice a balance between needs and wants.

I am not saying that every last piece of ram is used by cache, after phone reboot, you have plenty of free ram, until you start acctualy use apps and fill cache a bit, but linux is working with ram not unlike windows, you said that yourself. I never said memory management is useless, ofc it is usefull, a lot, my point was that claiming "I can play NOVA 3 on my DX and still have about 100mb+ free RAM" has same value as "I had pancakes yesterday" ... I could have, while playing nova 3 much more free ram if I am after phone reboot (and plenty of other ways), I can have less free ram if I used plenty of apps before, it still wont change quality of gameplay, smoothness or anything (unless you really try to make it laggy with anything you have got, which is possible ofc).
quick edit: I am multitasker, I have never met any lag apart from starting apps and other "regular ones" android is handling this pretty good

ok got your point.i have a different experience so maybe we have different opinions. no point in debating. cheers
to the ts. i really dont like the cpu and gpu combo in the dx.. gpu not that good.. if it had a better gpu maybe i would buy this. go find a device with a good gpu from mid to high. this is just low end gpu. adreno 203 < sgx 531 based on my experience and benchmarks. so better find a cellphone with a good gpu that how i choose a new phone though.

I didn't mean that having more free RAM is a bonus , I just wanted to point out that RAM is not something to take into consideration when gaming . Speciffically , that it's got more than enough for any high-end game . Having enough or more than enough are both better than NOT having enough at all .
Indeed I am a lot more familiar with Windows' way of dealing with RAM , however I've seen how Linux works as well , and even though you are right in saying that using more RAM grants you better multitasking , the way Android handles the RAM on the DX is far from perfect . From my experience , Samsung devices manage RAM A LOT better than any other brand I've tried so far (at least on low / middle end devices) . HTC doesn't do a bad job , but it's not to be praised either , at least not on the DX . Then again , look at an LG's RAM management and you'll most likely start crying xD !

[Q] Thiking of getting an Xperia Sola for cheap. Worth it?

Ok so, as the title implies I'm thinking of getting an Xperia Sola on the cheapside (135€) almost brand new. However I do have a few questions:
1. Would you say the phone is worth the price?
2. Do you think it is a good phone?
3. I mostly use my phone for multitasking and gaming sometimes, so does it fit the bill? The 512RAM thing scares me, my Galaxy W said it had 512MB but it had like, 378MB.
4. How is custom rom development for the phone?
Cheers and thanks in advance
1. It's definitely worth its price, even when there is few cons.
2. More Yes than No, It has interesting design, a technology wich is available only for this phone only, called floating touch needs to be improved tho, but It's quite usable in browser. Built quality is not the best, could be better... after a while u will notice some squeaks and other noises it is fixable.
3. That's because there is usable RAM and non usable, can t really explain where the unusable goes, It has to function somewhere else in phone...available RAM is 368. It's enough if u stick with GB android version on ICS takes allmost 90% when no apps are working. Don t recommend to buy one if u are willing to update it to ICS... it would be a huge disaster!
4. I have seen some of the costum versions, for gaming as well, haven't tried yet, i am sticking with the stock one, for battery saving.

You can update to ics, its working flawlessly and even better im on jellybean for last month without hiccups. Nice phone good price...overall im satisfied. Dont listen about ics bugs, use custom kernel for better battery, performance is awesome. The mussing ram is allocated to gpu, mali eats quite a lot of ram.

I gave this brick to my wife, i dont want to hear about this phone anymore - even sony left this phone.
Had HTC Desire X for a while which had arround 300 mb free RAM most of the time and a very good battery life. Now SGS3 and am very very happy.
not worth.

[Q] One X+ speed sucks, more like HTC One X-

Hello, I have been using my new X+ for a few months now, but I am finally at the point were the speed makes the device pointless. My original One X seems to destroy my X+ in every benchmark and just real world gaming. (These are both on AT&T). Any ideas? I feel like the X+ was a major step down from the original, for now in my book I am calling it the HTC One X-
Thanks in advance for any replies..

That sounds like you are doing something wrong.. Running too many background processes perhaps ? Facebook (~40mb) Whatsapp (~50mb ) and BBM (~60mb) + there are heavy launchers Themer (~60mb) All those processes takes a lot of memory and since the HOX* got 1gb of ram only , and 600mb already taken by the sense rom , that means you have less than 400mb free ram.
I used to have similar issues, but i learned to manage my usage, and honestly now i have more battery life and a faster phone.
First of all , always open your recent apps and always remember to remove all the apps you are not using.. This takes a lot of memory.
Secondly, Start monitoring your background processes. Try to download a task cleaner (Although not recommended but useful in such cases) to monitor the usage of your apps and when you have less than 100mb left then you should know you are doing something wrong.
The lag starts around the 100mb mark so its recommended to try to free up ram so you have ~150 / 200 mb free. And once you manage this out your problems will be solved.
Ofcourse I am not saying that only having 1gb of ram in the first place was a good idea, but learn to adjust Good luck

As far as i know the AT&T HOX did not have Tegra3 SoC but a Snapdragon S4 dual core soc, which has a better per core performance i think. Also heavy gaming apparently seems to be far more depending on GPU performance than on CPU and by now it is commonly known that Tegra3 GPU isn't the best thing for gaming and it never was. So I'd say the performance difference between AT&T HOX and HOX+ is related to this.
In terms of benchmarks, do you really care about those scores? They don't say anything about everyday performance, so as long as your phone works smoothly.
I have the international X+ myself (with ARHD8/Sense5 installed) and performance, except high graphics quality games, is very good. After some days without rebooting it suddenly starts lagging, but after a reboot everything's fine again.
Try watching your ram usage as Ghand0ur said, this may help in terms of performance although i never saw my phone using more than ~850MB of ram.
