Screen unresponsive during calls - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Often when I'm on a call and the screen turns off and I try to wake the screen up with the power or home key to hang up the phone is unresponsive. I sometimes have to pull the battery to get it to come back on. Most of the time once the person I am talking hangs up the screens wakes up.
I've tried to set it so the screen stays on during calls but that doesn't work. The screen still shuts off.
I've had this problem with 3 different roms.
I've tried every setting available and still have problems.
Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks in advance.

It's supposed to happen. You press power again to wake the phone up to show the display

I hit the power button and it still doesnt come on.

Not sure this is the problem, but if you go to "Settings > My device > Call > Turn off screen during calls" you could try UN-checking the box so that the screen stays on during a call (although your face might bump into the screen and push buttons at times). If that works in terms of being able to see everything and get back to your home screen after a call, something else is going on (maybe another app doing something it shouldn't be).

Turn off display while in call?

Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off the display while in a call? On my HTC Touch Pro I was able to just press the power button to achieve this - but on the Hero the power button is also the hang up button.
Any ideas?
Actually it's supposed to turn off automatically.
IMO the problem isn't turning the screen off during a call, it's turning it back on when needed.

I agree completely... Is an annoying issue that display go away on call because if you need something, ie keyboard or see call duration you need to do something for have it back.
Why not try this app, which you shake to wake the screen - not tired it myself but worth a go
Shake Awake
If the screen goes blank during a call you can simply press the menu button to wake up the screen again. Just tested that and it works fine.
Still, it would be nice to be able to turn it off when I want and not have to wait for it to time out to switch the display off.
You can also press the answer button to wake screen while in a call.
As to shake-it-to-wake-it, with the non-stick coating on the device I would probably be likely to launch it out of my hand !!! haha
Sprint Hero
I just picked up a Spring HTC Hero this weekend and am finding the same problem. When I place the phone up to my ear the screen does not shut off. However since the end button is also the same button used to turn off the screen, I'm in a catch 22.
For now I have to wait for the screen to time out. Turning the screen back on is not an issue as many have mentioned.

accidentally push buttons while on call

My mom has a problem where her cheek pushes buttons while shes on a phone call. Is there a lock app she can install? does the droid2 have a prox sensor?
The d2 has a sensor. Screen should black out to prevent this during calls. Has there been any apps or themes installed on the phone that may affect how the screen functions. A program that keeps your screen on under certain conditions may be keeping it on now. Just a guess, don't know anything about your phone or what's on it.
Widgetlocker is a great customizable lock screen replacement app. There is an option in settings to show during call. If then she needed the dialer during a call, would just have to swipe to unlock. There may be a better answer, holding the phone very still for example, but I really like this app.

I have that problem every now and then. When I get into a call I just press the lock button on top of the phone so the screen goes black, press the lock button again to light the screen back up, and then press the back arrow. That will leave you with the lock screen and no buttons to press unless you slide to unlock.
I would go to menu>settings>accesibiltiy and uncheck power button end call first or you'll hang up though.

I never had to do that? Lol. Could this be already set up in some ROMs?

Power button (short press) goes to lock screen instead of turning screen off

Anyone else have this issue? When I short press the power button to turn off the screen, it sometimes looks like it's going to turn the screen off then turns back on to the lock screen.
This has caused me all kinds of pocket dialing / pocket shortcut making / pocket emailling issues.
I THINK this issue might be caused by the Screebl app (app that keeps screen on when being held) since I can't replicate it with it off. I really would like to use it though because it's a really useful app. Any suggestions?
I can't half press my power button. It just turns off when I apply little pressure
Must be an isolated issue

It's not a half press. It's a short press (vs long press - which would bring up the power menu to shut down, restart, etc). It turns the screen off, then it blinks back on to the lock screen, but seemingly only when Screebl is enabled. Might just have to drop that app, but I'd rather not because it's damn useful.

Your last paragraph seems as if you've already isolated the problem. Unfortunately, I think you know your only choice. I'd consider contacting the creator of the app.

If i do a very quick short press with netflix open it brings me to the lock screen. no big deal
Hey, I just wanted to confirm that this is not just isolated to your phone. I have had this issue with two phones so far, a Samsung Vibrant and an HTC One S. I've been looking for an answer as well, but so far turning off Screebl has been the only solution. Sucks because I love Screebl.

Weird screen bug/defect?

Hello everyone I'm experiencing a very strange issue. Whenever I press towards the top center of the screen sometimes my screen goes black as if I hit the power key and then when I press the home button it doesn't turn back on usually I have to press the power button once then one more time to get the screen to get back on. You have to squeeze or press down the screen firmly a little hard I'll be asleep its not normal to do that but regardless doing that makes my phone turn off and then not turn back on until I press the power key twice. The screen appears to be off and all black but the soft keys vibrate as if thescreen was on and use. Does anyone else have this type of problem when pressing down on the screen? Or has anyone else experienced this some other way and has some type of solution or should I exchange?

I don't have that issue I, only have like many users that little lag when waking the screen. The problem your describing sounds very abnormal. I would def. Check out an exchange option if you have it bro.

Help needed asap

Guys i was in my settings a few minutes ago and i came across a feature which enabled me to open up my notifications by just tapping the screen so i enabled it and went to the homescreen to test it! Upon tapping the screen the phone started maing a beeping noise and a blue line started scrolling continously downward on the screen! I cant turn the phone off ! I only seem to be able to reboot it which doesnt help! I needto power the phone off i assume and then maybe do a hard reset??? Advice needed please
anyone?
What setting did you access I don't believe anybody will be able to help if we don't know where you went and what you changed. The things you mention are very vague and don't really paint a picture of what is happening.
Also if you want to turn the phone off without using the on screen settings just hold onto the power button for about 10 seconds it should turn off, after that hold power, home button, and volume up to go into recovery to reset or what ever it is you please.
Also is it showing you an X and Y axis? If so then you just go into settings, developer settings, show screen updates and turn that off the grid should go away. I am not sure what your issue is but that seems like the most likely option.
