Xperia Z Tablet on 02 UK - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am the proud new owner of an Xperia Tablet Z, coming from an awful iPad 1.
I bought the tablet outright, but didnt realise that it has been locked to the O2 network so I can't put any data sim in that I want.
Does anyone know how to remove the sim lock on this tab? My local O2 store where I bought it told me today that they can't/ wont do it, which I find pretty unfair, as I didnt get it on a contract on anything
I am also not happy about the ridiculous 02 splashscreen that greets me when I turn the tablet on. Looks bl00dy terrible,
Despite these issue I love the looks and performance from this beast.
Just hope I can address both issue with the help from you kind fellows!

I would've thought it was obvious that if you buy from a network provider it's going to be locked to their network! Take it back to o2, then go next door to carphonewarehouse and but one from them, they're devices are always unlocked / unbranded.

But, before you do take it back, make an ftf of your firmware, just in case any other users might need it, there's a distinct lack of ftf's available for this device!

Not necessarily. My iPad was purchased directly from the newtwork and that wasn't locked
I won't go to CPW because its more expensive, +£100

I guess that's the price you pay.... I would've thought that o2 would give you an unlock code seeing as you bought it without a contract?
You can get rid of the o2 splash screen by flashing a generic fw onto it, but, as I previously mentioned, make a backup of your current fw just in case...

[Q] can a 3 branded payg sgs2 be unlocked

Hi
I'm looking at picking up a sgs2 phone from the three (3) store on a payg deal. I wanted to quickly check, I should be able to sim unlock this no problems right?
Also are there issues with debranding three versions?
Thanks

Think so
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064978
mine came unlocked. what i'm more interested in is if we can have the original three firmware from someone, so that we can slap unbranded one onto the phone and then revert back if we need to (like bringing it back to three in case of a fault or something like that).
If you can sim unlock the SGSII which others have managed via that thread, then why wouldnt you buy the o2 payg for 399 rather than the 3 version for 499.
(At least those were the prices 2wks ago)
My bad, Ive seen theyve taken it off PAYG

Thanks All - I ended up getting one from Phones4U.
Turns out they have completely unlocked stock samsung devices without any bloatware. I thought this better than de-branding & unlocking etc.
Cost was the same, £499 but as it was stock I avoided the costs of unlocking etc.
ohmz55: Would like to have done this, but O2 stopped the deal.
Thanks

If you post the product code and the firmware details (pda, csc, modem) I can try to get it.

O2 no longer offer it online, I was able to get one for £399 from O2 store just yesterday however. The guy in the shop did say he wasn't allowed to sell it on pay as you go but that he was just going to ignore that!

[Q] SGS2 in phones4u or carphonewarehouse UK

Hi. I'd like to buy a SGS2 in p4u or CarPhoneWwarehouse. I've got 2 questions:
1.How much would it cost?
2.Will be Unlocked and Unbranded?
BTW. Which shop do you prefer?
EDIT: If i would buy a branded phone is there posibility to make it unbranded(i really hate operators logos )?
Got mine at Phones4u, It's unlocked and unbranded. In both shops they told me it would be totally unlocked and unbranded whatever network I chose.
Pay as you go costs £499.99 in both shops, but you have to buy £10 credit.
As for contract?

Can somebody tell me what is different between branded and unbranded phone (especially SGS2) ?? Only logo and firmware updates or something else.

Currently it is only a bootscreen and a couple of wallpapers. However updates will be delayed and it's likely they will add more bloat later on. Orange ruined my HTC Desire with their crapware.
You can however easily change it to a stock firmware etc. A guide is available on the dev forum.

Took me a lot of blagging, but I managed to get my GS2 for £400 from Carphone Warehouse on the day they got them in. This is because they're doing some new policy where they will match your network's price. O2 are doing offline GS2s for £400. I had to go back to the shop 3 times, but I finally talked them into it. Was the last one in stock too on the day. This was even before the "Pay as you go" packages were on their system, so I didn't have to buy a top-up either. Was quite proud of myself.
Weren't going to pay £500 when O2 were doing them for £400!
Got mine from carphone warehouse on a new O2 contract and it's completely unbranded.

C6833 UK LTE Firmware updates?

I was just thinking where are the updates for the uk version of the z ultra haven't seen one yet others have received 4 or 5 strange. 14.1.B.1.510 firmware Z Ultra C6833 seems to be the only firmware we have and sony yes we have bugs too.
Don't think it's been actually released on the high street yet only selected online retailers might have something to do with it

Yeah it is, got mine from O2 on Saturday.
I got my XXXXX.532 through the PC companion app. I don't know if you have a build prop setting that would be different preventing an update but I have the HK intl version C6833 in USA (Part # 1275-2581.2)

Did you get it from instore cause i been traveling the west midlands to get my hands on one nowhere stocks em and half the places ie Carphone and phones 4 u both saying they don't know when they will be getting em. im expecting delivery of mind end of month and would cancel if i could find one on high street.
Yeah instore, my local o2, which is rather small had two instock. I went in this afternoon regarding my missing headset and they still had one, so i would have a look about, also its very easy to debrand from o2 firmware.

Excellent Sony service

My Z Ultra's screen smashed (while in a case inside a bag... ho hum) while on safari in Africa last week.
Realising it would not be covered by the guarantee, when I got back to Spain I checked out the prices to get the screen replaced and was quoted amounts in the region of €200 (crazy when you can get a new one for about €260 now).
So I contacted Sony. They picked it up and repaired not just the screen, but also the scratched back panel, a broken button and the scratched USB and SIM card covers. Of course they applied a software update too. Came back like brand new.
And the best part? They charged me €70 (including VAT and collection/delivery).
I have to say I am very impressed with Sony's service (and I'm well pleased to be able to give my original Galaxy Note back to my kids again, it seems so slow in comparison).
So I would definitely recommend checking out Sony's repair service even if you are not covered by the guarantee (the phone was rooted and physically smashed).

Wow... That is pretty good actually. Could you share the direct phone number you called so that people are not bounced around? Or is it just the regular Xperia Care 800 number?
Thanks for sharing.

It must have been under manufacturer's warranty...
Still pretty good nevertheless...

I'm not completely sure, since I did just purchase off eBay. But they did honor the warranty, and sent me a new mobile phone ? , and quick turnaround , made me happy ? .
The ZU sent in for repair looked well used, with plenty of scratches ,especially on the back and camera ? . So I'm ordering illumishield protection front and back, to preserve the mobile phone ? ,and its screen .

Anybody picked up this device from O2 UK?

I've had Sony Z5C on contract from O2 UK years ago and it had "bootloader unlock allowed : no" in the service menu (ruined my life) and just wandering if they have done the same thing with the Xperia 1?
Looking to buy this device or maybe the 2, so if anyone has picked it up already on contract from O2 could you please check this for me.
Many thanks in advance.

It's not always consistent so even if someone says they can't/can on O2 doesn't mean it will be the same for you. All down to luck of the draw

It's the main reason I never bought from O2 for a long time. I learnt the hard way with the Xperia S back in the day!
Anyway, nowadays, O2 only sell their phones unlocked on their Pay Monthly contracts (not sure about PAYG). Regardless, I can confirm that my Xperia 1 bought directly from O2 is unlocked, and the bootloader can also be unlocked.
Hope that helps.

Thanks that's good to hear, put me off buying from them for years too, any O2 bloatware on it? O2 boot screen? Any other nasty stuff added like tether entitlement check for example? Hope they have given up with all that

Haven't tried tethering, but there was an app installed which could easily be removed. No O2 boot screen which is good.
I'll still be flashing to UK generic firmware once it is available!

Thanks for helping me out. I now know I'm most likely going to be safe getting a Sony device from them again! How are you enjoying the 1? Looks a great shape for one handed use. I'm going to wait until the size of the 2 is confirmed, I'm really hoping it's the same width just with a less elongated screen, that will be perfect imo

It's a nice handset, however suffering from a few performance issues at the mo. Hopefully it should be sorted with a software update, but noticing the odd micro-stutter here and there.
Still getting used to the form factor, as it can be tricky to use in one handed mode - not so much for the width, but for the length. It can feel like the handset will topple i.e. being a bit top-heavy, which is due to how long it is. Probably will get used to it. Will be interesting to see how the Xperia 2 moves things forward...

That sounds annoying, I've currently got a 2.5 year old OnePlus 5T that I've dirty flashed over 20 beta updates without ever doing a wipe and it's still absolutely flawless performance with 4-6 hrs sot everyday and a ridiculous amount of apps installed, the only micro stutter I've ever seen since I've had it is in a 3rd party app, bit of a lag swiping away a tab from the recents in kiwi browser and that's it. Hopefully it gets sorted for you in an update soon.
I'll go into a store and hold the Xperia 1 and 2 when it's released, I only want a new phone because I have a slight crack in the screen of my 5T so in no major rush right now I don't wanna regret what I buy.
I would have bought the OnePlus 7 pro but the size is just stupid IMO and if I bought the normal 7 I'd just feel cheated I was missing out on the things the 7 has.
Thanks for your help with this and if you don't mind when the Xperia 2 comes out and I go phone shopping I may drop you a pm to see if any updates have sorted the performance issues for you.
Sure - no worries at all!

I know its been a while from this post. I just pre-ordered Xperia 1 II from O2 using a relative account (I live in the US and relative will mail me the phone once received). Paid full price of the phone up front and plan is month to month (postpaid not prepaid). Do you know if the phone will be unlocked out of the box? or an O2 sim needs to be inserted first time? O2 website says all their phone shipped after 2019 are unlocked but wasn't sure if an O2 sim need to be used firs time you turn it on. That's how it was for some Samsung unlocked phones 2 years ago. Would appreciate your response
No need to insert an O2 sim. I inserted a Three network SIM straight away and it worked fine. I don't believe anything has changed in the intervening year.
