[Q] Resolution on 4.2.2? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have SGP311 and just upgraded to 4.2.2 and i noticed a major drop in screen resolution, it is noticeable since the boot animation, all videos played from Movies, MxPlayer and so look crappy, the stock font also looks blurry. I was wondering if anyone has the same issue?

That's not good, I won't upgrade until this is responded too (not that i can update yet, I don't have OTA ....)
Can you do a screeny if you believe that it will be evident to see?

I would but it is not that evident, it came to my attention since the first boot after de XPERIA logo, the lines look extremely blurry in comparison with 4.1.2, I'm not that demanding in terms of screen res but i can notice it even with 1080p movies i used to play looking super crisp, also on Firefox and pdf's, I've been browsing threads but found no comments regarding this..I am looking for a downgrade but I'm a noob and dont want to brick this thing, I was hoping if someone could tell me if the right way to do it is via Flashtool + FTF file with full wipe??

I upgrade to 4.2.2 and do not have this everything is the same.... I find the scrolling on mine a lot better more fluid with the tip of the thumb..... only one thing so far but I will wait to make a battery drain and recharge to be sure but I find the battery is draining faster in sleep mode (stamina) I lost 4% leaving the tab doing nothing I thing it was better before. and also be able to root the device...... I like the new camera software in Superior auto .... Wifi also improved .....

I haven't experienced this, everything looks the same, and when doing a full screen application the top status bar disappears and the bottom bar icons turn into dots (less obvious), not 100% but I think the bottom navigation bar is not as tall as when it was a combined navi bar, if that's the case more screen real estate for full screen which may be causing your movies to not look as crisp as they need to fill in more room on the screen?
I'm not sure there is, but it may be a problem with assets (icons, stock wallpapers, etc.) if they're specifically optimised for the original bottom combined navi/status bar and now they're being stretched but any other content is just displayed within the boundaries of the bars without resizing or dpi change (just less being visible)

Just downgraded
I just downgraded to 4.1.2 and it is all back to normal, Im aware that it may sound like a thing of perception since the new notification bar was added an so but I swear its not, maybe its just my xtz..the only thing i miss is the speed of 4.2.2

Little lag in 2.3.4 KI1 and font change??

hola,
yesterday i updated via Kies to 2.3.4 and it seems to be very good - fixed the annoying data stalling issue which was a big one however i noticed that the phone lags a bit, its not that much but it does, and when opening texts, if it's a long conversation it's def slower than before.
i was running KF3 and now i have been updated to baseband "KI1" my CSC is XEU KH2..is there a quick lagfix or something i can flash?
finally, any way to put back the other fonts which were less bold if i wanted?
thanks
gabrio
Anyone abt this?

Did you try Settings -> Display -> Screen Display -> Font Style?
From all I know, I can change fonts on STOCK Samsung ROM 2.3.5, not sure about 2.3.4, but I get three font options (Default, Choco Cooky and Helvetica S)
Awesome changed that.. Like it.more.with helvetica
Thanks!!

Little Lag Clarification and Font
I will update my sgs2 to KI1 tonight, and tomorow I will test the issues i've had like the wifi-sharing (running out of control), battery life (in my opinion too short) and some heat while playing.
Just to know when are you experiencing lag, it is a delayed response to touch or it is like a graphical load?
About the font change I use Fontomiser app. With this one you can change the font to any font you like.

Well here is my feedback about it:
The good:
- battery life is good in my opinion, normal use no push gmail, some calls some txt some browsing display like 40%, I can do 2 days basically with phone in flight mode overnight and in a 8 hrs period consumes approx 5% overnight for me; on second day for dinner around 21 I would have like 15-20% or 25% depends.
- hard usage calls, text, apps installation, settings change, watching some clips, a hd movie lots of browsing and wifi at around 23 of day one I have like 20-23-25% left. I expect it to improve after some more charges as I have the phone just 2 weeks now.
- data stalling issue that was present with 2.3.3 kf for me, is now fixed
- fonts: there is a new default font in 2.3.4 that I dont really like tho if u go to settings > display > screen display > font style you can choose 3 fonts and I, really like the helvetica one, is super sharp love it! (maybe was there before, not sure)
minor probs:
- when screen goes off the dim animation is not smooth, which was ok before I think.
- I had a thread with lots of txt like 100 or more and when opening that the txt window slowed a bit in opening and did not appear smooth. I deleted that thread and on smaller threads is fine now.
- not 100% abt this... When you browse home screens its a little slower the sliding between sceeens.
However, this is small stuff, its not that the phone gets stuck on something.. Its pretty good and I think they fixed that wifi prob you were describing, I never tested that myself really.
Overall phone is great.. Its a bit off that they fix one thing and lil things go off but im sure they are doing their best.
People always complain esp with new devices, and yes is a bit frustrating but I think all will be good soon since so.many users with this phone so samsung must be bang on abt this one!
Feel free to share your feedback!

KI1 Feedback
Here is my feedback in some months of use.
The battery life looks the same.
The CPU use is higher at less requiring CPU processes and lower at high requiring CPU processes.
Temperature feels higher with simple tasks. I think them are demanding more CPU so it heats more.
It sure does lag on main screen after you exit some applications... its kinda annoying that the icons take a little longer to appear.
Overall: It's a good update because they fixed the (annoying battery drainer) wifi sharing.

Screen Resolution

So I have flashed to the latest International version of ICS and of course now have the option of either standard or high resolution. I use Pocket Informant and noticed that in standard resolution it comes up like a phone but in high resolution it comes up like it should for a tablet. When I was running the stock T Mobile build it always came up in tablet mode. Just what are the differences between the two other than the obvious. Also is anybody using Nova launcher? I used it on my phone while playing with ICS with no problems but with the tablet it won't let me place any widgets. It just tells me that their isn't enough room on the screen.
Kirby
Can't say much in the way of "other then the obvious" but yes, I saw that with several apps and launchers. In standard it reacts more like a phone. Some apps I couldn't even install because the resolution wasn't supported. When I switch to high everything worked as expected, as on a tablet. Those apps I couldn't install before then installed just fine.
After switching I noticed a definitely change in speed, but either I've gotten used to it or it corrected itself after a bit.
So I take it that you are runniing in high res mode all of the time?

Yeah. Like it much better. Icons and thinks look a little blurry in standard. I just took two screen shots between the two, same launcher and background setup. Standard indeed just looks like a smaller screen scaled up... and blurred.
I like high but with apps that are not tablet specific you can run into the issue of teeny tiny text being difficult to read.
How do I turn on hi res mode?

There should be a zoom mode icon near the clock on the status bar that allows you to zoom the the app to full screen.
Also have you checked under Settings --> Display --> Font Sise and set it to Large or Huge?

(Ray) 4.1.B.1.13 Released!!! + Download link (Latest 4.0.4)

Hey. It seems like the "new" 4.0.4 (4.1.B.1.13) is available through Vodafone. I've just updated my phone and here are my thoughts.
1. The notification led problem hasn't been fixed.
2. There's no new kernel.
3. It's a bit smoother than .587. (Actually it's not. Just placebo.)
4. The touchpad responds better. (Placebo)
5. The dialer is much faster.
EDIT:
6. I'm disappointed in Sony. I've waited so long for this update and it's a pile of t****, slow and buggy. If you're still on GB, stick with it, don't "update"!
EDIT:
7. Sony, are you playing us? Video recording still laggy, audio output is still mono.
EDIT: According to CTCaer the only real change is related to WiFi libraries. There's also a new baseband which might also solve some signal issues. That's all folks! Don't expect better overall performance.
Download: http://d-h.st/WcP
Note. Vodafone branded. Contains carrier bloatware.
Some screens and Benchmarks.
still same pathetic mixed ui
What other changes? more screenshots please)) there is a problem with the network mode?
i'm still curious about what did they update actually. kernel is still the same exact kernel as .587, bit by bit.
if notification led and buggy video record with stabilizer on haven't been fixed, what is the change then?
btw i can see the baseband is .85 now.

Total waste of time. Going back to my sweet ginger because this update is a total fail. Also, this is totally my last Sony phone.
Whether switching of a mode of a network (2G/3G) after reboot is corrected?

Did they fix network mode resetting?
Did they changed, added, removed any widgets?
Is there still double "Fun & Downloads" widget?
Does "media shortcuts" widget still takes 4x2 grid instead 4x1 which is proper?
Is WiFi coverage still as weak as before?
Is app drawer still laggy as before?
Is overall experience still cluttered and choppy as before?
Is gaming still "mission impossible" as before?
I guess it will take some time to answer all this, but we're not rushing anywhere. Take your time.
this is like they mock us -.-
they releasing new firmware with no noticable changes

5,6,7) It's still full of lag. Homescreen switching is slow and choppy, the app drawer is the same. Video recording laggy and mono sounded. Gaming is laggy, for example, Temple Run lags, same as on .587
As for the rest, I can't tell for sure. Once I saw how bad it runs, I switched back to GB.
What's the change except numbers then?
thank god this is xda, custom rom and kernel beat the hell out of oem stock rom.
but at least they tried.
well try again next time, sony. try harder
sony just change number >>>

Like I said before on several occations, Gingerbread is light year ahead of this half-finished ICS wannabe.
In everything - period.
Beside fanciness and somewhat wider choice of apps, which will appeal to "up to date" type of users.
But everything (important) else is on side of GB really. Usability, performance, rock solidness, stability, gaming, etc etc...
As for me, I'm sick of waiting for something to happen, and then being slapped in face harder than before, over and over again.
I was using (torturing myself) ICS in last few weeks just for trying to make myself to like it, and hoping that new update will make it usable finally, but now...
I'm going back to GB for good, at least with this phone. This ICS experience made me appreciate GB even more than before. So, dear fast and usable GB, here I come. I'm sorry I ever left you.

[Q] Screen Stuttering

I was on the stock rooted rom for the last 3.16 RUU and I started having a screen stuttering appear when I change homescreens and when I'm in the app drawer the icons appear to move and the text appears to be a split second behind it and then they snap into place. I re-flashed the phone with one of the stock rooted roms based off of the latest OTA. I also updated the firmware and I'm S-OFF via DirtyRacun.
EDIT: Actually, it looks like it's having trouble refreshing or drawing the icons in the app drawer as they are fuzzy (like lines missing in the icons or a monitor refreshing) for a second and then come into focus.
First, does anyone have any idea why I would have this issue? If I reboot it goes away and works perfect, but after a little bit, it comes back. I checked the RAM and CPU and they seem fine with plenty of room left.
Second, could anyone recommend a solid ROM that is pretty much stock? I don't mind a few tweaks and such, I just want something really solid. Any good recommendations would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
Can anyone help me out with some advice? Any ideas of what could be causing this or a ROM I should try to see if it fixes the problem?

Activate the video optimizer!!!

You can activate it with the nova launcher activities, the path is settings / optimizer video. As standard it does not appear in the Samsung soft, also once you have achieved the shortcut you must activate it. All multimedia apps appear, Netflix, HBO, Amazon prime video, Mx player, Samsung video and some more like Youtube, Vanced etc. The improvement is remarkable, now it is seen with very rich colors, more contrast and brightness, It also corrects the excess of overexposed images that in my opinion detracted from the screen, now it is incredible to watch series and movies! For those of you who don't use nova launcher, I suppose that with an app like create shortcurts from the playstore it will also be possible to get it. Yeahhhhhh !!!!!
Thanks for this.
The name for this toggle is: hdreffectsettingsactivity
After using it takes you to your system settings with an on/off toggle. For unknown reason Samsung removed it from device settings, so we have to fiddle with 3rd party tools to reenable it. Please fix Samsung.
For whats its worth i think Mx player has this enabled by default everytime you watch hdr 10bit encoded video. Not 100% correct but when watching with mx player that nice and sharp image is still there.
Got the latest nova launcher(7)... don't see anything like this under settings, any thoughts, thanks

Thanks I found it though I don't see much of a difference. Now if I Uninstall nova does this option stick or does nova need to be running, thanks again

Once you activate it you can delete nova launcher if you want, it will be fixed or it should. I do notice a clear improvement, the screen has more contrast and the colors are much more intense with the naked eye. Now we see 100% of what our amoled can give. If you do not perceive a change it is strange. My tablet is still on android 9 ... yours on android 10? Maybe that's the reason!
I'm on 10 but yes you're right I do see some improvement, it doesn't effect all apps only a few. Thanks again for the tip.
Thanks, a real improvement !

Me too. Nova and Action launcher does not show me the option. Running Lineage 18.1 Android 11.
I enabled it and tested it. It works by crancing up your screen brightness up a really really lot.
You should worry about screen burn in since the tablet is oled.
Hence I disabled it again.
If you open for example youtube app with this enabled the only thing it seems to do is putting whole screen including comment section into maximum brightness.
I understand Samsung why they don't give this option available to customers not understanding oled burn in.
I recommend you to disable it. In the future you might think back if you got burnin oled display.

Excuse me, but I must be very clear, you don't know what you're talking about. The video optimizer in our Tab S 5e is hidden in the software because Samsung did it thinking of offering us a worse screen and thus favor the Amoled Tab S 7+. Listening to you is stepping on eggs in a chicken coop xD. Activate the optimizer and enjoy the excellent amoled and calm screen, you will not get burned by using the optimizer (all the tabs have it, their phones also) By the way, my Tab S 8.4 from 2014 still has the screen in perfect condition review using high brightness as I like to watch series or movies ...
I found this option while running Android 10 but now since the 11 update, I can't find this option in action launcher or nova launcher... what am I missing? Thanks

I'm on stock android 11.
Stock Android 11 here, I found the "hdreffectsettingsactivity" using this Nova Launcher method. Problem is that there isn't any buttons to toggle or options to select. It just displays a sentence about using Normal Screen brightness or something. Is this a dead end for Android 11? I could care less about 11. I was watching a series on Netflix with a lot of night/dark scenes and those scenes were straight up unwatchable.
(for anyone looking for this, it wasn't under "Optimizer Video," it was further down listed as one of the "Settings," read the fine print.)

Can you try YouTube app, search at YouTube for:
Real 4K HDR Dolby Test ultrahd movie for 4k
oled tv
Then when it starts playing go full screen. Does HDR automatically turn on?
It does on my galaxy s8 but only in full screen. The user interface is very bright too but when leaving full screen video in YouTube automatically disables again.
If it works than other applications can do the same.
I want to disable HDR since I didabled video optimizer, I still can't block YouTube going HDR in HDR movies.
So actually we have the opposite problem.
In your current situation normal video is not HDR.

So android 11 is rubbish because you can't use the video optimizer and Netflix looks so bad? Have you managed to find a solution?
