[Q] HTC J Butterfly stuck after installing Droid DNA SW - HTC Droid DNA

Hello
I got HTC J Butterfly from Japan and have been trying to get it working in Finland since.
We tried first to change the phone to Taiwan version (x920d), but the result was no good 2G.
The next step was to try to change to phone into Droid DNA,
Starting point:
DELUXE_J PVT SHIP S-OFF
CID-KDDI_801
HBOOT-1.41.0000
RADIO-1.01.10.0201
OpenDSP-v6.120.274.0114
Original HTC J Butterfly ROM
What was done:
1. installed jdk1.7.0_25 and android sdk tools, platform tools and google usb driver (installer_r22.0.5)
2. installed ViperDNA 1.3.5 ROM (via CWM recovery from external sd card)
3. installed engineering HBOOT (see below)
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip xxxxxx.zip
4. installed twrp recovery: twrp-htc-dlxj.img
5. modify (CID: 11111111 and IMEI and MEID according to my phone) in mmcblk0p5 block file and copy to /dev/block with dd:
dd if=/sdcard/mmcblk0p5 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 (copied to /sdcard/ with adb push in recovery mode)
NOTE1: HERE ADB STILL OK
6. fastboot oem writemid PL8320000
NOTE2: HERE ADB CANNOT BE USED ANYMORE
NOTE3: phone was encrypted and asking for password (cleared by formatting internal SD)
7. flash firmware
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip dna2.06firmware.zip
7.1 installed twrp recovery: twrp-htc-dlx.img
8. installed engineering HBOOT (see below)
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip xxxxxx.zip
Current situation:
MONARUDO PVT ENG S-OFF
CID-11111111
HBOOT-1.39.2000 (PL8320000)
RADIO-1.01.04.0308
OpenDSP-v6.120.274.0114
No ROM currently
Fastboot USB (OK)
ADB (NOK)
USB connection (NOK)
- cannot connect to device from Windows 7 or Windows XP, because the phone/device is flashing as portable device called:
WPD FileSystem Volume Driver
What I would like to do is to flash ROM.
but since I cannot transfer any files to the system it seems to be impossible.
I can flash in fastboot, because that is working just fine.
Any ideas how to proceed are more than welcome !?
Thank you

Can you run the RUU ? Or if can not because windows does not see it, run the RUU to extract the files to temp folder, then flash the zips manually via fastboot?
You prolly have seen this thread;

Thanks for the reply.
What do you mean by running the RUU ? fastboot oem rebootRUU ? (that is working for me)
I was also thinking that I cannot flash anything for DELUXE_J since I changed the moid. Not sure if this is true ?
Thanks

Hello again
Currently I'm assuming there is no way to install ROM without working USB/ADB, because no replies.
If you know such method and needed files please let me know.
Thank you

Hello
Raised the topic since I have not received any replies.
Most probably someone knows how to get the phone working again (install ROM).
Please help. Thanks

Since you're S-OFF you could probably just change the model id back to the J Butterfly the same way you changed it to the DNA

For changing the model id I would need to copy a block file to the device. Currently i cannot do that.
Any other ideas ?

In the OP you said you changed the model id with fastboot oem writemid.
Since you're soff, you should just be able to do that again, back to the J Butterfly mid

Yeah why did you flash DNA files on a j butterfly anyways man you probably messed the phone up .

In the OP step 5 I copied Droid DNA block file into my phone and then changed the mid. I was thinking that without putting back my original
block HTC J blockfile I cannot change the mid back. Of course I could try the command but I'm worried that the incorrect block file mid combination will brick the phone totally.
Is there any RUU available for Droid DNA that could be flashed through fastboot ?
Thanks

The idea was to try to make the phone working in Finland (the phone was locked to AU network in Japan). It did not work with x920d SW (2G NOK) and therefore decided to give the DNA SW a go.
Yes, the phone might be messed up, but still I would like to think there is a way to recover since the fastboot and recovery are working.
Thanks

I guess the better question is who gave you the idea to try and flash dna files on a butterfly to my understanding they are similar phones not the same.

The idea was mine.
We tried x920d SW as well and that was working apart from the unstable 2G connection.

I can run the RUU*.exe until it checks the USB connectivity. In the temp files I can find the data1.cab file which most probably has the image files that I would need. The remaining problem is that I cannot extract the data1.cab file.
Does anyone know how to extract the cab file ?
Thank you

Done and now I can open/extract the rom.zip. There are many .img files inside.
Now I need some help how to proceed ?
Please remember that the phone is S-OFF and engineering HBOOT is currently installed.
Do I need to change HBOOT ? What about S-ON ?
What is the best way of flashing the images ?
Thank you very much for your help.

You can try just flashing the whole zip. Do fastboot oem rebootRUU and then fastboot flash zip ruu.zip

AFTER fastboot flash zip rom.zip:
MONARUDO PVT SHIP S-OFF
CID-11111111
HBOOT-1.33.0001
RADIO-1.00.00.1023_3
OpenDSP-v4.120.240.0920
eMMC-boot
fastboot flash recovery twrp-htc-dlx.img
TWRP recovery installed
fastboot flash zip PL832.zip
MONARUDO PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-1.39.2000 (PL8320000)
Unfortunately the USB/ADB is still unstable. Also it seems that the ROM does not boot up. The droid boot image can be seen. Then it goes away and I can see in the upper part of the screen USB debugging connected flashing...
Fastboot interface is ok, bootloader and recovery as well.
Let's see what could be the next step/try. Currently it seems that Droid SW cannot be used with HTC J Butterfly HW !?

All I can offer is they obviously have differences or the kernels would be the same. Try using the proper kernel for it and see if it proceeds any further in booting the ROM. Making it think its a DNA doesn't change the hardware itself, at a minimum the kernel needs to be the correct one foe the device hardware, not name, and maybe the ROM just to eliminate drivers and libs being incompatible as well.
Or is the kernel the same?

su
dd if=/pathtonewhboot of=/dev/block/yourhbootpartition
Be very careful with the ENG Hboot. If you're just flashing ROM's and Kernels, you don't need it. ENG Hboot's make it easier to break things...

Code:

then

and it worked beautifully :good::laugh:

Worked perfectly for me, the bar got stuck 3/4 but the terminal had it finished, just issued a fastboot reboot.
Now..for the radio...fastboot flash radio <radio.img>?
Edit: nvm got the radio done too, for those wondering like I was, I was correct its fastboot flash radio radio.img. My first HTC device so I'm still learning.
can this be flashed the same way we used to do with the TBolt? by placing the appropriate file name on the root of the SDcard and it will automatically load when booted into hboot... it looks like PL83IMG.zip is the proper name... and where can I get the radios from the OTA update or do I just pull it from the OTA PKG?

Since we have no SD card, HBOOT doesn't look for the PL83IMG file, and yes, just pull the radios from the OTA and fastboot flash them and you should be good.

Since the DNA does not have an SDCard, it does not search for a PL83IMG.zip to the best of my knowledge. The updated firmware can be found in the firmware.zip in the OTAPkg.zip: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390288116658474558
im confused on how to extract the radio.img.. after i unzip the ota i cant extract the files from the firmware.zip it keeps giving me an invalid error... do we need this hboot just to flash a radio?

[Q] ATT HOX+ fastboot flashable ROM

I'm sure that this has been asked before, but is there any ROM which I can flash using only fastboot? ADB is NOT working on my device, and it is bootlooping with no backup or ROM on it. I am not sure if a nandroid backup would be usable with only fastboot, and I know it might not be possible, but I have literally no options available. I cannot push files to my device, of course I have no SD, and AFAIK there is no currently released recovery that would allow me to use my device as a USB mass storage. If one IS released, I would appreciate a link to it, as it would let me save my data. If I can flash a nandroid backup with fastboot, would someone please link me to a copy of said backup? Otherwise, any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, L5132

I assumed that was it, however, I could only find the .exe version. Would you be kind enough to link me to a .img version? I tried the .exe one, but it would not recognize my phone and said it was required to be in the OS, which I cannot currently do. Thanks, L5132

RUU are .exe's. You can't get them as .img files. Make sure your in fastboot not hboot. Your phone should say "fastboot usb" before the RUU will work.

Roaming issue

okay so i am having the roaming issue where i flashed carbon rom from nos and now my phone is stuck in roaming. i know i need to RUU back to stock but i am having major issues getting that to work. i am 2.24 with moonshine s-off and i am trying to follow this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2017525) guide to get back to stock and get my phone working again but every time i run the RUU it says i have the incorrect version and gives me the option the exit or go to the recover.
can anyone help? i really need to get my phone up and running again even if its on stock but i cant seem to get it to stock. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Download 1.15 stock hboot. Rename to PL83IMG.zip. when u renamed it make sure is not zip.zip cause this file is already zip so u try only to rename it to PL83IMG (right click the file in your pc and check properties to make sure windows got it already as a zip extension) and place in the folder that contains ( in ur pc) your android-adb folder*
there is where any zip should go, with the exception of user preferences location. (or different folder named by the user)
Step 1) adb reboot bootloader
Step 2) fastboot oem rebootRUU
Step 3) Command to directory containing your renamed hboot zip (i.e. C:\android-adb\)
Step 4) fastboot flash zip PL83IMG.zip
*** When it says it is done in the terminal/cmdprompt execute step 5 )
[The green bar only fills up about 75% of the way]
Step 5) fastboot reboot-bootloader
Profit. Put the RUU Folder in same directory. right click and run it as administrator

am Sure you know this , but sometimes we overseeing a simple step. The basic make sure usb debugging is check, fastboot uncheck, try change to different usb port 2, cause usb3 doesn't work as well are you using Windows 8? try windows 7 pc because w8 have some security issues to need to work around. Dont forget first to try to Update Android SDK manager.
Try to change the location of your android-adb (look inside of adt-bundle-windows) and move android-adb folder to C:\android-adb
because we don't use any other file but android-adb, so is more easy to command to this directory, and is in this directory
where we put the RUU and the hboot 1.15 renamed as PL83IMG.zip. then run the commands explained by torrented dev*
Step 1) adb reboot bootloader
Step 2) fastboot oem rebootRUU
Step 3) CD to directory containing hboot zip (i.e. cd C:\android-adb\)
Step 4) fastboot flash zip PL83IMG.zip
*** When it says it is done in the terminal/cmdprompt execute the following ***
[The green bar only fills up about 75% of the way]
Step 5) fastboot reboot-bootloader
Help please
I've been able to return the hboot to 1.15 but the RUU.exe wont work. I get error 170. I use a stock htc cable. My hboot says its locked but i can still boot into my rom only when I have the ENG hboot but the RUU wont work unless im at 1.15. When i try to lock my hboot again it says its already locked but i still have root, rom and recovery access. I would love a definitive answer that will fix this phone before i smash it.
Thanks!:fingers-crossed:

Just did this the other day. Go here and get one of these rooted roms. Between this being flashed, and restoring the stock boot it was smooth sailing from there. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471836

Not a problem. Glad you got it working, Should also mention that I was trying Carbon also, and even after I restored and rerooted I still never got it working on mine. Ended up being able to just flash another rom without having to RUU the second time.

Back to stock?

How can I go back to stock on the HTC amaze 4g? I want to restore back to stock like if I bought it from a store, I'm on a custom Rom, is it possible? If it is, can someone point me in the right direction....thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure you need to re-lock your phone and then flash a RUU. You will be on un-rooted, bone-stock ICS. I recommend that you use a T-Mobile RUU.
To do this you need to have ADB installed on your computer. Open up ADB in command prompt (navigate to the platform tools folder) and then hold shift and right click. You should see an option to open a command Window.
When it's open type in " fastboot oem lock ".
That should lock your bootloader. You can now download a RUU and flash it in the bootloader. Just rename it to "PH85IMG". It should be a zip format. Put it on your external SD card and let it flash in bootloader.
You can also find RUUs here. Chose the one for your native carrier, if your phone is unbranded, I recommend the T-mobile one.

When it says locked it's locked. When it's unlock it may say unlocked or juopunutbear on the top heading in the bootloader.

I'm sure that whether your bootloader is (re)locked or not, it has to flash the ROM anyway. The problem will come later when you try to boot the ROM cause it will fail.
Be sure to put the .zip in the root of the external SD card and name it PH85IMG

Thanks for the help, I'm back to stock, the only problem I'm having is my phone turns off and reboots randomly, when it restarts, the percentage on the battery goes down a lot, any suggestions?

Try to reflash the RUU and if problem persist then the problem should be in your battery.
And ya check the md5sum of RUU( no need to worry more about md5sum but you may check for surity)

I did flash the RUU and the problem still existed, but it stopped when I put a piece of paper behind the battery, for some reason I think the back case was kinda loose and now since its tight, it hasn't rebooted

I'm trying to do that with an old Amaze I have. I have a Wind version so I downloaded a Wind (Globalive) RUU. Do I still need to rename it to PH85IMG ? Also it came into an exe. file and not a zip, but there is an OTA available that is a zip file. Will a exe file still flash in the bootloader? Thanks in advance

Well it should work exactly the same way. You still have to rename it to PH85IMG since it's device specific not carrier specific.
But if your RUU is an exe I think you have a different type of RUU. For that type, it's a software that updates your phone connected to a USB. For that, you need to connect your amaze to the computer and run the RUU installer. This might be your only option if wind doesn't have any other RUUS.
Another easy way is to go to the development section, and look for the thread by krook which has a collection of RUUS. It's on the 3rd page I think. Download the latest ICS one, rename it to PH85IMG and put it on your external SD (not in any folders) and it will flash in the bootloader.
There is also the Windroid toolkit which just got fixed and updated so that can help assist with the file pushing.

If it's an exe (the one that has an installer and all that Jazz), then no. Just connect your Amaze to the PC and let it do the work.
For the manual updating method, you need a micro sd.

If you are s-off (or s-on if that zip is the encrypted one
you can simply rename that file to 0P3PIMG.zip and place it on your SD card (not internal memory) and boot the phone to bootloader and let it install it that way.
I can tell you if that phone boots to boot loader you need a new screen name as it is not true.

what if its decrypted?

You are s-off so do what I said above. Rename. Drop the file on your physical sd card. Boot to boot loader. It will locate the file and run the ruu. The make sure you run it twice.

Download this zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2587336
Copy this zip file to same directory as your adb/fastboot files are located
Reboot the phone into the bootloader and connect to the pc via fastboot
Run these commands
* 1.fastboot oem rebootRUU
* 2.fastboot flash zip nameofzip.zip
(Run #2 again as it will throw an error. This is nothing to worry about. First part of flashing the decrypted ruu flashes the firmware, second part flashes the rest.)
* 3.After it finishes flashing run: fastboot reboot
* 4.You will now be back to original verizon rom
