Would I need a Nexus 7 (2013) after buying a ZU?? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi,
I'm currently writing from a 2012 Nexus 7, and since a friend of mine is going to NY in September, I was thinking about having him buying one to take back (in Italy would it will cost around 240 euros, with the $ exchange it will be around 170, big saving), but I was wondering...
I'm currently waiting for Sony to release the LTE version of the ZU here, so I don't know if having another ~7 inches around would be a waste of money ending in a drawer somewhere.
What do you guys think about it? Do some of you have both devices (not necessarily the Nexus, another 7 inches tablet would be the same) and would not even think about leaving the latter at home?
Give me your advice...

after getting this, definitely not needing a nexus 7. I was in market for one since it launched though.
I might be looking at Nokia unannounced tablet this winter but only because I like testing new gadgets

I don't have a tablet, but i've often thought about getting one, but i can't really see the point, especially when i'm going to buy the Ultra in a few weeks. The Ultra and my laptop should cover everything, and i don't think a tablet will change anything. But that's just me though, so it's really hard to tell if you should get a Nexus or not. If you want one, get one. If you don't want one, then don't.
The only reason i would buy a tablet would be if i traveled a lot and i didn't want to empty my phone battery while on the move, but.. it's really cheap.. so.. i...damn it. Fine, get one, and if you aren't using it then just sell it(?)

all the tablets i've had in past (ipad, acer iconia, sony tablet s ..) it ended up being a coffee toaster. only because my laptop ran circles for 'daily use'
now ultra z allows me to have full estate 1080p screen (downsized the DPI ti 265, from default 320) and its awesome. this allows me to not consider any 7-8in tablets which aren't fully mobile since they require data connection (Wifi or pay extra per month for 4G connection) and fits perfectly in my pockets
now i am thinking of doing away with my Vaio Z this fall and shop for a 1080p 10in tablet that offer full size keyboard. i.e. Nokia tablet and definitely windows 8 to continue the true Microsoft outlook experience
/enough of ramble .

I have a Nexus 10, which is brilliant for the times that I can make use of its size.
I was thinking about getting a Nexus 7 for more portability but after seeing the Z Ultra I realised that a Nexus 7 would be completely redundant if I got a Z Ultra.
You'd only get the Nexus 7 if you wanted to save a bit of money I suppose, or if you really had to have stock Android and always the latest version.

I actually have both and enjoy it.
I use the n7 at home and the ZU outside. The ZU battery life is too short to be my only consumption device.

Difficult one to decide...
I have the 2012 N7, and still use it daily when I am at home.
When I go out, I used to take my old phone and N7. Now, obviously it is not necessary.
But when I am at home, I still prefer to use N7 fr general web browsing and simple games. 6.44'' vs 7'' ...it seems small difference on paper, but actual usability of N7 is much higher (as a browser).
I just got my Z ultra rooted, so I am going to try and convert the Chrome browser into tablet mode (one of the gripes I had was Chrome in Z ultra is in phone mode). I hope it is as usable as N7.
Should you buy N7 and ZU together? I think not.
Now I am in the market for something I wasn't before - That's the 10 inch tablet. I might get Tablet Z...

I haven't touched my n7 2012 since I got my z ultra, im just about to whack it on ebay uk!!

I can't really decide whether to go with both or just the ZU... I guess the decision will be postponed until my friend goes to NY, based upon my bank account balance by that day...
It's not the weight/size problem of carrying both around, because I usually have a bag for my wallet, S3, N7, extra battery, juice pack, various cables and usb thumb drives and an HTC Wildfire which I use as a modem for the N7.
Overall, replacing the N7 with the new one, the S3 with the ZU and probably using the S3 as modem then wouldn't matter in terms of weight...
I actually am realizing that today my N7 has been on standby all day long, and consumed only 7% battery (Cm 10.2), so that is a big deal.
Maybe I'll get the new one, I'll keep this one for my daughter (6yrs old), I'll use the ZU for everyday use and the new N7 when I'm at home or traveling for more battery performance.
Anyway, keep sending your 2 cents!

I guess it boils down to your personal preference. I use the N7 at home while my phone is charging. The battery life on the N7 is just amazing and the Tegra is great for games that supports it. So in the end, I wouldnt say the ZU will replace the N7 as a tablet for me.

I have had a N7 in the past but went to the note 2 I found I was using that for things I would normally used the Nexus 7 for, and anything more I would jump to the laptop for real "productivity" work.
I've traded in the Note 2 and I'm waiting for my Z Ultra to arrive. I can't really see the point in a separate 7" device. I would either go for a 10" tablet or more likely a laptop as a second device.

I would say that the n7 2013 is kinda disappointing, not that much of an upgrade. They traded CPU power for a rear camera and 2mpix front cam. In term of gaming the tegra inside the first is really good and with custom kernel I can run any game without a lag. And if it is for browsing I really don't see the need to change.

I have both. I love having the Nexus for reading, the screen is still larger. I also like having the pure google experience.

Looks like we have Sony trying to be creative again
This might be my next purchase.

TF700 vs Nexus 7

Hey guys,
I currently have a nexus 7. I bought it on Tuesday, and I'm loving it so far.
I also pre-ordered one through Google Play the day after I/O and just received that one yesterday.
My question is, should I return them both and just get the TF700T instead? Has anyone had any experience in either devices? I love the little form factor of the Nexus, but seeing as I am in college, the TF700T + dock would seem to make more sense. Does the 10.1" form factor really make that big of a difference on portability? What about weight?
I own an old HP touchpad, but it has a cracked screen + needs to be restored to factory defaults (issues with that, SD mount problems after updating CM9) and I'll probably sell the thing.
What do you guys reccomend? I use my tablet for web browsing, gaming, catching up on tech news and an occasional youtube video/netflix movie. In college I could use it instead of my laptop for most work that doesn't involve programming or running any cisco software (unless I use remote desktop or something)
I also use a Galaxy Nexus for a still pretty large mobile web experience, should I get the TF700T? Also, I couldn't find it anywhere else but tigerdirect or amazon with a markup.
ANY tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
That's hard to answer really. In my opinion, there's a huge difference between the 7 inch and 10 inch tablets. The 10 inch is about twice the size of your nexus 7. Yes, it weighs more too. I use my prime as my primary device, but I don't do any programming. You have to really think about what you're going to use it for. The 7 is perfect for reading and web browsing (most sights), but the 10 is more like a small laptop.
I would not trade my prime for a nexus 7, but the smaller screen doesn't fit what I want. I think a 10 inch device can be your primary, but I don't think the 7 could.
i would take the tf700t over the nexus 7 and it will be updated to jelly bean soon.
My consideration is you need 2 hands to operate nexus 7 anyway, so why don't use a bigger screen instead ... so i'm sticking with my prime.

Best solution, since you have 2 nexus 7. Return 1. Have a 700 & nexus 7. I have prime+dock & nexus 7. they compliment each other well.
They really can't be compared. 700 more powerful & has bigger high quality screen. but nexus 7 is a powerful little device also. Its no slouch. 7in. Form factor is far more portable.
How exactly does this post belong in this section of the forum? As you might see I am not a heavy poster but I follow the forum very closely. Can you please post on the correct device post, instead of just choosing the most popular in the hope to get more replies.

I'm sorry but I did not see a dedicated forum for the TF700T. So where was I supposed to put it, the Nexus 7 forums? Almost everyone there would have said to get the Nexus 7 based on price alone. I feel like the owners of the TF700T would have a better judgement on the subject, having spent a good amount of cash on their tablet.

technically I have 3 N7's. I have the 2 I have for myself, and I told my mom to get one. So I could use hers when she's not using it if I want to be able to have a 7 inch tablet. But there's no way I am going to keep 2 N7's and a TF700T in my house, kind of a waste of money for someone like me (part time retail salesman and full time college kid).
I think I might just return the N7's and get the TF700T. Where should I order it from?

Well it's been a very long time (30 years) since I was a "college kid", but I would have thought that the TF700 with the keyboard dock would be a lot more versatile than the N7. And, though the N7 is more portable - carrying around a TF700 + dock won't be difficult. I currently carry around my TF201 and dock in a case and it's still roughly only 3 pounds.
I'd get rid of N7 and take TF700. Actually I bought TF700 already 7 inches and lack of microSD is a deal killer.
You can order TF700 from Amazon or bhphotovideo.com
I'd take one TF700 over two N7's any day.
N7 is just a downsized version of the 300 sans mem expansion whereas the 700 is a step above it. No comparison there.
How is this thread allowed here? Just the other day an N7 thread discussing all of the defects and problems w/ the N7 was removed since it wasn't related to the Prime, but this one is okay? If anything, at least yesterday's thread compared the N7's defects w/ the Prime's defects. This thread literally has nothing to do with the Prime.
Anyway, to answer your question, I'd have to say neither, unless you feel like dealing with a company that practices poor design and has zero quality control:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781237
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919
However, if you insist on one of these two devices, I'd go with the N7. The hardware may be falling apart (i.e., read about the display defects in the threads above), but at least the software is rock solid since it's done by Google and not Asus.
does the Nexus 7 suffer from the poor I/O performance that the Prime does?

no. on rl sqlite benchmark I scored 33 secs. overall on I/O performance(I posted the screenshot in another thread). that put my nexus 7 at the top of the list. other nexus 7 owners have scored similar also. prime issue is likely software/driver wise still.

I own the Transformer Prime, and just purchased a Nexus 7 for my daughter (11 years old)
If I/O performance refers to how long it takes to transfer data between my PC and the tablet, I'd say they both perform pretty much the same.
I've copied movies to both devices, and it does take a few minutes. However, they're between 700MB and 1.2GB in size, so I'm not that surprised or bothered about the slow transfer.
Haven't done any scientific tests, but based on general use, I don't find transferring data/files to the Nexus7 noticeably faster then when I transfer to my Transformer Prime (and I usually use AirDroid, so I transfer wirelessly, which I'm sure is slower then via cable)
Nexus7 is a fantastic device, and my daughter loves it! I wasn't willing to spend $500 for her, and I also felt the smaller size was a better fit.
She does lose a front camera, and microSD slot. She still has a camera for Skype, which she uses a lot, and the tablet has a beautiful display, and is buttery smooth!
It's an amazing device for the price! (not letting my Prime go, however)

I based what I said off of benchmark scoring(from me n others in nexus 7 forum) and playstore downloads and installs. The apps download & install on nexus 7 alot faster than on prime. Plus the lag is nowhere to be seen on nexus 7 during the download/install of apps/games, unlike the prime. I can have all that going on in background of nexus 7 while doing other things and nothing will freeze up or lag.
Speed transfer from prime or nexus to a pc will be nerfed from it using MTP mode. If mounted as a USB mass storage device, like how it was on older android builds, those transfer speeds would be alot faster.(from what I've heard and read up here in xda)
I cant let my prime go either. But MY nexus 7 has definitely been stealing attention away from my prime. I used my prime earlier but had to put it up and take my nexus 7 off the charger. I'm really liking this 7in. Form factor. Far more portable and easier/lighter to hold. Not too small either(Im 6'5 with big hands so typing on Nexus 7 with thumb keyboard is seamless).
Ditch em now and get one again later
If either are a 16 GB Nexus 7, sell them on eBay and get more than retail for them (or at least equal to retail, assuming they are in pristine condition).
Take money and buy TF700 with dock.
When fervor for Nexus 7 comes down, go buy another one to fill your 7" tablet needs. You may or may not want to get one after you have a TF700. I have the TF201 and I'm trying to tell myself why I don't need a 7" tablet. I think I just want to **** with Jelly Bean. Hell I still might just up and buy an 8 GB just for the hell of it and gift it to my dad when the newness wears off.

this. I already decided I'm going to get the TF700T. And I've put them on both Ebay and craigslist, no bites so far but hopefully someone buys them. If not I'll just return them within my 2 week time frame.
I'm going to try the TF700T. I read ALL about Asus's quality control issues, and if I can deal with the I/O issues, I'll keep the TF700T. if not, I'll return it and get a galaxy note 10.1 when they come out
Anyone else keeping tabs on the Nexus 7 forums? Asus' crappy quality control is killing many of their users too. There are multiple people who have done multiple exchanges and keep getting units with separated glass (the primary issue), lines of dead pixels, unresponsive touch screens, and blown speakers. I predict this is the last Nexus device we'll see made by Asus. Persistent perfection! Ha.

Is the Nexus 9 worth getting?

Hey I was just wondering what everyone's opinions were on the Nexus 9. I need a tablet to use just for watching Youtube, browsing the web, reading in bed and streaming to my Chromecast often. I've heard quite a few complaints about the device and it's definitely not cheap so just wondering what people think of it? I'm also wondering if there's any other tablets around the corner I should wait for instead? Thanks!
That's a no from me. Despite my gut feel that the tablet has the potential to be the champ, it is virtually unusable for me without suffering considerable frustration. I also think it has been a flop sales wise and that this is one google regrets. Of all my nexus devices, this is the one which needed 5.1 the most and will be the last, by a fair margin, to get it. And who knows when that will be?
I've heard great things about the shield, that's where I would be looking.

Agree with this, even about the Nvidia Shield part. I've lost track of when the 2015 Shield is coming out, but that will be a good buy. Even my 2013 Wifi Nexus 7 performs better than the N9
I say yes

Agree with this 100%.
Wait until 5.1 drops for the N9 before making a decision. It will either make it the great tablet it has the potential to be, or confirm it as the lemon that it is now.

It's hard to say, folks' experiences seem to vary so widely.
I've had mine since slightly after launch. I use it for remoting in to my work network, listening/playing music, browsing forums, web browsing, and light gaming. I don't experience the problems that some report here -- except, if I have multiple chrome tabs open or switch away from chrome and then go back, I do experience excessive web page reloading/refreshing. But no overheating, no lag, etc. Not sure if it is luck of draw in terms of hardware, app selection, or what.
I get about 7-8 hours battery life with mixed use. I am bone stock in terms of rom, kernel, etc. I haven't even rooted it.
I would say read through the "post here if you love your nexus 9" and "5.1 rolling out now?" threads in the N9 General subforum. You will get a good sense of the positive and negative viewpoints.
Bottom line for me is that I would buy it again if I had the choice to make again.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Forum Fiend v1.3.2.
I have already rooted my Nexus 9, but when it was on stock I didn't have any performance issues like with other people. It was very fast, faster than any Android device I've used up to now. After rooting I lowered the speed to 1.3GHz & it still flies in the games I use.
The 9 is much better for reading than my Kindle Fire thanks to the high resolution, which makes reading less of a chore. Also android now has PowerPoint & Word, making my N9 even more usable as a replacement for my ultrabook.
Overall, my only regret is choosing the 16GB over the 32GB because it only has 11GB free.

My problem with the Shield tablet and why I was looking at the Nexus 9 was the size. To me the size of the N9 is big enough that it fills a void that my phone can't. The Shield seems awesome and I'd get it hands-down but it's screen size is small enough that it's not really a tablet in my eyes..it's like a huge phone if that makes sense?
There's not a major size difference. I have seen the HP Stream 8 in person & found that it's usable as a Windows device.
9 - 9 x 6.05 x .31
Shield - 8.8 x 5 x .36
Also the shield has some advantages like OpenGL 4.x, direct stylus, GRID, and no DCO issues.

There is such an enormous gulf between those with good and bad experiences. When people tell me they love their nexus 9 I am left scratching my head. The thing is a dud for me, certainly I get better performance from my nexus 7s (2012 + 2013). I feel had that I paid so much for a device which seems solid when you pick it up but is a disaster when you use it. Whether you're in one camp or another, Google had paid it almost no attention in five months, that's ominous in my books. Buyer beware.

Ya I definitely will heed your advice. I feel like it was almost a testbench on how a 64bit architecture would work with Android.. I just don't even understand how it can be so expensive for the experience the vast majority of people are having. To me a tablet of that price should just work and be an excellent experience.
Its not perfect
Its not perfect but still new, Still has some bugs. I came from an Aus Transformer infinity t700,
nice screen, but with only 1 gig of ram, and slow tegra3. it was much larger than my nexus 9.
to me the nexus 9 is the best tablet I had in a really long time, it does have its issues, but hopefully they will be fixed soon with software updates.

iOS is better with memory management, is minimalistic, and is meant for a very strict set of specs. All of them use some form of the Legendary Power VR SGX with 1-3 CPU cores max. They have likely optimized the heck out of their devices compared to Android manufacturers.
You could put 8 cores in an android device @10Ghz & watch it barely scrape past Apple's latest offering(s). I don't care for Apple, but it's hard to ignore how well made OSX & iOS are.

The Nexus 9 has been disappointing... It doesn't have a lot of features I'd ideally like to have: microSD, MHL/HDMI, and Miracast being the main examples. And battery life isn't great. I'd forgive those if it was really fast/responsive, and if we stayed on the bleeding-edge with Android updates. Neither of those is true. Also, while it's a good value for high-end tablet, it's not a great value like the Nexus 7 tablets were.
That being said, I think all the Android tablets right now have some fatal flaws. I'm not sure I would pick anything else over the Nexus 9. There's a fair bit to like about the Nexus 9- the screen and speakers being two examples. But if I didn't need a tablet, I'd probably hold off for now. Or, quite frankly, I'd probably more seriously consider shelling out the extra cash for a Surface Pro 3.

My Galaxy Tab S is a leaps and bounds above the Nexus 9 - I bought it after the N9, because I couldn't wait for Google to rectify the N9's short-comings.
Whilst the Tab S doesn't feel as premium as the N9, it is good, solid, hardware (exceptional screen) and a viable software build.
If Google can fix the N9, I suspect the Tab S will end up on Ebay as I much prefer the N9 keyboard over the Tab S's, but at the moment it is no contest.
I have a Surface Pro 3 too - it is a fantastic machine and has completely replaced my MacBook Pro. However, a tablet it is not IMO - it's a touch screen PC with a detachable keyboard.
It's just too big to serve as a tablet (YMMV).

Dave
I've gone through a lot of Nexus 9s. The answer for me is "maybe". Newer sand models are like a completely different tablet. They run cooler. There is essentially no backlight bleed. The back plates are now glued on so no more bouncy center or creaking . I don't have any lag and performance is great. Destroys my other devices. I can't compare to the old white models I had from Amazon because i never kept one for long enough (bleed, horrible buttons, bouncy backplate, or some other issue). Chrome reloading is the only software issue i have. The only remaining hardware issue is that the buttons are just mediocre. They work fine, but they just don't reflect the price. I returned a couple sand models for this reason which is why I have a good idea of the quality of these newer sand tablets.
Unfortunately the Sand models from Google Store are overpriced, and ordering a cheaper white or black model from Amazon doesn't guarantee good quality. I was able to get a $50 Google Play gift card so I'm happy for the price.

Should i (or would you) buy Nexus 9 now or wait some time for new devices?

Hello everyone,
Sorry for pretty dumb question, but i hope you could give me advice! I'll explain my situation a bit, i currently own 10" Chinese Onda tablet, performance is pretty awful, battery life also (~1 hr of reading/browsing can drain 40%), i use it mainly for browsing and reading because gaming is impossible (from one side it is good, because i can spend more time with my family ) ) i never take it out, mainly because of battery life..
So from one side i can live with it with my needs like reading, books and browsing, from the other side it lag's like hell, crashes and battery, well as i said...
So i tried to look for some more descent alternative (one of it could be eReader, but then i still would need another device for lazy browsing or some apps, so i'am more on the tablet side). So i checked what is on the market today and i could get Nexus 9 16 GB for about 300 EUR on Amazon. And as BlackFriday is landing i'am hoping for some discounts, so i'am wandering, should i grab Nexus 9 if it would be available for let's say 250 EUR? What concerns' me is how future proof will it be? Dual-core + 2GB ram seems to be pretty low for today. What i like that it is supported both by Google bot Custom ROM's, so while it is popular device it will have at least some support. But maybe it is too late to buy one today and be patient and wait for future device?
I don't feel like paying more than 300 EUR in any case for tablet, though i could afford it i just don't justify it as proper "investment"
So, that it! Thans for your help and opinion.
UPD: What about new NVIDIA SHIELD K1? What is your opinion, seems like super deal for 200EUR? Maybe except screen size and aspect ratio.
300 Euros is way too expensive for this tablet. Even 250 is too much. If this tablet had a Nexus 5 level of speed and smoothness, it would be worth it. Unfortunately, on stock, it doesn't. As they haven't sorted it out properly in a year now, I don't think they ever will. :crying:
In the UK at the moment, Argos are selling the 16GB version for £150. This is a more reasonable price.
If you are on a budget, I'd also consider the LG V500. Its still on 4.4.2, but the performance is great and it has an SD Card slot. If you know where to look, you can pick one up for £100/145 Euro. the V510 from the US is even better. :victory:

Hi, thanks for your input. I can't find any deal at Argos for £150 :/ About LG, i don't like ones that drop support for their devices.
What everyone think about new NVIDIA SHIELD K1? It will have Marshmallow, 3D performance should be awesome, also i should be able to utilize my GTX 970 here, and it cost £150, only downside for me is screen size, but it is just IMHO, i never used such aspect ratio.

Yes I take your point regarding LG. If you could get a V510, its a GPE device making it almost Nexus.
I cant comment on the Nvidia shield. It does seem strange to me however that the original Nexus 7 had memory issues and the Nexus 9 has memory issues. The both used Nvidia SoC as oppose to Snapdragon. Maybe just a coincidence? I've never had any issues with devices using SD SoC.

V510 from US would cost around 200EUR, and GPE seems to be dead already
New shield seems very interesting device... My hands are itching
I like the Nex9.
I bought the 32GB for $305 shipped and got a nice $12 case, so basically $320 total and I am very pleased. I was mainly concerned with battery life as I like to sometimes leave it alone for 3-4 days and want to have a charge.
I am on Pure Nexus ROM, but even on stock mra58n build I was able to leave it overnight and only lose 3-4% battery. So I can leave it around for say 5 days and still have at least 70% battery.
I get around 6 hours SOT so far from my use but I've only had it a short while so I expect it to only get better as it calibrates.
It has its faults, and something better I am sure may be on the way, but you may find a great deal on black Friday and I would jump on it.
When I saw the 40% off from HTC I did and am glad I did.
Best of luck.
I was a frustrated N9 owner until MM. I still can't believe it! The lag has not returned as it always had within a month of each of my six wipes over the past 10 mos. I tried DU and ran Elementalx. Lag remained and reboots (up to 3x daily) continued. Each flash was a complete wipe. Chrome (I use beta) is still a battery hog--probably what causes the heat, but it's my choice to use it. My tab works the way it always should have. I'm running xposed with gravity box. Everything is running well. For the first time, I can recommend this tablet--especially if you can grab the next HTC 40% off deal over Thanksgiving.

Tab S3 or Google Pixel C

I'm in the market for a new tablet. Is the Tab S3 the best option? What are your thoughts?
Does google movies work on a rooted Tab S3?
I looked at the pixel but poor wifi put me off. Got the tab s3 and loving it. Prefer a slightly bigger bezel making it easier to hold but it's very nice with great performance. Pen is a nice accessory. Can't find a decent cover though!

Yes, Google movies work just fine on a rooted device. After you root your device you'll have to rename the liboemcrypto.so file in system/vendor/lib in order to get NETFLIX working again.
As for picking between the Pixel C and the Tab S3, I have both tablets and I prefer the S3. The Pixel C has known hardware issues (touchscreen stops responding to touch, and WiFi will occasionally refuse to connect to a "weak" signal unless I'm in the same room as my router). Unfortunately, I'm so far past my original purchase date that Google will only replace my device rather than refunding my money. Their replacement will work for a 45-60 days before the touchscreen dies and the replacement cycle begins anew.
The Pixel C has a superior processor, but only 3GB of RAM vs 4GB on the S3; the Pixel also lacks a SD-Card slot. Both devices have beautiful displays, but the S3 has HDR support whereas the Pixel does not. The Pixel is also heavier, especially with it's optional keyboard.
Depending on where you are in the world, the S3 might already be on sale (right now I could get it for $750 vs. $800), perhaps in a month or two it'll be even less (or if your dollar is crap like ours then it's probably better to buy now than wait for it to become $850 magically overnight). If it's actually cheaper to buy the C over the S3 then I'd say go for it. Amazon seems to let sellers gouge the hell out of people so in my case the C is more expensive than the S3 - given the nature of tech supposed to be cheaper with time, logic dictates the S3 to be the better value.
Personal preference but no SD card on the Pixel vs the S3 because Google thinks everything has access to the net 24/7. 32GB isn't enough but that extra storage is sure nice (high speed SD cards are cheap these days, just make sure you're not buying from Alibaba or eBay lol).
Was in the same position before but ended up buying the Tab S3. The Pixel C is a great tablet but it is a year old already. It will still receive Android O but that's the last update it will get. (According to Google, they committed to 2 years of updates for their products)
The Tab S3 was my choice because of the added features Samsung put into it. The S Pen sets it apart from its competition. It will get update to Android O although very late. And im pretty sure it will be upgraded again to Android P before it reaches end of life status (based on past Samsung tablet updates, they usually update tablets with 2 major OS versions).

Thinking About Getting a Nexus 9

My mom is in the market for a new tablet since the last one is officially ancient. I was considering getting a nexus 9 for her because it fairly affordable in the aftermarket. I was wondering if you guys had any testimonies or experiences you wanted to share about the tablet. Looking forward to reading them.... Thanks!

My advice: don't! Your chances of getting a dud are higher than ever. I've had mine for over 2 yrs. It requires regular (every 6 weeks) wipes due to slow-downs and freezes (used to bootloop, too). It's very likely I'm older than your mom (69, in fact), but Android is a hobby so I just do what has to be done to keep my N9 working. Can she maintain it if it's a dud, too? Although a lot of N9 owners who've posted in these forums never had any issues, many of us have. I don't know if she's Apple-familiar, but the newest iPad is actually a pretty good deal. Otherwise, I can't help. I still keep my N9 because nothing else has come along to entice me. I bought it for the larger display, and that has never disappointed me. It's not only large but very clear and crisp. In the end, I will say that I will NEVER buy another HTC product despite how may "great" devices they may have put on the market. JMO.

DON'T
Edit: I should not have been so terse. I would not recommend the Nexus 9 to anyone.
Do not purchase this tablet. Purchase a pixel tablet if you want to have a better experience

Hi, l_4Fhit_l...
I echo the sentiments of the previous posters and their comments.
DO NOT BUY A NEXUS 9 unless you can get one for a ridiculously cheap price AND you're technically capable of dealing with it when things go wrong...
As they sometimes do...
For example, I've just had another (yep, not the first time) hard and spectacular crash on my own Nexus 9, whilst doing something no more taxing on the hardware than performing a simple Google search via the persistant search bar in Nova launcher, and which resulted in a pixellated mess on the screen and a screeching cacophony emanating from the speakers. (See attached photo.)
It required two 'forced' power-downs (long press on the power button) and reboots to get the device up and running again .
I was thinking (after the second failure to boot) I'd have to reflash the thing from scratch. Which is something I've done many times before, but it's a time consuming chore - fortunately the device rebooted without issues the second time I forced powered it down.
The Nexus 9 is OK (not 'great', but 'OK') when it works... A pain-in-the-fundament when it doesn't!
---------------------------------------
So... I recommend you look elsewhere for a tablet. One of the above posters recommended an iPad. My mum (she's 75) has one and has absolutely no problems with it.
Rgrds,
Ged.
There seems to be consensus I guess ... Thank you all for your input. I wanted to get my mom something that was cheap and that ran or could run stock android because that is what she is familiar with. Any recommendations?

Size? Stock Android could be an issue unless you want something you can root. Samsung has some nice tablets (tab A, for one) that don't cost the entire bank but they do run Samsung software over Android. Amazon fire tablets come in a wide variety of sizes, features, with matching prices. I've never had one so can't speak to the software.
Take a look here http://www.androidauthority.com/cheap-android-tablets-268082/ and here http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/tablets/best-cheap-tablets-top-budget-options-1314545
I have no idea where you live, but if you are or you know someone who is a Costco member, they have the 8" Tab A for $130.+ $10. Shipping for the next few weeks. I don't know if the price is same in store.

Oh, come on. It's not that bad. It's fine with 7.1.
If I bought a tablet today, I would buy N9. (Not Pixel C, it's big and heavy.)
I love it, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone ever though.
Unrooted, stock, came home today and the OS is toast, going to have to re-flash and set up again. This is the second or third time in two years. The thing literally does nothing for me other than run a book reader app and has bombed doing nothing.
It also sometimes decides not to charge. Not a bad connection, not a bad charger, it just decides it's going to run the battery to past dead and then once you unplug and plug it back in - bam, oh hey you wanted to charge? yeah gimme a couple hours before you get anything on the screen.
Meanwhile rocking multiple HTC products (who also manufactured the Nexus 9) and have only once since 2013 had the experiences I've had multiple times with the 9 since 2016.
Plus if you suspect the battery is at fault, well, good luck finding one.

I agree with him!
But like you said Im one if the lucky ones.
The only major thing the N9 got wrong is the ram size.
2GB 64bit lol
ohh jeez. i just joing this forum cause i purchase one a few hours ago. on facebook ad for $60 could pass the deal for this tablet. so far is running great and looks brand new. but most u are talking long term. in a few week or a month. lets see how that goes. cause my nexus 7 2013 is also working rock solid.

Welcome!! :highfive:
I just bought a Nvidia shield tablet from eBay for $200. It was between the Nexus 9 and the shield tablet... Wish I had bought the shield a few weeks ago when Nvidia was still selling them. Or even a year ago.. its a two year old tablet and still the best.. They are really hard to find now, sold out on swappa and pulled from all storefronts. I checked eBay every few hours for a day and found one in pristine condition... It's still in the mail. All the rest of them on there are priced well over $200... It would have been the perfect tablet for her if you could find one. It's got front facing speakers, same cpu/gpu as the Nexus 9. Better build quality. Nearly stock Android. Sd card slot. Hdmi output to easily plug into tv. The shield K1 literally has it all, only beaten by the pixel c with the x1 cpu.. which is over priced and too big for my tastes, doesn't have a sd card slot and doesn't support adapters to HDMI.
Regardless I'd suggest the Pixel C, it's the best tablet if you don't mind it's price, size/weight and lack of sdcard slot as they only sell the 32gb varient now for $600. It's pure Android and will receive all the latest updates before any non pixel device. Or just take the gamble and get a Nexus 9... They are selling for 290 for the 32gb black varient atm which was tempting to me... But I've read nothing but troubles with that devices hardware that I've decided to stay away.
So far the tablet is wonderfull. Fast and good bild quality. Problems are only the backlight (im use to amoled gs8 plus). And the sound is good but i heard it was much better before the last few update which is the question i want to ask.
We probably wont get anymore update since it is official this table is not getting 7.1.2. Should i root? It says installing a new kernel fix the audio problem.
Other than that. Best $60 i have ever spend. Dont go spending $200. U can find it so low on craiglist, offerup, facebook ad. I had 3 guy say yes to $70. And this one i got was $60 but he was a few miles from my house.
just an update.
i unlocked bootloaded,
installed lineage os
elemental X kernel
root
underclock cpu to 2ghz
underclock gpu to 650mhz
using mini bowser instead of chrome
this tablet is amazing. fast. does not heat up, getting around 10 hour SOT. gaming even underclock perform incrediable. rigtide 2 runs at 60fps max resoultion. no hicup just like my ipad pro.
my only concern right now is not even the ram. is only having 4gb left storage. 16gb model is just not enough. 64gb would have been sweet.

Oh wow,
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Nexus 7 (2013)!!
If your mother doesn't mind a smaller 7" tablet, it's the perfect choice!
Same amount of RAM as N9, it's rock solid, still gets support in XDA (You could set it up for your mother, and check up on it once a month or something.)
I had a great N9, owned it for nearly 2 years...not one glitch.
Then it was stolen
Now my GF bought me a new one last xmas, and it just isn't the same...very slow and laggy.
So I can confirm what people have said, some units aren't up to standard.
