[Q] Getting the Xperia Z Ultra since no HTC One Max anytime soon - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

much to my chagrin, the HTC One Max will not be released anytime soon (prior to October). i desperately want a new device and i've decided to get the XZU.
i'm currently on StraightTalk/AT&T and from what i've read, there is no current version of the XZU that will provide 4G, but HSPA+ is attainable.
i stream a great deal of music to my phone, surf the net a lot, a few movies here and there and talk on the phone for less that 200 minutes a month.
- for those of you here in the US, and particularly those on StraightTalk, is there a problem when trying to stream content to your device?
- which model are you using?
- where should i purchase this device from to avoid the dreaded blank screen problem.
- and do you recommend I wait for the 4g variant, instead?
any additional feedback would be most appreciated, as well.

I am in the exact same situation. I am currently on ATT and in need of a new phone. Was really looking forwards to the HTC Max, but the Xperia Z Ultra just seems better. My questions are the same. Would love an educated response. Thanks in advance.

Was really charmed to hear HTC was making a "phablet", but unfortunately a 5..9" can't replace a tablet, I would still need to play around with my N7 and bring both of them. I hope one day I can have a HTC phone again, but seems that since the Sensation XE they never developed something that was matching my needs :crying:
Build quality, design and HTC UI are top notch and devs are at its level. Between a NG3 and One Max no hesitation go Max, but XZU and Max are really different in size.

The extra half an inch on the ZU is great, ask my wife!!

To be very honest I have the Xperia Z , the S4 The Htc one , optimus G pro ( NO I DONT own a mobile shot )
I have not been so pleased with any of the above than the ZU , the best smartphone out there , yes you will miss the IR blaster and flash on this but considering the general daily usage this phone just is the best , 0 viewing angles , its far better than the S4 and the G pro with color reproduction I am so happy sony finally sorted this out... with the Z1 the videos I saw looks like it lacks still the calibration as it still uses the same screen as ZU but has some viewing angles problem must be because of calibration though. but withe slimness of the phone and the amazing battery life and performance multitasking becomes an easy task.
This is defntely recomended above Note 3 simple reason the Note 3 has tooooooo many software gimicks which in the end you wont use at the same time no one to sit and teach you all those and you would nt have time either or all those features hog battery and to save battery you will end up turning them off...

That's good to hear. Is it safe to assume that waiting until the 13th for the LTE varient is a better idea? Or is getting the 6802 with only HSPA+ not really a noticeable difference?

6802 is good enough for me... Sure the extra mbps are nice but doesn't justify spending more money.. Plus I get good HSPA+ area so I'm getting around 10-14mbps..

How much extra is it really going to be? My area is great for HSPA+, but if i eventually want to sell it I feel like people won't want to buy the 6802.

the device will come factory unlocked so you would't have to do anything to unlock it...
all you would have to do is enter the apn settings...presumably the settings in your current device should work...

Hi Don't make the mistake my Mother made, when she and bought the Xperia Z Ultra instead of waiting for the Note 3 like I told her. It turns to be a big mistake, she can not swap out battery, the battery life is so short, there is not stylus built in, she constant have to remember to carry some pencil, there is no wacom technology, she can not sketch nature like she can with the Note 3, she can not put the Ultra in her pants and walk or sit down with it, it is so impractical. There is no flashlight like, so she can not use the phone as a torch, which is vital for at night time, she fell yesterday because of the lack of flashlight and nearly killed herself. Also the camera is only 8M. Also there is no IR blaster, so she can't not use the phone as a remote control for her TV, she have to use the original TV controller, which is inconvenient because she have to turn no the light to see the keys on the TV remote controller, which means she have to get up and turn on the light, which is bad for her because she's got backache. Also she like to watch horror movies, the LCD on the Ultra can not display true black like the Amoled.

It just your mom don't like it. That's all.

I was going to wait and get the LTE version but then I did speed tests of my HSPA+ model and still got 15-20mbps frequently

I was getting 19 mbps yesterday which is quite good, sure it is not LTE speeds I was getting around 50 mbps on my galaxy s4 when I had it but I can live with the slower speeds I ended picking up a used c6802 for a very good price less then half of what I can order the LTE model for and I am very happy with it especially after updating to the 510 firmware the battery life is much much better

These threads amuse me. Here's 5 phones, pick one. And asking in the SGS2 section no less. That's like asking a bunch of Mac owners if they should buy a Mac or a PC.
Clearly you're open to a new carrier because you're choosing between 5 phones. If you had to stay with a specific carrier, that already cuts your choices down to 2 or 3 since the SGS2 and Sony handsets don't support the same 3G bands as the HTCs. Your country will factor in as well since launch availability, pricing, and local carrier discounts will incentivize some phones over others.
Those are just some of the considerations that don't even have anything to do with the phones themselves. Of those 5 choices, how many here have had 20 minutes hands-on with more than 2 of them? I haven't. Most of the opinions here will likely come from hours of aggregating editorial reviews. While those are valuable in their own way, asking a forum pales in comparison to doing that research on your own. Also, you can bet that almost no one here has played with a Sensation yet.
OP, I don't mean to be a douche but nobody here will offer a more meaningful opinion than one you could come up with on your own.

If you want a future proof phone say atleast for a year or two..
then the SGS 2 and Sensation are your best bet..
SGS2- you will be able to root and make sure you have the latest software thansk to XDA
Sensation - will not be able to root yet (locked bootloader) until some brilliant XDA members manages to crack it
I am considering the Sensation as I feel I hopefully wouldn't need to root it for atleast a year or two by which time somebody might have cracked its boot loader
The milestone has been out almost 2 years and the bootloader is still not cracked

I can get a high end phone price isnt a issue just need a phone which can last for a year or two, should be durable i am not a fan of rooting devices so i dont really need that until it is necessary to meet the techonolgy in shape of updates.
Sony phones look like toys with good feature, HTC looks solid, i have Samsung Wave at the moment though it has great features but the Bada OS which is not cracked yet, so i want to try Android now.
So far by reading reviews, user comments, watching videos i have found SGSII best but on the other hand there are people complaining about battery, sound, lag, reboots etc etc which is really confusing.
Note: I am from Pakistan so contract thing doesnt work here, i will get a Sim Free phone by paying full price of it thats why it is really necessary to do a research and ask for guidance.
How about the Google Nexus S (made by Samsung).
Always reqcieved the latest Android updates straight from Google.
Very stable.
NFC reader.
Many Custom ROMs.
Identical hardware to the Samsugn Galaxy S i9000 (4" AMOLED i9020, or sLCD i9023)
The phone feels like a phone in your hands.
No lag unlike the Samsung i9000.
About 350 Euros last time I checked.
handtec.co.uk post internationally.
Sadly, no microSD card, no FM Radio. Lacks some hardware enabled codecs for video, but still plays most and can play other formats using software decoding.
The hardware of Nexus S isnt outdated ? I guess most of the future applications will support dualcore phones.
Have mine for two days now and I must say this one of the best phones I got my hands on.
Battery life is amazing. Camera it's amazing.samsung's email client and screen is fantastic.
And 1.2ghz dual prossessor is so so fast.. Can't even compare to htc vision oc 1.8ghz cm7.

We get it, your battery life sucks. Take a look at your apps, because the majority of users say the battery life is great. I've done no tweaking except freezing a few hubs, everything still syncs in the background and I'm sitting on 92% now, unplugged at 7am this morning. (It's now 2:20pm here.)
I just got my sgs2, my previous phone was a desire but I miss htc sense already. But I am hoping someone will port sense to the sgs2 soon there already is a mostly working port for the sgs1

[Q] Cheap 2nd hand Android phone with great ROM support

I'm looking for a secondary phone primarily so that I can use it for playing around with custom Android ROMs. This means the phone must be cheap since I'm not super rich and can't spend lots of money on a secondary "toy phone". It also has to be supported by a bunch of ROMS, so that there is something to play with I don't really have an overview of the ROM world and that's why I'm asking for help here.
That's pretty much the only requirements that I have it definitely doesn't have to be a new nor well speced phone. Since the availability of second hand phones where I live obviously will vary I'd like as many suggestions as possible.
Thanks in advance!

Well, your only after a phone to mess around with right? so I don't think speed should be your main concern. Its decent, not terribly as slow as you'd think. The resolution is a killer. The screen is very vibrant, especially if you manage to pick up a AMOLED version. My brother has one of these, and he recommends it. Its got decent dev support too!

You're right. And I BOUGHT IT! I got it second hand for what would have been 82$ (converted from my local currency). For a Wildfire S or a Legend I would've had to pay around 120$. They are similarly speced except the Blade has a much better screen that is larger and with significantly higher resolution plus I got the AMOLED version For a Desire or a Nexus One i would have had to pay around 160$.
So all in all I think I made a very good purchase and thanks a lot for drawing my attention to this neat phone which should soon land in my mailbox! It will be a nice companion for my Xperia S which I have no intention of flashing.
Also having a ZTE phone is totally hipster! Now one in my country knows that brand.

GSG 3 users. Is it still worth buying?

Hey guys, i've recently owned an HTC One x, and i've found it to be okay, if there's one thing i liked about it over the SGS 3 it would be only the screen (or maybe not). (ATM phone is dead, screen broke, not willing to give htc 300$ just to replace the screen. They wanted 294 euros, that
Either way, what good is a screen if the overall package doesn't do the job, right?
I was originally planning to get a Nexus 4, but for some reason i have the other side of me telling em to go for the GSG 3, incredibly fast updates (as they've proven). One factor i noticed that the SGS 3 has over the Nexus 4 is battery life. I think it easily gets 1 and a half to 2 hours more screen on time if i compare both battery stats thread.(hugely favoring me in for the sgs 3)
I'm just clueless as to what I should do. The nexus 4 is not highly available atm (screw you LG) , this is another reason i don't see why i should wait.
The SGS 4 is around the corner (?)
I'm just not sure what next move i should make now? The reason i'm very desperate at the moment is because my one x is not functional at all. My SGS1 is wrecked badly (charging hardly works anymore, and i just can't take it without a decent phone >_>)
Would you guys still recommend i buy a brand new SGS 3 @ 470 Euros right now? Any reason not to? I know such threads are not very welcome to a select bunch. But regardless, i'd really appreciate some input.
Worth noting is that i don't really game on phones, if at all.

If your extremely stuck buy the s3 but if your not id wait because god only knows what around the corner. Htc have a few nice phhones coming out and already out aswell as that the xperia z which will be out very soon is going to beat any phone that comes out this half of the year.
Sent from my GT-I9300
If you want to use the phone as it is, it's fine buying SGS3. the stock ROM is Okay with some great features. There are many great custom kernels (Perseus, Siyah, etc.) for you to choose. The phone is ok if you don't look at the specs, battery life is good, no warm(hot) issue, play almost any games well, support most video hardware acceleration codecs and great camera.
You should consider Xperia T if you want AOSP-like(CM) experiences. As it's a great device for devs and rapidly getting more and more sick developers (codeworkx for example). You may wait another month for an Xperia Z also.
Looks to me as though many are going to be recommending I wait. If that's the case i guess i will hold out. It would be much easier if my phone didn't suck. If it dies out on me i guess i'll just buy a cheap nokia for the time being and call it a day until i get my hands on something newer.
Never was worth buying and never will be. Get yourself a 16GB Nexus 4, instead.

Theres 2 thing with waiting
1 Theres always going to be something round the corner, so you can always waiting so you can end up chasing the latest greatest phone to be. I'm looking for a phone myself, but if I'm going to wait, I'd have to draw a line somewhere.
2 The price of what those phones will be, for example the price of the sony xperia is currently rumoured to be £520 sim free for the UK, whilst it's more than likely going to change, it may still be too expensive for some, depending if someones getting it on contract or what ever.
Least with any phone out, people know what the (most of the) pro's and con's and how much it's going to cost.

That is a nice looking phone, what I really don't understand about people is they complain at phone screens breaking, then a few days later the next in thing is making a phone out of glass, which is what breaks in the first place, it boggles the mind.
I own one and I wouldn't buy another one if this one failed.
It's nice and all, but it's not that great.

How do you guys like the HTC ONE max so far?

Im coming off of contract soon, and thinking about getting the ONE max. I was wondering how you guys feel about it after owing it for sometime? Im coming from a Verizon Moto X dev. Edition, how much of a shock ( if any ) will I be in with the One max?
Thanks.
I have a note 2 that was incredible. Ran a debloated Rom and got good battery life and excellent stability. Didn't think I would ever part with it. I saw a local craigslist ad for someone that had a factory unlocked for an incredible price so I picked it up. So far it is ok. I like the front facing speakers. Sense takes a bit to get used to. It's pretty smooth and responsive. I rooted and installed custom recovery. Still on stock factory but began debloating myself and it's smooth. There aren't many available Roms but the couple there are seem that they could have potential. I will get around to installing them and making a judgement. Good luck.

Yeah I'm a phone person who swaps phones every few months and sometimes even weeks. So having experience with phones such as the Note 3, G2 and other Android devices, the HTC One Max is right up there with them. The only downfall I can say is the camera. It isn't horrible but I'm not a fan of the Ultra pixels. Other than that I am rooted and running a custom rom and recovery and have Cleanrom installed. Battery is a beast and very responsive.

I bought my One Max with one main objective: Combine the uses I have for my Acer Iconia 10" tablet and HTC Droid Incredible 2 smartphone into one device.
I watch a lot of movies, read a lot of ebooks, and of course talk, text, email. The screen on the one max while a lot smaller than the one on my Icoina is very sharp and clear and being able to play 1080p movies more than makes up for the smaller screen size. For reading ebooks, I just up the font size some and I am still good to go.
Having a screen that is about 2 inches larger than the Incredible 2 makes texting / email, easier, and the google voice talk to text works very well.
The battery life on this thing is incredible. My day starts at 10:30pm and I go to bed around 3:30pm so with 17 hours of the above listed use (and yes I normally watch at least one movie a day) I still have around 28% battery life left when I put it back on the charger.
If I had one gripe, it would be as memtioned earlier, the camera, but then again, this is not a $1200 SLR digital camera. The camera takes decent enough shots, but if you are looking for a good camera that also happens to make phone calls, is able to send / receive text and emails, and can connect to the internet, you may want to look elsewhere, but for the normal photos most of us make, it does not do a bad job of it.
All in all, for me at least, it was a great decision to get a one max and it has met all the goals/expectations I have had for it.
Thanks guys.
I came from using a htc one and a Xperia z ultra. I do miss the Xperia z ultra do wish I held out and got the Xperia z2 though. Its a great phone. Speakers are the best on a current phone. Only things I don't like is the non tablet options. Say being able to view home screen horizontally. Etc. Bit again I am someone who regularly changes phones

I am an advantage club member and got run through the ringer with the g2 I bought. Sprint has agreed to swap out under the 14 day return for any device including the M8 but I will have to wait for it to be available to us
Do I get the one max now, or wait for the M8?

That just depends on your size preference. Obviously the m8 has a lot better hardware but personally I prefer the larger screen. This phone is also plenty fast, has a bigger battery, and a fingerprint scanner.

This. The M8 would be a great device but the screen size just isn't adequate. Not worth the screen compromise for the better specs IMO.
I came from note 3 and will be sticking with one max

Two problems
1st coming off the Samsung galaxy I had gotten used to being able to search the web while I'm on the phone WITHOUT wifi. That can't be done with the HTC ONE MAX.
2nd The silver strip covering the speaker started coming off, and now it has bent. I have been trying to find a replacement one but was only able to find it for the HTC ONE.

Well, I could talk all day about this, but I won't. I'll just say I've had a LOT of phones, everything from PocketPC's from way way back to iPhones to the Galaxy Note 3 and the HTC One Max is my most favorite so far. Great great phone. Big big phone but it actually feels better in the pocket than the squarish Galaxy Note 3. I'm very happy with my One Max. You'll love it!
coming from note 3
this one max is great
the only thing i hate the only 16 gb storage
sound is great
built is great
display is great but not like note 3 .note 3 is more powerful
speed is great
need more roms for my international one max
i love this monster
Go with Note 3, its better. But I am keeping my One Max just because of the speakers and because it is drop dead gorgeous (got the red one).

I own One Max.. With bigger screen 5.9" just good enough when it comes to Waze or any gps tracking apps.. very handy and good specs.. not too big, not too small.. just nice..
Coming from the Note 3. Its a gorgeous device. Am keeping it cause the unmatched audio quality. By the way here in KE everyone owns a Galaxy device. With the One Max, you set your own niche

The Specs of the One Max are not as fast as the Note 3 or the new HTC One (M8).
With that said, the HTC One Max has a bigger battery and screen.
While I was disappointed that the specs were not as good as the above mentioned phone, from experience I can say that the phone is fast enough, without needing to overclock to do everything you need it to do. The only area you would even consider overclocking is to improve performance when playing high demanding 3D games. Even then, what good is more power if the battery dies faster?
Combine this with HTC's powerflip case for an extra 2,000mAH worth of battery capacity and you have one of the most well balanced phones you can get right now.
Everyone always say "I don't know if I want a phone with a screen that large" but once you try it and downgrade to a smaller screen again you do feel the disappointment which means you enjoy having a bigger screen.
Anyone could be happy with this for 1-2 years.
But if you want the best specs, the Note 3 is better, and the HTC One M8 is better in terms of specs also but not as large a screen. I'd highly suggest playing around with the phones in the store before making a decision, because personally I hated Samsung's version of Android (Note 3).

Thinking of buying

Hi guys I'm thinking of buying a Song Ultra Z and just wanted to get you guy's input if there are some downfalls that I don't know of/commonly known.
Im upgrading from a galaxy note one which has been a nightmare: calls breaking up, power button, overheating.
Also if you have any recomended accessories.
Much Thanks!
I came from a Note1 myself and have only one advice for you: Buy it blindly [emoji16]

I too, came from the Note and i'm still happy with it (bought mine last september). It's pretty big (but very thin) and the camera isn't the greatest, and that's about it really.
I came from a note also. Its really nice phone. Although battery is not that good compared to note2. Also it has no camera flash but im still okay with it

#Note3 all the way. Love mine. Not a big fan of the Sony phones.. That one in particular.. Read some poor reviews, guess it's a lot of opinions. Good luck

I've never been as happy with a device as I am with the ultra. And I had a lot of them. You need to like the size though.

Its great. I personally like the google edition software better but once I got used to the size it is awesome.

Buy the Sony phone and run the ported GPe ROM on it !
Think of buying this phone as it is relatively cheap compared to other phones im my region.
Should I get this or the G2, the prices are the same...
I like this thing primarily for its size and display.
I just want one thing to know, can I flash cm11 android 4.4 here? I dont care about warranty. My current phone, lg optimus 4x never fell from my hand ever, so I am careful with my devices.
I would be going for a 5.5 inch phone but this thing is the cheapest larger than 5 inch phone.

Yes, CM11, and others are available, so that's not an issue. You've probably seen the preview of Android "L" today, so just imagine that on 6.44 inches. It'll be sweet.
The G2 isn't a bad device though, but you can't compare those two since they are two different types of devices (phone vs phablet), but I can easily recommend the Ultra.
I've had every high end phone and this by far is the best if you can deal with no flash and mediocre camera performance. I never need a tablet this thing is actually my main computer. I torrent the hell out of it fixed the ext sd card write permission and download like crazy on unlimited data.

You can also try save your device, but this needs root. Try LagFix (fstrim) from the Play Store ^^.
