Nevermind. I just found out how to do so on www.androidrootz.com.. Would a stock MDK S4 be worth more than a Rooted ME7 S4? Anyone want my S4? I am going to iPhone again. This phone is too big, and no one has unlocked bootloader yet. Also, I cant stand the fact that the keypad on the phone dialer sits at the top of the menu while in a call [biggest pet peeve].

This guide doesnt seem to work for the i545 s4, & I cant find a way to unroot the me7 version I have...
Is there a way to atleast hid the custom unlock on boot icon at boot up? I can still return my phone and would like to see if I cant get the md7 version from those vzw buttheads

Its a verizon note 2 i used the toolkit method to root. If this has happend and been solved a point to the right thread would be great..... Ive seen people say to flash then wipe it and what not, really need a tutorial that abc's it since its my first time. I thought i had it when i used the toolkit to do the odin download + bootrecovery option but it says my phone is not in usb debugging mode and i cant boot into the os to turn it on.... Help please. Why are people wanting to go back to 4.1 from 4.3? I saw a vast improvement in my note's performance and can't see a reason as to what you would be loosing/gaining by traveling back.

OOOO
I see. So accepting a verizon OTA unroots your phone and makes it so you can't put a custom bootloader on it anymore. That sucks. But if you never took the actual OTA then you are good to go with a bootloader is what you are basically sating?

So I am new to the s4 and rooting. I really want to install the Hyperdrive ROM. I have been researching and researching what to do and I think i have found my answer for now and im not happy about it.
From what i gathered, since i installed the update and I am now on ME7, there is no root method bc they locked the phone down. Is this correct?

because of the bootloader will only allow signed packages to be installed on the phone and checks against older firmware and will not allow it. Unless you have the signed key you ain't flashing anything unless we find a workaround.

So why is there ROMs for the ME7 build if they can't be flashed?
This [email protected] sucks!
So, I'm stuck on ME7 as well (32GB S4, otherwise I'd just go down to the store and swap it, complaining about something -- seems they don't stock them at any local corporate stores).
I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and we have OMAP-Flash, which is like a low-level PROM flashing tool from the Samsung R&D team, and I could fix even a DEAD, or bricked phone with that. Is there something like that here to get back the original bootloader? I cant believe we're stuck on this crap... How 'bout a 2nd-init like my Droid-x days, or something slick like SafeStrap on the RAZR family?
...Just thinkin' "out loud".

Seems like we need someone to pick up the Dragonboard 8074 development kit to help us figure this out...even then, I'm sure Samsung has so many mods in there it'd be nuts to reverse engineer... Ugh, I'm so impatient! :silly:

You're not quite understanding what a rom is and is not. There is no such thing as a rom for ME7. There are roms that use the ME7 base. They are flashable only by those who have the MDK bootloader. When a build number is listed for a rom, it is the build that the rom is based from.

The ROM's that the devs based on MDK have been updated with the ME7 code just like any good developer does. But the bootloader those users have is still from their MDK (original) install. Once you go ME7 you can never go back, downgrade, crossgrade or get beyond the bootloader, for now anyways. Someone will find a way.

unlock Bootloader on Stock 4.3

I had updated my unlocked / root 4.1.2 to stock 4.3 the other day and of course lost root.. Now i see there is a OTA stock Root 4.3 MJ9 posted by Beans in the Developer section but needs an unlocked bootloader.
Is there a way to unlock the bootloader on stock 4.3 yet? Odin won’t let me put CWM recovery on - will fail, which I’m thinking is due to bootloader being locked.
I had used casual on 4.1.2 to unlock root and get custom recovery, but casual has not been updated yet for 4.3 from what i could find.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Never take OTA updates until you know what's in them, that is if Keeping root and being unlocked are important to you. Learn from others mistakes and or wait for Development to clear it.
that stinks I cant go back. I somehow did get my phone rooted, dont remember all that I did. so I am good now except...
Now the hotspot app I had wont work, gives the verizon subscription message. Ive looked for a way around this and I tried the app Wifi tether as a post had mentioned but that wont work, gives error when starting but error log is empty.
Do I need to flash a custom kernal possibly? or anyone know of a working fix?
Thanks

I now have the yellow triangle saying that Verizon has found unauthorized software on the phone. Trying to revert back to stock 4.3 and I've tripped my knox warranty counter! I think i'll stop tinkering for now.
Hal88 , you have to go to about under settings and keep tapping the build version bar to get the developer options unlocked

Wow good to know about bootloader locking up from OTA 4.3 gonna stick to my CM 4.4.2 rom
No way to unlock 4.3 bootloader?
So is 4.3 stock out of luck now with the bootloader? I was hoping to unlock my wife's phone and didn't realize 4.3 had updated onto her phone. Is there no way to unlock the bootloader now? Verzion wins?

[Q] How do I go from 4.4.2 stock (unrooted) to Cyanogenmod?

So I see so many threads about the difficulties about the S4 and whatnot, such as compatibility with Roms... However, I see no mention of Cyanogenmod anywhere. How would I go from stock 4.4.2 to CM?
I understand that Cyanogenmod has this page (can't post links... but I Googled "cyanogenmod galaxy s4 verizon" and chose link to Building CM for S4) but will that work with the 4.4.2?
If that is not what I am looking for, I understand they have nightly and stable builds here (Googled same as above, but chose the CM downloads page [1st one listed for me]).
Just want to make sure I don't brick/screw up my phone

If you can manage getting your phone rooted again you can use the app Tri Angle Away to get rid of that silly Custom screen that hangs at boot. I hate that screen!
That screen just means that your phone has found files that have been altered and no longer stock... So it pops up with that.
It's very annoying for us on MDK as it can sometimes make getting into recovery a pain.

I use WanamXposed to remove it, it's an option under "Security Hacks". You have to be rooted and install the Xposed Framework. I can say for a fact this does NOT trip the Knox counter, and works on JB(MJ7 & MK2) and KK(NC5) bootloaders.

Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask, but I just updated my Verizon GS4 to 5.0.1 using the OTA updates and I can boot into both the recovery and download modes. If i can boot into these what's stopping me from just flashing a new ROM in the download mode (it explicitly says this mode is used to install a custom OS) or applying an update from my external storage in the recovery mode?

You can go ahead and do that but you will probably brick your phone. Steps to flashing a custom OS is usually, root your phone and then unlocking the bootloader. After unlocking then you can install a custom recovery image. From the recovery you can flash custom OS and kernels. I believe the custom OS you are talking about is for an OS that is straight from Verizon. I wouldn't dare flash any ROM from Cyanogen, or Liquid or ASOP etc through the built in recovery of the phone. That's why you install a custom recovery from TWRP or Clockwork. It's your phone so you go ahead and do what you like, if it does work, well hell, let me know. Good luck.

Root
I tried to root after I installed lollipop OTA. Root checker said I wasn't rooted. It's then I found out I made a big mistake. After
a charge up the other night I turned my phone back on & noticed the lock symbol in the screen showed the unlocked lock.
Now my question is ....... is my phone unlocked , or is it just there is no bootloader that can gain access to the system?
All help with this is welcome!
Now that I think about it I realize what's happening. The phone unlocked the boot loader won't give me access to the system.
Boy it feels like I'm at the gate but can't get in.

Your bootloader isn't unlocked. There's not even a root method for this OC1 OTA. Samsung and Verizon have locked the bootloader permanently since 4.3 Jelly Bean. No bootloader has been unlocked since. None! There's a whole lot more technicalities to unlocking the bootloader than simply rooting. Chances are u may have tripped your KNOX counter, meaning your warranty is void. And it's irreversible.
So...VRUGOC1 OTA Update = NO CUSTOM ROM, RECOVERY, UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, ROOT, OR DOWNGRADE.

OK Let me backup. I guess I typed this improperly without thinking.
I realize that this is a very technical process to unlock phones . I also realize that there is not a method @ THIS TIME to gain root access to th S4.
Let me start over.
Before I received the OTA update I had tried Towel Root with no success. Then after I got th OTA I tried Odin without success. Now I did not know at the time time there wasn't an available method to root. Shortly after research I found out.
I have read root is not the problem but the is no way to unlock the bootloader. I just noticed the unlock symbol & had to question it.
I could give a damn if my warranty is void .I have 1 rooted phone. My be the other some time down the road ?

THERE IS NO CUSTOM RECOVERY FOR VERSION'S GALAXY S4 PERIOD
the only thing you can do is root and install safe-strap
then your options for roms are as follows
1: kitpop 1.3 <Which is the only ASOP Rom
2: or Hyperdrive Rls20
Those two are your ONLY Options
if you took the OTA you will be unable to downgrade to NC5 which is the only possible candidate for getting custom kernels to boot which hasn't happened yet
