probably, maybe you should give a bit more detail about your friend's mobile setup and someone maybe able to help

It sounds like you have the same problem is I did; rooted, custom recovery, stock rom. You just need to find a stock recovery (search this forum) and flash it to your mobile. After that you will be able to update OTA. I used the tool from hansson2000 (don't remember the exact name..). Very easy.

[Q] CWM recovery

I rooted my samsung galaxy I9300 international version recently. However, after root, when i open CWM recovery , i get the following message " this version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-CWM v1.1 or newer. It appears you r running a different recovery. Various features have been disabled".. what is this supposed to mean? will it cause any problem when i flash a custom rom? or when i create a backup of the stock rom? any help would be appreciated
Many thanks

R: [Q] CWM recovery
What u need to do is install "rom manager" from app store (its official app dont worry) and install the LATEST clockworkmod recovery version for your phone. After youve done that just boot in recovery and ull have the very latest recovery so flash all you want and ull be fine.

Well you can get it easily if you have a vzw kdz then use the kdz/tot extractor in the dev section and convert the recovery.bin to recovery.img using an app like magiciso

Well the way the op recommends it is:
1 - Copy recovery.img to root of SDCard
2 - Open Terminal Emulator (or adb shell) with root and run the following command-
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
3 - Reboot
But I don't know if that would work in all cases/haven't tried, the other way to flash it is by getting into fastboot mode via adb or something and using following commands:
-fastboot erase recovery
-fastboot flash recovery recovery.omg

Is this OK for 4.4.2 20c FW? I see the original post is from last year. Just don't want to brick my newly bought phone. I just did root and install TWRP recovery. Did you manage to do it?
I needed to update too, similar thought process. Wondering whether i can flash this *.img using Flashify. I also made a backup of my stock recovery.img before I installed TWRP, could that be used either?
And most importantly, was the OTA update smooth after you got stock recovery back?
Worst case scenario, no TWRP recovery & unable to boot...

S3 Stuck in a boot loop, need help

Hello guys
I've been searching for a few days how to fix this problem but nothing helps, so I came to ask here.
I've tried flashing emergency firmware , also with .pit files ; tried repairing it with KIES too. Nothing.
It's S3 Blue 16gb version.
It's impossible to get into recovery , but I managed to get in it with CWM(after trying at least 100 times) , and these are the errors I got.
i.imgur.com/duLiUsD.jpg
i.imgur.com/aVgSvLt.jpg
i.imgur.com/GRxIyhD.jpg
It shows Samsung galaxy S III logo and stays there or reboots all the time.
I can get into download mode and flash whatever I want with odin, but whatever I flash, same issue.
Looking forward to your advices/help. Anything would be appriciated.

I had that issue before. Try to update your version of CWM or just change and use philz TWRP. Then wipe/format data, system, cache and dalvik then try again to flash the rom of your choice :fingers-crossed:

I need to try like 100x times to just get into CWM and then when i try to wipe I get those errors I posted in photos.
Philz / TWRP doesn't even want to boot into them.
When I boot into recovery there is android standing and some sort of progress bar and it starts to fill and the phone restarts to galaxy logo again..
Bump //
I tried flashing stock ICS but no luck.
I flashed stock ICS with "T flash" and " NAND erase " turned on and I just got android Downloading mode.
Then, I went to Kies and did firmware repair and I got past Galaxy screen and phone started turning on and installing apps
and rebooted again with the same issues.
