[Q] Flashing Sammy modems without RIL - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so, here's the deal:
I use Temasek's CM 10.2. I'm currently at the efs v2 thingy, which means I previously flashed an MG4 Sammy ROM. Everything is working, except the battery drain the modem has, so I want to flash a different modem.
As I've been told, I can flash any of the modems past that so-called efs change, for example, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45144043, but I've also been told to "remove the RIL" cause CM uses open-RIL and if i'll flash this one, it will stop working. How do I "remove the RIL" from the flashable .zip file? Which files to I have to modify?

Get an old modem without ril flashable zip and replace the modedm.bin inside that old zip with the new one you want to flash.
Or use my Aroma zip in the imei /efs - know this stuff thread for MG2 or MG4. If there is a newer baseband that needs adding to that zip, let me know so I can add it.

Yea, i saw your flashable MG2/MG4, they are both pretty bad for me. I don't know which are newer basebands to be added, but I think (looking at Omega Files app and the Omega ROM thread) that there exists a UBEMH1 out in the end of August

Yes that would be newer. If you know where I can get the individual file from, please send me the link and I'll update my package.

Question about EFS

Hey people of XDA
i've had loads of android phones in the past so i know my way around flashing custom ROMS but this is my first samsung device and this whole EFS thing has me a little pickled. i've read the efs info thread in general and just want to get some things straight before i try installing a custom rom/recovery etc.
Ok i've installed the samsung toolkit from the development section for rooting my SIII so I can grab the EFS folder and make a copy of it and place it on both my SD card and the computer, probably put another copy on the cloud just in case. after that i'll install a CWM/TWRP from the same toolkit and go to flash either PA or Cyanogenmod now this whole baseband thing to allow the EFS file to be picked up how do i know that the ROM i'm flashing won't cause any problems? last thing i want it is to bugger it up. those will be the main ROMS i use unless i decide to give those S4 ROMS's a try
oh the phone is a UK model and is on 4.1.2
Thanks for any help, very appreciated
So far its only the roms based on samsung mg4 or mg5 releases that change efs format. Expect all newer releases to do so also

So how would I know if said ROM has that? i'm assuming ROMS such as PA and cyanogen wouldn't be included which means i can flash those how many times i want without it touching that folder? what about this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311671
(EDIT) I guess not just saw a thread saying someone flashed PA and lost that folder. so no matter what ROM i flash through TWRP/CWM i need to manually restore that folder myself by placing it in the root directory?
last thing I want to do is bugger the phone up so i want to get as much definite answers first. since my phone already has 4.1.2 on it then only ROMs with a MG4/2 baseband would work right? so don't know how to tell that either.

From MG4 ROM to Cyanogen 10.1

Hi guys,
I have a question. I have an S3 with the MG4 ROM and I want to upgrade it to Cyanogen Mod 10.1 (Android 4.2.2)
How can I do that safely? Because, from what I've seen, if I leave this ROM, I won't be able to use my phone for calls, texts, since the EFS partition has changed.
Thanks in advance

Its not if you leave the rom. Its if you change the baseband to an older one. Flashing CM will fine as it does not change the baseband Just be aware that stock roms with older basebands will need you to reflash the MG4 or newer basedband.
I wrote a whole thread about this in General > Sticky roll up

So.. basically I can't flash an older ROM, as it changes the baseband. That's just it?

No. You CAN flash an older ROM, but if it comes with an older baseband, you must then flash a newer baseband. Its all covered.

I assume you downloaded the kernel source but not the whole source required to build a rom. Have a look at source.android.com, which contains the most basic steps required to build Android. Ask here for help again after your first build failed

Following the guide at android.com, I have successfully built a system.img. But I am facing the following issue:
1) When I try to flash system.img on my device (galaxy trend S7392) ODIN reports Fail. I am not able to get any further regarding how to flash it or why the flash is failing.
2) I am googling it since long, but all the guides I can find direct to CM sources or Nexus family of devices, which provide a convenient way of extracting proprietary binaries from the phone. But I can't find a single tutorial/guide/information over how to identify the same and then integrate these binaries into the AOSP source code.
For now, the #1 is more concerning to me. Can you please help?

Yes, I have the system folder. You mentioned CWM flashzip. I am currently using STOCK recovery. Will that flashable zip work? If not, I need to have CWM recovery installed on my phone. And as far as I know, CWM is not available for GTS7392 as of now.
Do you have any other solution?

The second command will back up your system, you may flash it this method failed.
And also make sure that your system.img has no problem (I can't help if this occurred, no experience of compiling sources =P)
anyway, when using dd, ensure you have a backup of the target 'of', and make sure you can flash it back even it fails, and my way may not be the most appropriate way, try out others suggestion too =D

I have the .tar.md5 of stock ROM, so backup is not a issue.
The link you have suggested is merely for making update.zip for Android Applications, not the Android System . I am looking to flash system.img
Regarding system.img has no problem, I currently don't have a way to find out if the package is error free. I am searching for the same.

Oops, sorry for that, haha, I used cwm all the time for my phone, so I haven't tried making an update.zip =D
If I was you, I would have tried to dd in, by the way, why would you compile it from source? I prefer editing a stock rom (I'm working on it now -w-)

Working for which phone?
Although editing a stock rom seems to be easier than that of what I am trying to do, I am quite interested in the learning and gaining experience involved in the Compilation and Porting Android to a particular device. That's why I am trying to compile it from source.
Can you link me somewhere to learn editing stock rom too?

The only quick and less frustrating way would be to downgrade to GB first and then upgrade to JB. After upgrade to JB, you can take the backup of your modem fs from phone itself to avoid such issues in future...

[ROM] 100% Stock 4.2.2 GT-P5210(WiFi) [Deodexed/Rooted build also available]

This is a completely 100% stock rom built from the P5210XXUAMK8 base. It's in flashable zip format, but there is absolutely no tweaking done to this rom; its primary purpose is as a base for anyone wanting to build a mod rom for the P5210 WiFi, as well as being there for anyone who wants to return stock without odin.
As it is 100% stock it's fully bloated, odexed, and non-rooted. You can attain root by flashing root.zip (not included in this post, but it's in the main forum) thus, if you have any complaints, bring them to Samsung, not me. Flashing instructions and download link below.
Edit: I've now also posted a deodexed + rooted build. See download link below. No other changes have been made to this version besides deodex/root.
Flashing instructions:
-Full wipe (factory reset in twrp)
-flash ROM
-reboot, let sit for about 10 minutes
-You're now 100% stock. Enjoy!

These two zips should be helpful for my P5210. There was a zip before, I think from DutchDanny, but it didn't work. I'm going to keep them on my SD card. To anticipate others needs, do you have a thought to repeat the process for the P5200 and P5220? I'm sure those guys would appreciate this also and I'm thinking you have already done more than half the work.

Restl3ss, I see that the version of firmware you used, P5210XXUAMK8, is a European version. I am just curious to know if there was a specific reason why that version was used? Would it possibly be due to difference WiFi frequencies available? I think there is some cross compatibilities in frequencies between the US and EUR.
I am sure you are busy, but would there be a future possibility to do the same to the US (Cellular South - XAR) version, P5210UEUAMK1?
Thanks for all you do.

I will not be making another version from the US version as there is no reason for it, the above firmware will work just fine on your device, including all available WiFi frequencies. What frequencies the device supports is defined by hardware, and there's no hardware difference between the US/EUR version. WiFi is a global standard, I assure you

If you don't have a ext Sd card don't try my suggestion! I would only ever advise a full wipe if you have a ext sd card just in case anything goes wrong plus like you said where would you put the rom. I would strongly suggest you getting a ext card no matter how small if you are flashing roms.

If you don't have a ext Sd card don't try my suggestion! I would only ever advise a full wipe if you have a ext sd card just in case anything goes wrong plus like you said where would you put the rom. I would strongly suggest you getting a ext card no matter how small if you are flashing roms.

Very strangeGlad to see you got a a ext sd card this will save you a lot of trouble in the future..
The steps I would take now would be after you have installed your 4.4 rom boot it up then reboot into recovery and flash a separate modem you could use one >> https://mega.co.nz/#!PQZDiRYY!V3pk5H24zuhI4xmE-RvF5gRKJ9N4ECg9YqEg09neX84 << and see if that works.
Also did you backup your efs when you where on stock 4.3 if not flash stock then backup your efs then try the steps above....

No, I didn't make a backup of efs
I also want to mention one thing
Currently, I have 4.1.2 installed on my s3
Since my network was not working so I flashed the stock rom
Should I make a backup of efs on 4.1.2 or should I upgrade to 4.3 and then make a backup of EFS?

Now you have confused me even more! I thought you said in your previous post that you had connection on 4.3 stock rom if so why are you on 4.1.2 ?. Stock rom 4.3 is efs v2 and stock rom 4.1.2 is efs v1 if you have no connection on 4.3 then this is your problem you still have efs v1 which will not work on 4.3 or any of the newer roms please confirm that you have a signal on 4.3 stock rom.

And yes I flashed the modem you gave me but it also didn't work

Ok that's good it means you are on v2 efs which is good..I just needed to confirm that you had v2 efs I thought you might have been on 4.1.2 because of no signal.
I must admit this is a strange one because the asop roms, omni roms etc don't change your baseband which can effect your signal. There is one more option you could try use this patched modem >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ck-firmware-i9300xxemg4-t2377731/post43946365 << by JustArchi look at post 15. Flash your rom then boot into it then reboot into recovery and then flash JustArchi modem see if that works.(Even though I don't think that is the problem)
Also your efs make sure you back it up preferably when you are on 4.3 stock rom.

Off topic question
Will this modem get my network back if I flash 4.0.4 on my s3?

It is strange not something I have come across before:crying: maybe somebody with a bit more knowledge might see your thread and help:good:As for the 4.0.4 rom you mentioned your efs which is v2 works on 4.3 and 4.1 not sure about 4.0.4 but I would strongly suggest keeping away from ics roms they have the sleep of death issue which is very bad news and you definitely don't want that...

Just want to add something
I used to install custom roms often. All of them worked perfectly fine
When I saw my flash counter it was 20+
So, I decided to use triangle away
Since then I am unable to flash any custom rom with working network successfully
