[Q] Root file for Samsung Galaxy SII GT I9100 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I'm seeking for a good root file to apply on my device (Galaxy SII GT I9100). I already have a 4.1.2 jelly bean installed on device.
Anyone knows where can I get it? I've seen many sources on goolgle, but I don't know which source is safest to download the file.
Can you guys help me with that, please? I appreciate it!
Thanks a lot!

What do you mean with 'root file'? If you search for guides, for example here on xda, you can just follow the steps.
Please don't ask for the best way to root your phone or something like that...

I just want to root my phone. I am looking for a "kernel zip file" to flash it into to my phone and get the phone rooted.
Do you know where can I get this "zip file"?
Thanks!

To flash via Odin? Or CWM / TWRP?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

You can flash a custom kernel with Odin (or even find other methods). If you search and read a bit, I think it shouldn't be that hard to figure out which ones and where you can find them. No offence, but this has been covered for so many times by now, so the answers are already out here.
To the person above me: I think his phone isn't rooted yet

I didn't say anything about asking questions where you downloaded the kernels.
I said to read the directions provided in the thread where you got the kernels from.
Don't mean to offend, but If you can't follow the threads, then your not ready to root your phone yet,"you will more likely brick it". READ and then READ again..
Dont run before you can walk.
Also, MAKE SURE you are trying to use kernels (and/or firmwares when you move onto firmwares) meant for your phone. If you got these kernels from a thread in the I9100 forums, make SURE you have an I9100 by looking on the label under your device's battery.
I have seen a ton of people flash kernels and firmwares/ROMs intended for a different device, and the results have varied from the device not functioning quite right, to an outright brick that had to get sent back to Samsung.
The easiest way to root your s2 is zegrush exploit, works for me no problem

and you dont have to use odin so flash counter doesnt increase

I was confused too before rooting but you learn quick and understand after you do it. I dont know much myself but I dont think you need to download any kernels to root, at least I didnt. just use the link in my post above and it will be easy, yes it is scary the first time!!!

Pretty much every kernels here dont require you to unzip them, you flash them as they are. As everyone above says, read the instructions. I also know a lot of computers, but sadly pretty much no knowledge of that is useful for phones, unless you know programming.

What thread are you getting the file from, and reading? Cause it REALLY seems you are not following the instructions correctly. The zImage file IS the kernel, but it has to be in a .tar file to flash in Odin. So it sounds as if you've unzipped it twice instead of just once, maybe.

I just TOLD you what you were doing wrong. I'm starting to think you really have no business doing this yourself.
If you end up with a zImage file, you unzipped it one too many times. Put the file that CONTAINS the zImage file into Odin.

First thing search for cf-root for your device. On the cf-root page you will understand how to identify the correct file for you. Download the file. Use odin following details about how to use it. Get your phone in download state. Volume down+power button+home button. Odin will detect your phone. After cf-root its time to install a custom rom. I use slimics look at the forum for it and the way to install it on your phone. I hope this helped you.

[Q] What root to use with 4.0.3 and what will work with my verson?

Hi,
Im new to the rooting, and i have been searching google, youtube, this forum and probably everywhere to find answers to my questions, but im having a hard time to find out what will work with my verson. I have found ALOT of "how to" guides on root, but i feel they all go to quick and say install this and this and do that.. But im sitting and wondering WHAT is all this files, what do they do, and is this the correct way for my verson?
Im very confused
Info on my SGS2:
Android-verson: 4.0.3
Baseband verson: I9100XXLPQ
Kernalverson: 3.0.15-I9100XXLPQ-CL223505
What im interested to try is put a clean verson if ICS on my phone.
I also tried to follow a guide i found on galaxy2root for the ICS, but after unzipped the kernal file, i should have a .tar file but i just get a zImage.file. This will not open in Odin 1.85.
I had an iphone 4 that i got "jailbroken" and got that to work very good. So i can do things like this, but i really like to know what im doing before i start.
I hope i dont get fried for probably asking this for the 100000000 time, but as i said, i tried to search everywhere, but im just so confused, so if anyone could point me in the correct direction i would be very happy.

Hi again,
I got the phone rooted, and working fine.
But having some problems with installing the custom rom.
I follow the guide, and do everything it says, after its finish installing (that takes ca one minute, and it should take more then five?) it says everything is good. And i restart, get the yello triangle and the screen goes black, now its supposed to boot, but it stays black.
Cant understand what i did wrong
I got the phone restored, so it works now but i really want to try the pure ics rom

That makes no sense at all who knows what stupid instructions you have been given .
Flash a rom from XDA and follow the instructions posted on XDA .

my friend you wont get support for such ROMs which are not from XDA..
there are plenty of ROM on XDA developers site : http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1204

How can i know thats a different "place" ?

I understand that it anoying when people like me come here and ask questions thats been asked before, im active in a bmw forum and know all about stupid questions, but you guys are the experts at this, im not.
I was not sure if i wanted to ask on xda at all, after seeing the video. It made it sound like its not legal to come here and ask stupid questions.
But, thanks for the info, i will check the roms on xda.

Maybe you guys can answer a question, i have now installed a rom from the XDA forum, and its called F1-Galaxy Nexus (i think), its a clean ICS rom.
But im missing the Notes and the file manager, and i think there are som other apps thats missing to. The description said this should be exactly like the Nexus, but i would think the Nexus also have the Notes app?
Other than that, it works great!

What notes that comes with Android? There isn't one.
If you mean the notes app which comes with Samsung ROMs, you need to have a read what AOSP is.
Oh, so the Notes is something that Samsung put on there? If so, then i understand why its not there. Thanks!

Sgs2 ics 4.0.4 help!!

Hey,
So I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 to ICS 4.0.4 before 1-2 months. The new graphics and extra features looked really great at first, but 2 hours after using it on normal applications (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter.) It froze and did nothing, like literally just freezes at the screen it lagged on. This has been happening continuously for the past 2 months and I'm really sick of it, I upgraded my phone and my dad's one (both SGS2I9100) using Samsung Kies, ever since that, it just keeps freezing like 4 times a day and I have to take off my battery and re-put it so it can reset since nothing will do this.. The old the firmware I had was the really amazingly going well and never lagged even once (I can't remember which firmware though). I'm a total noob, I didn't and don't have my phone rooted or some stuff like that, expect downloading APKs off the internet lol.
I really want someone to help me in this, I know there must be a solution since I don't think I'm the only one who has been annoyed by this, specially when it happens on a daily routine. I searched over the forums and found nothing. I know there must be something talking about the issue but I'm too nooby to understand the article titles which might be a solution of my problem.
Please help me in my problem it really bothers me and xda is my last hope...
Thank you all.
Note: please use simple terms because I really won't understand, and if you do, please teach me them lol.
Well, first of all your up for some reading.
While you go from thread to thread you'll run into the world of ROMs and flashing.
The first thing you have to know is that your device comes with 4 things:
1) Hardware (dah)
2) Kernel (link between Hardware & OS)
3) ROM (OS)
4) Modem (Baseband for your country / Region)
You are actually on 4.0.4, It's Kernel is known to suffer the brick bug issue.
Flashing is used to get the best from your device, in relation to your personal user experience. You got plenty of options like Stock Roms and Custom Roms, as well as Stock Kernels and custom kernels.
When flashing stock roms you get the chance to get rid of your carrier stuff (bloatware and animation boot) by getting an unbranded ROM (samsung official stock rom), you can either go down to previous versions (Gingerbread, ICS 4.0.3) or even go up (Jelly bean leaked ROM). Carrier branded or not, it's just a matter of choice.
When flashing custom roms you get a whole lot of roms to choose from. The most common are CyanogenMod (CM), RR (revolution remix), Omega and etcetera. These roms take the best of the stock roms and leave the worst, so you'll get a more personalized experience.
When Flashing custom kernels your trying to get the best performance for your ROM, this means you can use a stock ROM with a custom kernel.
Modems are basebands that let your carrier network function in your region / country, so if you flash a modem, your network might not work, so you'll have to flash another modem and so on.
Check all that out and if you decide to go on flashing, we are here to help you on the easiest / safest way to do it.
rembember to read and re-read all first.
you did notice this is now your official post right?
Okay I kinda get it, can you kindly please send me links that will help my problem? I'd rather downgrade with Stock ROM than a costum one.
Another thing, will it affect anything that has to do with my Carier? and does my phone have to be rooted in order this to work? If so how can I?
Many thanks.

I'd personally advice you to get 4.0.3 stock ROM. What's you carrier? I could look it up for you while you learn about flashing/downgrade.

I need you you to tell me how do it too please

When the guy doesn't read it was a good advice to start doing it, because it's not really allowed to ask everything that is allready asked so many times.
When he actually does read, but doesn't understand (which I don't think because he's asking basic question about steps he must take) then it's maybe better to rethink if he's really going to flash something because he doesn't know what he's doing

Why don't you just flash a stock rom through Odin? No offence but I'm serious, the lack of knowledge you show here by asking about Recovery to me seems to be a sign you shouldn't root it at all, and learn a whole lot more about flashing and more if you want to.

[Q] .:New Method to root Andoid:.

Hello,
I am currently using the Samsung Galaxy SIII GT-I9300. Bought this device last April. At that time I was completely new to rooting device. I didn't know what to do. I searched online about rooting device, read many post by users in various blogs and threads here in XDA. Then I was very curious to root my device. But even then, though i knew what rooting was and its merits and demerits, i had no idea how to root my device. So I started searching again for an easy and fast way to root my device. Then I came me across the framaroot thread here and thanks to the developer of Framaroot, I was able to root my android safely without any problems. It was a very useful app for beginners who had no idea about rooting.
After few months, I received a firmware update. I had no idea what changes it would bring about in my device. In a hope to find out the new features, I updated the firmware. But sadly, there wasn't any noticeable change. So once again I seeked the help of framaroot to root my device. I was left with an error message and didn't know what to do. Again by searching on Google, I came to know about the OTA update about which I had no idea prior to the firmware update. I realized that the OTA update was a curse to Android rooting and I was left with my boring stock rom without anything. Today again I searched all over the Internet for a very safe and easy method to root my device but couldn't find anything like the framaroot. So here I am kindly requesting, the deveopers to kindly update the already existing methodsor make a new easy method to root android devices so that people new to android can experiment and enjoy root features. Sorry for the long story, thought it might be useful by explaining everything in detail. Hope I have not violated any of the XDA rules. If I did, I apologise for that too but please don't remove this thread. It would be very nice if anyone can find a solution as there are many people in the same situation as I am right now.
Thanking XDA and all the developers for there services.

Thanks for the post. Nevers seen this before. I will surely try it out. I have heard about odin before but was not confident to use it as I thought it may brick my device. Is there any root apps like Framaroot that can help make the process a lot faster and easier without the use of a computer.

1- Its the fastest and most reliable method I femilliar with- just follow the vid orders step by step (according to your device model), and no harm
should be made (unless you plug out your device in the middle of the process, or using a different model type- but even those can be resolved).
2- No apps that I know. Although i would not recommend it even if I found one- just seems too riksy than using the computer...
Basically all the OP questions are answered in the faqs and guides .
Root is constantly updated as and when possible but its not a simple question of just making a new one . Read the relevant root threads .

If it was only that easy on S3 would save a lot of trouble ..yep follow instructions in thread and use PhilZ .tar.md5 not the zip file and if you are flashing CM 11 you do not need to root the rom is already rooted.

Okieee bro
But... again....what is the difference between flashing in odin and recovery? So for any future process I can avoid all these doubts.
Searched online. Couldn't find anything that tells the difference.

Without giving you a long explanation you flash custom roms in recovery (.zip files) and stock roms (.tar) in odin and same for recoveries.

Ow ok ok...thats explains a bit
Thanks.
Something is tempting me to try it out. Lol. If it works, i will report it here and it will help other s3 users too. At the same time, something prevents me from doing it. I get a feeling of bricking my device. Then I will have to fix that too
Before I do something like that, can u predict if it may work since the same method worked for the N7000 or can u tell me if have you tried it before? (Please tell me if I am annoying u, it doesn't matter )
