INFO:
Odin is the ROM Flashing Tool for SAMSUNG smartphones. ROM files flashable with Odin come with .tar extension.
Most of the ROMs you are going to flash with Odin are the official stock Samsung ROMs (or leaked stock ROMs). Custom ROMs are rerely flashable by Odin because they come with .zip extension that Odin does not recognize (it recognizes .tar files).
Custom kernels, however, are sometimes provided in .tar format by their developers (e.g. CF-Root kernels), so that they can be flashed by Odin. When your phone is new and running official firmware you most often cannot flash a custom ROM to it because a Samsung phone often requires a custom recovery and root rights that are included in a custom kernel to be able to flash custom ROMs. That's why Odin often comes in handy in rooting and flashing a custom firmware to your phone because you (often) can flash a custom kernel with it that already includes root and custom recovery and enables you to flash custom firmware (custom ROMs). I use the word "often" very frequently in the previous sentence because every Samsung smartphone is different and requires various procedures for rooting it and flashing custom ROMs (see the section about using Odin below).
If it comes to stock ROMs, the best source of stock (official) Samsung ROM files is located at this excellent website: SamMobile.com/firmwares (link). It requires registration (it's free) and I encourage you to set up an account there because you will most likely use this site several times during your stay at XDA. You will most likely come across 1 .tar or 3 .tar file ROMs there, flashable by Odin. Refer to the Odin flashing guide below for more info.
Below in this thread you can download Odin v3.09, v3.07, v3.06, v3.04, v1.85, v1.83 and all important versions of Odin Multi Downloader.
However, bear in mind that not every Samsung smartphone can be flashed using any Odin version. In fact, for every Samsung smartphone there's a specific Odin version compatible with it. Please refer to the tables below to learn which Odin version is compatible with your phone!
To use Odin with ANY Samsung phone you first need to properly install latest Samsung USB Drivers for Mobile Phones. You can download the drivers in this thread (link). They work for all Samsung smartphones. In that thread there is a full guide on installing the drivers on Win 8/7/Vista/XP x86 & x64.

[Q] Downloaded KG5, Odin can't see .tar file?

Hi, I've decided to update the fw and have never used Odin before, I am following Intratech's instrutions and have pressed the pda button to find the .tar file but in file I downloaded (from Samfirmware ) doesn't seem to have .tar file?
What should the pda file be labeled as?

Looks like you have un-zipped the tar.

So am I not meant to unzip the winrar archive and just select it for pda, phone and CSC?
Just to point out that there are no .tar archives
Check the file extension on the zip, should be a .tar
Best to remove winrar and install 7-zip, it shows proper filename extensions.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and i dont know if i have the latest firmware-I got this phone on Christmas 2012, but does that make a difference? The files are just not appearing with Odin. I am having the same problem of my file clearly being located and visible in the location I want when viewing via Windows Explorer. Yet when I go into ODIN, the file doesn't show as an option. In the attached screenshot, ODIN shows me that there isn't ONE single file from this location that is usable via the PDA option?? Please help as this is really perplexing me.

I have the latin versionof Zoom running C101UBUAMF9. I am trying to created a modified stock ROM. I created the tar file using linux and even tried the TAR.md5 tool that was mentioned in the post. The flash fails at the system.img. I've made odin files for other phones successfully this way. Did you have to do anything different to make odin file work?
i flashed only the PDA and nothing was erased, everything is normal(so far).
what about CWM, there is no backup option there.
how can i update it?
Does anyone know if there's inactive hardware or something? I have the french zoom, some territories have lte but mine doesn't? I don't know if the hardware has just been deactivated or if it just doesn't have it
i dont understand what you mean hidden hardware.
Can we get OTA update by using this ROM?
can i just flash PDA just to gain root? will it be any side effects?
thanks for the method :fingers-crossed:

Can I flash without pc?
Isn't there way to flash recovery without pc cuz.. I forgot to restore boot image in twrp and now my phone is now in downloading mode .

How to make sure I have the latest modem and bootloader installed?

I am currently running:
Build: ALEXNDR.N960FXXU6FTJ5
Baseband version: N960FXXU6FTJ1
>MAKE SURE YOU HAVE LATEST MODEM AND BOOTLOADER INSTALLED!
Getting ready to flash a new rom, but I haven't done this for a while.
1) How do I check what modem version I have?
Based on the I *think* the modem is "FTJ1", but I'm not 100% sure.
2) How do I find out if there is a newer modem available?
3) What Bootloader version do I have? Is it "6" (the 5th character from the right in the Baseband version)?
Download the latest firmware from samfw.com. Since that website source builds official Samsung servers, the latest firmware there should be always the latest.

Yes, no problems. I have done this a few times before.
@Cyndaquissshhh what's the trick to downloading the firmware? I click it and it won't download...
Oh, there are three buttons (on some pages there will be four). You can either download it from Google Drive or "Download SamFW server". I don't recommend "download on browser" since the downloaded file would get stored as site data. As you can imagine that's not a good thing...
I find their site to be very confusing. Thank you for your help, @Cyndaquissshhh . I finally ended up download a file named "Samfw.com_SM-N960F_INS_N960FXXU9FUK1_fac.zip".
Can you (or anyone) verify that I have the correct file?
(Last time I tried something like this I soft-bricked my phone... thanks.)

If there's 4 tars in it, choose what it says. Like if it says AP, then choose the AP in Odin (you'll have to use ODIN ofc)
I don't know how it goes for newer devices but I had to always choose only a single file and then flash..
@notnoelchannel the .zip file has 5 files that all match up as you said (AP, BL, CP, and CSC) but the 5th file starts off with "HOME_". Does that go in the "USERDATA" box in Odin?

Don't use the HOME_CSC (i guess)
You need only 4 files, try flashing the 4 files but don't put the "HOME_" one
But as I said I don't own a Note 9, so I recommend to ask someone else :/
But if you choose all the files, it will flash the whole stock rom back!!!so don't!!! only BL and CP as Painkiller-axel said
Thank you. I have other questions regarding the flashing process but I think I will start another thread so this one doesn't get too confusing for people to read.
